Krampus's name is growing popular in the United States, but most of us don't really know what he does OR that he is partners with St. Nicholas himself. He is in fact just one of many Christmas demons...

Fun story. As a DND Game Master, I always hold a Christmas themed game, usually trying to build around less known or more weird Christmas traditions. A couple of years ago, the idea was simple: the players will be Subkraampi, a race I created as a "Lesser Krampus", and their goal was to cause mischief and havoc in a city. They had one night to do so.
Long story short, the characters realised that religion is the biggest mischief you can ever do, so they founded the Church of Kramplikan, with the Krampope leading the church.
I am a proud member of the Kramplikan since that.

      ...
It is not the only shit-related Christmas tradition there.
There is the custom of, in the middle of your "belén", your nativity scene, have a "caganer". A figure of somebody squatting to shit.
It is so popular than now there are "novelty" caganers, with famous figures of the news or the arts or sport.
No, I dont have any idea why Catalonian Christmas is so invested in poo.

The Krampus creatures remind me so much of a tradition in my own country.
In Bulgaria somewhere around the end of Winter there are people called "Kukeri" who dress in furs and wear big intricate masks with horns and fangs portraying animals or monsters. And, guess what, they also wear GIANT BELLS. Sound familiar, eh? Their scary attire and the noise the giant bells make are supposedly used to scare away the evil spirits of winter (in similar fashion of how scary halloween costumes ward of spirits). They go on parades, dance, jump and play out scenes (agrarian/fertility related if I'm not mistaken). It's most probably an ancient pagan tradition and the same thing can be seen throughout the Balkans and I've heard about similar traditions in other parts of Europe too. The Krampus parades in central Europe are quite similar I suppose. I think scary wintery monsters like the Krampus and in the ones the Kukeri portray definitely have some ancient common roots. Just goes to show how far back the origin of this myth probably goes.

Belsnickel is not the same character as Krampus. Belsnickel is from the Palatinate, which is also the region of origin of most of the Pennsylvania Dutch (and mine too btw). Belsnickel looks more man and less goat-like than Krampus. His name comes from how we pronounce the word "Pelz" (fur) and the name Nicholas. In Nothern Germany there is another similar character called "Knecht Ruprecht", who unlike Krampus and Belsnickel, isn't a demon at all, just an evil man.

Had an xmas D&D oneshot the other day. Saint Nick was gone and his son, kris, had made the pole a most unjolly place. The loyal elves, the snowmen, would drag off those in the workshops and bakeries who sowed dissent.
They freed the Krampus from the tree he was sealed in by santa, Nick's father, kris' grandfather. The order of things had been long since broken, before the kids were getting coal, and with Kris ' lack of care, presents like the good ones.
Krampus beat Kris to death with his switch and the head of the teddy bear department was elected the new Santa. Christmas was saved. I mean, bad kids are being beat with a switch again but the nice list will be much better next year.
