For anyone inspired to visit York after this. Use the park and ride rather than drive in and park. Spaces in York are VERY limited and expensive. The Park and Ride buses run every 15mins and are fast and clean.
I stayed in York, couldn't sleep so went for walk very early up to the Minster, Sun was just rising a beautiful summer morning. The streets were still quiet but there was already a choir singing, I sat in the morning Sun and listened while smoking a cigarette. It was lovely.
Love York. I'm from Durham. I'm To think they built these things without machines blows my mind as a builder. If you go back go to the yorvig place. Viking artefacts. Great video. Reminds us not to tske for granted the stuff we get to see every day 🏴🇬🇧
I'm 20 mins from York on a train In never get tired of going to York. I rode across Vietnam on a motorbike from North to South, 3 weeks, 1500 miles, no accommodation booked, pure freedom. On our last stop we met 2 Korean ladies. We kept in touch. A year later bonui flew from Korea to London then got a train to Edinburgh to go to the fringe festival. I suggested she booked a stop off at York with it being on the London to Edinburgh line. I met her in York and I was her tour guide for the day. We had a great time and she wouldn't have been able to see so much of york without a bit of insider knowledge We walked the walls, had fish and chips, went to the shambles, york minster, tea by the river and much more York is amazing, especially at Christmas time Glad you enjoyed it
I love York. You can easy do a week in York. Theres lots of places to visit. The National Railway Museum is there. Free entry, a good way spend a few hours. There is an ice cream boat aswell when its nice down by the river. Plus a well known chippy there in town - "Drake's Fish & Chips". The Shambles also has 2 Harry Potter store in it called "The Potions Cauldron" and "The Shop That Must Not Be Named". Fun stores to visit. In the Shambles is also the aptly named "Shambles Tavern", which is a nice quaint little pub. York also has a history of chocolate/sweet making, Rowntrees (that invented the Kit Kat and Fruit Pastilles etc) and Terry's(that do the chocolate orange)is from there. Theres a store there called "York's Chocolate Story", and they do tours showing the techniques and the history of chocolate making. Worth a visit Theres also "Castle Howard", about 15 miles from the town centre, which isnt a castle, but a BIG fancy state home. I have a video on it "True opulence - A special look at Castle Howard"
I visited years ago in the summer and it was a beautiful warm evening. I sat on a wall waiting for my bf, and there was a choir singing from the church near by, and then all the church bells started ringing. There are many churches in the centre of York and I felt like I was in a Brother Cafael mystery. It was a wonderful feeling, never forgotten it 😊
Chris , how does it make you feel as a serving member of the forces when you see so many war memorials around the country . And did you know there are only 56 thankful villages in England & Wales , these are villages where all the men returned safe from WW1 Great trip and definitely one of my favourite City’s have you looked at Chester yet that’s another fabulous City to visit , if your doing Yorkshire again Harrogate and Haworth are definitely worth a visit . Your wife and daughter will probably be more interested as Haworth is where the Brontë sisters lived and wrote most of their works , I’m sure you can walk to where Wuthering Heights was based on from the town
York Minster is one of those buildings that seems impossible to have been built but was. Maintenance costs must be horrific and you can see the effects of acid rain on the surface. York is a beautiful area and I am pleased that you and your children got to visit. The Shambles are touristy and crowded but that does not detract from the history and original buildings. I suspect that the wall walk is closed in winter because of the danger of slips and falls on the slippery steps and floor.
Vaudevillian, Friend I'm so glad! This video definitely was a joy to put together. We really loved our time in York and Chris and I want to return and explore even more. There is just so much to see and enjoy! It's definitely a city we will not soon forget. Im sure going to university there would have been a wonderful experience. 🤍 Jess & Chris x
I was lucky my now deceased mother lived there for over twenty years so I visited York often. Fantastic city but expensive, i also walked the whole length of the wall surrounding the centre by the big archway and if i remember correctly it was free but this was around five years ago.
I do hope that you were able enter the Cathedral. I am always overawed by the magnificence of the architecture outside and inside, but the outstanding feature inside has to be the the stained glass windows, particularly on a sunny day when the colours are so beautifully highlighted. I'm assuming that you're based in Norfolk so it's quite a treck on a wet winters day. You do put so much thought and effort into your videos. Cheers ! Sheffield South Yorkshire.
On my last visit to York, I took my wife into a pub called the Terrace. Nearly all the seats and tables were occupied, but I looked round a corner and found what i thought was a large room. It was actually a very small room with a mirrored wall. Imagine my embarrassment when I came to a dead stop.
Everyone seems to miss the National Train Museum right next to York station and the Jorvik Viking centre and York Museum. If you get to Leeds DO NOT miss the Royal Armouries.
Grew up in York and remember an incident in the late 60’s. I could not walk through the Shambles due to a coach party of elderly Americans ( Probably WW2 veterans and their wives). I followed behind listening to the tour guide and will never forget one lady turn to her husband and say “ Gee Wilber, it’s so old”. Going to York in February for a few days at the Viking festival
Many day trips to York. Absolutely loved being there. Not sure if you got to the Jorvik Viking centre? I recall when that was still an active archaeological dig and the visitor centre was just in the planning. I still have a an oyster shell from there! Hope you got to see the interior of the Minster, it really is breathtaking. Glad to see the Shambles wasn't too busy for you, but a shame the walls were closed, there are cracking views from up there(though it's quite narrow and only has railings in sections). Those pasties looked yummy!
Great video guys, York looks stunning. I've lived my most of my life in England & York wasn't on my UK bucket list until last year. Lots of great videos like this have highlighted how great it is!
I'm English born and bred, I worked for a well known white goods supplier doing deliveries in York, I used to HATE York, the streets are so tight, tourists everywhere, cars double parked etc etc etc BUT when people looking through fresh eyes are gobsmacked I now realise what a beautiful city York actually is, thank you for making this cynical Englishman come to his senses ✌️
Well done guys, 👏 York gave its name to NewYork but it's still much smaller and cute😅 You can wander around and take your time looking at a time-lapse place in some ways and pretty Cathedral, Walls of the City to walk around and look elevated across the City leading to the Cliffords tower on the mound built by William the Conquer to control York. History is alive there you can feel it. Glad you loved your time in the original Capital of the North. By Normans, Vikings and Plantagenets! Richard lll recently found under a Leicester City Parking space, is said to have loved York too and preferred it to London. His reinturnment in Leicester grave has a York stone plinth top adorned with the Yorkist white rose carved into the stone. Best wishes🎉

Surely Montana is worth a visit, how about mount Dinali ,or the grand canyon, yellowstone or Niagra falls , don't put yourselves down buddy , and not to forget the everglades, even country has its own beauty
A beautiful and informative video. I had no idea about the South Africa memorial. Next time, I can recommend the National Railway museum, if you have time. Thank you so much.
In many ways I love York but I also have a great love for a similar walled city of Chester. The walk on the walls down towards the racecourse is superb .
I agree, but it is important to understand that much of what you see in Chester is a 19th century creation. The half timbered buildings are recreations of the Tudor style. York is most 'authentic' with a mix of architecture as York has evolved over many centuries.
I think it's important to get yourself a momentous of a journey, something you can look at or use and it makes you smile when you remember where you got it and the memories that go with it
Good sturdy boots or shoes are important when visiting York, the cobblestones aren't everywhere, but the streets are old and curb stones wear too, heels are definitely not advised. As you can see in this video, the ground is wet, this makes walking very slippery in places, forego looking good for your visit and be safe in sturdy but comfortable footwear, only you will know, but a fall will let a lot of people know when you least want them to. York is a stunningly beautiful place and one which you can't see in a day, I've lived near York most of my life and I am still finding new old things about the city.
I grew up in York. The video of walking up The Shambles is exactly why I avoided it like the Plague. Hoardes of rubber neckers aimlessly meandering here and there making it impossible to just walk down it. Its been reduced to a medieval theme park. Glad I left.
I was born in York and I'm still there, well escaped! No York resident goes into the City centre, that was a quiet day, it's bloody horrendous usually. Dodge the tourist, dodge the drunks, a saturated mess of an overcrowded (once great) decaying dirty City.
Ohhhh my old home town I miss the north soooo badly : ( how is the city???? It’s been 8 years since I’ve been back. Is it still amazing feel good vibe and feeling to the place ??
I'm hoping this summer to get out and about. Not travelled around since 2019 before the lurgy. Yorkshire is east of my location. I am surprised with the amount of tourists at this time of year. I've noticed over the last few years, More and more Americans are travelling beyond there borders. Its nice
York is great, and the people are very friendly up there, but I would choose Chester or Winchester to visit - if I was a tourist and had a limited amount of time.
Hiya. Well, at least you now know, if you want to walk the wall, you have to go to York when it isn't raining. Hope you got some great footage inside the Minster for your own records. Are you no longer taking weekend breaks, just day trips, before you leave? Any news on that? Stay safe. All the best to you.
If you want to walk on the walls, go to one of the Bars - gateways - much easier access. Don't know if anyone pointed you to that entrance but they weren't helping!
York goes back way beyond the middle ages it was significant in Roman times! I don't think we should rank any ancient place as "the best", they are all amazing and should not be put in competition with each other. Seeing ancient places is not about making judgements about which is best but about far more important thing e.g learning about the past, understanding how people lived, etc.
Pleased that you had a good time in York, but unfortunately, you hardly scratched the surface of this great city. You need at least 2-3 more days. As others have said, do try to get to Chester before you leave. It is another gem. x
I don't thibk I have ever been to York without being able to get on tge city walls. There.ate several places where you can get onto them. Maybe domevrepairs were being done? Next time you go, have a look at the National Railway Museum with its Royal Trains, Mallard locomotive etc. You could easily spend half a day there. And the Jorvik Exhibition for the sights and smells of Viking York as you are carried aroundvthe settlement under ground level. And the Yorkshire Museum. The truth isvthat there are so MANY places in York to visit. Iust have been there 75 times or more, but it is my County Town!
I live in York and apart from shops did you see the chapel of St Margaret Clitherow our very own saint who lived in the Shambles before being put to death for her beliefs by Elizabeth the First , The Shambles is much more than Harry Potter
if you haven't been there since the 1980s then how do these shops survive without custom ? by selling the tat that tourists buy, people complain then buy everything from Amazon
What a shame you were not able to walk the walls! But you can just imagine how much busier with tourists the city is in summer - especially round The Shambles - if it was that busy on a freezing January day? Definitely so much more to see as well, if you ARE able to get back. Like the Railway Museum and the Jorvik Centre. But the Minster HAS to be the stand-out? In every respect! Really enjoyed that - nice one!
Adrian, It was such a bummer. Yes, there is so much to do, and we did as much as we could in cold. We have already planned our next visit. I will add the Museum & the Center to our must-see. We're so thankful you enjoyed the adventure with us. The Minster is definitely a standout! I can even imagine how crazy busy it is. Hope you have had a lovely week so far. 🤍 Jess & Chris x
@DaydreamersBound There are two similar words from the same root: min-ster and min-i-ster. York's great church/cathedral is a Min-ster, the word for a special teaching church. Love your videos and admire your determination to see so much. When, some years ago, I moved to a village near Cambridge, an American family from the nearby military base moved in next door. They were also determined to see as much as possible - which is why they had moved into a village and didn't live on the base. I used to explore the area along with the wife and we had a great time together. She told me that many American families spent their whole time in England never leaving the base because they had no interest in the 'outside world'. We were both amazed at the attitude.
Lived in England 67 years now been to York once which was once too many. Total tourist trap rip off up to and including having to pay £16 to get in a church (York Minster).
As a Yorkshireman I don't want to do York down, it's great, but if you want the best medieval cities in the world you need to go to Belgium, France, Germany, Poland etc. They are astounding
I love York but describing the shambles as the "best preserved medieval street in the world" is massively incorrect. There are pretty much full intact medieval towns and villages all across continental Europe. As lovely as places like York are and many other places in the UK, what survives of medieval Britain are mainly cathedrals, churches, castles (many are ruins), monasteries, (again many in ruins) and the some streets and buildings - the shambles being one of the the best and most famous. Italy on its own makes our medieval remains look very sparse in comparison. Britain is mainly a Victorian and Georgian country so we're going to have to wait a few more centuries before those buildings, streets and towns are looked upon the same way
For anyone inspired to visit York after this. Use the park and ride rather than drive in and park. Spaces in York are VERY limited and expensive. The Park and Ride buses run every 15mins and are fast and clean.
Also the train, the station is right opposite the city walls and so not far to walk to the city center etc.
I stayed in York, couldn't sleep so went for walk very early up to the Minster, Sun was just rising a beautiful summer morning. The streets were still quiet but there was already a choir singing, I sat in the morning Sun and listened while smoking a cigarette. It was lovely.
I used to do the same thing 20 years ago after out the night club and often had a moment listening on a Sunday morning. I my the city so badly

A place close to my heart, my absolute favorite place in the whole world "so far"...thanks for bringing back some lovely memories ❤
Excellent way to start the day, I went to the University of York as a mature student (albeit still in my early 20s) and it’s such a great little city.
Vaudevillian,

People rave about York until they go to Chester no compettition !
Fabulous vid of a fabulous city. If you like Medieval Cities I recommend Tallinn for a short visit as well.
Yorkshire pudding, yum. You should have checked out the national rail museum.

Yup. We did the Train Museum as well as the Toy Museum.

Going to York in February for a few days at the Viking festival
Thank you for another lovely video. York is on my to-do list. But you're cramping as much as you can before you go home to the USA❤
When i hear you say "The wait wasn't to 'shabby' and we then went for tea" I think its not unreasonable to say that you've acclimatised well!! 😂😂

Great video again .I am an hour bus ride from York ..The minster is always a wow ...
25 mins on the train for us love York lovely in the summer or Christmas time

A beautiful and informative video. I had no idea about the South Africa memorial. Next time, I can recommend the National Railway museum, if you have time. Thank you so much.
In many ways I love York but I also have a great love for a similar walled city of Chester. The walk on the walls down towards the racecourse is superb .
I agree, but it is important to understand that much of what you see in Chester is a 19th century creation. The half timbered buildings are recreations of the Tudor style. York is most 'authentic' with a mix of architecture as York has evolved over many centuries.
I think it's important to get yourself a momentous of a journey, something you can look at or use and it makes you smile when you remember where you got it and the memories that go with it
The most magical city on this planet . I would live there if it the property were not so expensive.
When are you visiting Chester?
Walked the Shambles many times. Betty's is expensive but a real must.
Great Vid, imagine the effect on the populace whom lived in tumbledown cottages of buildings like York Minister and the Castles of the 11th century.
Only visited York once for a football match . Will have to properly visit the city again ASAP .
I was a student at York University in 1977/80. There are a number of very historic pubs that you should try to visit.
For anyone visiting the UK York should be on your agenda. I have visited several times, not hard for me as I live on the East Anglia.
Ohhhh my old home town
I miss the north soooo badly : ( how is the city???? It’s been 8 years since I’ve been back. Is it still amazing feel good vibe and feeling to the place ??
I'm going to miss following your yellow jacket !😊
Did you go up the tower I wonder in the Minster? Great views.
I'm hoping this summer to get out and about. Not travelled around since 2019 before the lurgy. Yorkshire is east of my location. I am surprised with the amount of tourists at this time of year. You was close to the ruins of st Mary’s abbey.its in a public park.plus the Yorkshire regiment museum is near Clifford’s tower
How silly closing the wall walk just because it was wet.
Good for you to get around so much.😄 York, is of course from the Viking, Yorvik name.
The walk down fossgate is much overlooked
If you want to walk on the walls, go to one of the Bars - gateways - much easier access. Don't know if anyone pointed you to that entrance but they weren't helping!
Looks like it was simply the case that the wall was closed that day (that was the Bootham Bar stairs that they tried at 15:52). 😕
York goes back way beyond the middle ages it was significant in Roman times!

I’m surprised you didn’t visit the shop called “Saw you coming “ 😂
Fantastic York thanks for sharing your trip 🎉
York is nice but Chester is equally nice you need to explore the west side of the uk more
The Chester wall walk is well worth doing.
I went there years ago - and I walked across the roof of York Minster
I’ve never before seen anyone eating a Yorkshire pudding in the hand.
Right at the beginning of the shambles "don't argue with us ...got a knife". Sure that what I heard
I’m one of the lucky people who live in this beautiful city.
I don't thibk I have ever been to York without being able to get on tge city walls. There.ate several places where you can get onto them. Maybe domevrepairs were being done?

The Shambles was a good shopping street when I was last there in the 80's, it looks bloody awful now. Just tourist tat.
if you haven't been there since the 1980s then how do these shops survive without custom ? by selling the tat that tourists buy, people complain then buy everything from Amazon
The city walls may have been closed to stop people slipping and falling to their deaths because of icy conditions
What a shame you were not able to walk the walls! But you can just imagine how much busier with tourists the city is in summer - especially round The Shambles - if it was that busy on a freezing January day? It was such a bummer.
York or New York. Which is your favorite?
Let's hope York doesn't get ruined by globalism like the other great cities in the UK.
As a Yorkshireman I don't want to do York down, it's great, but if you want the best medieval cities in the world you need to go to Belgium, France, Germany, Poland etc. They are astounding
Really poor town planning back then, building the roads so narrow. Why didn't they consider the arrival of cars?
would absolutely not drive into York, there are a couple of great park and ride schemes
Britain is mainly a Victorian and Georgian country so we're going to have to wait a few more centuries before those buildings, streets and towns are looked upon the same way
I think York is overrated
