- “Género 101: Afrobeats Latino” takes a look at the Afrobeats scene from a Latin American lens. With proud Afro-Colombian trio ChocQuibTown as narrators, it takes us on a stunning visual journey through the different musical movements tracing their roots back to Africa and linked through the forced migration of the diaspora. With the drum as the constant instrument through the decades, it tells a remarkable story of resistance and pride, culminating in the contemporary Afrobeats movement that is taking the world by storm.
“Género 101: Afrobeats Latino” is as cinematic as it is educational, beginning with the story of the Wagadu Empire in Ghana, through Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat revolution in Nigeria, and the Afro-diasporic movements in the Americas and the Caribbean, such as Champeta, Reggae, Salsa, Hip-Hop, Reggaeton, and more. . The episode ends with a captivating performance by ChocQuibTown of their new Amazon Original, “Vuelve.” Originally featured on their 2020 album ChocQuibHouse, “Vuelve” returns in an irresistible new Afrobeats version in Spanish, out now and exclusive to Amazon. The new version was crafted by Nigerian producer Mystro, known for his work with global superstars like Wizkid and Tiwa Savage.
This episode features original music from Colombian-American DJ Yonny, Ghanaian-American producer Nana Kwabena and an original screenplay by journalist Jennifer Mota. Fans will also enjoy a special cameo by Latin Grammy-winning singer and actress Aymee Nuviola in the role of Celia Cruz.
