      wouldn't it make more sense for your father to explain the logical reasoning as to why theft is immoral? it's not very hard to convince someone of that especially when they're your role model. physical beatings of a child aren't ok unless it's a very last resort. they can cause trauma and fk up the kids development. just because it stops bad behavior doesn't mean it's a good parenting strategy.

      Corporal punishment is never the point. What it does is scare the living hell out of a kid long enough for them to mature and be able to realize that the action they did was truly wrong. This is actually quite necessary, especially these days, because kids simply don’t have the capacity to be empathetic enough to realize deep down that something is wrong. The smarter ones may intellectually understand it, but the reason you and I don’t steal is because it’s a poor show of morals. We have that higher level thought due to age, but many kids need that stopgap until they reach the level they can truly feel that it is wrong.
      Trying to reason with a child about morality is more often than not a fruitless endeavor- at best they internalize that YOU dislike it so they should stop, but not that they should stop for themselves.

    Many years ago there was a "discount" store in Toronto, Ontario, Canada call Consumers' Distributing, many of their items were on display... behind the counter. To make a purchase, you filled out a small order form, presented it to the clerk who go into the back of the store to collect it. The clerk would put it on the counter for you to open and inspect, if you were satisfied, you bought it, if not, it went back into the box and back into the storeroom. They went out of business because there were bigger store where everything was on a shelf for you to see/handle, seems this would be a good business model for the Portland area now.

    This is also the reason that Walmart is closing 270 stores. I have worked with visitors in retail in Hawaii for 40 years. The shop I worked in for 15 years expanded & moved to a newer, nicer location. Almost immediately the shocking, OVERT, unapologetic SHOPLIFTING by TOURISTS began! Its like they think everything is FREE. Yet they PAY for Airfare, Hotels, Meals, & Tours, but when it comes to paying for anything else, they feel "Entitled to STEAL!!" Men walk in pick up a pocket knife or piece of jewelry & just shove it in their pockets, not even TRYING to be sneaky! One woman in her 60's with a 5yr old girl came in, spent an hour in the store, and left with a shopping bag FULL of clothes & toys! The Police Station is directly across the street. The owners say that our shoplifting laws prevent prosecution due to the dollar amount that they are "required " to steal before the offense becomes prosecutable. Employees aren't allowed to STOP them! When asking the owner's Wife what to do when Shoplifters walk out with merchandise, she said; Quote; "We will just remember their faces and not allow them to shop here again."Most wear masks. They're TOURISTS (They won't be back)!! Theres no age or economic group, or ethnicity that seems to be more or less responsible, its more than HALF the people that come in. I guess they do the same behavior at home? Yes, those stores that sell the stolen items are places like; EBAY Poshmark, The RealReal, Tradesy, Depop, Mercari, Letgo, etc. Its too bad that these more expensive items cannot have their very own serial number (like autos have VIN numbers), that way buyers and the companies sponsoring the sellers can KNOW if something is stolen or not.

    Unfortunately, we have lost such shame and will delight at low prices and think that we are clever and/or lucky.
    Not only shoplifting but also return abuse is pervasive and affects us all. People will return things they broke or use something for 29 days and then return it to the store for full credit.

    There is a solution for some businesses. I live in Canada and in the 80s/90s there was this warehouse store called consumers distributing where you would go to their location, pick what item you wanted from their magazine and the clerk would send your order to the back warehouse. And the warehouse employees would get your item and send it to the front where you’d pay for it. Consumers disturbing sold everything you can imagine just like an Amazon warehouse.

    There's no point in making new laws if you're not going to prosecute the existing one's on the books. The laws haven't changed. The criminals haven't changed. The only thing that's changed is certain DA's that don't prosecute theft, which leads to more theft, and more brazen theft because we've proven we won't prosecute them. So pass as many do-nothing bills as you want, you're not the ones picking which crimes to actually prosecute. That comes down to the District Attorney and their "prosecutorial discretion."

In the UK you still have the "class" system and other influences, such as area where you can't drive down a street w/o getting your windows smash/grabbed. The BASE is different. But I don't know what happened in the USA: it's been a long time coming and to steal, is to deserve....PAIN. When I returned to Canada in the west stealing on a small scale is just across the board, and the culture doesn't seem to mind it. I miss the USA, circa 1970.

    Hahahaha! The store I work for decided to install Self Checkout and cut employee hours to save money. Shoplifting went up 75%. Trying to cut costs is actually costing them.

    • @starbrand3726
      @starbrand3726 Год назад

      @annacolleen That had nothing to do with it. Minimum wage was $7.40 per hour and went up to $11 per hour. The company was already paying $12 per hour, (lower than other companies in the same area), so that increase had zero effect on them or us. Greed was their only motivation.
      After seeing record profits from COVID for three years straight, my company thought they could make even more profit by replacing workers with machines. No lunch breaks, no sick days. So they installed the stupid machines and cut worker's hours in half.
      Companies will spend thousands of dollars to replace hardworking people instead of investing in those very people. So, when their money saving schemes result in them actually losing money, I laugh.
      They honestly didn't believe customers would start stealing from the unwatched self checkouts? They are surprised that with less employees in the store to keep watch and monitor the merchandise, that customers would be trustworthy? This is called shooting yourself in the foot.
      So yes, I think it's hilarious. Now, my company is desperately trying to get back the workers who quit over low wages and low hours. Hard to do when other companies are paying them more. It shouldn't take a crisis for you to realize the value in the people you employ.
