  • A rising river really turned on the trout and the fishing was great. Euro nymphing with pink beaded flies was the way to catch the big rainbow trout and it quickly turned into my best day euro nymphing this river.

    Well done 👏 ✔ Johan.
    You did again.
    You might be pleased 😀 to know that I have gone and hooked my first 2 large trout on my Czech 🇨🇿 nymphing rod.
    Was fishing 🎣 the T the other day and lost a rainbow 🌈 short of the bank.
    Then all hell broke loose when I landed a prime condition rainbow.
    5 and quarter pounds.
    I am a full convert of this style of nymphing.
    Was on your favorite pool or one of those.
    The B/R what a stunning pool.
    Keep it up my friend.
    Tight lines.

      That's awesome Craig. So good to hear you had some solid fish on the Czech nymph setup. It's such a great way to fish. The small Taupo rivers are on fire too. Just had an incredible session today. So get out there and get some more. Tight lines

    Another fantastic video, Johan. I have recently bought a euro nymph set up from Barrie and hope to try it out somewhere in Turangi region soon. I am absolutely green at it and have never done it before. I usually swing with a switch rod, because I’ve had shoulder surgery, Which seems to have limited my ability to overhand cast. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos.

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  2 года назад

      That's awesome thank you. Euro is definitely similar to the swinging in terms of strain on your shoulder, but you need to do it right. When you start out you will find yourself holding the rod out reaching to keep the line off the water. That will tire you out and is not needed. Just keep your elbow next to your side and keep the rod tip up. The tiny extra reach and contact from reaching your arm out is not worth it. It will take you some time to figure out the casting. It is certainly different and it's easy to want to use more power. Like all fly casting that's not the answer. It's timing and applying a tiny amount of power at the right time. Start with water loading and fishing close until you get accurate. One of the key things with casting is waiting until the line straightens on the back cast before going forward and using only one false cast. Slow down and less power. It just takes a small flick of the wrist to sent those flies miles, even small tungsten beads. Your leader will also make a big difference. Keep it simple and somewhat thicker to start off with. I use all 0.3mm duo sighter material for mine and that really helps casting. A micro loop or superglue splice to the euro fly line really helps with smoothing out the casting. If you have any questions don't hesitate to click me an email of FB message. We can even do a video call to talk things through if you want. Thanks for all the support and hope you really enjoy it.

    Great watch thanks.Which tippet ? seems little suspect.

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  2 года назад

      Nah not the tippet. It's the same ILFF fluro I have been using for the last two years and have no issue. Used it the previous day and only lost one fish on 4x. Most of the bustoffs broke at the knot. Cole hands and lazyiness not testing my knots propperly is most like the reason. Also its very snaggy and the fish are big. Often the second fly hooks up and can cause a bustoff too.

      @ShotawayFilms 2 года назад

      @@CrazyAboutFlyFishing unable to find the tippet online but take your word for it.Here on our reservoir rainbows the formula is the strongest for diameter which varies depending on the brand.I do get it looking at the fishing and stamp of fish.👍

    Nice video 👍👍👍 do detect most of your strikes by feel or movement of your sighter ?

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  2 года назад +1

      Thank you 😊. I would say if you pay attention to the sighter you often see something happen slightly before you feel it but I find feeling it is what triggers me to strike more often than just the sighter alone. I'm not inclined to strike at anything as is often advised. I think that risks foul hooking, especially in these winter schools of fish so I tend to wait for a fairly positive take.

    Another great day fishing and video Johan. Well done! We just got back from the same river this weekend. You can tell it's been fished quite hard these last few weeks with the other rivers being flooded out. But it does still fish well. We even tried Euro and my fishing buddy really proved its effectiveness. Something I'm going to have to practice up more on. Thanks!

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  2 года назад +1

      Thanks Eric, much appreciated. It's a great river and seems to handle the pressure well. It's funny I never fished it until last year because other rivers were flooded. It's a prime stop for me now and the perfect size and flow for euro. Let me know if you are going to try the Euro thing and I can talk you through what's involved. Hopefully we catch up on the river again some time.

    It's interesting how that river can turn on and off, based on how the dam outflow is controlled. A pool can be nice and deep, then later drain out so you can see the bottom. Have you tried the river up the main road which is also seldom blown out by floods, as it's spring fed? Also, if you're taking a couple for the smoker, sometimes a chunky jack is better eating than a silver hen which looks fat but is in reality full of eggs, but thinner flesh. Anyway, great effort with the vid, mate.

    • @CrazyAboutFlyFishing
      @CrazyAboutFlyFishing  2 года назад

      Thanks for the tip on the Jack vs Hen. Ill remember that. I have only tried the one up the road a couple of times and the last time I got so lost on the tracks trying to find spots I had been to with friends that I hardly ended up fishing. Need to take a spare couple of days and give it a propper go. It looks really good.

    • @thor_6886
      @thor_6886 2 года назад

      @@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Yes, the hens put their condition into growing the eggs, I believe. That river further north gets fresh runs when there's a classic southerly storm backing up the mouth, as opposed to needing heavy rain - so it's quite a good option if the Tongariro is tricky due to the wind. You are skilled at fishing the same sort of water on the river in this vid, so you'll go well.
