Budda Boom Budda Bloody Bang! I love this guy's arttitude. He's heard all the bullsh*t and the 'no experiance know everything' weekend wrenchers. Keep 'em coming mate. As for the critics, Anthony's entertaining, interesting, and honest. He can say anything he likes as it's all on topic and necessary as far as I'm concerned.

The real issue is the gap between the v8 Landcruiser and the Prado is price and engine power, this is a marketing ploy. Fact is if you want to see this country and you have a family you have to tow. Not everyoner can afford a Landcruiser. If they put a v6 diesel in a Prado they wouldnt sell a Landcruiser

I know this is an older post but do you think you might be able to see any damage to pistons after removal of the injectors, by looking through the hole with a borescope camera? Thanks again for your excellent info and sharing your knowlege.

Has Toyota, or do you know, if Toyota has rectified the piston issue with the 1GD-FTV engine? Believe the injectors are much improved and hope other things as well?

I unfortunately am one of the few with probably a cracked piston have all the signs of it.I have just had a manifold clean and new injectors done and then blew the engine , and am wondering where you recommend fuel testing done in Adelaide . 08 120 kdj

If people use them the way they use Prado & Hilux, they would, but generally vans are just run around delivery cars that don’t tow 3 ton around Australia so generally you don’t hear about issues with those although everything is much the same.

Toyota has officially released document and found the root cause is high ambient temperature in combination of towing at high speed mate.

Hilux 2012 SR5, I just had a tune done, all within safe parameters. Vehicle never tows, never driven hard, never long hauls, only use BP ultimate, inlet manifold clean, catch catch, prefilter, maintained and serviced meticulously, valve clearances just checked and came back perfect etc etc. You say don't stress as the liklihood of a cracked piston is minimal, but your number 1 reason for cracked piston is chip or tune....I'm Sorry... But... I'm stressing.

So using your reasoning then all motors should get cracked pistons as they have the same injectors, the real problem is in how injection event changes due to injector influence, as the injector wears or fails, the injection event becomes problematic in as much as there is uncontrolled combustion event with knock evidence, very similar pressure rise characteristics to old mechanical injection, if you are old enough you will remember injection phases, initial injection- delay period- start of pressure rise - combustion duration- end of injection, then along came common rail with the ability to have multiple injection events per combustion cycle, mercedes were the first to develop up to 10 injection events per combustion cycle, the old mechanical injection pistons were made a lot heavier to combat this but you usually would see broken crankshafts from this detonation event rather than pistons, with common rail you have what's called pilot injection event first that is equivalent to initial injection but the amount is only enough to raise cylinder temperature to aid combustion at next injection events, the next issue that changed was combustion chamber design which makes pistons more susceptible to detonation events along with lighter weight pistons as the pressure stress in combustion chamber is more concentrated and this cumulative effect promotes cracking, the newer injectors are not as sensitive to atomisation changes with age, wear and carbon deposits and enhanced by changed combustion chamber design for same reason, most chips or tunes get pilot event wrong first and then multiply this as the tune changes injection events, quite often they will be knocking at the end of tolerance threshold (on the ragged edge) but then you get poor fuel and or high intake temps which push it over the edge and failure ensues, using ether starting fluid is the short cut to piston and or ring failure as this is causing detonation knock related pressure spikes, this is all relevant to all diesels

Hilux 2012 SR5, I just had a tune done from a reputable service centre, all within safe parameters. Vehicle never tows, never driven hard, never long hauls, only use BP ultimate, inlet manifold clean, catch can, prefilter, maintained and serviced meticulously, valve clearances just checked 120k and came back perfect etc etc. You say don't stress as the liklihood of a cracked piston is minimal, but your number 1 reason for cracked piston is chip or tune....I'm Sorry... But... I'm stressing.

@@Fourby4Diesel obviously like most others I was chasing a little more performance from an ecu remap (which it's done). I definitely don't abuse the fact it has more response etc, I still baby it. After watching plenty of your videos there's only one positive I can see from the ecu remap now for engine longevity and thats the ecu electronically blocking the EGR. I did however have a HPD catch can installed after the inlet clean at 100k, I was disappointed after now reading reports that although build quality for these catch can is amazing their ability to catch oil vapour isn't up there with the best which has now turned into a positive regarding inlet lubrication and abrasive soot haha.
      It's all a learning curve I guess.

@@Fourby4Diesel I work on Nissan patrols here for years and drive them now over 13 years, similar Piston design at least in materials used.I have seen one particular 3.0 patrol going to 500k with pistons like new (After it cracked a head) radiator was blocked. Then I see ones driven whilst overheating, abused (again possibly blocked rad and will only get hot towing) I seen these abused ones to crack pistons fast if not rectified. Also just to say too hairline or age related cracks in the crown I wouldn't worry about if too small. Your cracks are fairly serious looking though. Faulty injectors or bad coolant temp sensor can cause it too or faulty MAF sensor when they overfuel.
