Being an adult doesn't have to be a joyless slog of work and taxes. You're allowed to continue enjoying your childhood interests, and playing video games as an adult is a perfectly respectable pastime.
When I was young I thought being an adult was working all day and throwing away all kid things and replacing them with drinking Scotch at night. I became an adult and I work all day and come home to drink Scotch and play video games.
I'd rather be a child in an adult's body and enjoy a good time, than being stuck as a bitter middle-aged person who is too busy talking about their interpretation of politics and gossiping about what the rich and famous people are doing every waking second.

Yeah I remember a video game study was done in a care home with elderly people. The people in the care home were given Nintendo consoles to play with for a certain period of time and some tests were conducted afterwards. If I remember right the results were positive and playing the video games had some positive benefits.
I was told the same thing. I had actually quit playing video games because I saw them as a waste of time. But when I was seriously depressed my doctor recommended playing them. What I've learned is playing a game for an hour or two every few days (sometimes every day) makes me more productive because it helps me not get into really depressed states.
I suffer from PDSD, gaming (and those I've met by gaming) enables me to get through the day. Gaming does have negative aspects, but without gaming I wouldn't be here. Also, just have say, love the Freddie avatar.

This makes me remember, how my parents used to say that "You"ll grow out of playing video games". Now I'm 31 year old and working in the video game industry as a 3D animator. So now I not only play videogames, but I also contributing in making them.
You followed your dreams and I respect you for it. My parents or more specifically my dad told me the same thing, I'm still playing them and I've made friends I otherwise wouldn't have if I gave up on my favorite hobby. I may not have a career yet, but I did take passion for games a bit further and I have created some RUclips videos, mainly some montages that I'm very proud of. It's a start I suppose.

I think this highlights a major problem of society. The idea that maturity is tied to things people enjoy rather than how one carries themselves through interactions with other individuals. Its rather sad that people will openly judge others based on what they enjoy and see them as immature but refuse to look inward to themselves and see the irony of the situation.

I agree with you there. I am in several sub-cultures simply because I find most of the people in them enjoyable to converse with, even when we disagree about something. Because its far easier to become well seasoned and meet lots of different types of people in online games. I have met people from all corners of the globe that have differing views on things and few of them go on the offensive simply because they don't like or understand the things I like. When you focus your life on a small group of people, such as the royal family for instance, you loose site of the diversity in the world around you. Its easy to forget that even if we like the same things, we are individuals, not copy and pasted machines. Just because we like something different doesn't mean we are broken and need repairs, it means we don't want to conform the the beliefs and ideologies of a small group just so we can "fit in". When you're an adult: Oh no no no, you can't play games, that's for kids. When you're a kid: Oh no no no, you can't play games, you have to study for school. I'm over 25 ... pretty sure I can decide for my self what I consider "adult activities worthy of my time" and if that's playing a game, where I get to pet a virtual representation of a horse and then proceed to press the punch button by accident and feel irrational levels of regret for accidentally pretend hitting my non existent horse, then so be it.
This is me... I dreaded living under those ideals. I'm so happy I moved out. Things are so much clearer. I'm realizing how much time my rents wasted doing this. "Grown people" is a subjective term these days. I've seen 50 year old men have about as much maturity as actual toddlers and teens acting mature and taking on responsibilites that come with
There are 70 year olds that still throw temper tantrums because they choose to have their feelings get hurt over listening to actual advice. You can't grow out of it unless you want to.
@@ajitsen6927 Age _can_ = Experience, but it takes effort on your part. You cannot be strictly an observer and learn how to be mature--you must act and then learn from what you've done. Far too many people try to skip the doing things part and think they're "grown up" when they lack a lot of personal interaction with others. Going to work can help but it isn't the standard that defines what and who you are by itself. What demonstrates that you have grown up is how you treat others and how you treat yourself. If you cannot take a joke, if you get upset by the things others do or say when what they do has 0 effect on you or anyone else for that matter, if you go around telling other physically grown people what they should and should not do with their free time... then _you_ are a hypocrite and are demonstrating that you have no idea what being a grown up actually means.

"I'm not so insecure about myself that i have to dunk other people's hobbies just 'cause I lack an understanding of it" It is just a precious quote which resumes many aspects of social media nowadays
and not just social media. That attitude of wanting to micro manage everyone else is found everywhere. And it's not just the last few years either, though it's been getting worse and worse very quickly. I lost a job in 2007 (right at the start of the mortgage crisis), officially "because you're not a good fit in the team" (after nearly 2 years of working quite well in that team, no complaints from anyone and good performance reviews) but I suspect because of my opposition to the insane new dress code which dictated what we, office flunkies who never saw a customer, were supposed to wear down to the styles and colours of our underwear and socks.

I've had people talk to me like that before about video games, and my take-away from the discussion is that they're generally upset that when you play video games; you're not being "productive", you're not being an asset or contributing to society... or you're not benefiting them in some capacity. As a "fully grown adult" I will exercise my prerogative to spend my spare time doing as I see fit, and if they dislike what I'm doing they can proceed to behave like a fully grown adult themselves and mind their own business.
To hell with that “productivity” mindset. I’m already wasting nine hours of my life, five days a week in a place I don’t want to be, doing things I don’t want to do, for a wage I can’t even live on; I refuse to do any kind of work-like activities in my meager free time that isn’t for myself, my family or close friends. If someone who isn’t family or a close friend wants something “productive” out of me from my precious free time, then they are going to have to pay me at least triple the rate I make at work. My free time is a scarce resource and I don’t part with it cheaply.
Literally everything we do is a “waste”. We’re all going to die, so we might as well spend the brief time we have on this earth doing what we like to do. Nothing you enjoy doing is a waste.
B-but if I don't spend all my time in performative suffering, how am I going to impress all of my fake-ass friends and acquaintances?? Everytime I ask people like this "what are you defining as 'grown up'?" I always get similar answers: - "Develop a career" - I have one...no scratch that...I have two! - "Go out and socialize" - I've got plenty of friends and spend a healthy amount of time with other people in general - "Read a book or go appreciate other art forms" - I do all of this whenever I come across something that tickles my fancy - "Start a relationship and family" - I have a spouse and child, one lovely, happy family All of this while playing video games in the free time I have earned. You know what? Here's a novel idea. How about we all agree that we have a limited time on this planet so just let everyone do what they want with that time so long as it doesn't cause harm.
“Go appreciate other forms of art” because gawking at paintings and sitting down at a 2 hr opera is much more fulfilling than sitting down and playing games. His 10 year seen my switch case and for the entire day he talked to me about pokemon, zelda, splatoon, mario odyssey. He followed me around and that day and vocally expressed his excitement to see me after times apart. You could see it in his father's eyes how upset he was that his son was connecting with this strange man he had bullied the last 12 months and I felt extremely uncomfortable about it but since that day he never bullied me about it again . I feel like he felt like I was more connected with his son then he was and in front of other co workers it was a bazaar experience but I think about how I treat people and they're life choices either on hobby or cars or clothes etc etc. Sometumes people get to tunneled on certain things and dont see just how close minded they are untill a huge reality slap hits them square on the jaw.

@Ultra Magnus oh brother... Maybe not every man wants to die a horrible death on a battle field so some greedy politician can get his oil fill? Ever think of that? Maybe what men want is to be seen as people and not soulless tools/pawns devoid of any thoughts or feelings of their own. Maybe men just want to have peace? To just be able to live their lives like anyone else? And I'm unsure where you get the idea that "Vidya gaming = poor life style." That only applies to a small portion who already have mental health problems. Which means if it wasn't video games it'd be another thing. Most gamers are just regular people who enjoy their hobby on their off time like anyone else.
@Ultra Magnus U think if someone is enjoying video games then they can't be strong men!???? lmao, go check Rylea and u would surprised to know that he's in the US air force while enjoying playing games, both things are unrelated to each other
Well, I'm a US Army veteran and a gamer and I have never ridden a scooter. In fact, we used video games in the military for personnel training. Anything from ground combat simulations to flight simulations. Technically these are games, even if they are meant for training purposes. Didn't seem infantile to me.
Hell, a modified version of Doom II was made specifically for the US marine corps for fire team training and in my mind if the military can use a FPS game to help train their men even a little bit on top of the normal training then good on them, not only does it provide a bit of entertainment to the men but it also provides a 100% predictable run each time if nothing in the settings is changed but if they want a unique challenge that can also be done and it won't put them in potential danger that could happen if something similar was done not in a game setting.
I’ve learnt my English from playing video games, listening to journalists on gaming news cause that’s what I’m interested. I wouldn’t say that my English is good now but better than those days in school where I used to fail my english test. YongYea’s English always inspire me and had me keep on following his video.
Consequently, highly Japan-focused franchises like Yakuza (especially given almost every game lacks a dub) is teaching me quite a bit of Japanese culture and phrases. Also, as the other person said, your English is pretty good.
Bro if you didn't mention it I wouldn't have ever known English wasn't your first language. Trust me your English is better than English natives. You're doing great! Keep it up :)
Same as u, I wouldn't even be a doctor rn if it wasn't for video games teaching me proper English where my country teaching system failed to do so, and when u enter a medical college a good English is just the base requirement as there is no time to start learning that when u already have thousands of medical Latin terminology to memorize

Fair...but if all you do is one thing at the detriment of others whether that be financially, psychologically, or both...then it's a problem. Granted we're now delving into mental health issues whereas this article is just straight insults....but none the less it's important to realize that video gaming can be harmful and a negative depending on how they are utilized. The thing that makes video games particularly dangerous to some is the fact that they are 100% legal and unregulated beyond pathetic labels on the box that parents ignore anyway. And this was before the age of microtransactions and gambling simulators under the guise of whatever game they're pretending to be....now the evil has gone all out and it's tragic really.
@@HandleNameIsStupid what you describe is not a problem of games it's a problem with companies unregulated with very little to no law that can check their moves. This isn't exactly new, plenty of companies where the laws are lax push the extent in which they are allowed to siphon money into themselves to the detriment of the public... Which is an entirely separate issue and matter to games.
@@Hipst3rNinja This is it. The deification of adulthood for its own sake is in itself a juvenile mentality. When I was young, all I wanted to do was grow up because I thought being "grown up" and abandoning my childhood likes was "cool". Now that I'm actually grown up I've seen how silly this mentality is and freely enjoy my childhood hobbies and tastes. Growing up is about adding new things to what you already have, not losing things you liked.

I think it's important to feel things, on the road we have to reign them in for professionalism, so I quite like an emotional story in a game because it allows me a outlet of what I have to keep inside at work. I think...the way I play games has changed. I used to be more of an achievement hunter, but I'd say I play games for the social aspect of them. Playing with friends is more important then playing the meta, if that makes sense?
I've always seen belittling others' pasttimes for the sake of "maturity" to be the most childish and embarassing shit, surprised these people haven't been laughed out of existence yet
Yeah, you basically can't waste your free time no matter what hobby you have. It's "free time", you use it to entertain yourself or otherwise get some rest from thinking about all your responsibilities and problems. Some watch sports, some play sports, some watch anime titties go "boing". To each their own.
My guess is, is that they're such shallow individuals with nothing to show for, any semblance of individualism that somebody ELSE has, rustles these shallow peoples'* jimmies due to their lack of.
Yeah like I'll take this kinda shit from a guy who's cut social media and TV and all that out of his life, makes furniture and teaches his kid survivalist skills for fun in his free time - THAT guy can tell me I need to grow up and stop wasting so much free time playing video games. But something tells me that the folks who write articles like this spend plenty of time mindlessly scrolling through their social media and vegging out as they binge whatever the f on a streaming platform - and those people can go f themselves because video games are way more engaging, challenging and meaningful than social media or TV/movies. Screen habits are a vice, no doubt, but as far as screen habits go, video games are the least bad IMO.
@@SquareNoggin But they are the best of "the bad" though. I play mostly sandbox survival/building games (Minecraft, Valheim, etc.) or MMORPGs. First ones works up my creativity and imagination while the second ones help me work on my social skills, organizational skills and leadership (I do lead group content once in a while), teach me focus and concentration (consistently perform my dmg rotation while dealing with any mechanics game or non-careful players throw at me), economics and data analysis (smart ways of earning in-game currency), and some more. Oh, and also basic stuff like eye-hand coordination, reflexes, etc. I've also finally started speaking English (not my native lang) while so far I was only listening to it and writing myself thanks to online games. Meanwhile, watching stuff is a very passive kind of entertainment. I do get something out of it (like learning foreign languages or even just game-related stuff) but it's almost like studying at that point and not the kind of binging netflix or something that's so popular lately. Anyway, I'm back to wasting my time improving myself and making others' day a bit better by succesfully leading them to victory in challenging videogame content.
Gaming is an artist medium and when the product doesn't engage in casino mechanics, there is an immense dimension of enjoyment, perspective and creativity to marvel at. Loving something that brings you joy and inspires your imagination such as gaming isn't evil or wrong.
I just recently played trough the newest content of Genshin Impact, and while this is a casino ridden gacha game, its world and experiences also provided some of the most beatiful gaming moments in my life - ever. The new Inazuma region is just so beatifully designed, it literally brought tears to my eyes at moments. Had to stop to make plenty of beatiful screenshots on the way, it just looks and feels that good. It is a terrible shame for anyone to reject these experiences just because "it is them videogames" is all that I will say.

I feel bad for this lady’s daughter. You know that, as soon as her daughter turns a few years older, her mom is going to scold her for playing video games or trying to enjoy herself.
Yeah, and pack her day with "useful" activities while she slouches on the couch wasting her time watching the fiftiest Diana documentary and reminiscing how it would feel to be important and part of the royal family.
I remember that. 'go outside!' I went outside and my friend broke his arm. I went outside and I broke my clavicle. It is important to get exercise and sunlight, but people like my mother had been raised to be offended by people merely being inside briefly (despite them being inside the entire time).
She reminds me of the parents/grandparents of kids that I used to teach. As soon as they started school no more cartoons. At ten no video games, bikes, and skate board, card games. No socializing with kids, or adults that still do those things. So they can enter a productive life, and work force.
40 years ago, game system were "for kids." But then those kids grew up, and kept making games that appealed to their changing tastes, which also appealed to other people. This feels like an article out of 1985, not 2021.
50 years ago video games were marketed as "family entertainment" meaning adults were meant to play them as much as kids. It was the retail stores who changed the marketing by moving the consoles to the toy section. I have found more meaning in a handful of RPG games than I have in many books, pictures, movies, and even in real life. Plus, they can teach someone good values vs bad values i.e. putting life over materialism or going against the odds to achieve a goal/mission

They dont die miserable they are living miserable, most of those who force their mindset on others are not happy so they want other's to suffer and i will bet they will use a sob story to justify what they do.
As a grown man, I have to say that I despise how the world functions. Subsequently, games allow me, like countless other people, to enjoy the pleasures of escapism. They allow me to forget about this broken world of corporate greed, unstable economies, crumbling politics, etc. Furthermore, they give me back some of that slow pace which no longer seems to be a thing - because everything has to be hectic and excruciatingly exhausting these days. Without games, I would not have nearly as much energy to tackle the day. Also, they taught me many interesting things which are not taught at school, things that served to broaden my mind over the years. In conclusion, games have given me that which other things failed, and are failing, to provide. There is no need for such hostilities, obviously written to stir up some attention. How ironic is it to criticize "grown men" by immaturely complaining about their hobbies like a frustrated child? Not just theirs, but the hobbies of ALL people? Is the author of this article suggesting that grown women do not enjoy games? Bloody hell, what a mess of an article. I think I am done here.
Something I like to add to this, a steamer I watch is a grown man (Late 30s to early 40s) and he plays video games because he is, by definition, disabled: he is unable to hold a job and thus cannot receive a stable income outside of checks from the government. And no income, no savings to spend on normal/outdoor hobbies: his only source of social interaction is through family, he stopped going to the gym at 25 (Age he got in the accident), most of each check he's given every month goes towards bills while everything else he uses for food for the month, he lives in a crappy apartment because that's all he can afford, etc. So streaming video games is his way of socializing outside of family, even if it's online and over people in chat. But that's fine, because it's what helps him keep going. In fact, he admitted that if he didn't have his Twitch channel to share his experience, he would have ended it all years ago. EDIT: Accidentally deleted a small bunch of the comment at the beginning somehow, readded it
I'm 51 and still loving gaming. I was born at the perfect time, 1970, for the start of arcade gaming, and then home gaming. I have said for more than 30 years, adults should play video games as they get older, they keep your mind active and sharp. From playing Minecraft, designing and constructing complicated mechanisms with redstone, to me just finishing Sekiro, and trying to beat the final Valkyrie in God of War (on give me god of war difficulty) and playing Apex Legends every day, I would say my reactions and sharpness are much better than someone younger that doesn't play video games.

The article was obviously designed to appeal to them.
I absolutely love how the so-called "article" clearly specifies "grown men", only mentioning women in the second paragraph - like it's somehow worse for men to play games than women or something sexist.
Men should work full time, spend all their free time fulfilling every wish of their wife/girlfriend and continue that existence until the man is no longer attractive enough to stay with him. On that point a woman should divorce him, take his money, his kids and if she's clever enough also his house. Make sure he has nothing left and then tell everybody what a loser he is for not being able to be a man. That article gave me those vibes a bit. My first exposure to a video game was at 7, _attempting_ to play _Pong_ in 1973, when I didn't know enough about the game to play it right. Methinks the authoress of the article needs some time in a room with Tetris, or perhaps the Style Savvy/Style Boutique/Girls Mode series. One has to wonder if she has played anything older than Pokemon Red/Blue. Unfortunately I doubt she could understand a cartridge based system, let alone anything like older generation computers that used diskettes or tapes. I could recall having times where I'd play some games with my nieces. Sure they like the girly stuff, but they can also diverge into different genres as well. My oldest niece had chances to also play stuff that was before her time. In some cases, I enjoyed watching my niece beat the shit out of me in a game.
Exactly. Well said.
“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

I agree with you there. I am in several sub-cultures simply because I find most of the people in them enjoyable to converse with, even when we disagree about something. When you focus your life on a small group of people, such as the royal family for instance, you loose site of the diversity in the world around you.

I’ve learnt my English from playing video games, listening to journalists on gaming news cause that’s what I’m interested. trust me, what make my English better (still crap and idc) is anything but school.
Same as u, I wouldn't even be a doctor rn if it wasn't for video games teaching me proper English where my country teaching system failed to do so, and when u enter a medical college a good English is just the base requirement as there is no time to start learning that when u already have thousands of medical Latin terminology to memorize

The thing that makes video games particularly dangerous to some is the fact that they are 100% legal and unregulated beyond pathetic labels on the box that parents ignore anyway.
I have found more meaning in a handful of RPG games than I have in many books, pictures, movies, and even in real life. Plus, they can teach someone good values vs bad values i.e. putting life over materialism or going against the odds to achieve a goal/mission
The author of this article is clearly suffering from "not minding their own damn business."

2:00 Legoland applies this logic. Adults aren't allowed in unless accompanied by a minor. Apparently, Legos are exclusively for children now.

The article was written by a tone deaf idiot, likely who doesn't even know what the concept of self reflection is. Are you surprised?
No sense in arguing with the author. Her mind's long gone.

And Thundarr the Barbarian is criminally underrated on the 80s early Saturday morning watchlist. IIRC, it came on at 6:00 or 6:30, and kicked off the day.
One of my favorite moment was me playing MGS3 and my grandpa called down to the basement to stop playing games and come up. I responded “just a second I’m trying to hear what Khrushchev is saying”. The pace of those steps down the stairs was hilarious followed by “what kind of game is that”. I replied “espionage, I’m trying to destabilize the Soviet Union.” He was very much the everything is a Nintendo grandparent before that.
That sounds like just the kind of story I love. Much simpler than the heartfelt tales about a marine stumbling into the final boss of Undertale, yet so relatable. You and your grandpa have my utmost respects
My grandfather also enjoyed watching me play before he passed.
My mother never judged me because gaming and she's a 74 years old woman (a true boomer), it's funny how most of those complains come from mediocre people while the intelligent ones care about how gaming influences their sons lives. I'm from México and most of my English came from videogames and series (I took the mandatory classes, but I beat most of my friends who also took aditional courses). I know I'm not perfect at English, but I can read, listen and express my ideas with relative ease, something my mother noticed many years ago.
Lmao boomers gonna boom
MGS3 is the best game ever.
"when I was a child, I used to read fairy tails in secret. Now as an adult, I read them openly. When I grew up, I left behind childish things, including the fear of childishness"
Fairy tales are awesome. A bit dark, but awesome.
@@lystic9392 true, especially the old “original” versions of European fairy tales that were wild AF and everyone dies and/or got horrible things done to them
@@TheCivildecay My Mom was always reading those ones to me in my Childhood, Fairy Tales of cut off thumbs, a girl who set herself on fire because she was playing with matches and a boy who starved because we wasnt eating his soup. Fantastic.
C. S. Lewis.
it's funny how gaming went from this "wow, you play video games? you fucking nerd!"
to "wanna game later?"
Same with Anime, back in the day it was called cartoons and it was childish, I was legit scared of watching cartoons when i was nearing 18 years old, but then I basically just said "fuck it" and watched more.
Way better than most TV shows anyways.
