- Heidi Douts recently tooled around Long's Park on a cool afternoon. She was riding in her DPV, or dog-powered vehicle. Aya, a Rottweiler, pulled Douts on a three-wheeled cart fashioned from a bicycle and a jogging stroller. Read more: lancasteronline...
That looks like so much fun! And it’s pretty cool because Rottweilers were actually bred to pull little carts.
I thought they're bred to kill people

To anyone who doesn't like this -- Rottweilers were originally working dogs bred for pulling! Now they are mostly bred for companionship, but that doesn't change what they were originally designed to do!
This is a great idea for seniors with mobility issues...transportation, companionship and security.
I do this with my dog but on my bike, he runs as fast as he can and he absolutely loves it. He's a doberman
i always feared what if they see something they want to chase and its the other direction? you go flying off?
Oh yeah it's about recognising the signs that he has smelt something and wants to run a certain way, i use my body weight on the bike to stop him, he has a body harness so that makes it easier for me to prevent him from running until we pass the dog/cat lol
dobie squad! mine got hit by a car
KizzyyB me to. mines 10 months old loves it. i use a 30ft retractable leash
@@1111111111202 -- It can get "exciting" at times... :) Especially when you are first training them and they see no problem with running in front of you from one side to the other and you have to slam on your brakes. I had to slam on my brakes once and the leash was in the hand that controlled the rear brake, so I when I hit the front brake with the other hand, I ended up flipping forward and going face first towards the pavement. You really don't want slack to develop in the leash and they cross over either since that could result in it getting tangled with the front wheel with a similar outcome... Let's just say that it is a "learning experience" for both the rider and the dog... :)
Gonna be training my dog to do this when I can afford a cart. She’s 40 lbs and a staffy mix but I’m loosing weight and she’s already able to pull way more than expected in a sled, and a cart seems like it would be easier for her to pull.
This dog can run for hours and not get tired and we don’t have a treadmill to run her on so I think something like this would be good for her.
I love it. The dog is enjoying it.
Rotties are related to Swiss Mountain dogs like the Bernese and Great Swiss Mountain dogs. Those breeds were used as pulling dogs to pull carts with 6 huge milk cans. It was one of the things they were bred for. That's why the Greater Swiss is the strongest pulling dog in the world. It has the world record.
This just absolutely kicks ass. The dog is loving it, she's loving it, she's able to control the dog very well and they're both having fun!
Her set-up is awesome. It looks like she really did her homework on this. Great job, Heidi. That's the way to literally, harness the excess energy your Rottweiler has an abundance of!
OMG I LOVE this, I am handicapped and suffer from drop dead fatigue and am getting a service dog. I was concerned about how to make she he gets enough exercise. What a win/ win situation, dog gets exercise and I get out of the house! Hope I can build one of these and hoping the vet will clear a dog to pull it! PS - I LOVE rotties!!!!
I am in EXACTLY the same situation!!! My service dog is going to be a Dobermann (the European kind, since I live in west Europe). I've already researched (dog) threadmills and backpacks to make sure he could spend his energy while I lay in bed, but this idea is so much better! I wouldn't need a disability scooter either to go on walks ^_^.
If you make this electric you could also let the dog loose for some much-needed sniffing time as well. Great idea!
(Edit:) I got this video from a dog cart plans site, it has a LOT of ideas and info. Good luck with it!

That is the coolest thing I've seen in a while. I know the dog looks forward to going.
What a good girl. Beautiful Rotti and she's pulling that cart along like it's nothing.
Omg this is so cute he holds his head and body so well almost like a mini horse😂😂😂

It's not cruelty. The dog is enjoying it, plus he's getting his daily walk. This is just another creative mode of transportation, and the rider is *not* whipping the dog.
Calling this "cruelty" is like saying it's cruel to make horses pull carriages, or when people ride on horses, you hypocrites.
***** So what is your opinion on huskies?
A dog is not a pony or a horse. A husky is bred for this and has a different build. Here you wouldn´t come far with this, it´s forbidden. For a very good reason...
Saartje Hond if the dog got a good hip, there is no problem.. if the dog has a bad hip doing things like this is hurtful and can damage the dog.. However this is also true for huskies. Also there is a diffrens between huskie and other dog, this one is going in slow paste huskies is able to run at full speed for miles.
Robin Axberg Still isn't allowed here. Also because people keep pushing them. You see video's on youtube where dogs have to pull cart in the bloody heat. THAT is why it's not allowed here, people don't realize they're slowly killing their 'loved' pet.
***** Also a dog can´t sweat and is overheated VERY quickly. There´s no way you can compare a horse with a dog.
Rotties LOVE to pull, it's their favorite game, other than tug of war. I would love to have a cart like that. I'm training mine to pull now - he loves it. They just have to get used to the sound of something behind them.
Dogs enjoy having a purpose and working much like humans.
Oh yeah I LOOOOOVE working...
This isn't a purpose. This is cruelty.
@@lazerzard4505 how is it cruel? Rottweilers were originally bred to round up cattle then pull the meat to market.
How is this cruel? Is she whipping the dog?
Most dogs would absolutely love this I'm sure, so long as they're strong and healthy enough.
@@lazerzard4505 my dogs would go apeshit every time I pull out the harnesses and wreck my crap if I didnt run them. No other explanation... Dogs with drive that are trained positively and conditioned properly are happy as working dogs and should not be kept bored like fish in a bowl
Love the bit where she she stops by the lake and looks like the dog is thinking ohh shall I take her in there PMSL.
love this cart. Must make one for my St. Bernard cross Bernese.
This is awesome. I would love to get one or make one of these carts and the dog seems to be loving the exercise
I am going to build or buy one of these carts. I am 73 & handicapped. I have the perfect dog. He is Australian Cattle Dig mixed with a big Pitbull. Same size as your Rot. Great video. Aloha from Hawaii ❤
He even trots like a horse haha this is so neat!
Rotties were bred to pull meat carts to market. So she's just working him like a hunter works his dogs. I'm getting one soon. :)
Don't objectify the rider like that. She's more than a piece of meat.
She? Did you just assume their gender?
spend the extra money and get a well bred rottie - please. Make sure their heart and hips are checked out, we never had hip, eye, or heart issues and we just forked out the 1800 bucks and never had to worry. All of them were trained to Good Citizenship training as service dogs. Get the best - get a rottie

stop eating animals hahaha nice.
I'd love to hear more about how you made the cart. I'm thinking about getting a husky, but I'd be in an apartment and would need a good way to exercise him when he gets older! This looks great
This gives taking your dog to work day a whole new meaning
Thanks for this post! It inspired me to train my husky to pull a bike as soon as she was old enough. Now we're out together all the time and have just started a RUclips channel of our adventures. Thanks for the inital inspiration. All the best!! xx
A Rottweiler in its natural habitat. That’s a happy Rottweiler.
I forgot that rotties were originally bred to pull carts, great idea

Squirrel! Right thru the sticker bush . Into pond! That's what my dog would do lol.
Well, that's a pretty good way to exercize your dog as long as you don't overdo it. That Rotty looks strong and healthy. 👍
Are you the mutt police 😂. I think if it got tired it would rest., Or are you saying it's too stupid to stop when it gets tired? 😂😂 Omg I can't with you dog lovers. The more dog obsessed, the lower the IQ 😂😂😂😂😂
Now that's a working dog. Yea!
whats the difference between a horse and buggy and a dog and buggy? Nothing. People just assume its weird because media portrays dogs as a cuddly ball of fur and horses as a working mans tool.
What a stupid comment
GimmitheBong you’re incredibly an educated human. Look at the cart that the owner is riding in, it has petals for heaven sake‘s she’s assisting. Rottie’s definitely need to have responsibilities, tasks even in short bursts. Otherwise you’re going to see couches shredded and Wood trim devoured within the home. Of course you would never choose to employ a dog that is too small or the wrong breed. Take into consideration if temperature are too high or low. Even though our breed would not be suited for this activity, if my Australian Shepard does not have a job to do our house becomes her den of destruction.
@@nokaoimaui05 great way to justify dog labor as a means of giving them "purpose". That's so fked up, have the dogs run outside, go hunting, do something that doesn't require the dog tied up to a human forcing it to move her.
@@nokaoimaui05 At least not a single... if you go with a smaller breed, you need a combined team, six, eight, ten, or twelve-in-hand... or you get your chihuahua to pull I tiny cart of flowers, or another chihuahua... something lighter and within it's capabilities.
Difference between a horse and buggy and a dog and buggy is that a horse is fucking massive and a dog generally isn't...? Literally even the biggest dog breeds on the planet like mastiff types only hit the 200lbs range whereas if you Google horse weight it comes up in the 800 to 2,000lbs+. On top of that, many horse breeds not only outweigh but loom over the average person whereas only a few dog breeds can reach lengths comparable to human height. That's why nobody bats an eye at one horse pulling one person but eyebrows get raised when you replace said horse with a dog. (Not _dogs,_ mind you, as nobody would care since multiple animals means less load.)
Wish the creator of this cart would make an instructional video!

Always wanted a team of Rotties to pull me around in my wheelchair
I trained my golden/rottie mix to pull a wheelchair! I have Cystic Fibrosis and sometimes im to out of breath to walk him. Now he gets to trot along at cruising speed and I ride behind him able to breathe!
I know its kind of out of subject but please read a book called Medical Medium by Anothony William (about your cystic fibrosis)

Why would someone down vote this? It makes Rottweilers happy.
Where can I get one of these, I like the 3 wheeled version, less tension on the dog, even a diagram would do, one of my rotties would love this
This looks great for someone who has a dog with far more stamina than the human, hahaha
Also looks like it'd be a good backup option for anyone with a big dog, for days when you're feeling slightly sick and can't stand to walk or run with the dog, but the pupper still needs his exercise.
I had five rotties in my past they was trained for military and police work actually they could climb on trees or jump from rocks in the water and of course they could pull even a ATV those dogs are so much fun but they need work now I switch to German Shepherd they're pretty good but in another way but so far I am happy.
Heidi you do a great job :-)

Best cart I have seen. With the third wheel kepts the dog from carring weight. This way it just pulls
This is amazing. Didn't know dogs like it so much.
I have been trying to find a cart like this one!! I like that it can be taken apart for traveling. I would prefer 3 wheels to put less pressure on the dog's frame.
Here's a site! They're pricey but worth it if you don't plan on making your own. ik9carting.com/?page_id=66

I'm about ready for a nap... but I still liked this video a lot!
super cool, what a good looking pup, now you just got to start adding some friends
this reminds me a bit of the time I made a saddle for my Yorkshire terrier, and trained my 6 month old son to ride him, they had lots of fun.
its all fun until ""SQUIRREL!!!!!""
i think he's bred too well for that - she has him under control
Why u talkin funny alpha?

If you do this with a kurzhaar!!!
exactly why my dog couldn't do this.
Rottweilers aren't particularly prey driven and can easily be trained not to chase squirrels and rabbits. Squirrels would come right up next to my Gideon because he radiated gentleness. My Bruno was the same way. I watched him bump noses with a ground hog once.
I want to do this with my Argentine Dogos. I think they would LOVE this. Dogos love having things to do; they love having jobs. And they are a powerful breed. Something like this would be right up their alley.

I have a husky and I want one too
Anyone know where to find something like this?
So awsome, the breed serving it's purpose
Beautiful dog!
love the low profile,
I trained an Irish Setter to do this when I was just a kid. Used an old goat harness. Great fun!!!
This is not cruel nor bad for the dog . On the contrary its a very good exercise for the dog and deepens the bond between the dog and its owner . Some dog breeds like the Husky and Pit-bull for example benefit greatly by such exercise .
Will look into a DPV ASAP.
My Aussies LOVE to pull. Thinking of doing this for them for fun, get all three working as a team and give them some good conditioning. Does she have a DIY or recommendation on how to get that cart?
might need 10 chihuahuas
I remember seeing a German dog handler using one of these things at Camp Bastion, great way to practice dog movement commands
Where did you get your cart? Or did you make it? I have been looking for one....
No wonder that rotweiller is in such great shape. Love it
I’d love to see you try a y-shaped harness on her. They’re much better for pulling and running in as dogs shoulders move a lot while running and those types of harnesses restricted movement and have caused many mobility and joint problems and pain in dogs.
this has nothing to do with being lazy u fools hahaha i cant believe people are even making that argument. This is healthy for the dogs body and mind.
agree!!!!! my friends aunt does it to and she says its to get some muscle power on the dog ~ simply a type of training
Omg these dogs love this - they live for it. If you're getting a working breed why would you waste them by not working them? At least train them Schutzhund or service, or pulling. THEY CAN PULL CARS. Mine pulled me and the entire couch across the carpet one day with me holding the rope, with her mouth.

I'd really like some more details on how you constructed your cart. I want to make my own dog cart for my northern breed dog (approx 65 lbs currently) so he can pull my groceries and maybe me one day.
If a dog is pulling more than they should then I don't like it and I think it's wrong. This dog is fine with the carts and can pull it easily. Sounds like your dog has fun being walked.

Oh look, a squirrel!
Dog bolts HARD right over cable/stump fence thingy, sending cart & unfortunate human flying through the air, into tree, then dragged a few blocks until squirrel goes up tree. Dog barks chaotically for several minutes, pees on tree, poops frustratedly, uses tongue as toilet paper, then licks unconscious human's face for several moments until help/gawkers arrive.
Of the 17 people in general vicinity, 13 of them have GoPros on & focused solely on dog/woman catastrophic event happening...in real time. 48 more people rush to the scene to give comfort & moral support to the traumatized dog, while shaking their heads & scowling at woman for her audacity, as she tries to figure out what gaw'damn planet she's on, due to the tree her head assaulted at approximately 19 mph, through the air.

That was a great video! I could see how excited Aya was in the car, you couldn't hook the cart up fast enough for her, haha. She is probably the nicest Rottweiler I've ever seen, very sleek and muscled out nicely. Do you have diy plans for this cart? The carts online are outrageous! This spring I will be purchasing a team cart and harness for my sons Shetland ponies, and I'd like to get a cart for my husbands pointer/ lab mix. Then we can all go carting one day. My mare is already trained to pull a cart, but I can totally picture my husband being pulled by his dog, my son being pulled by his pony team, and me driving my trusty mare! I have a store where I can get a jogging stroller for cheap, but not sure what parts I would need. Any tips or advice would be wonderful!

Thank you for this video. I'm trying to build a wagon for my Rottweiler and I am looking for some examples. beautiful working dog she has there.
The right type of harness is essential , very important . It’s easy to give them arthritis and degenerative joint issues this way .They really shouldn’t pull anything heavier than a child. Hopefully she checked this out with a vet/ trainer to make sure she’s not damaging the dog .
Are you a vet? 😂 Dog expert? Omg I always feel smart after reading comments from dog lovers 😂
@@gurlno7431 Not sure what you feel so smart about. It's somewhat common knowledge that harness and other equipment we uses on both canines and horses should ideally be correctly fitted and ergonomic. Have you been asleep the past 30 years or just uncaring, or ignorant or all three, plus? I'm fortunate to have received a lot of professional training in my life as regards both dogs and horses, with the latter thanks to being a former three day event rider, and with the former thanks to being trained to handle and work obedience, companion and guard dogs with an AKC certified trainer and former military handler. Thanks for asking. You?
