The character's name is Hanschen, and he's reading a passage from Shakespeare's "Othello". And he doesn't "turn" gay, he just is gay (even in "The Bitch of Living", he says that he has a crush on Bobby Mayler).
They wanted to give the impression that when the characters suddenly come out of nowhere and start singing a song, they're in their own little world and not literally singing. Throwing in the microphones (and Hanschen's mention of a stereo) is an anachronism meant to remind us of that.
To show that they've kind of stepped out of reality to sing a song. So they aren't singing in reality. When they don't use mics (left behind, word of your body, mamma who bore me) it's because they're still in the scene and interacting with others. The mics don't actually work.
I've never seen this show in person, but this has to be the sweetest, funniest, most innocent yet punk runk, interesting and dynamic number (with one of my favorite showtunes) I can think of. This show is so brilliant!!!!
I love this show...was in NY in Fall 2008 and went to this show...afterwards, I realized that the original script is written by a german author :D I travelled the world to learn something about the author of my country^^ Great Show!!!
That's a good question. The reason why the characters in Spring Awakening hold their microphones to their mouth when they perform their numbers is because the "song world" in Spring Awakening are almost like private moments, instead of like in a usual musical where the characters are singing to each other. Even in Melchior and Wendla's numbers together like The Word of Your Body and The Guilty ones, they don't sing to each other, it's all about their feelings and inner thoughts.
It's a really interesting show when you think about it. It's set in the past but they're just teenagers at the end of the day, and have the same feelings as teenagers from the 21st century, so the modern references and the microphones reminds us of that. They could be modern-day teenagers just as easily.
I saw this video when I was like 10 and was so scarred I tried blocking it from my memory. Then, I watched Scott Pilgrim and Youth in Revolt and felt a strange type of hate for the blonde guy and now I know why...
Yeah, only she was a swing/ensemble member. Her name is Krysta. On this specific night she was understudying for the character of Anna. Phoebe Strole originated the role of Anna but she was playing Ilse on this night because Lauren Pritchard who originated Ilsa was away for some reason. Lol I hope what I just said made any sense.
@Lololuce04 The play is originally German. In the German Language, the letter W, when pronounced sounds more like V the W that should clear it up for you!
@ABookwormAndProud In the musical, it's a postcard with a reproduction of Corregio's Jupiter and Io, where Zeus is coming to Io in the form of a fog or smoke. I can't speak for the play since I'm less familiar with it, but that's what he has in this version.
@sourpatch5559 there's a national Spring Awakening tour going on right now - totally different cast (unfortunately) but still amazing! I would probably pee my pants if the OBC for Spring Awakening got back together!
It's probably worth noting that Krysta Rodriguez is understudying Anna here (and Phoebe is on for Ilse and Frances is on for Women in this video in general)
@Rumevyione Oh come on. It's not their fault that if they have never heard of Spring Awakening before Glee. Music and arts programs were being cut across the nation prior to Glee. Broadway isn't exactly the most easy thing to have access to.
@cazia9 I love this play, I realize. I think everyone got that part. I just think that the director did a great job and i love whoever came up with the idea for this scene because it's very creative
I got seats in Baltimore on stage....got an email a couple months ago from Broadway Across America, and had to buy tickets at the box office using their promo code. They were only $25 though, best $25 ever spent!
It's ok. I totally understand you. I don't know whether it's better to use the mics or not. I was just curious about it because it's the first time I see a Broadway show using those mics. I understand it has do with the esthetic of the musical. Thanks.
You probably feel that way because that was the version you saw and are most familiar with. I saw this cast (but w/ Phoebe as Anna) and I prefer the OBC. I will say that, from a recording I heard of the London cast, I loved the way the Brit Thea said, "He's such a radical." And what do you mean there's barely any laughing? My audience was dying with laughter. In this vid, the people are quiet so they can hear Hanschen's lines better. They're still laughing at all the appropriate parts.
@falloutboytohmi Sadly no. It closed on broadway and the tour just ended. But the good news is that they're starting a whole new tour with a whole new cast! Maybe you can see it then!?! I saw this and it was definitely worth it! :)
That's quite possible. I've never read the official Libretto, let alone read Sater's comments on it or anything, so you're probably right. And believe me, I am so glad we could discuss this without erupting into "OMG Ur Wrong! U dont knw anything!!" like some other angry interactions I've seen on RUclips comment spaces. :) We're much more rational and respectful.
@ginohhh uh...i don't know who told you that. they're really using handheld mics to sing. for one, you can hear a distinct difference in sound when they're using the mics.
I think, its up to the play's title is up to the translator's discretion because I've seen "Spring Awakening", "Spring's Awakening", and "Awakening of Spring" in my college library. They're all the same play, but different translators.
@amsomegirl well there's going to be a whole new tour with a new cast pretty soon! And it's more of teen discovery and what makes it funny is that most of us have been through these kind of situations! It has comedy relief here and there to lighten it up a bit but it's a very sad, serious play. But gosh it's so worth seeing! :)
@bubbafluff21 Doxygirl's description is pretty accurate to the reason. I don't know why ginohhh told you they were fake, cause they're not fake. and the band is on stage because it really helps re-enforce the rock setting of the show. i don't know if you've ever been in a rock musical like Rent or something, but having the band on stage is AMAZING, it really gets you into the songs your singing.
@JackieBorelli I'm pretty sure they wear microphone packs, at least on the Tour anyway, for dialogue. I've deduced this mostly because of the Hairspray video on the Totally Trucked channel. :)
@ALovelyLullaby When the woman in the ticket booth told us about it, me and my ex were like "ok, sounds weird but we'll give it a go" So glad we did now.
It's why they call it Broadway. ;\ They're performing in front of a large audience, which calls for the need of the microphones. The Orchestra being on stage, well, I really don't know much abt that.
@WorldsBiggestGleek2 oh i know, i just wish that phoebe was playing anna because I never got to see it live, so I would have liked to see the entire original cast.
are you certain? Becasue I know that in Shakespeare's Othello, Othello enter's Desdemona's chamber and his first words to her are, "Have you prayed tonight, Desdemona?" It seems to me that this is a direct reference.
The character's name is Hanschen, and he's reading a passage from Shakespeare's "Othello". And he doesn't "turn" gay, he just is gay (even in "The Bitch of Living", he says that he has a crush on Bobby Mayler).
I know it is kind of randomly asking but does anybody know of a good site to stream newly released tv shows online ?
They wanted to give the impression that when the characters suddenly come out of nowhere and start singing a song, they're in their own little world and not literally singing. Throwing in the microphones (and Hanschen's mention of a stereo) is an anachronism meant to remind us of that.
haha i just realized that he was reading the killing scene from othello when he was doing that haha. thats hilarious
To show that they've kind of stepped out of reality to sing a song. So they aren't singing in reality. When they don't use mics (left behind, word of your body, mamma who bore me) it's because they're still in the scene and interacting with others. The mics don't actually work.
this isn't consistent with the show. Its actually a flaw in the directing.
I've never seen this show in person, but this has to be the sweetest, funniest, most innocent yet punk runk, interesting and dynamic number (with one of my favorite showtunes) I can think of. This show is so brilliant!!!!
i wouldnt agree on "innocent" lol
@@tvarchiveez Lyric and music wise, it is. In the show with the specific choreo and direction, yeah, not as innocent...
Oh my god, I've nearly forgotten how fantastic this scene is...
I can't even imagine what practicing that musta been like xD
I love this show...was in NY in Fall 2008 and went to this show...afterwards, I realized that the original script is written by a german author :D
I travelled the world to learn something about the author of my country^^
Great Show!!!

Melchy Gabor hes such a radical
I didn't expect that tone transition by Hanschen 😂😂
finally! Someone who shares my passion for Othello!
The lady in this is my favourite "Adult Woman"
she is brilliant
It's so weird to watch this after only watching the deaf west version
Baby Krysta!!!
I love the Hanschen and Melchior and Moritz monologue. In the play. Its amazing
It's a really interesting show when you think about it. this was the best musical i ever been to.
i love spring awakening.
I recently sang this in a musical at my wchool
GOD! i love remy zaken, a girl who is little, cute, and can sing...i am in love!!!
I got to see this on broadway about 2 days after it opened. I was skeptical at first but after the first scene i loved it.
Amazing show!
I saw this video when I was like 10 and was so scarred I tried blocking it from my memory. Then, I watched Scott Pilgrim and Youth in Revolt and felt a strange type of hate for the blonde guy and now I know why...
That's pretty wild
i was watching this and my mom came in and was speechless! haha i LOVE this song!
this is an interesting performance...
my favourite song from the musical. the harmonies kill me every time.

ohh Jonathan B. :)
Saw it in Baltimore saturday too! It was so great!
@Lololuce04
The play is originally German. In the German Language, the letter W, when pronounced sounds more like V the W
that should clear it up for you!
The guy in the middle is hilarious!
i always watch the OBC of spring awakening on my computer, but i saw the tour going on right now a couple nights ago. soooo good!
thank you for that
Thank you!
performing this in college, wish me luck !!
ughhh.... SO AMAZING.
This show runs in norway now. I watched it yesterday. LOVED IT!
I´m from Germany and I must say,I just love the funny way they speak out the german names X3
In HAPPY she likes Moritz
This has to be my FAVORITE part in the musical. It's so funny.
So jealous of Ricky, and I saw it Saturday.
It was so so so amazing.
better than what I expected!
I was left orch, second row back.
=]

he was my favorite part of the whole movie ! :)

Wow what a wonderful preformance and Lea Michele is now on Glee!
I saw this on broadway! It was amazing!
Love this play but SOOOOO incredible awkard!!!
He does get off on Shakespeare. The passage he's reading is poetically erotic.
they actually have mics hidden in their hair and clothes that can't be seen. they use the handhelds sometimes as a deliberate aesthetic choice.
i love seeing lea michele in songs like this
LOVE this song
LOVE this musical!
:D
My favorite song in the musical...
It's probably worth noting that Krysta Rodriguez is understudying Anna here (and Phoebe is on for Ilse and Frances is on for Women in this video in general)

god i want to see this musical so bad!!!
finally a video
I got seats in Baltimore on stage....got an email a couple months ago from Broadway Across America, and had to buy tickets at the box office using their promo code. They were only $25 though, best $25 ever spent!
Yep! It's part of making it more like a pop/rock experience.
Love this musical and this is probably my fave part ;) lol
I'm playing Hanschen in the Oxford premiere in Feb 2011. This scene's going to be fun...
It's ok. I totally understand you. I don't know whether it's better to use the mics or not. I was just curious about it because it's the first time I see a Broadway show using those mics. I understand it has do with the esthetic of the musical. Thanks.
I love this musical !
Does anybody have a full recording of it ?
such an amazing show. saw it with kyle riabko as melchior last night
@9t5Gina2k7 Yes. Lea Michelle was in this. So was Jonathon Groff who plays Jesse on Glee.
hahahahahahaha do it with ur left hand hahahaha
You probably feel that way because that was the version you saw and are most familiar with. I saw this cast (but w/ Phoebe as Anna) and I prefer the OBC. i completely forgot that scene was in this song-
@Glee4EVA1000 He's 'getting in touch with himself'' so to speak
Jonathan B. Wright
they used the mikrophones to show, that the kids from 1891 feel the same like the kids from now. it is the combination between the two centuries.
ha! Love it
@AmyLeerae I think Thea says it here, too, the camera shift just makes it look like Anna said it.
hanschen's scene is much more seductive than frank-n-furter
The beginning is so cute (:
hanschen😂😂😂😂
My son 😂❤
@ginohhh uh...i don't know who told you that. they're really using handheld mics to sing. for one, you can hear a distinct difference in sound when they're using the mics.
Yeah, I was wondering about the Guy from Nick and Norahs too!
@LorenMQ hahaha that happens to me all the time. in social studies i went "theres a moment you know.." and my teacher went "dont continue..." :)
The off broadway performance had them holding microphones! They must have changed it on-broadway though.
no they didn't it's always been them holding microphones
for real!
men...alway the same xD ahahahaha hanschen is soooo hilarious xD

I have to stop singing songs from this musical in school, I'm getting in trouble with the teachers.....
@ALovelyLullaby When the woman in the ticket booth told us about it, me and my ex were like "ok, sounds weird but we'll give it a go" So glad we did now.
It's why they call it Broadway. ;\
They're performing in front of a large audience, which calls for the need of the microphones.

is that Luthario from Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist?
she is also in that other one with morritz, i don't do sadness/spring and summer
did anyone notice that from 4:33 to 4:37 Thea and Martha are doing the exact same dancing, and they are perfectly in sync
LEA! Her name is LEA! Lea Michelle ... and she's BEAUTIFUL
@LorenMQ LMAO!!! I got in trouble too because my ringtone was Totally FUcked
i agree!
@lyndes33
i know, it's supposed to be a play on the term 'junk'...i think we all get it from there :)
@WorldsBiggestGleek2 oh i know, i just wish that phoebe was playing anna because I never got to see it live, so I would have liked to see the entire original cast.
are you certain? Becasue I know that in Shakespeare's Othello, Othello enter's Desdemona's chamber and his first words to her are, "Have you prayed tonight, Desdemona?"

I love the voice of the guy who does Haenschen, its so rough and edgy.
Does anyone know what his name is?
