The IMPORTANCE of silver dimes

- There’s one thing silver dimes can do that the rest of the denominations can’t do by themselves. You can’t go wrong when purchasing any kind of junk silver but dimes are my personal preference and I’ll discuss why.

I like dimes and in my opinion the Mercury dime is one of the most beautiful coins this country ever minted.
Agreed! For me it’s the merc dime, Walker half dollar and the flowing hair dollar
@@StatesideStash 2009 ultra high relief $20 liberty
Merc, Walk, Standing, and Peace. That whole era.
Love mercs too!!
1000 Mercury Dimes with 250 on the way ...💰
I like 90% Washington quarters pre 1964. I have 3 5 gallon buckets filled and leveled off to the top. Mathematically each bucket has roughly 23,400 quarters in each one. I worked back in the 60'S at a large self serve car wash. The vacuums were loaded with silver dimes in the waste pails of the vacuums. I collected thousands of them and silver mercury and Roosevelt dimes. I worked there for 8 years as manager.
😮 THATS ALOT OF QUARTERS! You’re killing it!
So basically that's a little over 351.000 dollars
@@andynowlin9984 a little off
You should have kept that to yourself...

It's junk silver when I'm buying it. It's constitutional when I'm selling.
My favorite was always half dollars, but now I'll be buying dimes with my coin shop change. Great idea!
Thanks for watching mark! I love half dollars as well! Dimes just add a little bit more perks 😉
Can’t beat dimes & halves! Appreciate the consistent uploads 🍻🫡
Any time brother! Days I don’t upload anything are days I don’t have anything worthy to talk about and don’t wanna waste anyone’s time
ATTENTION. 🚨🚨🚨 I wasn’t paying attention when adding the quarters, half dollar and dimes example. There’s only $1.20 there, I needed to put two more dimes out
Oh well...we all got it .
It actually takes $1.35 that equals a troy ounce of pure silver
@@matthewbyrns-sp8lb $1.40 with junk silver is the recommended number
@StatesideStash War nickles actually can make it exact , if you don't like recommended , and wish to be exact
@@matthewbyrns-sp8lb this is true. I say recommended cause of the wear from constitutional silver.
Years ago, I purchased a dime storage box that has 50 slots for 50 tubes(rolls) of dimes to store my dime stock. I have been buying handfuls at a time each month for years with each pay check. I have just been loading them into the tubes until they were filled. Mission accomplished this week, all tubes full! So I decided I would began to count each tube to make sure there were exactly 50 coins in each roll. Guess what? There were an average of around 53 coins per roll! I asked my local coin shop WTF? He told me he sells them by the coin but buys them by weight because over time these coins lose metal weight from constant wear. So, keep that in mind.
Well done! Yes older coins have wear which lowers the silver content. That’s why if you want the most you need to buy Roosevelts instead
Shouldn’t buy from a dealer that buys by weight but sells by FV, JS
Nice video! Good info. I love Constitutional or "junk" silver! However, my understanding of the term "junk" silver is that it refers to 1964 and earlier US dimes, quarters, and halves that have no extra numismatic value, and only hold their intrinsic value based on their 90 percent silver content. Not because they have 90 percent silver content rather than the .99 percent or higher found in modern silver coins or bullion. It goes back to coin collecting and numismatic valuation.
That is correct. I have been a numismatist for 54 years and your explanation was accurate. The dude who made the video must have pulled his alternate explanation out of his ass because I’ve never heard that from anyone, anywhere, at any time and I’ve been messing around with silver since 1970.
Thank you sir for all these solid videos you are putting out. You have created a great place for content for many different people in this community.

As far as constitutional silver, I have 2 rolls of quarters and 4 rolls of dimes. Only one is mercs though. I really think quarters and dimes are the most practical to deal with.
That’s a solid amount right there. That’s still great to have a tube of mercs!
Great educational vid. My man. I'm gonna save it, send it, and educate!
Appreciate you brother! Hope your week has gone well, always enjoy hearing from you
Some time ago I sold a few things that I no longer needed or wanted and took the cash to my local coin store and just said turn it into real money. I got some random rounds, a half dollar, quarter, and couple dimes. It was actually the beginning of me getting into junk silver. I now have many different tubes and bags of junk silver sitting in my safe. Now when I show up at the coin store with an envelope there they just ask how the yard sale went.
This is amazing. Junk silver is my favorite silver to stack
Yeah, a ONE dime purchase is life changing. Great job!
Thank you!
Dimes rule right under ASE as fractional for personal expenditures. If and when the SHTF they will serve their purpose
Oh I know. Everything will eventually serve a purpose
Bought some ‘64 dimes today 👍🏻👍🏻
Great purchase brother!
My relative owned a candy store in upper NYC. Back in the early 80s he realized that the new clad coinage would be worth much less than the 90% silver so he began putting away anything pre-1965. In the later 80's he gave me a very heavy box as a gift, which turned out to contain....70 rolls of pre 1965 quarters, 49 rolls/ of mercury and roosevelt dimes and 30 rolls of franklin and walking liberty half dollars. I disposed of the halves after checking for numismatic value and traded them in at a coin shop for 4/$50 gold American Eagles, intending to give one to each grandchild upon their college graduation. The first one was gifted last Dec. I still hold all the dimes and quarters in addition to about 300 oz. face value of numismatically valuable coins from well before 1920. they'll all go to my son and daughter, probably before I pass on so they can enjoy them as I have. Sad part, his candy store was broken into back then and 4 cigar boxes filled with indian head pennies were stolen. Based on my estimates each box probably contained at least 2,000 indian heads.......UGH...what they'd be worth today.
That is WILD
Yup..., constitutional dimes are great fractional. As you do, and say, it's always best to price it at all your local LCS's. I've also bought just a few dimes at a time. My favorite constitutional is the dimes. Hands down since I can purchase them in such small dollar amounts. I routinely see purchases of under 30 dimes at a time (just like me) and the shops run out of dimes first. Also, I routinely see only the dimes being purchased (just like me). The mercurys disappear quickly around here.
Similar to my area. Dimes are the first to go followed by half dollars
Big like 413 and subscribed! I totally agree with the strategy of buying even just one dime at a time, because it will definitely add up long term!
Thank you brother!
My grandfather passed away in 1981 and left a safe with no combination. My father busted it open in the early 2000s . There are rolls of merc dimes with silver written on the wrapper. They are roasted but still 90% silver
That’s a cool story! (Not your gramps passing) hope you still have that roll!
My father has it for now. I told him to never sell it without contacting me

I found 2 Rosie silver dimes and a mercury dime and a Canadian silver quarter at a coinstar last month during the beginning of May like 1 week into May
Dude that more than I’ve found my entire life 🤣 I found a quarter in a coin star and nothing since
Gotta love unaware PPL! SCORE!
I found a silver dime once, and a silver quarter once. A couple weeks ago I found $2.60 in change. No silver that time, but that was a lot of change to just leave there! LOL. People cash it in because they need $, then they leave valuable stuff behind. Crazy!
Oh Stateside you talked me into it I’m gonna get me some Mercury Dimes ;)
Yeah I’m sure it took a lot of convincing 🤣
I’ve been working on my constitutional stack over the last few months. Went into the local LCS and cleaned out all their mercs. Came home and went through it and found a 1921 -P in G/VG condition. Probably about a $45 coin! I always pull any decent Barbers I come across as well.
Great find! Congrats! It’s difficult to find a good barber now a days
Nice to finally, see a face that goes with this video. I love your videos. Thank you ❗❣️👌
I appreciate that! Hope to hear more from you!
Interesting. I had never considered dimes before.
I highly recommend looking into them. They are a great addition to any stack and mercury dimes are loved by everyone
I buy all Constitutional denominations, with a focus on Mercs. I'm focusing mainly on the War years (42-45) but have been slowly expanding my range.
Like war nickles? Or constitutional silver in those dates
@@StatesideStash Everything! Including war nickels and steel cents.

Great content Bro! You know afterwards I had to pull out all my “ Constitutional silver”. I don’t even have a full pound of the 90%! Well guess I’m gonna have to go hunting today! lol. Appreciate all the content as always! Be safe have a great weekend $
You too brother! Let me know if you end up buying some!
I recently bought a full tube of uncirculated 1955 D Rosies. I have a tube of old Mercs too. A roll of quarters and halves.
Have a nice stack there!
I love the large pinging sound of the Franklin half dollars and I know it. It makes more sense to have more dimes because it’s easier to convert if needed, so I have to say Roosevelt dimes since they are cheaper than the mercurys and I wouldn’t be against getting Kennedy half dollars if they were cheaper than the Franklin‘s.
Where I’m at walkers, franklins and kennedys are all the same price
I got a Barber halve for the same price 😎
Should buy Rosies. But I'm a sucker for mercs!..
I know Roosevelts got less wear which means more silver but mercs are just so cool!
Same same here! Purposefully focused on constitutional silver...heavy on dimes!
Well done brother!
Mercury dimes are pivotal to my stacking. Great video.
Thanks brother! There just something about them
It took me a while to come around to 90% . While halves are my favorite because of their heft, I have more dimes because of their fractional nature.
They all play a parts and are great to have. Can’t go wrong but I do prefer dimes
Roosevelts over Mercury's because of the less wear and tear. If you come across a good Mercury, though, grab it and seal it!
I always have an eye out looking for those mercs that are still in great condition

@StatesideStash Yeah, that's a good one like the 1922 Lincoln Wheat Penny lol, but tbh, I'm currently hunting coins from S mint. Roll hunting S mints, you're only gonna have luck with nickels at this point. I found 2 Jefferson wartimes while roll hunting today and found a 1962 proof a month ago. Some hidden treasures as far as nickels go still.
@@rm1042 still great finds!
5.5 quarters silver= 1troy oz. melt value. 1 silver quarter = 5.40 melt value. I bought a large soft serve ice cream dish with hot fudge sauce. The ice cream man gladly took 1 silver washington quarter and 1 silver mercury dime for payment.
I love it all, but I do dig those mercs
Right there with you brother
I am a coin collector plus a stacker. Is my favorite silver is pre 64 silver ... all of it (usa)
🇺🇸 what kind of coins are you collecting?
90% dollars always have a higher premium.
stick with halves and dimes.
my personal preference franklin halves, and mercury dimes.
It’s interesting to find out what the price of 1 ounce of junk silver is compared to 1 ounce of a generic round when maybe buying on the weekends when the spot price isn’t volatile and find out the cheapest price of either and then load it up on that. (?)
Recently (for me) junk silver has been the most affordable option in my area
I think people need 1oz gold 1/2 gold 1/4 gold 1/10 gold and silver dimes. That's how you keep your stack as small but as valuable as possible while still being able to buy small or big value items if needed to with PMs
I agree with everything you said accept 1/2 oz gold
"I'm not trying to get you to like and subscribe." You should probably tell your hoodie, cause I think he missed the memo.
🤣that’s what makes it funny!
I've been a big fan of 90%, especially dimes, since I started stacking in 2008. For those concerned with barter, here's something to think about. If a silver dime is just a little more than you need to trade for something, the 35% war nickel may come in handy. It has roughly 1/18 oz. silver versus the dime's 1/14 oz.
Great idea. War nickles or 40% Kennedys would be great for those small to medium range purchases.
Well said Mike. I was going to bring that up. Two years ago, I bought 16,000 war nickels for just over spot. We will have a learning curve to deal with in a barter scenario but the price was right and I was buying for weight.
In the far flung past. People would work for the equivilent of a silver dime for a days wage. Later it was the amount for admission for many things . At one pkint it would buy a gallon of gas. When i was young it would buy a soda with the bottle that had a 2cent return deposit. ...then inflation hit.
I remember my grandpa telling me stories like this and what he could get with a nickle or dime. Times have changed 😢
I don't think we have to have a TEOTWAWKI to go into a local bartering system. For instance, food scarcities or liquor scarcities. I like dimes, but I also like 6 oz bottles of Whiskey, and do buy the plastic, but keep larger glass bottles to pour into bc expect return customers to come in for refills.
Cool Video ! FJB 💕😺😺 Thank you FJB !
Thanks Dennis!
Walkers 1/2 $ & Morgan's $ .

Leave some for the rest of us lol. Nice stack and stacking goals.
US MINT HAS QUARTERS AS TOP DENOMINATION OF ''CURRENCY'' , SO I THINK THERE IS [CRISIS] SAFETY IN QUARTERS...PLUS DIMES OF COURSE.
They are all great!
With 10% of the stack allocated to constitutional silver I have several rolls of dimes. And I think all of them came from the LCS.🤔
That’s a solid % set towards it! Was it you that said you also set 15% aside for numismatics?
Thanks. Give me something to consider Although I would hate to lose a dime worth more than a dollar.

Any time I go to the shop to buy silver, I use what's left over/ wasn't enough to buy a whole ounce to get constitutional.

Agreed, merc dimes are nice to own and great little stackers.14 basically is a oz of silver..stacking since 1980,youd think i d have more 90%,have quite a bit but i think age has toned down my purchase types, still buying 90% but more toners.more gold last 10 years as well.
Hey brother you can’t go wrong with gold!
@@StatesideStash takes up less space.bought quite a few fractional eagles and pre 33 s years ago.fractionals are a good way to buy gold, premiums are brutal now .30 yrsago ...not so bad.love the pre 33,s still though all gold all good and still a decent price.
I cannot go into a coin shop and walk out empty handed. I buy something even if I just walked in to look. A lot of times I would buy the dimes because they were relatively cheap. You do have to be careful if you get really worn dimes because they lose some weight. Since I started doing this I have wound up buying 8 rolls of dimes lol. I generally buy the American Silver Eagles when the premium isn't too high. I have bought some pre 64 Washington quarters. I guess they would be good for barter to make a small purchase or make change.
I have the same problem walking in and leaving empty handed 🤣
Favorite constitutional silver. Washington quarters and '64 Kennedy's/Franklin halves.
My reasoning behind this is if we ever became a bartering system where silver regained its valuable roll. I also believe the cost of goods would go up due to the changes in society say from the 50's 60's time frame. Population has grown and i'm betting less independent food production exist and its gone primarily corporate America.
So if a silver dime bought you a loaf of bread in 1950, I'm betting a Washington quarter or perhaps a Washington and a dime would be the cost of that same loaf of bread in 2024, in theory.
Smart thinking and well said
Mine is mercury dimes!
Great choice!

Junk doesnt refer to the purity it refers more to the condition of the coins being exclusively in terms of Bullion and lack of a numismatic or collectability factor.
I believe it is called junk silver not because it is only 90% silver...it is because it has no numismatic value-just coins valuable because of the silver content.
I’m on a fence about that cause theres numerous key dates still with mercury dimes that puts their value well within being a numismatic
Nice video. I don't buy Constitutional Silver, I just prefer 999 Bullion. Just my preference, having Silver is the main thing. Starting with Dimes is easy, then expand from there, move up to Quarters, Halves, Dollars, or buy Bullion. It's all good!
