@@EricStromquist I have been a chiller technician for Carrier for 12 years now. I work on anything and everything. Controls, Trane, York Carrier, Daikin, Turbo Core, Roof top units, software. I'm still learning as I go, trying to stay as humble as I can in this trade. we know there is always something new to learn.
Fun, fun. I test chillers for a living. hot condenser creates a surge. If my unit surges I back off the vanes which lowers the temp in the condenser. A leak in the chiller that draws in air can create a surge. Or it can be just (in my case) bad test conditions. Watch the evap temp as this can bottom out in a surge. A surge is so loud that it sounds like a train.:)

i might have this kind of problem. thank you for making a great video like this i learned a lot sir.. i Just have a question sir. my question is i have a water chiller with a screw type compressor and a evaporative condeser. im having hard time because the chiller always shutsdown due to high pressure. and when i open my evaporative condenser it has a water rust on the coils. is that the cause of high pressure on the plant? please answer my question sir i really need a peace of.advice.
Tim, I have an ammonia coolant system, where the ammonia leaves the condenser and goes up to the roof, where it is chilled and recycled back. So, how do I determine the proper temperature of the return. Plus, there isn't any leaf strainer which will cause ammonia to lead into the air. Belts are working, fans are working, I keep getting a surge that shutting off my pump, but the engineer in charge says that it's not the water tower. what are your thoughts?

You are wrong if what you say is correct then we can trip the compressor on high discharge pressure before surge occurs but surge occurs not due to high pressure but because of low flow rate in the suction.

Ok here is what I found out: A surge condition that invloves the Evapotartor can be caused by: 1. Low refrigerant from a low charge or a metering device restricition 2. Low Flow which could be caused by water bypassing teh division plate or blocked tubes or air in the water lines or a dirty strainer or Pump/Valve Problem Low load can drop the low side pressure, but teh machine unloads and the high siade pressure also reduces. Hopefully that answers your question. Thanks again for checking our channel out
Glad it was useful! Thanks for checking it out. Quick question, I am trying to figure out how my controls disrtribution business can be more useful to the industry. What is your biggest challenge in business in 2019? What is the best thing a supplier has ever done to earn your loyalty? If you have a second to answer these questions it would be very hellpful. Thnaks.
Apit Golden Elbow ever heard of air cooled powerpax chillers? they suffer from this on any days above around 38 degrees C (very common in australia) they are magnetic bearing as well so they suffer even worse from high pressure differential as it forces the mag bearings out of alignment very slightly but still enough to fault the chiller. nothing you can do to fix it apart from fit the powerpax cooling pads to the condenser. they are effectivley celdek evaporative cooler pads however these will very quickly screw the coils
Juan Zingarello In any mechanical motor-based system, whether it be an A/C, refrigeration system, or your car, there's always locked rotor amperage event for startup. That means the amperage is usually higher on startup so the system can get going.
Sir, I have five centrifugal chiller with 2 compressor. when start chiller its running normal. but when start 2nd compressor then alarm will come for surge and machine will be trip from surge. I mean one compressor running with normal but 2nd compressor having surge. same problem all five chiller.
EXL HVAC Keep you from starting a recently stopped system when you have a hot evaporator. Latent heat in a recently stopped system will often be enough to do this even when the evaporator is cool.
It will stop the chiller instantly to prevent damage / released of Freon. But automatic controllers /sensors will try to keep the Hi-pressure switch from activated.
Appreciate you checking the video out!! Please let me know if there are any subjects you would like us to make videos on in HVAC or Smart Bulding Controls
The way you explain things probably really confuses people new to the industry. I would be pleased to provide an extensive list of incorrect terminology/phrasing used in the video if desired.
Dear Sir I wrote to him to know if you can help me with an operation consultation or to indicate me to whom I write In the YORK centrifugal chiller of 490TR I got a pressure transducer alarm Why does this alarm arise? As someone who has just graduated from a 2 year HVAC/R program a week ago this May, I can tell you what I know from my job offer, classmates' job offers, and what our instructor. Starting off, bare minimum is about $14 an hour, though location will have a big impact on that. Many of my classmates who got hired locally are starting at $14 an hour, with the few guys who made it into the union will be making about $20 an hour but we're in an more low cost part of the Midwest. I'm starting at $25 an hour but I'm willing to relocate to a high demand area where the cost of living is higher, i.e. taking count my income my starting wage is worth about $20 an hour where I currently live but to get the same standard of living in San Francisco I'd need to make $37 an hour. The other issue is experience. After looking up what stationary engineers do, it seems like they do a lot of the more industrial hvac work. In hvac, you can expect somewhat low wages for the first 3-5 years then a significant increase in salary after that and finding work will become much easier, as most jobs tend to require at least 2 years experience and a solid employment record. So stick with it and you'll find a good job eventually.
The way he explains, makes it easy for me to understand the concept ,thank you very much sir👍🏽

Clear and easy approched explanation to amateur chiller sale like me. Thanks a lot!
A very informative and useful video. Thanks a lot for sharing. Can you recommend a textbook for chiller maintenance and repairing?
that's exactly the same drawing of the refrigeration cycle of a chiller that I learned on too. great explanation too.
Thanks Derrick, I appreciate you checking us out! Do you mainly work on chillers or do you get involved in HVAC controls too?

Absolutely fantastic explanation. Thank you so much this is extremely helpful.
WOW...this was a great video.
Excelent video. I have a question about consecuences. Wich of the two tipes of chillers surge is more harmful for the chiller? thank you
Low end surge will hurt the machine the most, research compression ratio, and how it impacts load.
He should cover difference between surge and stall.

Very well explained video. Would severe load changes on the evaporator side cause surge, if not what would the load change impact?
Appreciate you easy to understand
sir, does this surge will occur only in water cooled chiller plant???
yes
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for your information
That's well explained maestro.
Plz write the pressure and temperature of the water when it goes into the condensor and evaporator
Great video
Thanks!!
Would you consider a groaning noise when the load is low a surge....

for water cooled chiller is a challenge time during high humidity . how can we manage the chiller to increase the header temp.

Good day sir, what is the cause of the chiller evaporator drops alarm?
Backward flow only happen in centrifugal compressor I think n not in screw compressor, pls confirm?

Great explanation.
if the primary pump I do not used wheater it can cause surging on the chiller...can u explain to me

Can a low end surge only happen on the evaporator side or can it also happen when you have a low load? If so can you explain how?

Pls decrease ur pressure first , go to washroom then explain us

Why high pressure sw not cut off
awesome vid....i cried. sniff. surge!!!!
Doesn't this happen sometimes on startup too? I know some chillers will surge a bit on startup but then goes away. What can cause that?

when you start a chiller it has a big different in temp /press change, so it will surge . Try loading it up a little slower !

Same thing can happen in a auto ac system if the condenser fan fails right? there is a high pressure valve that can be released
