Yet their relationship was still romanticized which was not ok. I also had watched this show for years and the way the writers allowed us to be manipulated into thinking that a romance could developed from a very violent act is crazy. It's difficult to believe that rape was somehow romanticized by a soap opera and this truly wasn't that many years ago. Times have not changed very much when it comes to the way society wants to view rape.
Rape actually causes Post Traumatic Stress Disorder but many don't want to believe that. They want to blame the women in these situations and ask victim blaming questions like, "What was she wearing?" or "Why was she out late at night?"

@@ellencarroll2921 That is your incorrect interpretation. I can and do deny it. By the way, have you ever heard of nuance. Do you understand the meaning of nuance? When you watch the original scene and have watched the many Luke and Laura scenes which followed, a discerning person can see that the story line was not a simple rape story. It was much more complicated and, oh yes, nuanced. The writers made it that way. Over the years since it first aired in 1979, there has been much discussion about that controversial rape story and their subsequent relationship. The post-rape story line was dreamt up because Anthony Geary became so popular with General Hospital watchers, that the powers that be wanted him to stay on the show. It wasn't originally planned that way. He was supposed to only be on for thirteen weeks. Everything that followed the rape was written for ratings and to keep Geary on the show. I guess you're okay with that? Rape/not rape for ratings is okay with you? Laura protecting her rapist from being found by the police is okay with you? You're good with Laura falling in love with her rapist? I wonder, since you seem to only see this as a black or white issue with no gray in between. To this day the story line is somewhat controversial. I mean, just look at the comments in this thread! Most people are actually able to have an interesting discussion about it. You might look into the history of the Luke and Laura relationship instead of attacking me. Projecting your feelings onto me when all I did was express admiration for the scene and the acting is interesting. You do know that we're discussing a soap opera, not real life? Also, look up projection when you look up nuance. Whatever your deal is, it seems you have a need to project your assumptions onto me. Erroneously. I'm done.

I think that's why ABC killed Luke's character off after Tony's. Gary left the show and I think that's why they won't bring back Todd since he raped. Marty on one life to live he don't want. They don't want to have a character like that on their show. That was Luke. Worst thing he ever did. Cannot defend it

It was a way for the writers to explain that what Luke did was heinous and was forgiven the most unforgivable act against another human being. By the time Luke tells Lucky, the real world was very aware of what is now called the #metoo movement and they needed to address that what Luke did was wrong.

I never was a Luke/Laura fan. I always refused to accept the 'rewrite' of the 'seduction of Laura'. It was rape, plain and simple. However, IF that is the way GH was going to spin it, then so be it. I don't think the rape should have been brought up again, and certainly not to the knowledge of Luke and Laura's children. Lucky is a punk. He's always so disrespectful and rude to his parents. Of course, it's Luke and Laura's own fault, because they raised him that way. GH just revisited the rape to get high drama and emotion, and lots of discussion. I am no Luke fan but I think it's unfair for him to have to explain to his children what happened long ago, that was actually spun to be a seduction. Not to mention the absolute trauma the children must have to work through. Luke was hailed Port Charles's Hero, now he's just an old, washed up rapist. I think they should have not revisited the rape.
