I am a firm believer in buying the bike you want, and then learning how to ride it. Start slow, practice, read and learn what you can. The passion for the bike that you really like will keep you engaged in that process.
Thats exactly how i was taught from my father.
Just purchased my first motorcycle at the beginning of this year a 2023 Streetg glide. My uncles ride road glides and although my bike is big the road glide fairing felt bigger or further back which made me not confident. So far I put 650 miles on it and I’ve dropped it one time coming to a stop in the parking lot with the forks turned. Since then there are things I’ve learned just like you said and I will say for my first bike I’m glad I got something that would motivate me to ride and learn.
I always tell people, after 35 years of riding... If you learn how to ride, you need to learn how to wreck them as well and walk away! I've wrecked a few and always walked away, usually under 25 mph!
My first two motorcycles were a used Kawasaki and a used Honda. They were like in the 400cc range. That was almost 30 yrs ago. My goal was to eventually get a Harley and the Lord provided. My first Harley was a used sportster (1987?) I bought in the early or mid 90s. Then I got a new 1998 dyna wide glide. After that was a used 2000 ultra classic. Now I have a 2019 street glide special. I remember my (cool) uncle had a goldwing in the 70s/80s. Him telling stories of trips and camping got me thinking. That would be cool to do. I have been doing it and loving it. Looking forward to the next video.
I learned on a 2007 Honda 250 Rebel. I had it for a yr. Then in Sept 2008 I bought a 2008 H-D XL1200N Nightster. I ❤️ my bike!!
I recently purchased my first bike, a 2013 Harley Davidson fat bob. I’m excited to start learning!
I bought my first bike last week. 2014 street glide. Honestly Tall I was of course nervous at first but after my first ride it went away the bike rides it self. I love it. I'm going to take the Harley class here in Indiana so I can get my endorsement. Also to learn of course. I know from listening to your videos there is a ton I don't know even though I feel like I was born to ride.
POV is real! When Tall does his headcheck I look too, like I'm on the bike lol!
As a former Motorcycle safety foundation instructor Agree with most of the things that you have stated About learning your motorcycle
Great video. My suggestion was always start small and slow - especially if you are starting on a sport bike... Folks really underestimate the power of a liter sport bike. Having recently made the switch to a tourer (getting old I guess lol), I find that's more about the technique of riding - so I can see a beginner starting off with the tourer/bagger they want, but just taking it slow. Most important thing though is ride ride ride.
Hey Tall! My wife is learning how to ride and I got her an Iron 883 to start with. She now has her license and is slowly going on the road. She knows eventually and can already tell she needs a more powerful bike. Her next bike will be a cruiser or maybe touring.
Lot of good information in this video! Tall my first bike EVER was a 2020 street glide. You were a inspiration behind that. I did take SO MANY precautions tho and even made a video on it bcz t was looking for videos before I bought my bike. It can be done tho, to buy the bike you want as ur fist bike
You are speaking nothing but truth. I really didn't know my bike until I rode from Illinois to New Jersey. When I bought the ultra, I did not know that bike until I put a 3-hour ride there in a 3-hour ride back.
Started on HD883 and still have it. Upgraded to the bike I wanted last year Road King!!I’m not as confident on it as I was with my 883. Doing a lot of practice to get used to the weight of the bike. I will ride it daily and get my confidence back! Thanks for making this video Tall. I watch all your stuff and I appreciate your knowledge.
Hey Tall, I'm passing through your neck of the woods. Just took a picture with your poster 2:02
I just went through this dilemma. I’m a new rider, 2 months now. All the videos say start on a small bike, my buddy who has been riding his whole life said get the bike you want. I bought a 2022 Honda rebel 500 and taught myself to ride. A month later I bought a 2023 Indian challenger. I like the Honda and I think it was a good choice to learn how to ride but I out grew it so fast I wish I would’ve just bought the Indian first.
Hello Tall from eastern NC. I love your videos and appreciate how you share your experiences. I ride my own 17 Street Glide and started out on a 1200 Sportster because I wanted to be sure it would “stick”. My husband and I ride long distances at least once a year. I never dreamed I’d love it as much as I do. Arkansas Pig Trail is my favorite trip so far. Going to Sturgis for the first time this year. Thanks again. Looking forward to your “Riding in the Rain“ video. Keep Gliding!
I agree with everything you said, great advice for people, some people won't agree but that's them, to each their own, last time I rode was in the 70s, got my harley 2 years ago, had to retrain my self over again, im not a young pup now so I got a 93 883 sportster custom, it's all I need perfect for me
Thank you for sharing this Information. I went out and bought a 2016 Street Glide in March 2024 never road a motorcycle before and now I'm intimidate by the bike. I am signed up for the class and hopefully that help with the fear of riding. I very excited about learning.
I too was raised around Harleys as a kid my 1st harley was a softail, then I graduated to a Road Glide CVO man did I make the right choice.✌🏾Tall man that inro music is dope.🔥🔥🔥
Love your family’s Harley history. #afamilyheritage #firstbikeroadking #sonsfirstbikewillbethatroadking #roadglidelimited #betheboss #practiceslowspeed #practicepracticepractice
Yeah he’s right . If you start small you’re going to outgrow that bike faster than you can most likely purchase another. So start off with a bigger bike and grow into it rather than start small and out grow it. I started on a Yamaha 250 v star then jumped to a Yamaha FZ 1 000 cc sport bike then went to a 1500 goldwing aspencade and now I’m currently on a 2022 Harley roadking special 114.
Tall my first bike was a 1100 Honda rebel, and now I have a 2023 Indian Challenger. If you practice, practice, practice on the bike you have, and you feel comfortable why not get what you want.
Just got my first bike nearly 2 weeks ago. I road in the rain and man it was different for sure! Need a full face and a jacket because rain hurts. Also shoes were soak and wet. But I got some ride time in. Somewhat scary but you just have to ride your ride and you'll be fine.
I see you Tall riding on highway 70. Great backroad to take home. You was in my neck of the woods. Next time stop at the Handee Burger, best breakfast around. Great video as usual.
I started out on dirt bikes as a kid then jumped straight onto a street glide in my 30s but I’m a big guy 6ft 4in 350 lbs I’m 42 now and I now ride 25k+ miles a year .
What bars are you rockin Tall ?? I like them bad boys! 👍🏾👍🏾
Great video Tall! I started riding late in life (five years ago). Had the dealer deliver my first bike (2018 Road Glide Special) to my house, since I didn't have all of my gear onhand and knew I wasn't proficient enough to ride the bike home 50 miles. I'm 6'4" and 250lbs....so getting a smaller motorcycle wasn't an option for me. I spent the first month of ownership riding in my neighborhood and in parking lots. Ventured out to backroads in my local area for a couple of more month. Did my first group ride at about 9 months of ownership and never looked back. I ride year round and I've learned alot. I've seen people make dump mistakes while riding....so the more information like this we share...... the more informed the whole community will be.
Share some riding in the rain secrets..
I just bought the first bike I really liked then learned it. It was a cb 650 custom loved it now on a wide glide
Bring on the video about riding in the rain because you never know. I've ridden the Cherohala Skyway in early October and had it snow on me.
In my opinion, there is no such thing as a beginner bike…. there are bikes that you begin on. My first bike was a Honda VTX 1800. I’m 6-4 200 plus. No way i was riding a 400 cc rebel for example. I started off slow, parking lot practice and then slowly got out there. Get what you want, learn the basics, go slow and gradually build your own pace. Ride safe!
Hello Tall... nice video with many great points in it!!! I have to agree with you about all your advice for new riders and even some of us experienced riders too! Good job!!! John...
Thank you for this video, buying my first Harley really soon and I’m along the same time frame as you sport bikes, time off riding and now I have the Harley inch. Going Street glide or a road glide. First trip turn around to Houston from Dallas. Thanks Bro!
Learned on a 300. I’ve always heard dealers mainly saying to get your dream bike. Seemed to me like they were just trying to get the big sell. Needless to say, I still don’t have my Harley yet. Coming soon….. hopefully.
My first bike was a honda trail i learned throttle control but it kept me in town and under 50 mph then i went to a dyna street bob and boy im happy and loving it 😊
I’d be interested in the riding in the rain video.
in 2016 i took the safety course and I have my endorsement,i bought a 2008 suzuki Hayabusa love that bike,2022 i wanted a harley so i tried both of them street glide and road glide i bought the road glide game over.
I started on Royal Enfield Continental GT650 as a beginner and rode it for 2 years getting used too it then realized I needed a cruiser for a more relaxed ride and I’m also a taller rider so I ended up getting a Harley Davidson Electra Glide love that motorcycle I was also overwhelmed with the weight but got used it immediately
Nice video keep up the good work traveling tall
Great video, brother!
One of the things I remember seeing during my years in road racing, was that the best racers / riders I've road with were dirt bike initial riders. They learned riding on a dirt bike.
i went from cbr600 to a 100 to a hayabusa had a honda vt100 or something like that and then years later traded in my hayabusa for my current street glide i honestly didnt know about the smaller harleys but i dont regret going straight to the touring bike i wanted but it def prob helped with prior experience but weight diff is real no matter what you come from i feel
Much appreciated Tall, I’m gonna get the bike I really want!
This is one of the sketchiest roads I've ever seen. Not just the truck backing in like that, but the impatient drivers on the other side, who might try to go around! For real Tall God bless you on your travels!
Great video Tall. Bought my first bike last year. It’s a HD Pan America Special.
I really wanted the CVO RG. Will be trading in the Pan America.
The way that my pockets are set up, I gotta get the bike that I want. It's not so much the bike itself. The problem would be trying to go out and keeping up with experienced riders!
Just subscribed, great info
Wonderful advice.
My background is similar to yours Tall. I had a Honda Spree scooter at 13. Rode that thing all over town(rural). Got a gsxr 750 blue/white color scheme. But I totally agree with you💯. RoadGlide sounds good👍🏿. Looks like that front tire was coming up😲.
Thanks for sharing 🙏
I agree on Honda probably makes the best beginner bike, I used the Nighthawk 750 only it was 40 years ago lol, that bike is awesome light and quick, plus you can pick them up cheap too, great video✌️
Stay off the front brake, ride them gears, transmission and clutch is easier to replace than a leg!
The bike I really want is considered a beginner’s bike. I never thought about motorcycle’s until the LiveWire electric motorcycle which led me Royal Enfield Super Meteor 650 as the best value and look to cruise around my area. I’m not big on traveling, just hitting the beach, downtown Detroit and back and forth to work.
That live wire is perfect for what you want to use it for. Those live wires only have approx a 100 mile battery life before a recharge so traveling touring would not be feasible for that bike but to zip around town hit a club or bar or run errands or go to work that live wire is perfect. I’m not a tourer either so I could use a bike like that . I have a roadking special and it suits my needs fine.
Get an Enduro type bike, 1st bike. Drop it, drag it, slide it. Rinse and repeat until you learn.
I remember when you were soaking wet riding to Canada
My first bike was a 91 GIXXER 750 too.
I enjoyed all of your video Tall
This is what I need to know
I am thinking this might be my first motorcycle
Are a Goldwing
Good advice. I’m not a new rider but will be getting my first HD when I get back from overseas next year, I appreciate all the tips for getting accustomed to the weight of the HD. Keep gliding, thanks for all your videos!
I think I’m going to go ride me some back road today
Buy a smaller bike than a full blown Harley bagger as ur first bike.
Riding a motorcycle like a BOSS at slow speed is a LEARNED SKILL.
Any knucklehead can go straight and fast….and based on my observations that is stretching it.
Why make learning harder than it has to be?
If you can operate a clutch on a motorcycle... get the big one... you can teach yourself. But if you can't operate a clutch on the bike- get a smaller one.
Are those internal Carlinis? Look perfect for the RG
Buy the Motorcycle you want it's not that deep
I started out on a K Z 1000 Ha ha 😂
So lunch it is!!!!
Learn on a 125
💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Hi tall
Aman
Harley heavyweight full tank of Gas heavy.
I did it. The first time I seen a Electra glide I fell in love. The first time I sat on one I nearly dropped it because of the weight and slippy showroom floor. Listen to @willyboader he hits the nail on the head (as we say here in the uk) and practice practice
