The way Alonso slows down in front of Hamilton in lap 63, just before the first DRS zone in order to force Hamilton to slow down aswell and to prevent the full use of his DRS was just brilliant !! So smart move from Alonso
in f1 games I have a super strat if there's a DRS detection zone I'd brake and let car behind pass me,allowing me to get DRS,then try to stay as close as I can,and overtake the car and run away I call it the "DRS slingshot"
@@vandecayear10 depends. If the other car is quicker, its the best way to let them pass you as you will have DRS and can try overtake once more. However, if all things are equal, its better to stay in front.
Alonso had done this for almost a whole race with Schumacher trailing him in his ferrari, and he did that with a car with a broken engine. This is Alonso just getting warmed up.

@@monetum1392 Nah, difference here was simply that Lewis had way more to lose - already being ahead of Verstappen on the road. Both Verstappen and Hamilton are hyper-aggressive when it comes down to title-relevant battles, but they're talented enough to make it work 99% of the time. Lewis's mistake in Silverstone was just an uncharacteristic misjudgement, not him or Max being any more or less aggressive than they always are.
Alonso had more to gain for team/mate but not much to lose by running his car wide. Lewis had a lot more to lose (championship lead) if they collided, thus why he would always backed out. The battle at Hungary is overblown really. lol especially considering it's a train track that's already almost impossible to overtake. Ask Vettel and all the other drivers that day who were stuck.
This is one of those "we were there" moments. This is also one of those clips that people will never stop sharing, one of those clips that plays at the start of each practice, quali and race at the Hungarian.
Every driver should learn from that battle, Alonso did a defensive masterclass against a much faster Merc. He just showed everyone that you can defend even if your opponent is much faster on the right track and if done well

As a RedBull fan my day was ruined until I saw this ultimate battle. I was on the edge of my seat! What a day what a battle that was. Alonso was showing everyone why he is 2 times WDC.
This was the most fun I'd ever had watching f1, Lewis and Alonso going all out, Alonso with a slower car holding him up that long was crazy. If Lewis had gotten by 2 laps earlier, he'd easily won the race.

It was the immense amount of pressure from Hamilton that made Alonso lock up.. I don't understand why people try and act like Alonso just randomly locked up.. I absolutely loved every single second of this battle. Both drivers got me into F1 in 2007 and seeing them in 2021 racing like their lives depended on it, I can't even explain the feeling haha
I remember a race in Singapore where Alonso holded Vettel for most of the race. Fernando won by less than 3 tenths. Indeed he is one of the best defenders I’ve ever seen, he’s still got it!
Actually he did that the entire race. After the race he said that he allowed Vettel to be close to him on purpose, then Vettel couldn't cool the brakes and couldn't attack him. That race was Singapore 2010.
@@elfoares This race was much more reminiscent of Alonso in the 2005 San Marino GP where he held off a much faster Michael Schumacher for 11 laps to win. And to think Alonso was not only slower than Schumi then but also on engine conservation mode because that was his second race for that engine.

Alonso and Renault also said they were in conservation engine mode not because it was the second race for that engine, they found out before the race that one cylinder was not working and it was damaged but they didn't know how much. Then, they decided to take the risk and racing with this engine but with less power and not changing it and take the 10 grid positions penalty. In the RUclips F1 channel there is a video about this battle with Alonso reactions and he remembers the story again. Cheers!!

Came here looking for this comment. I noticed this during the race, Alonso knew Hamilton would have a better run to turn 2, so by hesitating he caused Hamilton to lose momentum and therefore no challenge into turn 2.

Alonso had more to gain for team/mate but not much to lose by running his car wide. Lewis had a lot more to lose (championship lead) if they collided, thus why he would always backed out. The battle at Hungary is overblown really. lol especially considering it's a train track that's already almost impossible to overtake. Ask Vettel and all the other drivers that day who were stuck.

It was the immense amount of pressure from Hamilton that made Alonso lock up.. I don't understand why people try and act like Alonso just randomly locked up.. You try defending the greatest F1 driver of all time for 10 laps in a weaker car.. It was inevitable he would get him but that was class from Alonso to hold him off for that long.

I absolutely loved every single second of this battle. Both drivers got me into F1 in 2007 and seeing them in 2021 racing like their lives depended on it, I can't even explain the feeling haha
I remember a race in Singapore where Alonso holded Vettel for most of the race. Fernando won by less than 3 tenths.

Actually he did that the entire race. After the race he said that he allowed Vettel to be close to him on purpose, then Vettel couldn't cool the brakes and couldn't attack him. That race was Singapore 2010.

@@elfoares This race was much more reminiscent of Alonso in the 2005 San Marino GP where he held off a much faster Michael Schumacher for 11 laps to win. And to think Alonso was not only slower than Schumi then but also on engine conservation mode because that was his second race for that engine.

Alonso and Renault also said they were in conservation engine mode not because it was the second race for that engine, they found out before the race that one cylinder was not working and it was damaged but they didn't know how much. Then, they decided to take the risk and racing with this engine but with less power and not changing it and take the 10 grid positions penalty. In the RUclips F1 channel there is a video about this battle with Alonso reactions and he remembers the story again. Cheers!!

Came here looking for this comment. I noticed this during the race, Alonso knew Hamilton would have a better run to turn 2, so by hesitating he caused Hamilton to lose momentum and therefore no challenge into turn 2.

That Alpine defending against the supersonic Mercedes with DRS, with vortices flying off the wings, rubbing wheels, locking up…it looked heroic.
It was some of the greatest wheel to wheel racing with have seen in the last 20 years.
