Summer tench fishing

  • In this video I show you how to fish for specimen summer gravel pit tench with a simple inline maggot feeder and a deadly effective combi rig and worm kebab.
    I catch some big tench and a massive bream along the way. Watch out for my boy pulling faces when I am not watching!
    I know that many of you will think the combi rig is too complicated but it really is simple to tie with a little practice and the boom section will last many sessions so rarely needs to be remade.

    Another really good watch. What a session!, well done that man!
    Nice to see you’re getting your son hooked at an early age - the sport certainly needs youngsters coming through especially as all rounders rather than the robots who fish “only”for carp.
    Gotta say I’m not a great fan of inline feeders but they have their place as you say. In weed I’m more confident with a little inline lead and a mash bag of casters.
    For hook links, Have you tried Rig Marole hydrolink - it’s brilliant stuff and makes tying combo rigs a doddle.
    All the best and tight lines..

      Thanks.
      I agree and fear that many instant carpers won't have any longevity in the sport. I'm mindful to take him tiddler bashing as well, which he enjoys more.
      I started with inline leads and pva mesh bags to resolve the hook pulls but was catching so many tench I got through the 30 metres of pva I had with me. Had the sport been slower I'd have stuck with the leads.
      I'm not familiar with Hydrolink, I'll check it out 👍

    What a great video. I love tench and really want to get a double. 9lb 6 from Yateley is my PB. Love it that you take your young son and teach him stuff like how to spot male and female tench. He will defo get the bug. Sub’d.

      Good luck with your search. A double is still a fish of a lifetime.
      I may not be able to teach my boy how to strip and rebuild an engine but he will know the minutia of angling and aquatic life!

      Thanks Chris George the coated braid is a very easy to tie rig. In this video I was using a large drennan bolt rig feeder, size 9 quick link swivel and a size 10 Drennan super specialist barbel hook.

      Great video, thoroughly enjoyed it, very informative! I've been struggling since lockdown, so far on about my 12th blank for a tinca, im currently fishing a pond thats covered with blanket weed and also has oxygenating weed mixed in here and there than can come up high off the bottom. I'm struggling though to get any takes, ive been using helicopter rigs and so I think I'll try the inline method more on my next session, im having issues with bait options though, lots of perch taking the maggots and eels taking the worm kebab, what would you use as hookbait on such a water? Im going to try pop up 10mm boilies on ond rod and critically balanced corn on the other. How would you go about baiting a swim for such methods? I usually make a mix of green lipped mussel, bloodworm pellets, castors, corn and maggots but its not proving effective. Thank you

      It sounds like the ideal situation for raking.
      If you’re having trouble with using naturals then sweetcorn would be my first choice alternative. Keep baiting to a minimum. The swim being raked will draw the fish in so fish for 1 bite at a time. Good luck 👍

    Hey sort of an u related question to this video, the grafham deadbait video, Iv really been struggling to catch anything out there on dead’s, was wondering what float set up you were using and weather the baits were on the bottom or not ? Thanks

    • @PaulScowen
      @PaulScowen  4 года назад

      Brook Perrins I used to fish G a lot but have only fished it a couple of times in the last 7 or 8 years as it’s now very popular and I am not a fan of competitive fishing for preds, especially in deep waters like G for zander.
      I had all my best days and biggest zander on lures but don’t discount dead’s once they are permitted and certainly during the middle of the day when lures can be slow.
      The rig was very simply a sliding float set a little over depth. Be careful though as there are mussel beds that will cut you off. However find them as they are often the most productive areas 😉

      Thank you that helps a lot, I live only 5 mins away and am obsessed with zander is bing jt have never been able to catch one out of there 🤦‍♂️And not through not trying, perhaps deadbaits will be the way too go 😂

    Hi regards the tench do you apply alot of bait. Or jst use the feeder for baiting

    • @PaulScowen
      @PaulScowen  3 месяца назад

      It really depends on the situation but if in doubt err on the side of caution.
      I do find that being busy stimulates bites so if just using the feeder to introduce bait then casting regularly can help, assuming there is a decent head of tench in the water you’re fishing.

    • @leahmay1011

      @PaulScowen might be lucky if get 5 a session fish upto 8 9lb possibly. Say 3 spombs to kick start a swim

    • @PaulScowen
      @PaulScowen  3 месяца назад +1

      @@leahmay1011 5 fish to 8/9lb is good fishing in anyone’s book 👍
      There are times when I’m happy putting a decent bed of bait out but this is generally only if I’m planning a campaign and want the fish to clear areas for me or if there is a big head of fish. I should also note that I wouldn’t usually feed very much when fishing the margins.
      I much prefer little and often. As the saying goes you can put more in but you can’t take any out.
      I’ve found that tench are generally pretty tolerant of feeding over them when in numbers. They quickly return to a spot they’ve been feeding on. Topping up a swim will often actually induce a bite.
      The trouble with putting in too much bait is they can literally graze and are no longer feeding by sight. In this mode they are moving around your swim with their mouths on the bottom randomly sucking up bait and are much more likely to encounter and feel your rig or line. When in this grazing mode they rarely tip up and move slowly around the swim sorting out the food from the stones and silt making them much harder to hook.
      In a scenario with less bait they are far more likely to arrive in the swim and drop directly onto your hook bait. It’s why the worm kebab & popped up maggots work so well as they stand out. Tench have good eyesight and will hone in on them like a spring carp on a pink popup.
      The rule of thumb is if you think you’ve been done or should have had a bite add a little more bait and be busy. Unless fishing very low stocked pits recasting feeders every 30-60 minutes when not getting bites will usually make things happen.
