    I saw another artist use white gesso to mix with the acrylics! It made the acrylics matte and textured enough to allow for pastels to stick nicely either over or under or in layers:)

    Yes I have done this and it is beautiful. It enriches the artwork. A double dose of wonderful. - PS. I used mine on a gray oil pastel paper with a slight rosy tone. I mostly roughed in flowers and stems in white oil pastel and drew in a vase outline with some lines in it. The vase was on a table top with fallen petals around it. The vase had oil pastels that were blended really well. Then I used colored pastels to add color bits to flowers. And I used my finger tips (swiped) to put in thin petals of acrylic. No spray between mediums. I had no trouble drawing over the acrylic with oil pastels or visa versa. Petal thin spots had oil pastels. It was impressionistic. I still have the artwork 25 years later and it looks luminous. No fading. I used top quality supplies on par with your French pastels, and that makes a difference in how it ages too.

    Just a suggestion, store all your paints, markers and anything that will dry out in Lock n Lock. I have some paints and markers that are probably at least 15 years old or better. They started out in Tupperware and then I caught on to Lock n Lock and they seal way tighter. Amazon sells their version of Lock n Lock and they work great too. All my acrylics are good and so are all my fine tip markers. The lose ones that were in drawers were dried out and I had to pitch them. They were purchased at the same time as the markers in the Lock n Lock. Just a suggestion. I love my paints and I am cheap when it comes to replacing something I shouldn't have had to replace had I put them where they belonged. Just a suggestion. Especially now, paint is very expensive. Even the cheap stuff. Oh, and one other thing. If you buy acrylics in the bottle like DecoArt or FolkArt, etc stand them on their caps instead of up right. I have some paints that are more than 25 years old and they are still good. I hope this is helpful. Not trying to be a smarty pants.

    Thank you for sharing! It was nicely done and wonderful to find a sister Christian artist out there! I hadn’t thought of using pastels over acrylic but I have used pastels over a watercolor underpainting which works well and doesn’t require the gesso. I am working mostly in acrylics on canvas right now because I don’t have to frame, deal with glass and dust when taking my work to shows. I like the gray palette but the paper is thin and gets wrinkly, so I’m thinking of laying a sheet under a piece of glass to keep it flat. Great video! ❤

I am going to spray it with fixative, but I haven't been able to get any. I do have some but it's a pump spray bottle and isn't fine enough for a final coat. Keeping my fingers crossed. I so ❤️ your tutorials, especially your $ saving tips. I have one for you. A glass pane from your local diy store makes a great palette. For safety, I put duct tape on the entire back. The tape makes it safer if you drop it and it shatter, with the bonus of quick clean up. When you need a clean surface, just use a razor blade. Happy painting.

      Hi @janigoe7381, I never spray a fixative on a soft pastel painting since it always darkens the final image.
      To protect my final painting for shipping or storing, I place them in a clear plastic bag I get from www.clearbags.com/bags/flat/flap-tape/crystal-clear. I buy the bags a bit larger than standard sizes so I will have room for the painting and a piece of foamcore board cut to the size of the painting. Not being facetious but really want to know the reasoning. What would be the reason for painting with the two mediums together rather than just making a painting from one or the other.

      Hi sweetheart, glad you liked it. I always recommend buying quality pastels, but they can get expensive! I recently discovered a brand on Amazon that is really good for a great price. It’s called Paul Rubens. They have a 40 set and a new 36 set. I’m about to do a review on the 36 set and I’ll be sharing it soon.
      36 Set / currently on a prime day deal:
      Paul Rubens Professional Soft Pastels, Handmade 36 Vibrant Colors Chalk Pastels Smooth and High Adhesion for Painting, Drawing, Ideal Art Supplies for Artists, Beginners a.co/d/iSYYUUQ

    Can you switch the layering up and put acrylic paint on top of soft pastel??

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  2 года назад +1

      That’s a good question, but if you add acrylic on top of soft pastel it will liquefy the pastel. Could be fun to experiment though.

    How do you frame a pastel?

    • @beverlyhayshouston2770
      @beverlyhayshouston2770 Год назад +1

      I’m not answering for Susan but I was a picture framer for years. Ask for a reverse bevel on your mat. That way any loose pastel will fall behind and not pile up on the exposed bevel. Always use a frame that has glass and not acrylic for a covering. Framing grade acrylic builds up static and can pull off the pastels.

    How do you varnish an acrylic, pastel painting?

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  Год назад

      Because you add soft pastel on top, you do not varnish the final painting. Pastel paintings are best framed under glass.

    If you believe in Jesus, do not accept the ideology of homosexuality. "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will." - Romans 12:2

      I love the book of Romans. Paul makes it very clear (through the Holy Spirit) of what separates us from God. I love all people, but that also means loving people enough to share the truth. :)

      You are correct. I’m actually a writer and if I was writing a serious article, I would definitely not use the word “cheap“. But I’m a southerner and I believe when we’re just talking amongst friends, we can take a little break from sounding so professional all the time. My channel is very chilled and I think that’s why many people like it.
