Its one of my special favourites this game, wish it had more support in the beginning because that might have lead to more DLC at the time. One thing that I think is relevant that you forgot to mention is the amazing sound design in the game. From the sound effects, the music and just how the surround sound works, it really compliments the atmosphere and gameplay style. Thankyou for putting it in the spot light again, really appreciated.
I loved this game. This was one of the first games that I played on my current pc build, which is my first actual gamer PC. Ive had such good memories combining combo strikes and driving the wastelands looking for secrets outside the map.
The skybox, the lighting, the customization, chumbucket, always getting in to the car on the left side just to remember that it's on the other side This game was amazing.
I loved this game. I played and beat it multiple times. The fighting and shooting was on point, the vehicle physics and engine sounds were absolutely amazing (they used a special program to make the engine sounds as real as possible), the dust storm weather effects were top notch (you actually wanted to find cover away from the storms cause they could mess you up). The world felt barren but not empty cause you were always finding places to scavenge for items.
Absolutely needs more recognition, i can't recommend it enough, game looks fantastic, super immersive, i still remember the creepy underground metro part
My wife got me the game for Christmas years ago, and while I didn’t play it right away, when I did I wasn’t expecting such a great game. Getting fuel wasn’t a chore, and once you level up your car, it’s just gets more fun to drive around.
I always loved this game, there was satisfying combat, car combat, a few good progression systems for each combat, dialog with the guy in the back was fun too. It works for me!
Everything about this game is absolute PERFECTION! only thing that felt underwhelming was the final boss fight. Felt a little rushed. But everything else was amazing! This game should've had a NG+ mode too tbh cuz the flamethrowers get good only by the end and by then you have already killed almost all of the map. But that in an NG+ would've been absolutely epic!
Well you could eventually unlock the original Interceptor and the original Mad MAx outfit, and straight up role-play as Max if you wanted to. That's kind of how I did my NG+
How can everything about it can be PERFECTION! if you point out one major flaw?? Anyway, I just thought it was too tedious at times. If that tedium didn't exist, it would be remembered more fondly today.
I have played and beaten this game 3 times and I keep telling my friends it's a great game but they never even give it the time of the day I wish more people gave it a chance
Can confirm, one of my best game purchases on a steam sale for $10. It was SOOO fun! And the game looks crisp af @ 1440p. The story, game play, and sound stage for the game is so satisfying. Edit: Actually you can get scrap to be automatically collected by a scrap crew, but you have to upgrade the base that is in the section of the map you're in first. Before you upgrade to scrap crew, it's all manual, but it's still fun though. Edit2: One of my favorite pastimes is to load up the game, and find scrap locations with history relics to see how the world was before the apocalypse. I found this really cool location that was a 2 or 3 story house fully underground with sand filled up everywhere, furniture destroyed, and having to turn my flashlight on to explore. I legit felt like I was there exploring the world after it turned to shit and that it could be our world like that. The atmosphere in this game is simply unparalleled.
I remember playing this game a couple of years after it released. It was a really great game and my brother used to it play all the time. Mad Max will always have a special place in my heart.
I loved this, I was able to play it straight through without interference as I was in lockdown. Art imitating Life. Not quite the apocalypse 🤣. The cars and upgrades through the game are awesome. As an Aussie it makes me proud to call Australia home. The dialogue is priceless.
Mad Max is GOATED. I played once a year and still so freaking amazing. Is such a wonderful game. Great looking Fun Combat Fun mechanics with cars Good story Great action and set pieces Good voice acting This game is a easy 9/10
Yeah this game is definitely a gem, I really enjoyed it and was hoping for a follow up. The anti hero role, the grim world, the brawling really gave me a fun time.
Crushed this game last month. Great game, no game has engine sounds like this, you can feel it. Update the shooting a bit and the combat a touch and give us a sequel!
This game is an underrated masterpiece. It's a shame the timing of it's launch was so poor that it got dismissed as just a tie in game. It holds up very well even to this day. The reason everything feels so desolate is that you're literally driving on what used to be the bottom of the ocean. You can see this in the caves with all the coral formations and how the rocks are weathered. It's also why there's so many broken ships everywhere. My only complaints are that I wish there was more variety in the boss characters models and the ending seemed a bit rushed.
The combat was so bad ass too the flying arm bar counter was really cool and there’s nothing as satisfying as going into fury mode and suplexing people and it was brutal af some of the counters made me cringe just because how painful they looked combat was really fun too I almost liked it even more than the Arkham combat
Perfectly timed video! I’m playing it for the first time right now and I’m just dying to see how this game could sing with the power of today’s hardware.
I'm a 47-year-old gamer who grew up with the terrifying vibe of Mad Max and the Road Warrior. This game perfectly captures the tension and fear I felt as a 10-year-old watching these movies. It was the first game I ever played on my PS4, in fact, was the reason I purchased it in the first place. I was not disappointed. It is #9 on my all-time favorite games list. Thank you Falcon for highlighting this great game. I even emailed Avalanche and thanked them for a great connection to my favorite movies. They responded and were very cool about it. I hope they do another one at some point.
Apparently in 2022 there was an actress that tweeted out that she was getting photos of herself taken by the studio for the second Mad Max. I haven't heard anything about it since tho. I can only hope🙏🫰
Hehe, the same generation Here, my man, (47) and the same feeling of the original masterpieces Mad Max, and The Road Warrior..✊They got it 100%!👍👍👍I am playing it for the first time finally, in total of at least 100 hours, and I am not even half way through... but already at The Road Warrior ranking., who plays it know what I mean..😉 It is as I'm watching a sequel of the Originals, completely in it, and it never ends ..😁 I love it..for me, it is number 1.🙌 P.S. Since the movies today became a total crap, this one makes up for it 100% ✊
Mad Max is, by far, my favorite open world game. The sheer size of the game is beyond belief! Even when you drive "OFF THE MAP" the world just keeps on going. I love pretty much everything about it. Chum is much needed comic relief. I was surprised to find the rock/paper/scissors Arkham-style hand-to-hand combat. That was a welcome change from the usual "fighting mechanics" of other games. Definitely recommend Mad Max to all of my friends, if they haven't played it yet. Great review, Falcon!
I got it a year or two after it came out on Steam cuz it was 90% off and I couldn't believe what I got for what I spent. I went ham on that game for a few weeks. I don't know if it has a lot of replay value but I would've been happy spending full price for it.
Yep! Whenever I see this game on sale for $5 on Steam or Xbox Marketplace, I just shake my head at the amount of disrespect that it gets. This game had a whopping *ONE* DLC, and it was free! No loot boxes that cost you money, no extra missions or skins that had to be purchased, no Day One patches, etc. The game shipped as a complete game; probably the last game to do that that was not an indie.
I'm so dumbfounded that people still think it's underrated aside from the initial release period. Do you see the comments on this video alone? It's actually overrated at this point.
i recall playing this game for the first time because I got it on sale on steam and was blown away by it. No one seemed to have really been talking about it even. Might have to reinstall it.
All that is said + - the game is basically 3rd point view Rage (game) - it still, to this day, has the best photo mode of any game in terms of camera freedom and distance at which it will still render everything way out. The only open world photo mode out there.
I absolutely was blown away for this game and didn’t understand why it was only $1! It’s so cool that you made this video! The game deserves so much more love.
Such a great video, thanks Falcon we need more videos like this! I had no idea about Mad Max. It's true there's no real struggle in "post apocalyptic" game genre but to hear that there's a real struggle and a deliberate pacing to get what you need instead of raiding military checkpoints for the best loot sounds great to me! I hope to hear about more gems like this one in the near future!
They added the movies to Prime recently and I watched them again and went back to the game a few days ago and was as blown away as I was years ago. Amazing game and your comparison to Red Dead is spot on. It's all in the atmosphere and how even the side quests drive the story.
SO glad you are addressing this. This was without a doubt the most underrated game imo. I had so much fun and never understood why it didn't review better.
This game is fabulous on Series X in 2023. 120 FPS on a C2 OLED is quite an experience. I love every single second of it. Side ramming cars at full speed (in cockpit view) blowing them up while driving through the explosion will never get old. I like to circle the carnage...slowly.... rev the engine, checking out the fire and beautiful smoke plumes, the dead bodies, and car parts scattered along the road.... total immersion.. After cautiously getting out of the car to scavenge the parts, it's time to drive off periodically looking back at the burning wreckage...it just feels so bad ass.... This game is so good, praying for a sequel but happy with this in the meantime. Gonna try to 100% it.
Feels desolate but the brutality makes it so rewarding. Véhicule fights are memorable, you become the bringer of desolation by what feels like the skin of you teeth. And the atmosphere is really reminiscent of mad Max 2, the world feels apocalipted from 500 years and yet max remembers the time before.
Just bought the game. I met some thirsty wretches in the desert, wanted to give them some water. As soon as the first drop touched the guy's lips, two cars (one of them packed with explosives) came outa nowhere and decided to ram into us head on for no reason. The cars ran over the wretches and both exploded, also killing the drivers. I was completely unscathed, surrounded by 5 corpses and 2 blazing wrecks. Whole thing lasted about 3 seconds. That was THE MOST Mad Max thing I have ever seen in my life.
Funny timing with this video.... I haven't played my Xbox one X in like 2-3 years and the first game that brought me back into gaming with it again was Mad Max. Usually I get sucked into a game and get obsessed with it when that happens, and mad max did that for me very much. I'm nearly 100 percent finished with it now after dozens of hours and over a week of only playing this game. I love it so much it's even fun for me to just wander the wasteland and get the remaining scavenge spots after beating the story. Never played a game before with such fun crunchy hand to hand combat, let alone the incredibly well done vehicle combat and just the sound design in general. I regret not playing this game years earlier when I bought it for cheap.
This is my favorite game of my 35 years of gaming. If for no other reason than the atmosphere of this game is all encompassing. I can't play this game without feeling like I've lost all hope. There's no escaping it in the game. There isn't even any reprieve in the home bases. Everything about this games beats you down. Ambiance is dreadful...in a good way. Great production. I also remember being disappointed when the ammo limitation was so strict. I wound up close combating every enemy. Except for the sniper rifle.
I'm just now playing this game for the first time and I'm absolutely in love with it. I really wish they would make a sequel. This really could be the next Arkham level title.
One of the few games over my decades of gaming that made me genuinely bummed when it ended. I wanted it to go on and on and on. Still looks so good, too.
This game is AMAZING. I bought it on sale for $2.99 a couple years ago. Didn’t think much about it because it was so cheap. Started playing it and became obsessed. Such an amazing game. I dropped about 200 hours into it.
This game got me so hooked I just wanted to 100% it. The vehicle combat has got to be the best I've ever played since a twisted metal game and the sandstorms are amazing. Really hope they make a part 2 and put in some flight vehicles.
Great video! This is absolutely one of the best open world games. Saying it's underrated is a total understatement. I'm always thrilled when I hear someone praise this game.
This game has a special place in my heart because when my wife and I first started dating she saw me playing it and thought it was pretty cool. She was a more-than-casual console gamer but I got her hooked on this, DayZ Epoch mod, and ESO (back when it was in beta). We really bonded thru them and every so often we'll load up mad max and play around. It really is a hidden gem.
I just got into this game recently when I saw it for sale for $2 on Steam. I love it, have already played it over 60 hours. Great game, the open world map, customizable character and vehicles is pretty great.
I really liked it. The only thing i wish it had was like 40-100 player servers where people could take over territories, trade resources, raid other groups convoys, and just go into full on brawls on the open sands. Would also make for some great roleplay servers too.
I loved this game! It really didn't get the notice it should have. I still go back to it every couple years or so. One of my all time favorites. It's definitely the atmosphere that gives it such a cool vibe. Sometimes less is more.
I just played this game last year and it's held up beautifully. So much heart went into the game and it was a lot of fun to play with driving, shooting, crafting, collecting, surviving and questing. The language in the game, from the naming of characters, places and quests to the dialogue was brilliant.
Too bad you can't get the Platinum Trophy on Mad Max anymore since the servers closed. It had a small "a synchronous multiplayer feature" where other players Scavenger Camps send you scraps. Other than that this game is AWESOME, Brutal, Visceral, The car battles and the sandstorms are incredible. 😎👍
I am Australian and Falcon you made laugh, thank you. Your aussie accent wasn't perfect but you were honest about it and I found it funny. Mad Max is in my backlog so I haven't played it yet but I can't wait to. Thanks again. Cheers mate!
It wasn't until I put several hundred miles in my car that I realized all the tanker ships that appeared "beached" in a desert in the middle of nowhere set the tone that these deserts were the ocean floors of the old world. Such a good game!
Thank you for the video falcon! I got this game shortly after release. At the time I lived in a really dry area with minimal shrubbery and tons of dust. After playing a bit of Mad Max and then going outside I would see those red insignias at the corners of my eyes lol. I was going through a lot at the time and this game gave me comfort. I'm gonna download it again for the nostalgia.
Purchased this game a while ago on sale and I’ve finally gotten around to playing it. Everything you said is correct. This game is very enjoyable. I enjoy the hard hitting combat, the car crafting/driving, the open world that the developers created, and the atmosphere. This game deserves some more love from players because it’s very good.
I totally agree that this was an underrated game. I think it suffered from a few things ... like you pointed out, there were a ton of great games that overshadowed it. Also, the first few hours of Mad Max are probably the weakest part of the game and I think a lot of people quit before getting further. I am surprised that you didn't really go into details about the convoy battles... In my opinion, these were the absolute best part of the game and also one of the most fun gaming experiences I've had in my 40+ years of gaming.
@@literallyunderrated Yeah, they were the best part of the game in my opinion and it was definitely lack of forethought on the part of the devs to make them not replayable. I would have loved to go back and replay them repeatedly.

Would love more deep dives like this, I always love it when you do them. The AC Syndicate one was aweomse!
The last good ac game
I loved this game. This was one of the first games that I played on my current pc build, which is my first actual gamer PC. Ive had such good memories combining combo strikes and driving the wastelands looking for secrets outside the map.
Yeah it’s a very well optimised game on PC too.
👍🏼 same here.
The skybox, the lighting, the customization, chumbucket, always getting in to the car on the left side just to remember that it's on the other side
This game was amazing.
Thanks for shouting this game out! Definitely deserved more love - there were not enough games featuring satisfying vehicle combat out there!!!
One of my favorite games. REALLY needs a sequel!
Agreed
Yes , pleace !!!
It works for me!
that and the graphics look good and runs well
Everything about this game is absolute PERFECTION! only thing that felt underwhelming was the final boss fight.
I agree my only letdown were the boss fights
How can everything about it can be PERFECTION! if you point out one major flaw?? Anyway, I just thought it was too tedious at times. If that tedium didn't exist, it would be remembered more fondly today.
@@sugreev2001 It is remembered more fondly today. It's been getting a lot of love the last several years. Rightfully so.
I have played and beaten this game 3 times and I keep telling my friends it's a great game but they never even give it the time of the day I wish more people gave it a chance
Same. Really enjoyed this game but people overlook this game. Such a shame!
Thanks for sharing. I loved the immersion too
I remember playing this game a couple of years after it released.
Great looking
Fun Combat
Fun mechanics with cars
Good story
Great action and set pieces
Good voice acting
This game is a easy 9/10
It runs so fucking smooth too
This game still holds up so well… Cool to see you guys bringing attention to it in 2023! Thanks for keeping me entertained on my lunch break 😊
Falcon, gotta say I'm starting to look forward to all your videos! You're the man keep it up.
Perfectly timed video! I’m playing it for the first time right now and I’m just dying to see how this game could sing with the power of today’s hardware.
I literally got a new heavy duty PC like a couple months ago and now trying to replay every game I missed out on PC within the last 10 years or so.
I’d be interested to hear your other top games. This is on my list too.
Apparently in 2022 there was an actress that tweeted out that she was getting photos of herself taken by the studio for the second Mad Max. I haven't heard anything about it since tho. I can only hope🙏🫰
Please could you list your all time Top 10 old gamer. I think I have been playing game for 25yrs now
Hehe, the same generation Here, my man, (47) and the same feeling of the original masterpieces Mad Max, and The Road Warrior..✊They got it 100%!👍👍👍I am playing it for the first time finally, in total of at least 100 hours, and I am not even half way through... but already at The Road Warrior ranking., who plays it know what I mean..😉 It is as I'm watching a sequel of the Originals, completely in it, and it never ends ..😁 I love it..for me, it is number 1.🙌
So many of my gaming friends still don't know about mad max and it's sad. Such an underrated game.
All that is said +
- the game is basically 3rd point view Rage (game)
- it still, to this day, has the best photo mode of any game in terms of camera freedom and distance at which it will still render everything way out.
I’ve played through it four times. I love it.
its worth the money.
This is a MUST for those who had missed out! There’s a little learning curve but damn the game feels great after you figure it out.
I loved every second of this game and it saddens me that it wasn't as popular as it should of been
I love when the sandstorms come in out of nowhere. Such a great addition.
The timing of this is insane I literally just finished replaying this game yesterday. Great video falcon always thought this was so underrated
This game laid the foundation of what it could’ve been had there been a sequel
Just bought the game. I met some thirsty wretches in the desert, wanted to give them some water. As soon as the first drop touched the guy's lips, two cars (one of them packed with explosives) came outa nowhere and decided to ram into us head on for no reason. The cars ran over the wretches and both exploded, also killing the drivers. I was completely unscathed, surrounded by 5 corpses and 2 blazing wrecks. Whole thing lasted about 3 seconds.
That was THE MOST Mad Max thing I have ever seen in my life.
This truly was a hidden gem, I'm glad I got to play it
Agreed. Loved every bit of that game. Started really stark and empty, and just grew and got better and cooler.
I come back to this game every once in a while. Such a good open world experience
When I see the term magnum opus, the first thing comes to my mind is the car from this game.
This would be an awesome series! Underrated games the gameranx team raves over.
Great game, loved it. The edge of the map sandstorm idea was a lot of fun to go try and survive in. Would love to play a sequel.
I'm just now playing this game for the first time and I'm absolutely in love with it. I really wish they would make a sequel. This really could be the next Arkham level title.
I want a sequel to
One of the few games over my decades of gaming that made me genuinely bummed when it ended. I wanted it to go on and on and on. Still looks so good, too.
Such a good game, exploration is actually rewarded and it feels so good when you find something new.
This game is AMAZING. I bought it on sale for $2.99 a couple years ago. Didn’t think much about it because it was so cheap. Started playing it and became obsessed. Such an amazing game. I dropped about 200 hours into it.
Nice
I’ve never played mad max before, but I’ve always wanted too. As a massive fan of fallout and Just post apocalyptic games in general!
Give it a shot, it's a great game. 👍
thing that blew my brain out about this game is the car combat and the max combat like dodging attacking etc.
I finished replaying it last week... still loving it AF...
This game got me so hooked I just wanted to 100% it. The vehicle combat has got to be the best I've ever played since a twisted metal game and the sandstorms are amazing. Really hope they make a part 2 and put in some flight vehicles.
Played and finished this game 3 times. Loved it since it first game out.
Imagine what this game would be with a vibrant mod community at work.
Great video! This is absolutely one of the best open world games. Saying it's underrated is a total understatement. I'm always thrilled when I hear someone praise this game.
Mad Max was awesome, it surely deserves a sequel!
I really loved playing mad Max, and sometimes I find myself coming back to it
I still hate the porcupine faction tough
Mad Max. One of my favorite games
👍🏼
I just got into this game recently when I saw it for sale for $2 on Steam. I love it, have already played it over 60 hours. Great game, the open world map, customizable character and vehicles is pretty great.
yes sir! I just started weeks ago and love it! it was on my backburner of games!
I spent many hours playing this game and I enjoyed every minute. I would definitely recommend.
Totally agreed! Mad max was a great game. It needs a sequel or another stand alone story! It was awesome!
As a pretty casual gamer, this is one of my top favorite games of all time.
👍🏼
I really liked it. The only thing i wish it had was like 40-100 player servers where people could take over territories, trade resources, raid other groups convoys, and just go into full on brawls on the open sands. Would also make for some great roleplay servers too.
The only thing? Haha
I would be thrilled just to have reskinned Top Dogs.
I loved this game! It really didn't get the notice it should have. I still go back to it every couple years or so. One of my all time favorites. It's definitely the atmosphere that gives it such a cool vibe. Sometimes less is more.
Falcon KILLED the intro with this one 🔥 🔥 🔥 great video
Love this game! Perhaps its biggest mistake was being released in the same day of MGS5.
A sequel by the same devs would be sick!
I love this game. I replayed it awhile back and I’ve been wishing we could get a sequel or a remake. I love the mechanics and the story
A true underrated and underappreciated gem of a game.
I played the hell out of this game I loved it. 1 of the best games of 2015
I totally agree that this was an underrated game.
I loved the convoys. That part really felt like the movies. I was just disappointed that once you finish them, they’re gone and don’t reappear
@@literallyunderrated Yeah, they were the best part of the game in my opinion and it was definitely lack of forethought on the part of the devs to make them not replayable. I would have loved to go back and replay them repeatedly.
They really nailed the survival elements, especially the limited ammo. You really had to consider if it was worth wasting a bullet every time you fired your gun. It was a great game.
One of my most favorite games that I had the pleasure to play.
