Exactly, they dont suckle. In whales its actually the mother that has to do the action, they use a special muscle that most mammals have, its used for moving skin. You can see the same muscle in dogs when they shake of water or horses when they twitch to get rid of flies. Whales use this muscle to contract and squeeze out their milk out of their teat (not technically an udder) so that the calf can just drink it from close to their body. They have gigantic percentages of fat (bluewhales up to 40% i believe), which makes the milk have the consistency of toothpaste and helps the calf in putting on all this weight.
Seeing these animals as only God could for a long time. It sure is awesome. To think that were observing some of what he made for his own enjoyment is surreal.
