I would have also liked the Hound's story arc to include a crisis of faith where he can't deny the existence of the Lord of Light and when fighting the Mountain, he uses the blood ritual to light his sword on fire to defeat his brother using his greatest fear spawned by his biggest doubt.
18:16 WORST POST NUT CLARITY EVER.😑 25:31 the creators said, this episode was inspired by the Dresden(Germany, my home town) bombing 1945, wich is mourned every year. Before this episode i thought: "Oh no, only two episodes left". After the episode: "Oh good, only one episode left". 😁 But i like the ending. Denerys' decent into madness was hinted at in a lot of moments since season one. There is a behind the scenes special about the 8th season, that is really good.
Jon didn’t go back to the nights watch. He actually went to the real north to live out his life with the free folk. At least that’s how interpreted the final scene.
Jaime saying "I've never really cared much for them, innocent or otherwise" after becoming the kingslayer to save the population and Bran's "Why do you think I came all this way" after saying "I can never be lord of anything" perfectly sum up the quality of writing in this season
That quote you took from Jaimie is honestly one of if not my biggest issues with the ending of this show. It basically rendered his entire character arc pointless
Also Dany: "Tell me if I'm doing anything bad for the people so I don't turn out like my father." Varys:(Does literally that) Dany:I AM THE MOTHER OF DRAGONS!
@@phousefilms its the most human thing to say something and Do something completely different. She always wanted to burn city. So it made sense and wasnt rushed. Really, it was even delayed because of White walker storyline.

You'd expect: A lot of named characters to die in the Long Night, especially when there are unarmed women and children down in the crypts of Winterfell when the undead Starks rise. One of the biggest tragedies of the HBO series was Jamie’s story arc. Gone from evil villain, to remorseful antihero, to …. Whatever the hell he was in the last couple episodes. I was so confused and angry, you’re not alone.

One detail that was pointed out to me that I can never unlearn: People in olden times shouting FIRE when shooting arrows, BEFORE guns were invented. They don't say FIRE they say LOOSE
They use to say Loose as well in the show...until the writers completely gave up on everything...including properly portraying the era the show was based on. Instead it became typical Hollywood basic action writing and basic cliche or illogical battles
@@slenderfoxx3797 The only other time the word fire was used instead of loose that I can remember was in season 4 - Dany catapulted freed slaves collars over the walls of Meereen, and she gave the command in Valyrian, but the translation says "fire!". I've been saying this for years...one of the other times that really bothered me was the second Lord of the Rings movie in the Helm's Deep battle. I don't know what they're thinking besides that 'fire' sounds more dramatic, even though it's completely wrong.
They could have gone on for 2 or 3 more full seasons to tell more stories, instead of just deleting the whole franchise into shit!!! However, the art and sound department fuckin' KILLED the last few seasons!
hmm i don't know.... the attack on king's landing was surprisingly disappointing visually.. some of it looked like a video game (as in real time rendered)... i was shocked by how bad the cgi looked compared to s7
Ya, it’s more of a let down knowing HBO offered and GRRM both wanted 2-3 more seasons. The show runners are the ones that turned it down and rushed the ending in order to move on to their cancelled Netflix show……..
@@elvewizzy they didn't get fired, they walked away from it because they already had the Netflix deal and star wars fandom is like 10x worse than GOT fandom when they don't like something that happens on the screen. There's a lot of times where I've gotten sick enjoyment out of people reacting to this mess of a season, specifically the last two episodes, but this just felt super crummy. Because I've watched Natalie's relationship with the show grow over the various seasons, and seen how much she loved certain characters, it just plain sucked to see how far things fell later on and to witness the sincere and deep disappointment she felt.
Actually, going back and starting from the beginning, Dany was on this path from nearly the start, and helped along by Drogo and Daario. She burned her enemies alive throughout the show, just like her father. She reveled in it. No mercy for those who surrendered either. Yes, she was down on that path, but the decision of "Im going to kill all these civilians that have nothing to do with it, even though I just won and Cersei is in the red keep waiting for me to kill her" is too sudden and it does not make sense with the character development she got so far in the show. That moment needed a lot more development D&D refused to give her, even though more time was offered. So many rushed and unfinished plotlines due to their incompetence and greed. @@NoelAKABigNolo i guess it was coming and we all saw it but i agree with you it was rushed. This show was a cultural phenomenon, set to be one of the greatest shows of the decade, and yet 2-3 weeks after the finale no one wanted to talk about it anymore.
It's wild, but "being deeply confused, frustrated, and disappointed by the show's final season" is now pretty much an official part of the GoT fan experience. Like, it's such a near-universal thing that it's every bit as standard as "the joy of seeing dragons for the first time" or "the horror of witnessing the Red Wedding."
@@DutronComics Personally I have a lot of problems with everything post Tywin, I mean there are still good bits/scenes etc but it's just not the same. You do realize that a lord is not a king right? The fact that Bran says he can't be a lord is actually foreshadowing since when he says that he can already see that he will become king
@@jacobwalsh1888 I do agree that they didn't lead up to it properly but Bran is who GR.R.M originally intended to put on the throne. I believe Bran realizes that the entire purpose of the three eyed raven was to be a failsafe for humanity if the night king wins so maybe he realizes that his responsibility in that regard has been fulfilled? also after crowning bran they abandon the idea of heirs and become a democracy. Also it's possible that they decide that whoever is the three eyed raven is king? but again the decision itself isnt bad, the way it was handled was
Also I’ve since learned that especially important members of the stark family were named Brandon. From what I know, most of which were kings. This is really only mentioned in grrm’s personal work, further solidifying that the idea itself is justified but the execution in the show was handled poorly.
"Why did we cut away? I like to watch people's reactions!" - Nat Gold, understanding the value of people who love watching people's reactions by making a channel about it :D
Except that for her it was only disappointment after a few weeks of watching, not the years of excitement and eagerly waiting for each episode the rest of us went through xD
Was going to say the very same thing. Misery loves company and a series ruined after years of building it all up to absolutely destroy it all in this final season 😔. Pains me to re-watch these last 2 seasons in these reactions too that’s how much PTSD I still have.
Imagine watching this show for 8 years, creating theories and studying maps and family trees, and being fully obsessed. Then season 8 comes along to take a dump in your mouth. I wouldn't say the entire season was bad, but the ending felt like we were thrown out with the dirty bath water. This was my absolute favorite show for years, and now I can't even muster the resolve to do a rewatch. Extremely disappointing.
S7 and S8 are one big awful season in two parts , with 5 grade dialogues , complete misunderstanding of characters and the material, plot and with amazing cinematography and cast and music. For me .
Same, tho i have rea-read the A song of Ice and Fire books like 3 times. Honestly, even if the books are never finished i'll prefer them over the horrible series finale every time. If Gorge never finishes the books i would still recommend them over the series to my friends.
John's character returning to square one at the end of the show (being sent back to the knights watch) is a really good metaphore for how regressive this writing was in the last season.
And why is there still a Knights Watch? They got rid of the Night King and his army. And the wildings aren't the enemy anymore. So what are the Knights Watch watching?
It's also shown through the writing of Daenerys. You could somehow argue that "she was meant to turn mad" (which I disagree) or "she shouldn't have been queen" or whatever. But the point of Daenerys' character was bringing back the Targaryen from the brink of extinction. Bringing magic and the dragons back to Westeros. She did all that. And then s7 and 8 proceeded to destroy it all. First by annihilating her dragons, then by just killing her lineage by murdering her. Childless, crownless and all her accomplishments reduced to "oh well she went mad over bells". To have a story where you end up being like "oh well she was better off getting r*ped on a daily basis by Khal Drogo at least they respected her there" is like... the epithome of bad writing. Every one of the characters' journeys (at they exception of Sansa I'd say, even tho she ends up completely alone when all she craved about during the whole show was reuniting with her family) is just pure nothingness... Arya becomes a voyager now?? Jon is back at the Wall because bleh? Bran who literally has superpowers is... King, yay? Tyrion is still a shithead with his bff Bronn bringing the worst of him (a rich, annoying, self-serving man who will go around all the wh*re houses in the kingdom). Oh yay Sam is a Maester, even tho that's not how it works in the universe GRRM created. Jaime and Cersei died in the most meaningless way, we still don't know if she really was pregnant since they never care using a fake belly as a prop, despite Cersei being at least 7 months pregnant when she died. Forreal I ended the show being happy for Ghost, Davos and Podrick. No one else. The show didn't "break the wheel", it restored the old system, going as far as arguing that a king who doesn't want to rule is the ideal answer. Even tho that's EXACTLY the kind of king Robert Baratheon was. But somehow the writing was like "ruh duh dwagon destwoyed the mean metal chair, look we bwoke the wheel!!!". Yet you still have rich noble a-holes, laughing at the idea of even giving people the right to choose their leaders (which is what Daenerys chose to do at Dragons Bay). Then they add that "oh no order of succession" which would mean, yay a war between every rich and powerful families in the kingdom every time a king dies. The independant kingdoms get put back in the "Six Kingdoms" because... oh well whatever. Despite Dorne still HATING most of Westerosi families, the Starks just as much as the Lannisters, probably. And the Iron Islands having started a war against the North to gain their independance. It's just... nop. Not even decades of human evolution will make this ending make any sense.
Jon didn’t go back to the wall. He has gone with the wildlings beyond the wall to start a new life where he really belongs and finally find peace after he fought as protector of the kingdom of men. He really earned it.
Never forget how the main mystery in the show of Jon's parentage ended up not mattering at all and a character who wasn't even in a season became King. Like WTF.
Yea the parentage will matter more in books as their is also a third targarian heir running around so if ever do get more books probably will still end up with the three killing each other over who the true targarian heir is
'My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined' is PRECISELY what I felt about the final season of Game of Thrones. Especially the finale. Lmfao
@Republic of Texas I actually loved the direction they took - Dany was ultimately always a power hungry entitled tyrant (she just had redeeming features) - I just don't think 7 episodes then 6 episodes in the final 2 seasons was enough to properly pull it off
@Republic of Texas I get what you're saying, but Dany was mad from the beginning, it was obvious upon 2nd viewing. It's a testament to Clarke's acting that the journey was as subtle and simmering as it was. Bran? Yeah, I was meh about that, but I guess it makes sense given his arc in this version of the story.
The thing that annoys me most is when Jamie says he doesn’t “care about them, innocent or otherwise” in the tent, as if saving innocents wasn’t the entire reason he killed the mad king. He literally gave up his honour to save the innocents of king’s landing but now all of a sudden doesn’t give a shit?
Character arcs? The Daves don't need no stinking character arcs! In fact, forget every story arc they ever wrote throughout the first seven seasons... NONE of that matters in season 8. - You say you want to know what that spiral pattern the night king kept making was all about? Nah, piss off... those were just inconsequential doodles. - Tyrion was smart? Nah... he's a dummy now. - Jaime was redeemed? Bah! He's a complete arse again... no character growth at all. - Jon is the rightful heir to the throne? Screw Jon, he's an outcast hobo. - Cersei deserved a drawn-out, torturous end? Nah, she got hit on the head with some bricks and died instantly. - Dani is a compassionate ruler! Hah! Just kidding, she was a mean tyrant all along! - So who's gonna sit on the Iron Throne?!? Meh... let's just give it to the least deserving character. Bran the Boring... the most forgettably bland character in the entire series.

Ironically, it was their horrible writing in these final seasons that prompted Disney to ditch the idea of hiring them.

Even if the creators wanted to take the show a certain way, they could have it so much better. You want Rhaegon dead, let the entire iron fleet open fire on the dragons and let Rhaegon sacrifice himself to save Drogon and Dany. Want Jaimie to die with Cersei. Let him initially be with Dany's side but when Dany turns Madqueen, he abandons them and runs to save Cersei and his child. Want Dany to go Madqueen. Kill almost all of her Dothraki and Unsullied in the Iron fleet attack making her feel truly alone in Westeros. You want Drogon to burn the throne. Have Drogon open fire at Jon, leading to him running and hiding behind the throne. You want Bran to be king. After the fall of Kings landing, make every house, banner be in open rebellion. Everyone's fighting everyone. Unsullied and Dothraki have no leader so they fall easy. Let Starks hold King's Landing but have armies approaching from all sides. Make Bran realise that the three-eyed Raven's plan of hiding from the world was a mistake and that power and knowledge makes the best ruler. So he wargs into Drogon and stops the war from even happening. Want the exact ending you wanted. Let Tyrion lead diplomatic efforts to unite the kingdoms again. Arya goes on her adventure. Sansa becomes Wardeness of the north (she doesn't have to be queen). Jon overcome by guilt that his actions led to the death of the two women he loved, leaves for the only place he felt truly happy, the cave beyond the Wall. On his way he finds the Wildings desperate for a leader. So he has a change of heart and leads them to build a society North of the Wall.
Makes sense with all except for the jon and Drogon thing. Dragons are meant to be more intelligent than people and the point was what really killed Dany was the throne. Her entire drive for it through the entire show. So it’s actually better he aims straight at the throne
@@LS13. Also, as to this point, he recognized who and what Jon was. That keeps getting passed over. The other thing I didn't have a problem with was Jaime. All his harsh words were bluster; he said he was hateful when he'd been proven to be anything but. Yeah, most of what happened at the end was crap, but it wasn't all crap.
To add to your list if they really wanted Arya to kill the Night King they should have had him approach Bran in the Gods Wood, raise up his ice blade, strike down to skewer Bran...only for Bran to acrobatically dive out of the way, pull out the dagger, and stab the Night King. Then as the Night King slowly starts to crack he looks up with actual shock on his previously only emotionless face to see Bran pull off his face, revealing that he was actually Arya and the NK had been led into a trap. Bonus points if Arya comments that the NK has stolen many names from the faceless god, revealing that she was genuinely still a faceless man. "The lone wolf dies, but the pack survives" is another one of the things D&D acccidentally "forgot", by separating ALL of the Starks at the end. The last season makes no sense in so many aspects, and I hope and pray that GRRM lives long enough to finish the books so we can get rid of the sour taste this show left behind...
He has said publicly that he has no interest or plans to finish it. I find that that to actually be worse and more of a betrayal then how people feel about the television show. I read the books long before the series. I wasn’t set up to be dissatisfied. I just enjoyed seeing it all come to life. Much of the last two seasons main plot, Dany destroying Kings Landing and going mad, made sense to me. It was how to books were trending. All the other problems I just chalked up to TV fudging things like this. I always thought I’ll have the books to fall back on. Well, that isn’t happening. So, GRRM can go sit a d!@k and spin. I would LOVE to see a behind the scenes documentary on how such a disastrous script was written. The show was HUGE NEWS during the break between seasons 7 and 8, and everyone on the planet was starving for some kind of leak since no one had any idea how the story would end. I'd bet money HBO instituted some kind of production policy where instead of collaborating with a large group of writers who can edit each other's work and bounce ideas off one another, they just locked D&D in a room to crank out a script that may have been lower quality but was a SECURE product. Iirc, there were even articles that came out during production about how some actors would have no idea what the script was, get on set in costume and then have their lines fed through them via earpiece - further evidence that they were trading the show's quality for security.
Rhaegal:(dies) Dany(charging at ship, suddenly banks away as she charges. Battle of KL(literally one fucking episode later) Dany:(suddenly remembers dragons are omnidirectional and she could have burned the ships a whole episode earlier).
The idea that you could shoot at a flying target with a ballista is just completely ridiculous. Those things were accurate to maybe 100m against slow-moving ground targets. To point it up into the sky and shoot at something hundreds of yards up, against gravity, and actually score a first-shot hit despite having zero practice shooting at this kind of target, is just beyond ridiculous. It's stupid.
@@michaelwong8083 the idea that a large fleet of warships could sneak attack and ambush a flying hyper-intelligent perceptive airborne dragon is even stupider
They ran out of time. What else could they do? It looks like they never expected the show to become so popular, and then they tried to make it really big and epic, and then they realized they had no real plan to wrap everything up cleanly in two episodes. It would have been really hard to believe if Cerci softened up and they all fought the final battle together and become friends singing in a circle. People would have hated that even more.
@@dialecticalmonist3405 You should watch the Critical Drinker's video where he describes how it might have been done better. It's really quite brilliant.
"...best season EVER!" -- Emilia Clarke, with a sarcastic laugh, when asked about the season. Any depth these characters had went almost completely away by the end of the show, and went into a lust for power, or doing what is 'honorable' at all costs. Bran's arc altered completely right at the very end, where he "came all this way" because he wanted to be king, when just a few episodes before, he stated, "I don't really 'want' anymore."
Also the implication that Bran, who can apparently see into the future, just accepted and welcomed the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians (I believe King's Landing housed well over a million inhabitants), so that he could rule. That doesn't even fit the "i dOn't fEeL aNyMoRe" sociopath he has become. Because, surely, his rule now affects fewer people, and those few cannot much like him in any case, after all he was part of the invading force that murdered their families and neighbors, and he rules over lords who got no independence, while his bossy sister got the north for no reason at all.
Thing that pissed me off the most was the idea that Bran...the guy that can see the past and the future along with being able to warg into all kinds of beast...that Bran would need to hire a Master of Whispers. Its like they weren't even paying attention to any form of logic at all.
GRRM: Writes characters that are morally grey or must bend their morals to accomplish their goals or lose the game of thrones(Ned Stark). Characters are well written and, love or hate them, they each have a reason to exist and they stay consistent with how they were in their first appearances. D&D: Funny drunk dwarf jokes or one liners for t shirts! Jon says "I don' wan' it!" Varys acts like an idiot! Littlefinger is killed because Bran can see through time(which could only be done through heart trees in the books)! Sam survives being pinned fifteen times by the wights and still survives!
PH5121 I also like how little finger got “a trial”, wherein ALL the damning evidence Safe for the murder of Sansa’s aunt was supplied by a weird boy in a wheelchair who claims to see through time and space. How the fuck would the rest of the people have believed any of that? That wasn’t a trial, that was just an execution
Season eight was not “bad”; it was an assault. It was a crime. People loved, loved, loved these characters (and loved to hate them) and the writers twisted them into different people. it still hurts…

I'm still so mad about how they treated Jaime's progression in the show. One of my favourite Jaime moments from the books is, when Cersei is in trouble with the High Sparrow, she sends Jaime a letter begging for his help; when Jaime gets the letter he barely spares it a glance before throwing it away. It's a great moment, showing how much he's grown and developed, gotten over Cersei and redeemed himself thanks to his time with Brienne. Having him go back to Cersei in the show just completely undercuts his entire story and belays a complete lack of understanding about his character
But this is what will happen in the books too. This is how GRRM wrote it. Jaime goes back to Cersei. D&D didn't make this up, GRRM told them this is what happens.
@@jjohnson4474 I would like to see the source about that specifically. I know about the Mad Queen bit but not the Jaime story line. And even if true, there are ways to make that character's fall from grace feel 'earned' and not rushed and unfulfilling.

@@fredrikpettersson2972 I would agree with that if Tyrion's whole "the power of a good story" speech wasn't so blatantly meta. D&D were invited to make the next Star Wars Trilogy, after Episode IX. That's the reason they rushed things. GRRM and HBO told them the show needed at least 12 seasons. But they didn't want to give it to other to finish the show... they wanted the glory. So they Rushed season 7 and 8. The irony is that because of the poor reception of both Episode IX and Season 8... Disney canceled their plans. D&D who thought they would be known for finishing the best TV of all times and make a Star Wars trilogy... are forever known as the people who were able to destroy a TV in the name of their pride and glory.
One of my main gripes in the later seasons is Tyrion, one of the smartest people in Westeros just became a sidekick follower who spouts dumb lines from time to time. Completely lost all his characterizations.
0:07 "This Doesn't even make sense" Which could be said for literally 99% of everything that happened in seasons 7 and 8 LMAO Edit: If theres one GOT review to watch Natalie. I think Lindsay Ellis two part video review is one of the best. It doesn't cover everything but they're still great!
This right here. Season 7 and 8 were absolute shit. Just terrible, terrible. I still can't believe the best show ever made went out so badly, and it didn't have to happen.
@@JasonHauser125 the best show ever made?? i mean, it is your perspective so is not wrong, but really? a heck of a show, one of the best sure, but the best, eh... ok

And unfortunately, for me it ruins them retroactively. I cant rewatch the show bc knowing what they become eventually, I cant enjoy these characters anymore. Thank you, producers....
I remember when season 5 came out, Jaime was still inexplicably with Cersei and mindlessly promoting Lannister interests and I kept thinking "This sucks. They can't ruin his character worse than this" Hoo boy was I wrong
@@dearkazuscorner2549 maybe we can just watch the first 4 seasons and pretend that’s it. Wish we could get the whole cast back together to do a rebooted final season with much better writing.
IMO 2 people got good endings really. Jon and Arya. Jon loved the Wildlings more than anyone pretty much outside his family. He never wanted to rule over anyone or be anyone important really. This way he can be with Tormund, honestly his best friend pretty much and roam the North. Arya was never going to be anyone's lady, anyone's property. She loves adventures and being her own woman. Both endings make a lot of sense and seem to make their characters happy. Hound's ending is pretty poetic. Would've been cool for him to survive, but if he was going to go out that was a bad ass way to do it Everyone else =/
Some of us veteran thrones fans have more anger for GRR Martin telling D&D and us he would be done with the book’s before they would run out of source material! 10 years later still no release date even for the next novel let alone the final book! And if it takes him another 10 years to finish the odds are we will never know how he wanted it to end!
@Republic of Texas Of course your right. But Martins book last ended with Jon Snow being killed by his brothers of the Nights Watch as we know the ending of season 5! So basically D&D did 3 seasons with a basic outline given to them by George And I believe he didn't even write a episode as he normally did! They did a great job following the books some things they got wrong but overall they did great! I mean how hard would it be to have to try to come up with what George is thinking let alone write to incredible complex story and really try to end it for him!
Did Arya not explain to Jon that she was an expert assassin who had killed all the important Frey men? Her trip with the Hound to King’s Landing to kill Cersei is one of the few things that did make sense. But she didn’t tell anyone what she was doing? They could have waited to attack until after she completed her mission. Most of the city would have easily surrendered.
Jamie should have been a casualty of the winterfell battle. Would have given his redemption arc a little more sense. After his death Arya could have used his face to infiltrate King’s landing and kill Cersei.
Imagine investing years in this programme, watching it from the start, reading it, running a university club based around Game of Thrones with countless themed nights out and episode viewings, watching reactions to episodes... and then season 8 happens and makes you just hate the whole thing. Some of my friends have GoT tattoos! Such a tragic, awful ending. The more I think about it, the madder it makes me.
Emilia Clarke has said that at the table reading for the finale, she and Kit Harrington were both in shock, just looking at each other like 'What is even happening right now', and afterwards she wandered around for hours, in a deep depression and crying at what had been done to the other self she'd been playing for so long. There's no excuse for what was done to these characters. Maybe you could get them to this place, if you took some time and showed us a REAL leadup to these massive shifts, but instead they just dumped it all at once, and tried to pretend that it was the inevitable outcome. This is the worst fail at landing a finale that I've ever seen, and it succeeds only in retroactively wrecking the previous seasons. I can't rewatch them, I couldn't even watch most of your reactions to this show, it's tainted so badly by the end.
I love the Pitch Meeting for this season. "We just don't have the time!" "You can have the time, we can just give you more episodes..." "Nah." "Ah, dang it."
As you said, everything that happened in the show could have happened but excecuted in a MUCH better and cohesive way that it makes sense. Daenerys could have ended her journey being one of the greatest villains ever in any TV show. But they executed it so badly. I feel horrible for Emilia, imagine playing a character for a decade for it to end up like this. She still did her best.
As someone who's been wanting Dany to "go mad" or at least become more morally grey since season 4ish, i could not be MORE disappointed with how poorly executed it was. I always felt this was the natural progression of her character especially with additional knowledge from the books, but they made it so rushed at the end that i almost wish they had just continued with the girlboss-ification limbo they had her in for half the show.
Brienne was a strong, badass woman the whole series and D&D made it so one of the last images we have of her is crying outside in her bathrobe because a guy she just hooked up with left her. 🤨
for me id didn’t ruin the greatness of the early seasons but I understand why it did for so many others, but yeah season 5 and 6 are pretty bad with some good here and there while season 7 and 8 are really aweful
It's absolutely wild how the series just completely disappeared from the face of the earth after the last season bombed so fucking hard. HBO ran GoT banners front and center on their site for almost a decade but after season 8 came out, suddenly you can only find the show is if you go out of your way to search for it. The series significantly influenced pop culture every time a season came out and was all anyone talked about when it was airing, but now everyone who knows about it is actively trying to forget it. I don't think I've ever seen an IP that was so firmly established completely self destruct like GoT has
Jon isn't immune to fire like Daenerys was. Remember when he grabbed a lantern, back at the wall, when he tried to burn the white walker? He did burn his hand here pretty badly.
That's a good point. However, natalie had a good point saying it would make a lot more sense if John tried to hide behind the throne and that's how it got melted. If the throne could've shielded him long enough for him to escape behind it and then Drogon kept melting it because he didn't see John escape. That would make a lot more sense then what happened. I refuse to believe that the writers were this incompetent to realize things didn't make sense. I believe the people in charge simply didn't care and wanted to move on as fast as possible.
@@dwaynediamond6431 as evidenced by the last two series being 7 episodes in total short of what it should have been. Those 7 episodes might have barely made the ending make sense but the show runners made a deliberate choice not to do it. They were bored and wanted to move on. Fair enough, but if that was the case then hand the show over to people who did care or were bothered enough to finish it in a way that made sense.
"I know a killer when I see one." says Arya, after Daenerys already murdered thousands of innocent people with dragon fire....yeah Arya, we all can tell she is a killer for, you know, she killed a ton of people already for no good reason!
I mean thats not how it necessarily works, as the word killer has had a more informal meaning for a while even though not official. It's been used in films/TV - where a character has killed, or even killed a lot of people, because of circumstances needing it and when cornered by good guys they use the line "I know you're not a killer". Obviously literally they have now killed, but it is also very obvious what they mean. And it is that difference that this line was using.
@@wwe12153 Tyrion really isn’t as smart as the show & audience made him up to be. Even George says he’s not some genius. For sure he’s intelligent but I don’t truly think Tyrion is the end all of Dragon knowledge lol.

My expectations weren't great after season seven so that probably helped lol. Every time anyone finishes game of thrones and is inevitably disappointed I recommend they watch Black Sails - so to anyone in the comments looking for a show with a big cast of characters, emotional gut punches, political machinations, betrayals, battles and twists - GO WATCH THE PIRATE SHOW!!
+1, one of the best shows ever, and it managed to get consistently better over its run (unlike anything I've seen except Breaking Bad). Too bad that many people don't even give it a chance because of the setting (probably expecting some Pirates of the Caribbean silliness.)
i think black sails' problem is that casual tv watchers who just want mindless entertainment (nothing wrong with that) would go in expecting a bunch of crazy nonstop pirate battles but instead they get a bunch of talking so they quit. And the people who are interested in the dialogue and story might not give it a chance because they assume its a dumb action show.
'What? they don't show the reactions? That is exactly what I wanted to see!' and 'Really? No buildup to that at all?' are like the two key commentaries on the last seasons of GOT. I'm one of the few who will argue to the death that *theoretically,* Daenerys was going to go postal at some point ever since Daeny returned to the Dothraki and embraced their violent rapist conqueror culture in her dragon mounted speech, but even I am *appalled* by the way it *practically* played out. Total rushjob on D&Ds part. Totally robbed me of any satisfaction in going 'I *told* you.' I honestly think I am more upset by it than anyone who just wanted Daeny to be the perfect 'Saviour Queen.' I knew ever since then Dany was 'more Khaleesi than Queen' but not like this, not like *this.*
I believe it will be more classical tragedy like in the books, with Dany still being a good person but every lord of the seven kingdoms seeing her as a female Maegor the Cruel after she mirrors his actions by killing Aegon Targaryen, her nephew, thus becoming a kinslayer, one of the worst sins one can commit in westerosi culture and what was what united the realm against Maegor. Not only that but he would also probably be seen as a savior of the realm by the smallfolk and a return to the Targaryen golden age by people tired of Baratheon rule and Cerceis antics, only for him to be killed in a vicious dragon fight by his "jealous, kinslaying and usurping aunt". Imagine how tragic and poetic if Jon has to kill the woman he loves, not because she would be a bad queen or a bad person, but because it saves the Realm for countless years of war. That would be a perfect end to his character arc, finally sacrificing his honor, his love and everything he believes is right for the greater good. Like this is just a theory, but I think it fits very well thematically and Maegor is one of the earliest history mentions in the books, meaning he was made up early and probably has something to bring to the story other than worldbuilding. There is just so much that is in favor of this that I am convinced that it will be somewhat similar to this, and it would be much more interesting than Dany going "mad" which is an extremely vague term and doesnt really seem like a real mental illness. They just called Aerys the mad king because they dont have an understanding of mental issues, but that doesnt mean they arent there.
I've never seen showrunners be both accidently and deliberately incompetant at such magnitude. D&D did not only not correctly understand the very plotlines and characters they adapted into nonsense, but they DELIBERATELY wrote additional continuity violating nonsense purely for shock value and to undermine theorists. They were so determined to not let fans who knew the series better than they did be right about the ending; it takes a special kind of spite for ones audience when you're willing to destroy the logic of your own show just so fans are wrong about the end.
By S6 it was visible that they were not incompetent but writing to shake and shock the dumbest level of their ever growing audience. The stupid masses loved S6 and only got upset when their beloved super-heroes turned out not to win.
What frustrates me the most about the spiting the audience part is that it’s not even like there was one consensus over the end as a whole, I mean yes certain things were generally accepted but that’s because the story brought you purposefully for years to that conclusion. But finishing the story that people can decipher but making the small details different and more impactful is what makes a show/story good. What they did was pure butchery of what was a fantastic story
Weiss and Benioff, the showrunners, put interviews of themselves at the end of each episode showing them explaining everything that happened in the episode. The result was that they just made their choices sound as stupid as they actually were. Their explanation for why Daenerys quickly turned into a fascist tyrant with no real development boiled down to, "Bitches be crazy." I spent years loving this show, and it ended like this, with Bran becoming King and sounding like he's stoned all the time, because that's how enlightened people are supposed to sound. Horrible. I wish GRR Martin would finish his books so I can get something like closure on this.
"Winter is coming" sounded way cooler before we learned winter is like a week long and actually makes Westerns hotter, transforming King's Landing from lush green to sandy dessert.
Winter in the world of GoT is not actually a season. Sometimes they last a few months like ours do. Sometimes they last years. The Long Night that happened when the Wall was first built lasted for a generation. Presumably, it's tied at least in part to the White Walkers. It's conceivable that defeating the walkers ended the winter. Alternatively, it could be tied to events like the Comet from season 1. A comet passing close enough to a planet could significantly cool the planet for a period of time. Volcanic eruptions, such as the Doom of Valyria, could cool the planet for a period of time. Et cetera. Tl;dr: There is absolutely no consistency for how long Winter lasts. This is canon to the books and to what the TV series had already shown. There's a ton of things to complain about for Season 8, but Winter suddenly being over (especially with the walkers defeated) is not one.
Natalie: "...maybe the bells have always meant surrender?" Sir Davos: "...I've never known bells mean surrender" (born and bred in Fleabottom, lived in Kings Landing most of her s life, circa season 2). And that pretty much sums up the final season. The writers kinda... forgot.
Your face when Tyrion said "Who has a better story than Bran The Broken" was every one of us. Your entire reaction to Season 8 was exactly how the rest of us felt. The only real highlight of this season for me was Tormund.
Bran's personal story wasn't what Tyrion was referencing, it was the fact that he holds the story of all of Westeros as the three-eyed raven (think Druid culture, a people does not die as long as their history is remembered). The rest of the "character problems/personality shifts" all make complete sense if you take into account the weird flow of time and they weren't spoon-fed to the audience or clearly stated in the narrative. Daenerys, for example, was growing more and more jealous of the love the people showed for Jon and then it came out that he actually had a better claim to the throne. Her breaking was not 1-2-crazy, it was a slow burn that the timeline trusted the viewer to figure out. I actually thought that Emilia did a splendid job reflecting her darkening emotions through the last three episodes as she was losing the ones that loved her and followed her (the dragons and Mormont, in particular, but then to feel like she lost Jon too)
Probably another throwaway line from season 3 that was never mentioned again up until that episode (oh wait... that was just her killing the night king)
"So now Cersei doesn't have any scorpions but she does have the Golden Company" "Oh yeah we built those guys up to be bad asses, so what are they going do?" "Die immediately" "Oh my god"
The lack of emotional response to any moments they wanted us to feel "big" says it all. The only time I felt anything in the last episode was when Drogon sniffed at Daenerys' body lol... I think we were all so exhausted by the crappy storytelling at this point where nothing felt like it mattered anymore. The most disappointing ending ever to a show that was so huge and loved!
The ending with Bran is a fantastic example of how you can't significantly cut something down in the adaptation and then spring it on when needed out of nowhere. In the books, Bran is a much bigger deal. A lot of his chapters got cut or condensed, due to many of them being magic focused and D&D wanting to cut down as much magic as possible to appeal to "mothers and NFL players" (exact quote from D&D). Bran being king is heavily foreshadowed in the books in retrospect. He is our first POV chapter and one where he is taught a lesson on how to rule. Where as the show has a generic mystical mentor, his mentor in the books is a Targaryen Littlefinger and Varys wrapped up in one 100 year old sorcerer. Much more than the show, the books emphasize that Bran skinchanging into Hodor is ethically wrong and shows Bran's moral descent. I THINK the implication in the show is that Bran told Jon about his heritage specifically because he mystically knew it would cause a rift with Daenerys and open up a path to winning the game of thrones, but fuck knows cause it was so vaguely written. Bran was clearly one of D&D's least favorite storylines. He has the bare minimum of important material in the early seasons, is literally written out of the show for a while, then given a very simplified version of his mystic journey before becoming the monotone zombie. To anyone who hadn't read the books, Bran is a minor, supporting character and as baffling an outcome as if Grey Worm got the spot. Let's not even get into "Who has a better story than Bran the Broken?" It simultaneously seemed out of nowhere and made perfect and that's because D&D were fucking up even from Season 2, folks. They were skipping what turned out in retrospect to be crucial puzzle pieces but wouldn't be apparent till the puzzle was much closer to being finished six or seven years later.
Literally all the dothraki and unsullied died if you watch 3😂😂 luckily they all respawned and in the last episode she had more troops than she ever had😂😂 painful.
@@dahlizz99 right. The only unsullied we saw at the end of episode 3 still fighting was Grey Worm. He somehow with his little spear survived against hoardes of wights all by himself.

I hope their wives left them
Bran said he couldn't be Lord of anything, but being King is OK. The build up of Jon's heritage means nothing. Dany forgets about the Iron Fleet and decides to go mad for no real reason. Cersei prophecy never came true (it said her younger brother would choke the life out of her, whether it was Jaime or Tyrion), the Dothraki somehow have respawn ability after the Battle of Winterfell...the final season was garbage.
Dany does have a descent, where she sees the price for doing the right thing, going against her extreme "reflexes" has her losing the people she loves. but she went through all of it before and chose the right path. WHY would she suddenly change?
I was so disapointed by season 7 and I was like "they gonna fix this, right? Right?" They didn't. Both dragons went down in a stupid way, makes me want to scream. A lot of characters have had their arches rushed / trashed.. it's really a shame. Daenerys deserved a much better ending. D&D really trashed the ending of GoT for us. It was really fun to get to experience the great moments of the show with you, Nat. I'll keep following you along. :) (sorry for any mistakes, non native speaking-typing)
The showrunners revealed an incredible misreading of the books they were adapting. Also, hilarious how many hyped projects they had lined up until this ending dropped and they became poison
She said from day one she was going to burn it all down. Just because you had some weird fan fiction of her and Jon living happily together doesn't make poison. You and your half witted like are the poison in the GOT Fandom. Just the facts.
That's a lie. George told them bulletpoints of his ending. They only got the show made cause they convinced George they knew Jons story and understanding. You are wrong
@@jacyo3076 The problem wasn't where the show ended up, especially in terms of Dany. It's that they rushed two season and rushed Dany's descent into madness and it felt undeserved and illogical. There should have been at least 10 seasons but D&D wanted that Disney money
The end of season 8 makes sense if you ignore seasons 5-7. It's just that it was so rushed and so badly written that it came across as being really inept (and incoherent at times). As the showrunners said "we realised that it only really makes sense if we're not thinking about it". A lot of the Daenerys warning signs were there from season 1 (and definitely much more strongly from season 2 onwards). She never learned to compromise or adapt and was always heavy handed and tyrannical (at times she was psychopathic).

A damning condemnation of season 8 is that when MAIN CHARACTERS die, you just feel resigned to it like "well, saw that coming, even though it didn't make sense"
Basically everyone worked their asses off for this show, the actors, the vfx guys (especially), the sound engineers, wardrobe, set design, EVERYONE and D&D just took a huge dump on ALL of them.

That is nearly as dumb as them OBVIOUSLY using a line from Mellisandra early in the show, "youll shut many eyes forever brown eyes, blue eyes, and green eyes." To make it look like she (and d&d) ALWAYS knew it would be Arya killing the Night King. Like emphasizing the BLUE eyes part isn't a cheap trick to make dumb viewers go oooooooohhhhhhhhh... aaahhhhhhhh......Destiny.😲😲😲
Ned gets stabbed in the leg and has a limp for the rest of his short life. Khal Drogo dies from an infected cut. Danny gets stabbed in the gut once, dies instantly. Arya gets stabbed in the gut multiple times, then immediately swims through sewage. Not only does she survive, she's good to go for an intense foot chase the next day. That was the episode that really lost me.
Thank goodness the character who trained to steal faces and be a stealthy murderer, not only does not use the ability to steal faces, but does a screaming leap attack against the Zombie Ice King.
Glad you picked up on the fact that Jaime decided to go back to Cersei IN THE SAME EPISODE that Bronn nearly assassinated him on Cersei's orders. This season butchered all my favourite characters so badly that I didn't even care if they lived or died.
My friends started voicing their frustrations about halfway through season 7. I tend to be an optimist, I held on until the Battle at Winterfell against the walkers. I enjoyed that episode a lot the first time. But during that next week while waiting for the next episode I just found myself reflecting on it more and more. Namely how too many of the important people had survived such an impossible battle, and then thinking about needlessly sending the Dothraki riding into the undead horde. Top notch moments from the episode, however was the music leading up to Arya killing the Night King, and then earlier when the dragons were fighting in the sky I thought that was so fantastical and beautiful. But I started to dislike the episode more and more in hindsight. And then every episode I watched I just felt more and more upset. I used to rewatch every season available before a new season aired, and I figured I'd rewatch the show every so often after it ended. Your reaction is the first time I felt like diving back into the world of GoT because it would allow me to relieve the amazing parts without dreading the ending for a long period of time.
25:15 "maybe it always means surrender", In season 2 when Stannis tried to take the capital the bells ring and Davos says, "I've never known the bells to mean surrender" because it's actually a signal for defense.
All of your misgivings are completely legitimate and justified. A huge swath of the fan base felt exactly the same. I personally feel like the creators of the show were burned out and trying to sprint to the finish line leaving a lot of the storytelling rushed and the character development warped in order to wrap up the series.
D&D also thought they had a deal with Disney to write a Star Wars movie, and wanted to finish GoT quickly so they could get to that. That deal apparently evaporated. Makes one wonder whether this ending had anything to do with that.

I’d have preferred it if Dany accidentally set off the wild fire under the city. Then everyone believes she’s become a mad queen because they didn’t know it was there.
"All of this is so ridiculous" - sounds about right. Arguably the most disappointing conclusion (ie last 3 episodes, at least) to what once was on track to possibly be the best show ever made. I agree that Rhaegal's death was the single most ridiculous moment (arguably of the entire series); the way it went down was so improbable from multiple angles.

@@jacobwalsh1888 I do agree that they didn't lead up to it properly but Bran is who GR.R.M originally intended to put on the throne. King, yay?

Conleth Hill's reaction to the script is pretty much how all of us were throughout the season & afterwards

Hell yeah. Loved that moment in the books!

Most of the city would have easily surrendered.
she probably forgot she was an assassin for a moment. like the writers forgot how to actually give a shit.
Yeah she snuck up on the fucking Night King... she would've been able to handle a couple Lannisters and the Kingsguard
Well, she did also forget to ask Bran what was west of Westeros.
Jamie should have been a casualty of the winterfell battle. Would have given his redemption arc a little more sense. After his death Arya could have used his face to infiltrate King’s landing and kill Cersei.

There's no excuse for what was done to these characters. Maybe you could get them to this place, if you took some time and showed us a REAL leadup to these massive shifts, but instead they just dumped it all at once, and tried to pretend that it was the inevitable outcome.

YES!
'What? they don't show the reactions?
So glad Disney fired them after this whole mess. Their writing incompetence really does not need to be added in the Star Wars movie lore.
@@Leo_ofRedKeep So are you agreeing with the OG comment? Or are you disagreeing?
It wasn’t winter…. The “snow” was ash. The throne room was filled with ash. Drogon was sleeping in ash.
When Jaime goes north it starts snowing in King's Landing
Well the show did decide to announce that winter had arrived and then also just decided not to follow through with it
"Winter is coming" sounded way cooler before we learned winter is like a week long and actually makes Westerns hotter, transforming King's Landing from lush green to sandy dessert.
You are right about the ash but it is supposed to be winter now. Winter had arrived.
Natalie: "...maybe the bells have always meant surrender?"
Sir Davos: "...I've never known bells mean surrender" (born and bred in Fleabottom, lived in Kings Landing most of her s life, circa season 2).
And that pretty much sums up the final season. The writers kinda... forgot.
Your face when Tyrion said "Who has a better story than Bran The Broken" was every one of us. Your entire reaction to Season 8 was exactly how the rest of us felt. The only real highlight of this season for me was Tormund.
literally everyone in that arena has an equally good, if not better story than Bran.
Maybe if Bran had a doozy of a story to tell about the whole season he was missing, a trip to Vegas or something...
And the greatest story of anyone alive was sitting in prison and was the real king this whole time.
The only highlight of Season 8 of GOT was the epic battle between The Hound and The Mountain. That's it!
I actually thought that Emilia did a splendid job reflecting her darkening emotions through the last three episodes as she was losing the ones that loved her and followed her (the dragons and Mormont, in particular, but then to feel like she lost Jon too)
"I know a killer when I see one" I wonder how Arya figured out Dany's a killer
She is so smart. Must be that winterfell water.
Probably another throwaway line from season 3 that was never mentioned again up until that episode (oh wait... that was just her killing the night king)
Sansa borrowed some of her galaxy brain powers to her I guess
I burst out laughing when you commented on the lack of feeling regardless of the music playing in the background when they chose Bran to be king 😂😂
Jon: "It doesn't feel right."
Us: "Sooo true!"
It already didn't feel right when Jon wanted to bend the knee for this witch.
"So now Cersei doesn't have any scorpions but she does have the Golden Company"
"Oh yeah we built those guys up to be bad asses, so what are they going do?"
"Die immediately"
"Oh my god"
Super easy, barely an inconvenience

Let's not even get into "Who has a better story than Bran the Broken?"
It simultaneously seemed out of nowhere and made perfect and that's because D&D were fucking up even from Season 2, folks. They were skipping what turned out in retrospect to be crucial puzzle pieces but wouldn't be apparent till the puzzle was much closer to being finished six or seven years later.
After all the deaths, troops kept respawning like a bad video game.
😅😅 this is accurate! “End of the Dothraki” my ass.
"we forgot"
Literally all the dothraki and unsullied died if you watch 3😂😂 luckily they all respawned and in the last episode she had more troops than she ever had😂😂 painful.
@@dahlizz99 right. The only unsullied we saw at the end of episode 3 still fighting was Grey Worm. He somehow with his little spear survived against hoardes of wights all by himself.
@@slenderfoxx3797 yep.. because let's charge a million dead folks with like 5k horses😂 then when they're dead and have joined the dead army we will stand OUTSIDE our large battlements and die instead of staying inside the castle and defend it lik castles are made for😅 I love D&D.. I hope their wives left them
Ah shit, here we go. I haven't hit play yet but I can already hear Nat screaming with frustration
More like quiet confusion.
The author uses prophecy to show how people believe in all sorts of arbitrary things and most of his readers miss the point.
I was so disapointed by season 7 and I was like "they gonna fix this, right? Right?"
They didn't.
(sorry for any mistakes, non native speaking-typing)
The showrunners revealed an incredible misreading of the books they were adapting. Also, hilarious how many hyped projects they had lined up until this ending dropped and they became poison
Reminds me of Zack Snyder's work...
Dany: *Burns thousands of people alive*

She's the smart Stark.
big shout-out to Theon Greyjoy for being the only character that made it to Season 8 that has a satisfying conclusion to his character arc!
Yup.
Tormund and Sam weren't screwed too badly I guess.
@@bigfudge2031 Yea, Sam really did well overall. Maester's chains, baby momma and all! Good boy Sam!
The Hound. It could’ve been better but it was still good
@@bigfudge2031 They weren't TOO bad, but Tormund was just sort of...eh. The character didn't really go anywhere
Sam becoming Grand Maester at the age of like 25, having attended the Citadel for a total of like maybe a year, just felt like it should be the lazy conclusion to a mediocre young adult novel imo
Not just a huge dump on them, but also on all those peoples Moms and Grandmothers faces, while their mouths were open. Then D&D walked off laughing and high fiving about it.
@@KS-xk2so why wouldn't they laugh and high five about it. they shat in millions peoples mouths and got paid millions to do it.
THANK YOU Nat for pointing out the ridiculousness of Arya pissing off on a boat and abandoning her entire family when she mentioned literally ONCE to some random person about 3 seasons ago about "what's west of Westeros?" absolute f**king nonsense writing 😂😂😂
just like her killing the night king, who she had never even seen or heard of before that episode (because of a throw away line from season 3)
@@bigfudge2031 they also retconned that throwaway line because the original quote didnt fit, they had to rearrange it so blue eyes would be last, showing that they clearly never planned that out
You know what's worse? If you read 'The World of Ice and Fire' you'll know that this voyage was tried many times before by people much more experienced at sea than Arya, and EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. it ended in tragedy.
Arya was basically sailing to her imminent death.

“this doesn’t make sense" - a summary of GoT S8
And Season 7 too honestly. All the main plotlines at that point were utter rubbish and contradicted etc etc

@@k0k0mlml I gave S5 a pass and dropped off before the end of S6. It was rotten already.
It made perfect sense it was just really fucking stupid.
The only thing you can say that just flat out made no sense whatsoever, and was actually the exact opposite of what they led us to believe, was Bran becoming king. W..........T..........F?
Bran himself said only ONE season earlier that he "can never be lord of Winterfell. He can never be lord of ANYTHING. He's the three eyed raven now."
Then to piss in our mouth just a tad more....they throw In that FUCKING RIDICULOUS, meant to be profound and destiny ridden comment from Bran. "Why do you think I came all this way?"
Give me a fucking break with that bullshit. That is nearly as dumb as them OBVIOUSLY using a line from Mellisandra early in the show, "youll shut many eyes forever brown eyes, blue eyes, and green eyes." To make it look like she (and d&d) ALWAYS knew it would be Arya killing the Night King. Like emphasizing the BLUE eyes part isn't a cheap trick to make dumb viewers go oooooooohhhhhhhhh... aaahhhhhhhh......Destiny.😲😲😲
ehh, since season 5,
Ned gets stabbed in the leg and has a limp for the rest of his short life.
Natalie: "A lot of that didn't make sense."
Me: Yep. Succinctly put.
@@danieldickson8591 I may be wrong but I believe it was a whole Star Wars trilogy they were offered! The Star Wars fan base lucked out there, they're having a rough enough time as it is haha. We'll never know for certain but I do believe Disney dropped D&D for the public perception of them post-GoT... kinda shot themselves in the foot if that's true.

Everyone is the victim of bad writing. Especially Daenerys
Why? She was always crazy. Hints of it started showing up in season 1. The only people who kept her remotely in check were Jorah and the other people around her like Missandai. All of those people were killed . She was alone. The guy she loved was her biggest threat to the throne. She couldn't even control the city of Mareen how could she possibly rule the seven kingdoms? She spent like 2 seasons making bad decision after bad decision ruling that city. She came to Westeros as a tyrant burning everyone who wouldn't bend the knee with a Mongol savage army raping and pillaging everyone and a army of unsullied with no other purpose in life but fighting. Every tyrant in history has this same type of arc . Promise the down trodden all these great things while villfying the other classes.
