I was born in Salisbury in '50's... Breastfed by a wonderful Shona lady (Hannah)' til I was 4 years old then my parents headed for Zambia (Northern Rhodesia)... Childhood was absolutely halcyon... No other word to describe it... British Protectorate gave us UK in the Bush... Africa is so beautiful... Sadly egotistical & corrupt politicians are spoiling it all...
My father saw the writing on the wall & headed down to SA (The Union) in 1962...

In my opinion as an American purely looking at history, I think Bishop Muzorewa’s government should have been internationally recognized. The bishop was a good leader especially because he believed in non-violence (although maybe I’m biased because I’m a member of the United Methodist church like him). I actually find it surprising in the context of the Cold War the west was so supportive of Mugabe, despite knowing he was affiliated with the eastern bloc. The west generally opposed left-wing governments to a point it overthrew democratically elected regimes such as in Chile. The elected government of Zimbabwe-Rhodesia seemed like a good ally (the bishop was friendly with the west as he had studied in the United States)

We can see overall that the 70's showed a general abdication of America from its coldwar champion position following the Vietnam debacle
In Africa we saw Portugal's former colonies and Ethiopia turn red but at the same time successive administration's were turning to China as a counterweight to the Soviets
Perhaps we should look at the preferential treatment afforded to the Chinese backed ZANU as part of this bigger picture?

Zimbabwe-Rhodesia sounded like the perfect stable in between country of Zimbabwe and Rhodesia. Zimbabwe-Rhodesia was slowly desegregating until Mugabe took power. The potential for ZR was massive in my opinion.

Glad you enjoyed it! Still going to make two more videos on Rhodesia, with one objectively looking at Southern Rhodesia, and the other going further back in time, so stay tuned.

Zimbabwe is such a beautiful country, I wish black and white Zimbabweans would just work things out. its sad to see South Africa is going down the same road as her sister Zimbabwe.

That is true, Zimbabwe is one of the Gems of Africa in terms of history and beauty. Hopefully, Zimbabwe can recover, especially economicaly.

Rhodesia existed for 14 years. An unrecognized nation, with economic sanctions and at constant war. It's just insane how they could have survived for so long. Sadly Mugabe destroyed Rhodesia.

If only the ordinary black, white,Indian and coloured people had been wise enough to see past race and tribalism. We may still have a decent Zimbabwe today. The fact stands that we all lost, if you do not look after what God has given you custody over, you lose it 🙁. Apparently Ian Smith died a miserable death in a nursing home in England being nursed by black Zimbabwean care assistants, he did not want to be nursed by them but he had no choice in the matter. Nice content 👍🏾

      Not true
He continued living in Zimbabwe until
health decline forced him to relocate to
a care home in Cape Town where he died
his ashes being returned to Zimbabwe
      where they were scattered

Unfortunately, very few understood that this compromise was the best at its time. The infrastructure (built by white and black) was completely ignored by the so-called "liberators" - The Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF and ZAPU), who couldn't stay united as they raped the former 'Rhodesia'. Sadly this can easily be verified by examining Zimbabwe today. Zimbabweans have been duped and will continue to suffer unless they stand up and fight. Bishop Muzorewa was not the best, but he certainly wasn't the worst. Go to Zimbabwe now.
