This would apply to any instrument.
That moment when you realise you've started to play Sweet Child of Mine 😎
Some great insights Anthony, certainly gives me some more things to incorporate.
I love to improvise. The more I explore, I find different things to think about. At the moment, I mostly think:
- Where am I (intervals and root note)
- Am I moving around or stuck in one spot (there's room for both, but eventually need to move)
- Am I using different techniques (bends, vibrato, slides, legato etc. Don't need them all, but need some).
- Am I sometimes "memorable" (repeating/motifs)
- Am I taking enough "breaths" (don't always need notes)
Thanks for sharing....I can relate my own playing to some of your own. One thing that was a tremendous help to me was understanding the modes and their musical 'flavour'. Those shapes that you learn have a relationship to the modes. So when I am improving things/practicing in my mind I might want to start off with a sort of happy dad rock thing...Mixolydian and then change things up to more natural minor...Aeolian...ect. Btw, which of your Genesis models to you prefer, the 550 of the 565?? - Happy noodling!
Can I be honest? Some of your improv is quite stale. You'll be MUCH better off forgetting about 'shapes' and really, REALLY understanding intervals compared to a root. Tom Quayle teaches this and it is the BEST way to learn and understand the guitar. This way you won't have to remember loads of shapes and arpeggios and hope for the best.
