The part where it turns in to 'You have not been paying attention' turns on its head everything that you'd expect from the opening song on a Radiohead album, which usually start with (relatively) quiet, atmosphere-setting songs. But 2+2=5 turns in to one of the most 'rock' songs on the album. In the past they'd have probably saved this for song 2 on the album - this song's really their 'Paranoid Android' of the album. By putting it as the first song makes the album refreshingly structured.

George Orwell wrote it in the book 1984.
His protagonist Winston Smith, uses the phrase to wonder if the State might declare "two plus two equals five" as a fact; he ponders whether, if everybody believes in it, does that make it true?
Essentially if everyone tells a lie often enough then everybody will eventually believe that it's true.

For this last verse, it’s important to note that the narrator is rejecting the notion that he should just sit down and believe everything that he is told.
“I try to sing along but the music’s all wrong” he refuses to admit that the status quo isn’t flawed.
“I swat em like flies but like flies the buggers keep coming back… But I’m not” they keep trying to feed him bullshit and tell him what to think but he refuses to give in to them simply because they’re persistent.

i love the rhythm in this song... i counted the pattern like this...2,2,2,3,2,3 which is 14/8 or it can also be interpreted as a bar of 9/8 followed by a bar of 5/8 but to me it sounds like there emphasizing the beat after 14 beats, then it switches to 4/4.....feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

This song resonates so heavy right now. As a teen, this was never a Radiohead song that I listened to, but years later and as a teacher now, this song moves me differently. I love the literacy reference linked to the song title because it fits the song perfectly. Manipulate public information and narrative, and take away freedom of speech. No, this makes sense. For example, Kid A (the average person) would believe that this is relatively an artistic notion understanding Radiohead, Kid B rather, would talk about the randomness with their songs and how it has no meaning what so ever. I would consider these fans more surface tier and only like Creep. They'll also say that since music itself is nonsense than they would, of course, have random music videos. Most people believe this but, if you look into the audio it has weird feel to it like it's bending. The Bends to this song are almost certainly meaning full and adds to the lyrical compostion itself and almost makes it like a dream. This (in my opinion) makes people seem like there an Amnesiac and less competent Radiohead fans. Makes feel I have to Drill it into there skulls sometimes.

I didn't understand the concept until I finally got around to reading 1984 when I was 13. Before that, it was just a funny song name, but it's really interesting how they referenced this.

I've done it. Seen 'em both live. They're both amazing. No rock band who's come into existence since Radiohead hasn't been influenced by them in 'some' way. They're 2 different generations of Artists who cannot realistically be placed beside one another and judged fairly. They're two different animals. Arguing about who's 'better' is just opinion. So if u simply wanted your opinion stated for the records, I guess "well done" then.
