I'm so glad that I have procrastinated for 3 years on replacing my countertops with Stone Coat Epoxy Loved this video and happy to see I can still get some shine and durability when I am ready to renew my kitchen! Thanks Rhonda, you rock it girl!
Just got done with my 3rd countertop and used the UTC Gloss. I made sure to follow the instructions precisely to ensure minimal texture. Unfortunately, the customer felt the texture took away from the dirty-pour effects. Will buffing the surface with the seres of sandpapers in the SC buffing package provide a smoother, glass-like effect?
We completed our turquoise ocean-like countertop this week and couldn't be more pleased with the outcome! I had to stop for a minute and tell you thanks so much for all of your great videos! I couldn't have done it without you 🙂 Want to make sure and point out...I absolutely love the "texture" of this gloss finish. It looks great!

Do a TEST PIECE FIRST! This video has great tips and tricks, however the net result may not be what you think. Do a small test piece first to be sure you are going to like it. For our project the loss of depth and detail was not acceptable and we really wish we had tried a tester first. A valuable lesson learned.
I do love my countertops and as a first time DIY they came out beautiful, but if you’re going to epoxy then yes you must apply a topcoat as I thought epoxy was super scratch proof but they are not! Applying this now!
We just did that but the next day the roller lines were still on the counter. I think it is because it was done in the garage and the temps here dropped in the mid 50's, would this be the cause? and if so what can we do to fix the issue? Thank you
Great video - we did our countertops in 2020 before there hi gloss option was available so it only has the flood coat on it. We have a couple of scratches in it from things being slid across it with something sharp under them. Will this fill those scratches and if not how should I deal with them before doing this to the counters? As for staining we have found that colored alcohols like moonshine cherry juice and bitters have stained it but with a little bit of elbow grease and soap and water we have been able to get it out. We have also had sausage casings stain it but same thing it came out with a little bit of effort. Love your videos - thanks
Good morning. How strong is the StoneCoat countertop product without the Glossy Ultimate top coat? I was really wanting that deep, deep glossy shine without the appearance of the slight texture. We really are not hard on our countertops, just normal use.
@@RK3Designs This statement is very helpful. The UTC Natural was way too matte. Maybe for a dull slate/concrete look, but it looked too plasticky to me. The Gloss was out of stock so I did my installation without UTC. I love the deep gloss shine. I am extremely careful what I place on the surface and usually put down a paper towel first with anything metal. The penny test would really mar the surface. I would never use a Magic Erasure on the unprotected epoxy surface which dulls/micro-scratches the gloss based on my test sample, but would easily work on UTC Natural and Rhonda's UTC Gloss. Even some dusting will scratch the unprotected epoxy (Phoenix desert dust) so I use a Swiffer duster first before wiping with spray. The counters are in an RV that is used a few weeks/yr by old adults so being careful is not that much of a hassle. I would likely use the UTC Glossy in a home kitchen although I would hate to loose that deep clear gloss shine. For deep gloss, maybe best to admit that a new top coat with the original epoxy would need to be poured after a few years of heavy use, maybe much like having to reseal your natural stone every few years.
I is am about to flood coat a second time clear cause I messed up my first attempt. Then off to do UTC I have read the pdf files and watched the videos. In the video you say take sqft X .375= total amount of oz of UTC per area but in the pdf the numbers are .275 which am I to use
Great question I was just wondering this as I’m standing in my kitchen getting ready to attempt to do the top coat an watching this vid I noticed the same discrepancy video she says .375 but pdf I printed says .275 so I’m wondering the exact same thing.
I used gloss utc, and wound up with lint or shedding from the roller how to remove this and it made it a matte finish compared to how the flood coat looked , how do I get the glossy look of the flood coat back ?
Hi Rhonda: Just came across your video and have a quick question. I currently have a laminate countertop that I refinished with the Gianni countertop paint and finish product. After 3 years, the top coat finish is definitely showing signs of wear. With that said, after a light sand on the entire countertop, would I be able to use this SC Glossy Top Coat on my Gianni-finished countertop? (( You and your videos are AWESOME ! You're attention to specifics and detail are excellent.....)) Thanks Rhonda !
Hi there! I’m really not sure about the system that you’re talking about. I would be afraid to give any sort of recommendation not knowing how the process works. But my thoughts are that you should absolutely be able to pour over the top and have no issues. Just make sure the surface is clean of any oils etc. lightly scuff sand and you should be fine.
Is that top coat only applicable to something that is already epoxied or can it be used on other surfaces like wood or on a painted surface, such as an acrylic pour? I'm going to create a tabletop with an acrylic pour. I was going to add a fairly thin coat of clear epoxy after allowing it to dry for several weeks, but if this will work directly over the paint, I'd skip the epoxy pour. I also have an old wooden cabinet I am making into an outdoor plant stand which will get wet and also lots of sun. Can I use the top coat over bare wood or stained or painted wood?
Rhonda we poured UTC and used 3/8 knap and no dry roll. Do you feel that pouring a second coat over the first will help elimante the roller marks and the dimple texture that happened?? Also, on small top did not set up hard. We can cut it with a razor. Thoughts? Great video. Thank you!
Using a 3/8 nap roller and not back rolling with a dry roller will definitely cause texture. You’ll need to sand with 220 until the surface feels smooth. If not, you’ll still be able to see the texture. I’m not sure it will ever get hard enough to not cut with a razor. I’m pretty sure I can cut most countertop material with a razor. 😳
Hi, I used normal UTC but now I want gloss finish, my question is can I use gloss UTC over normal UTC? Do I need to sand normal UTC before applying gloss UCT? Or can I use directly over it?
I have put color and clear coats down, it has been about 2 weeks. I am wondering if I can apply ultimate top coat with just light sanding or should I do a more heavy sanding since the countertops have been curing for 2 weeks. Thank you so much for your work!
Hey there. That’s a great question. I would clean it very well before you start to sand. That way if there’s anything on the surface you’ll not grind it into the finish. I would sand enough to get all the glossiness off. That should be fine. 😊😊. I applied UTC to a countertop that was a couple of years old and it came out awesome.
@@RK3Designs Thank you so much Rhonda. I was worried that if I just lightly sanded the UTC would not stick. Would 220 grit be okay or should I do a heavier grit paper?
Looks nice, but it seems to me from looking where the light shines there is orange peel. What about just using the clear epoxy over the almost finished counter top? For a more gloss and shine without any of the orange peel. Thank you Ron
The UTC had a somewhat visible texture like I explained in the video, but you can’t feel the texture. If you didn’t apply the UTC and just left the epoxy it would be absolutely fine. However the amount of added durability, scratch and heat resistance you get with the UTC is incredible. The tiny bit of texture is worth the benefits you get. 😊😊😊. I appreciate the question and you watching.
6:14 I just did the flood coat on my countertop yesterday. Can the UTC be put on without sanding if the flood coat is still tacky. Or, is it better to let the flood coat fully harden so it can be sanded?
You can do a second coat (not really necessary, the protection from 1 coat is amazing). You’ll need to eat until the first coat is completely dry. Sand thoroughly with 220 or higher grit and really. It will be cloudy if you get it too thick. Just roll it smooth and you’ll be fine.

I am having to redo my stonetop countertop because the filter on my coffee pot fell down into the grounds, thirty minutes later when I went to get my coffee there was a big mess and my countertop had a huge stain. I was able to lighten the stain the first time it happened but after the 2nd time it happened, I guess because the heat from the coffee softened the epoxy. I just got mine in the mail and I am working on an antique table. I just covered my design with a clear coat of resin. How long should I wait before I add this final top coat?
Yes to a certain extent. If they are minor flaws it will definitely cover them up. If they are really large imperfections I would suggest sanding them down before you apply the UTC
Great video as all of your other ones. I just bought the ultimate top coat Glossy yesterday. Can't wait to try it out.. Had a mishap A month ago I ordered the Gloss top coat BUT they sent me the regular matte top coat. After I put it on one of my counters I realized the error the next morning. No gloss regular matte. . Now I guess I'll be doing some sanding with 220 grit to remove top coat ? So glad I just did one counter as a test. 20 sq ft is better than 50 plus sq ft
@@RK3Designs I ordered it from stone coat. Turns out they sent the right stuff. On part of the bottle it said Matte and way above it it said Gloss. I used it and did not like the heavy texture finish. I sanded it all off and used your new way to apply the top coat misting counter ahead of time and using a lot more water maybe more than double the water. Then as you did I kept adding water till it poured off mixing stick easily without laying on surface. It came out very very glossy and very smooth to the touch. It still had that grainy texture look put other than that I love the result and added protection. It's been a month since I finished my counter pour and my wife and I are still in wow ! wonder amazed at how pretty they came out.... PS My wife was DEAD SET against me doing the Stone Coat Counter Tops. She wanted to spend $6000 - $12,000 and have them installed I'd rather 100 % do it my self
Great video! Already placed an order, but can you put this over the original ultimate top coat to make it shiny instead? I have a friend who really wanted a shiny finish but I already did the UTC and would love to give her what she wanted originally.
So is a flood coat different than the UTC coat? Im confused. I want a glossy finish, but between this intro and the other veiny marble finish video Im confused. Is it color, flood, UTC? Or color coat, UTC, flood? Thank you.
Hi Rhonda - I have a project coming up and I am reviewing as many of your videos as possible! Inspiring! Is THIS ☝🏼the product you would recommend for me? I have painted my outdated formica countertops with latex paint, and now want to give them a durable protective coat. THANK YOU!
@@RK3Designs I'm thinking there seems to be no need for an epoxy pour if the top coat is the thing that gives the strength and resiliency. I have a highly patterned floor, otherwise I could really go for something imaginative on the counter, but I have to tone things down now! Hopefully the Ultimate Top Coat will give me the durability needed. Thanks for your help!
I made a bar countertop for my house and recently I managed to stain it with Blue Curaçao. It’s barely noticeable but I’m still really bummed because I put so much into the project. Thanks for sharing your tips I’ll try this cleaner and see how it works out. 🤞🌸
The Blue Curaçao is probably only a surface stain as I don't think it can sink into the epoxy. Try taking 1 part bleach and mixing it with 2 parts water. Pour a little on the stain and let it sit. I have done that with food stains on laminate (red chile) and you can watch the stain disappear before your eyes. You may want to put a few drops on the countertop first in a dark corner to see if the bleach does anything else to the Epoxy first, but I don't think it will.
I have learned much from Mike at Stone Coat, now I also found you. I am confused, is the UTC a resin product, and if so how do you add water and not get rejection??>
Wow, just in time! Haven’t applied my UTC Matte yet. I’ll order the Gloss UTC and use it. Do you have the Gloss in Stock? Thank you, Rhonda! Great video ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Are you talk about before you roll on the UTC? 220 is fine. I would go with a lower grit. You don’t have to sand it completely either. Just scuff to give the surface a bite.
@@RK3Designs thank you. I did it this weekend with 220 and apply the ultimate top coat gloss. It's still a little bit tacky after 24 hours. The temperatures about 73 to 75 degrees inside the house. Is this normal?
A dimpled texture can be caused by several things. Using a nap roller thicken that 1/4 in., not adding enough water and the product being too thick, not switching out your dry roller often enough, over working the product once it’s on the surface or using the product once it starts to thicken up in the pan. You only have about 15 working time.
Unfortunately they are all out of the glossy ultimate top coat. I had it on my wishlist for a while on their website but still not available. They only have the matte/natural finish available.

No gloss regular matte. . Now I guess I'll be doing some sanding with 220 grit to remove top coat ? So glad I just did one counter as a test. 20 sq ft is better than 50 plus sq ft
Oh heck!! Did you order from me or the Stonecoat website?
@@RK3Designs I ordered it from stone coat. Turns out they sent the right stuff. On part of the bottle it said Matte and way above it it said Gloss. I used it and did not like the heavy texture finish. I sanded it all off and used your new way to apply the top coat misting counter ahead of time and using a lot more water maybe more than double the water. Then as you did I kept adding water till it poured off mixing stick easily without laying on surface. It came out very very glossy and very smooth to the touch. It still had that grainy
texture look put other than that I love the result and added protection.
Thank you!! Yes, you can go over the matte finish.
THANK YOU!
Are you going to pour epoxy or go straight over the paint? Either way, the Ultimate Top Coat is fantastic!!! And yes I highly recommend!
@@katie1515katie you bet!!! 😊😊
I made a bar countertop for my house and recently I managed to stain it with Blue Curaçao. It’s barely noticeable but I’m still really bummed because I put so much into the project. Thanks for sharing your tips I’ll try this cleaner and see how it works out. 🤞🌸
Please let me know. 😊😊
Hello can you go back over the piece with epoxy again if you don't like the finish by sanding with 220 grit first
Is there any way at all to apply the UTC with a sprayer?
I have learned much from Mike at Stone Coat, now I also found you. I am confused, is the UTC a resin product, and if so how do you add water and not get rejection??>
Hi there. Thanks for watching. No the UTC is actually a polyurethane hybrid that is rolled on.
After the left over product in your mixing cup dries, it swells up like a sponge and is squeezable.
Does the UTC yellow? Can I use it on white?
No it will not yellow and yes it’s highly recommended for white.
Wow, just in time! Haven’t applied my UTC Matte yet. I’ll order the Gloss UTC and use it. Do you have the Gloss in Stock?
Thank you, Rhonda!
Great video ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I sold out in just a few hours after I released the video but have another 50 bottle being delivered on Monday. I should have them in inventory by Monday afternoon.
Can this be used for floors as well?
Yes. 😊
Why do we need to add the water? Thanks
In the paint tray is that a liner or just a bag?
It’s Press N Seal. You can get it at the grocery store. Works great. Just line the pan.
Where do you live with ur high humidity? I live in Charleston, SC with high humidity would I do the same? Thanx!
We live right outside of San Antonio. You probably have a bit more humidity than we do.
Love it!
Thank you!! 😊😊
Hello 👋. How much is a sq ft. Of a countertop with UTC? Thanks advance.
Mrs Rhonda how long was that cured before you put the new UTC on it
About 22 hours. 😊
Thanks 😊
Can I add epoxy and UTC glossy over a glass induction cooktop? And use it without the epoxy melting?
I would definitely not recommend that.
The texture on mine is like orange peel and I did the same way?
I can’t find the glossy top coat on SC’s website.
The gloss is back ordered right now. We also sell it on our website and do same day shipping. www.rk3designs.com
How well do these materials hold up to heat? I'd like to try on a hearth under a wood stove, but not sure if it'd hold up.
Stonecoat countertop is heat resistant to 500 Degrees. I wouldn't recommend it if the area got that hot for prolonged periods of time however.
can I apply with a spray gun to not get this texture?
Unfortunately the UTC can’t be sprayed.
When can I install my kitchen sink after applying the utc?
24 hours. 😊
I really like that finish, doing a kitchen table, you have the recipe for that accent
Awesome!!! On another note....Which recipe and techniques were used on this board? Did you do the video or have a pdf??? Gorgeous
Was wondering the same thing!,
What’s the name of that stain remover
LA’s Totally Awesome. amzn.to/3y77NDE
Great Video! Can you put this product over wood also? I live in Hawaii and everything sweats, I have new wood nightstands I want to protect. Mahalo.
Absolutely!!! The owner of the epoxy company that I use, Stonecoat Countertop, live in Kona, He uses it all the time. Check out his latest video on his RUclips Channel…Stonecoat Countertops
@@RK3Designs Yes I saw Erica and you on there. I thought they lived in Washington. I'll have to see if I can get some from him instead of paying for shipping.
Should I remove all scratches with higher sandpaper grit and then do 220?
Are you talk about before you roll on the UTC? 220 is fine. I would go with a lower grit. You don’t have to sand it completely either. Just scuff to give the surface a bite.
@@RK3Designs thank you. I did it this weekend with 220 and apply the ultimate top coat gloss. It's still a little bit tacky after 24 hours. The temperatures about 73 to 75 degrees inside the house. Is this normal?
@@garysaunder1383 not usually. I’ve never had it be tacky after that long before. Are you in high humidity?
Thank you, I pray I will be successful.
I dont see it on there website? How do I get it?
We are currently sold out but will have it in stock next week.
www.rk3designs.com/products/ultimate-top-coat
what can i do if i have some high points after the UTC?
I’m sorry I’m just seeing this. You can sand with a very high grit sanding pad (4000-5000) then buff with a polishing cream.
Mine came out all dimpled. Is that normal?
A dimpled texture can be caused by several things. Using a nap roller thicken that 1/4 in., not adding enough water and the product being too thick, not switching out your dry roller often enough, over working the product once it’s on the surface or using the product once it starts to thicken up in the pan. You only have about 15 working time.
Is it possible to spray this from am hvlp?
No unfortunately.
Awesome
Thank you! 😊😊
Have you tried curry stain.
No I’ve not. Need to do that!!
Unfortunately they are all out of the glossy ultimate top coat. I had it on my wishlist for a while on their website but still not available. They only have the matte/natural finish available.
