What It Was Like Being Homeschooled- And How It Changed My Life

  • Me and my five younger siblings were homeschooled for at least a part of our lives. Now as an adult I reflect on what I loved, what I didn’t, and how it changed my life today.
    I address concerns like socialization and academic gaps. I talk about how my mom homeschooled in the 90s with less resources available than today, how I feel homeschooling developed my character and my worldview, and why I’ve chosen to homeschool my own four kids. #homeeducation #homeschool #homeschoolingmama #homeschooling

    It was beautiful and emotional to hear you speak on how your mom trusted that you would be social when you were ready and held space for you until you were ready. That is so beautiful ❤️

    I went to Public ( also my eldest did as well) and honestly I actually learned to socialize more out of school and homeschooling my own children.. since I am neurodivergent the real world taught me more 😊

    This video is a godsend. My oldest daughter is exactly like you were. I decided to homeschool her and she is still struggling badly with social anxiety even though I involve her in co-ops, etc. I feel like I’ve failed her because she’s so fearful...but your story gives me hope. I just need to be patient and give her more time. (It doesn’t help when your family is expecting you to fail).

      I’m so glad you found this video helpful! It can be so scary to back away and let your child take the lead based on their development… so difficult! But for most children stranger danger and separation anxiety is normal and healthy. Being there to support her in social situations will help her feel comfortable so someday she won’t need you. It may not be the case for all kids, but for most shy children they just need more scaffolding and support longer before they can do it on their own 👍🏼

    Love to hear your story. I don’t have kids yet, but my husband and I have already decided to homeschool. We bought a 31 acre homestead/farm last year. We don’t agree with a lot of the stuff being taught in schools these days. We also want to be part of our kids lives we want to spend time as a family taking care of the animals, gardening, being outside and learning as a family. They have a homestead homeschool science curriculum we want to use. We have the sweetest, most social little homeschooled girls who lived in the house before us. They help give me hope in homeschooling one day! I was a public schooled kid had horrible social skills and social anxiety to the point of me taking a failing grade for a public speaking project. I was too scared to use the bathroom during school was so awkward. It’s definitely better. But I was a weird public school kid lol 😂

    Thank you for sharing your story! I currently homeschool my 3 boys and occasionally I become so nervous that I’m forgetting something and will fail them miserably 😅. After hearing your story I feel a bit better! We do lots (and lots) of reading and free play, and they use the Spectrum books for spelling, vocabulary, math etc. What I love that you shared most is the How to Win Friends book that I immediately put on hold at my library. I’ll read that with them after we finish our current book series.

      As a mom it’s so hard to take on the responsibility of educating your kids! If something goes wrong you have no one to blame but yourself 😰 however, I feel like you can’t go wrong with lots of play, reading, and a good math curriculum 💯 it is nice to hear from families that have been through it and thrived!

    I’m just starting out homeschooling my 6 yr old. It’s rough sometimes when I am not sure if we are doing enough. How old were you when you started or did you ever start formal lessons? How did your mom navigate choosing which way each child best learned? My daughter (any child I suppose) will learn if we “force” them to and so there is where I am conflicted. If I don’t have her do something the whole day will go by without her having practiced reading, writing etc.
    thank you for making a positive video on homeschooling. Seems like so many adults did not enjoy their experience and I don’t want that for my children.

      For some kids formal lessons can be rough! I have one of those kids - no matter how engaging the lessons he still resists. I started formal lessons with him around 6, but after a month it was clearly not working. So I waited a whole year and tried again when he was 7. He still resists occasionally, but it’s so much better than before. Learning became a lot easier with a year of maturation. If she is resisting I’d recommend stepping back from formal lessons and instead doing lots of read aloud books, math in real-life settings, and following her interests. My mom had to do this with a couple of my siblings - wait a year or two before starting formal lessons.

    Just found your channel through this video and it was so fun to hear your experience. I was homeschooled in Utah in the 90s and it was fun to find some who has a similar arc to their educational story. I’d love a video on what you do in your homeschool that was specifically influenced by being homeschooled yourself. Are there things that you saw in yet 90s that made you go, “I’m not doing that with my kids!” Or are there other things that you don’t stress or emphasize because you saw how beneficial they were in the homeschool community in the 90s?

      I love meeting fellow homeschooled adults!! 🙌🏻 there should definitely be a conference for us all someday 😂 a congregation of the “weird and unsocialized.” That’s a great video idea. There was a lot I wanted to include, but forgot! I will definitely make a sequel.

    If your doing a states k12 program then your not really, legally speaking, homeschooling. In our state children enrolled in online programs are not considered homeschoolers and do not have the same requirements as homeschoolers.

    • @simplewondersacademy
      @simplewondersacademy  10 месяцев назад +1

      Hmm, that’s interesting. So you’re saying since I used a state-funded curriculum for 5 years of my life I shouldn’t consider myself homeschooled?

    • @Qetesh777
      @Qetesh777 10 месяцев назад +3

      It would be considered homeschooling but it would not be considered having a home education. If she was home educated in the years previous she would be considered a mix of home education homeschooling and hybrid schooling.

      ^ i enjoyed this video alot but yes it’s considered online schooling because they are still following a curriculum that as the parent you cannot change unlike homeschooling you can modify what and when they learn and how long
