we’re back for another one of our map/documentary videos. previously we’ve covered bands like radiohead & slowdive. today’s film is on spacemen 3, a psychedelic group from the uk who influenced the shoegaze genre with their effected guitars. the band used percussive tremolo, vox guitars & distortion to great effect. in 1988 my bloody valentine played live supporting spacemen 3 & other shoegazers such as neil halstead have referenced the band as an influence (in the slowdive pitchfork documentary). you’ll enjoy this video if you’re into experimental music & the british music scene. the purpose of pedal partners is to document musical history & encourage cultural growth. you can support us on patreon or by acquiring one of our many clothing designs. we also take visual commissions for our unique visual style & you can catch us playing live with our shoegaze bands violet oscillation & dream pop duo abstract in sound.

I love Spacemen 3, Sonic Boom and Spiritualized. It's beautiful music, very simple and satisfying.
Spacemen 3 are hella hella underrated imo! Love how fuzzed out their sound is, and the vox repeater is my favourite tremolo sound ever, hence why I use the ehx pulsar in the same sorta sound! My partners family are all from Coventry and have ties to the town rugby too so it's rly cool seeing those places name dropped!
that's what we're all about, shining a light on alternative music. all these places are up the road from me, went to uni in northampton for undergrad. defo wanna express uk music culture on the channel & encourage others to get making similar music!

I had the good fortune to be living in Northampton during 84 to 87 and saw Spacemen 3 several times live. Heady daze indeed, memories re-awakened when I listen to the albums. They remain one of my favourites. So, thank you for this lil chunk o info....
went to uni in northampton more recently, great little town with a rich history of music, love bauhaus from there too
Erik Morse's Spacemen 3 book is exceptionally good (just skip the introductory chapter of pomo musings) if you're interested in the band.
As for another MBV connection: Kevin Shields turned up and performed as a special guest for the Spacemen 3 "Reunion of friends" that Sonic organized (basically a reunion of many of the old Spacemen 3 members which Jason did not participate in) a couple of years back.

I wish I found out about them earlier. I listened to Come Down Easy by them and it astonished me how they influenced so many bands. I can really hear how similar The Brian Jonestown massacre is to that sound, at least in some of their albums. I really really like their sound.
i've always been a fan of fuzz & tremolo so love spacemen - oh & i love quirky guitars like the vox!

It’s a shame J Spacemen never got over KR running off with Mad Richard from Verve. The first 2-3 Spiritualized albums are godlike, before they adopted the “one good track per album” format 😢
