There's nothing wrong with topical entertainment, but the very PBS styling of these videos make them very rewatchable and great as educational materials for the art and technology that goes into games

    Eh, the stereotypes don’t bother me much. I think, as long as they’re jokes or at least aren’t used in a rude or offensive way, and people don’t actually believe that everyone in the stereotyped country acts like the stereotype.
    I especially love the stereotype that us Brits all speak like old rich people and spend all day drinking tea while playing croquet. It’s not accurate, but I love it.

      People are trained by society to be "uncomfortable" about the differences between cultures rather than accept the fact that it's our differences that are humorous. If everyone just calmed down and stopped being offended by harmless stereotypes, we could all enjoy a good laugh...not at each others expense, but together. It's too bad everyone is so bloody sensitive these days and people take pleasure in feeling like they are being put at a disadvantage.

    In Japan I don't think racial caricatures are as gravely offensive as they are elsewhere. There are many times (in general) where you can spot a ridiculously stereotypical Japanese caricature amongst the others, so I think it's safe to say it's just a matter of differing sensibilities. It just seems to be a part of the Japanese sense of humor to poke fun at the way humans tend to differentiate themselves.

    4:03 Why does Mario appear in a stereotypical way?
    Because it was a Japanese manga style. Until at least the late 2000's, Japanese people frequently had the opportunity to see this stereotypical art style of "Gaizin(外人/がいじん=foreigner)" pictures in children's picture books and even in Osamu Tezuka's manga like Astro Boy.
    Until the spread of smartphones in the late 2010s in Japan, "Gaijin" were a rare sight for Japanese people. So, there was a kind of Japanese manga culture to exaggerate their characteristics in that style.
    ...And even today's Japanese talk about Sushi, Sumo and Samurai when we chatting with foreigners lol.

There is not a single "strong" person on your side, just a throng of anxious, overly emotional, coddled trust fund babies unaware of their own hypocrisy. Everything you say demonstrates how out of touch with reality you are, and this is why your ridiculous idealism is nothing but fantasy best reserved for toddler bedtime stories. Qix was made by the Japanese company Taito and they pronounce it as quicks. However, everyone in the USA says kicks, so you could argue that kicks is correct for the USA. As far as I'm concerned, if the creator says it's quicks, then it's quicks.
    It's like the character Lucina in Smash Brothers. The correct way to pronounce her name is Lukina (like Luke Skywalker) and that's how they say it in Japan. However in the USA, it's Loo see na. Again, just because foreign countries fuck up the name, doesn't somehow override the original pronunciation, so Lukina is correct.

    • @Shuda87
      @Shuda87 9 лет назад +1

      You have a good point, but in the case of Lucina you have to consider that it's an real name with heritage from Europe (More specifically Italy or Germany, I believe). Add in that Fire Emblem is very much based on a European medieval setting, and it's pretty fair to say that the "proper" pronunciation would be something like Lu-chea-na.

    • @Midori_Hoshi

      Shuda87
      ルキナ Is her name in Fire Emblem and Smash Brothers, so that's that. Isn't it nice how Japanese is a phonetic language? We don't need to spend much time trying to figure out how to say stuff. Dedede is another one where the pronunciation varies based on region. I want to be right, so I use the correct pronunciation.
      I play the Japanese versions of games, partly because I like having correct names, etc. But mostly because I love video games and know that Japan has the most good games and the best versions of games.

      The announcer pronounces her name as "Loo SEE na", so it's just as correct as the Japanese version.

      NoeLPZC
      He pronounces her name correctly in the Japanese version. What is the name of the boxer character in Street Fighter? M Bison, right? Just because the American version fucked up the names doesn't make it override their original Japanese names. It's pretty obvious that M Bison is the name of a boxer since the name is very close to Mike Tyson.

    • @NoeLPZC
      @NoeLPZC 9 лет назад

      Inazuma65
      The same names are pronounced differently in different languages - as long as the pronunciations are made by the developers of the game they're "correct", regardless of the developer's location/language. All the English Pokemon names are "correct" despite being very different to the Japanese names.

    "Come on, Nintendo. You are better than this" That was kind of an unwarranted comment, especially when the game in question it's like 20 years old and doesn't reflect Nintendo's current way. Not to mention it wasn't racist and you are making a storm on a glass of water. No, just no. It's not convincing anyone.

    I don't think Nintendo was being racist at all, in the slightest. To me, it's Mario's African cousin, Asian cousin, etc. Or even just Asian version of Mario, African version of Mario, etc.
    Not Mario in blackface or pulling his eyes into a slant while wearing buck teeth. You know, ACTUAL racism.

  • @Antnj81

    oh my god, why would some of the Mario depictions in Qix make you feel uncomfortable?
    seriously... it's just Mario wearing traditional or common garb in each of their respective countries, in the 80's and early 90's, a lot of foreign countries were behind the times a bit which is why they are depicted this way. We should be embracing our culture differences, not pretending that they're negative.
    Depicting every country the same, as if they all were American, would be even worse because that would be like people saying that our differences, even as silly as we may think they are, are inferior or stupid. That mindset should make you feel uncomfortable

      But why would that make him uncomfortable? Mario is a stereotypical white guy Italian plumber. So we can only be stereotypical about white people or western countries? This goes to the whole Simpson's and Apu contoversey where a show built around stereotypes offends a minority group with its stereotypes

  • @silver47official
