My wife was in the hospital today, I had to stop at a Wendy's for the first time this year. While the meal was $5, the taste was really awful. When Dave Thomas died, quality died.
I went to pickup a takeout order from Denny's yesterday and there was literally ZERO cars in the parking lot. I thought they were closed. When I walked in there was ONE person working all by himself and he told me it was super slow. I was shocked. Imagine being the owner of that place! It was $23 for 2 appetizers to go. Sad.
Restaurants are closing due to a mix of low wages, tipping culture, poor service, shrinkflation, and inflation. Low wages and reliance on tipping make it hard to retain staff, resulting in poor service that drives customers away. Shrinkflation and rising prices from inflation further frustrate customers, who feel they're paying more for less. Together, these issues reduce customer satisfaction and repeat business, hurting profitability and leading many restaurants to close.
And they began this downward spiral during lockdowns for most- when it got worse AFTER the writing was on the wall and most of us knew this was coming.
Thank you to our host and guest for this outdoor walk around segment. Tough business the restaurant business. The food costs are out of their control. And, staffing is always an issue-kitchen and dining room servers.

Fast food doesn't taste the same as it did 10 yrs ago. And it tastes like crap compared to what I remember in the 90s. Back in the 90s pocket change would get you a good fast food meal. Moreover, a lot of foreigners from third world filth holes work in the restaurant business, and I simply don't want to risk catching some disease. It's a judgement call. And in my judgment it all boils down to poor quality food, poor quality help and ridiculously high prices.
I live in Southern California, Simi Valley. We had a Fridays here the food was horrible. The service was horrible and that’s why they shut this one down.
I live in a small city right off I-75 that has a restaurant row and all these places are thriving. McDonalds is packed all the time and Chic-Fil-A is always a madhouse. We have 2 McDonalds and the other is always packed too. Funny the unhealthiest fast food joint gets the most business. A friend who use to be in the restaurant business talked about how high the cost of food is to the restaurants and the margin of profit was so thin he got out of the business. Food supply companies are taking all the money off the table and collapsing the restaurant industry. It's like everything else - the corporations are scalping the public for everything we're worth. Uncontrolled profit taking which hearkens back to what Thomas Jefferson said - "If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered." We are there NOW and I don't think this can be reversed. We've never seen this level of technological monopolization before so there's no example in history we can look to for example and guidance. It is like a nightmare. I would say at this point the profiteers have become such rabid mad dogs that the only remedy is to treat them like rabid mad dogs. Their remedy for us is the gulag system.
If you want to get rid of all these evil scalping corporations, just don't spend money at those places and they will soon go out of business. Also, McDonalds is busy because while they outprice some people, other people who may have eaten at more expensive places start eating there more. Simple economics.
interesting take. I still say people dine alone and with their co workers and friends. not sure dating killed the restauratn business but it is something to think about.
Amen - MGTOW has killed restaurants, bars, nightclubs, florists, movie theaters, wedding industry, etc. The feminist movement has created greedy / hateful / entitled / delusional women: men are FED UP with the BS. if you combine that with a horrible economy it’s not surprising that this is the outcome (BTW not a bitter old man, married 27yrs to one of the good ones, only 10-15% get that stamp of approval. I’m glad I don’t have kids and feel very sorry for young men today). In addition to current dating environment there is an aging population (old married couples like us eat at home); 20-30yrs ago we used to eat out a lot (lunches every day) + 3-4 times (mostly dinners) a week. Following 2000 crisis and especially GFC 2008 we started packing lunches and kept cutting back on eating out; now it’s down to 3-4 times a month and usually 2 of those meals are fast food while out running errands (we use mostly BOGO coupons). IMHO we have been upper middle class for last 30yrs with a combined income around $100k in 2000 (= to $250k in 2024). We chose to cut back and save for last 25yrs. It paid off as I was able to retire early @ 62 last year. Young people, Starbucks / Grub Hub Generation can’t seem to grasp the simple math. Best benefit is home prepared meals are 25-50 times much healthier - less fat, sodium, sugar, portion control (caloric intake), and frying.
I use real world indicators to gauge the economy. And times are indeed bad. One of my indicators are local businesses that I frequent. The businesses that are normally busy and now have very few or no customers. That happened to me when I went to get my haircut today. They’re usually always busy and I have to wait a few minutes. There were three people cutting hair just sitting there with nobody in the shop. Until I arrived. I don’t use fancy charts or graphs. I just look at the real world. And we are indeed heading for I think an economic depression.
My brother buys and sells baseball cards (for over 35 years). His business is a great indicator since it is a non essential expenditure. His sales have been down for 2 years. He did great when the gov't was giving away all the stimulus money.

There were price spikes in every business sector as a result of the pandemic causing unbalanced supply/demand. Last time we went Nov 9th... the food was no where near as good, the burgers were undercooked, and the price was 20% more than it was just a year ago. It would have been much better to just go to COSTCO pick up some steaks and grill them. 1/4 the price and way better. I agree with you....prices going up and quality going down. They keep on keepin on with this trend and all of them go out of buisness. At least if it is going to be expensive have great food. You can stomach it if that is the case.

In the mid 70s we could get a burger fries and a coke for 99 cents at MacDonald I remember the commercial touring you get a penny back! It was awesome 😅
Wow and minimum wage was $2.10 per hour so you spent 1/2, just the same as now.

Average wages were 5-6 dollars an hour then for the common worker. So at 20-22 dollars an hour now what should burger fries and drink be?

I went to pickup a takeout order from Denny's yesterday and there was literally ZERO cars in the parking lot. I thought they were closed. When I walked in there was ONE person working all by himself and he told me it was super slow. I was shocked. Imagine being the owner of that place! It was $23 for 2 appetizers to go. Sad.

@@BruceLee-xn3nn that seems to be a different problem. no one wants to pay big bucks for dennys but how does equate to a worker shortage? i am lost.

Man, here in western new york, so many mom and pops furniture stores are shutting down for good! One of these places was operating for over 120 years! Amazon is killing brick and mortars thru out this country!
Who buys furniture at furniture stores? Thrift stores are much cheaper and there are great deals there. I saw a gorgeous love seat that looked brand new for only $45.
Hell I would even say smart people build their own... if you do it will last for 200 years. ❤
My last new vehicle was an '88 Ford Econoline van loaded, that was meant to be sent to a RV dealer and converted to a custom van. It had a plastic seat on the driver's side that I replaced with a captain's chairs on both sides. With trade in, I paid $351 a month for 3 years. It made one of the best service vans I ever had for doing a/c work in.
Many of those restaurants are still on the least expensive side, but people are coming to realize how 'short on money' they really are.
I have been telling people for over a year now that they are actually worth half of what they think they are. It made them mad. And just because something makes you mad doesn't mean its not true. People are broke... companies, and Govt are broke. Way more broke then they realize. When they realize it... markets crash, housing crashes, unemployment spikes, lots of people lose everything. The last price increase at my Mexican restaurant lost me, my three-taco meal and iced tea went from $13.50 to $18.90, with my $7 tip to the waitress, that's over $25.
Uncontrolled profit taking which hearkens back to what Thomas Jefferson said - "If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered."
We are there NOW and I don't think this can be reversed.
We live a block from McDonald's and my granson absolutely loves my homemade burgers and seasoned potato wedges minus the tip.
I think you’re missing a big factor affecting restaurants today- the deplorable state of dating behavior! No dates = no meals served!
interesting take. I still say people dine alone and with their co workers and friends. not sure dating killed the restauratn business but it is something to think about.
Amen -
MGTOW has killed restaurants, bars, nightclubs, florists, movie theaters, wedding industry, etc.

There were price spikes in every business sector as a result of the pandemic causing unbalanced supply/demand.
