this explains why i cannot listen to horowtiz or most of the other big names. Only Gulda for me, and more recently discovered Alexander Jocheles. If i wanted perfect tempo, i;d run a midi version.
He did play it with a strict adherence to tempo. Proper phrasing is a skill and art, and I'm glad it was here, but you absolutely can't let "feel" dictate it or you have a mess.
"Thereafter, he played only instrumental music. He started with the romantic composers, but shed them one by one as their emotional outpourings became too oppressive. Sibelius, Tchaikovsky, Berlioz lasted a few weeks, Beethoven rather longer. He finally found peace, as so many others had done, in the abstract architecture of Bach, occasionally ornamented with Mozart. And so Discovery drove on towards Saturn, as often as not ringing with the cool music of the harpsichord, the frozen thoughts of a brain that had been dust for twice a hundred years.” - Arthur C. Clarke. (2001: A Space Odyssey.) ❤ … and of course, exquisite piece, played exquisitely. 😌
Magical quote. So many memorable quotes from those books. I wish I could specifically remember the passage detailing Tsien's sole survivor, Doctor Chang I believe(?) on Europa telling the crew of the Leonov to "take my bones back to China" Haunting stuff.
@@hgrunt100 "He did not know that the Old One was his father, for such a relationship was utterly beyond his understanding, but as he looked at the emaciated body he felt a dim disquiet that was the ancestor of sadness." "Ibid." 😉

Wunderbar!
Well done sir. This piece can almost make one believe that Bach had a deep modern scientific understanding of what constitutes the universe. I feel infinitesimal yet belonging. Beautiful.
Magnificent. You understand Bach very well. The trills, rubato and phrasing were perfect, and the simplicity of the instrument gave the performance a distinct character. Bach would be pleased. Thank you for sharing.
Clavichords have something called “Bebung” where you can bend the pitch of the note by pressing deeper into the keybed. You experience some of it here. Generally they are not too bad to tune; a double fretted on (such as this one) will have the temperament set when it was constructed and voiced; they also have half the number of strings to tune. So overall they are not too difficult when you know what you’re doing
I think maybe because the instruments in the past were not as good and diverse as nowadays, that the writing required so many rules. Those rules are directly related to physics and human perception. That for me explain why it sounds so beautiful on any instrument. Following all the rules and still write beautiful melody is no doubt very tricky. And you play it so good, I imagine that the clavichord doesn't produce much harmony as the piano and each note doesn't fade well into each other, yet you are able to connect all of them, elegantly!
After reading your rambling and largely incoherent comment several times I have come to the conclusion that you have no idea what you are talking about.
@@anynhi I didn't find your comment incoherent, but I guess what the other dude was getting at were some not quite correct things. For example, Stradivaris, violins built during Bach's time, are highly sought after instruments today, costing millions because they're top notch. The rules are what makes the music sound baroque, it's a stylistic choice. There were other genres around during that time. And while the clavichord is a "limited" instrument, in regards to range or sustain when you compare it to a modern piano, it will produce the exact same harmonies as the piano when you play the same notes. It's the timbre that will be different.
@ Thanks for your comment. You remind me about music history classes during my college. Now I remember that it's more about a stylistic choice (though this choice is still highly controlled by religion & the court). Nevertheless, I was referring to the fact that: if you take a piece written in the later period, like end of 19th, Clair de lune for example, and you play it on a harpsichord. Chance is that you find it a bit weird. Like it's not wrong but definitely not exciting. On the other side, if you take Canon in D, and play it on any common instrument, it still keeps the root feeling of the piece. And the only thing that I can find is that the counterpoint system was the main structure of the music in the 15th, 16th or 17th century (modal or tonal). The counterpoint is about the interval and timing, and that's quite science for me. Claude Debussy or John Cage certainly had much more freedom in their writing. Also, you are right about the Stradivarius, but still I think (at least) the violin string of today is much better than what we used in the past. But yeah, I should have mentioned "keyboards" instead of "instruments".
Nota 11!! Marcos Leite, pianist.
I never comment on videos, but feel compelled to after watching this. Beautiful performance and beautiful instrument! I'm a horn player from the US, and Bach is my favorite composer. Have done a fair amount of study in historical performance at Indiana University, and miss it terribly, as I perform pretty much exclusively on the modern valve horn today. Hope you're enjoying your studies! I'm looking forward to watching through your videos today.
Outstanding - a Masterclass in posture (perfect!), performance (tempo, expression) and technique (the movement of your hands is so graceful). Faultless 👏 👏
The Wurlitzer of the 17th century! By the way, am I right in thinking that this instrument and performance would not be tempered? Thus, if this was played exactly the same on the piano, some of the tones would be slightly different?
Cool to hear it on the original instrument
You can play Bach on anything and it will sound good
you're right!
play Bach on 808
Even on a g string
Anything but that (whatever it is).
@@JWP452it’s a clavichord, in fact it was bach’s most favorite instrument of all the keyboards instruments
Excellent. Bach would probably recognise it as truly his. The sound, the tempo, the feeling.
