  • I have been living in an eco village for 7 years. In this video I share with you 4 things that I didn't expected before moving to an Intentional Community. A couple of years ago I went on a journey to find eco villages and sustainable communities and ended up moving to Damanhur Spiritual Eco community, and I realised that there were a lot of myths about living in an intentional community that I wish I had known before my trip. This video is for people who are interested in intentional living, eco villages and are curious about what to expect before visiting or joining an intentional eco community. I highly recommend that you watch this video and do your own research about global eco villages before planning your visit or stay at one.

    Very cool video. I am a 35 year old man who had a little experience of living in a community in my country (Brazil). The main challenge in my opinion can be the daily human coexistence and also to always keep yourself motivated in individual and group activities. It's certainly not for everyone. What caught my attention in the video was the connection with art. I love it, I don't do it myself but I contemplate a lot, mainly painting, sculpture, architecture, specially asian, specifically from the Himalayas, from the South and Southeast of the continent. It would be really cool if one day you could offer retreats on Buddhist Thangka paintings for instance or lectures on Hindu and Buddhist sculptures in materials such as stone, metals, butter. Here's a suggestion. Are you close to alpine mountains? Is it possible to go hiking, trekking in the region? Wildlife observation? I've also been practicing Yoga lately, do you offer retreats on this practice and meditation in general? Thank you for the video

      @@pedromiguel9202 Your right. There are lot of problems in creating a community. But we have been out her now 5 years by ourselves solving so many problems we have now. We are headed to 6th extinction on the planet. 95 percent off species are gone. Recently they have found half of insects on earth are gone. We have 20 years to reverse what we humans has done or most of people will face unimaginable fate. We came out here because we know what is coming. I knew this year will be epic fires and record heat waves. Next year even worse. Water in the west is drying out. I’ve been feeding birds at enormous cost to bring them back. Fighting people from killing the last of elk, Deere and other animals here. If you only know why earth is dying. Diversity of herds of animals kept the earth fertile and green. We have wiped out most of them in the last 100 years. So many younger generation is aware and is loosing hope. So sad…

      Thank you, I'm glad that you find this valuable and inspiring! The question about animals and especially vegetarianism is a question we get a lot from people visiting. I myself am a vegetarian and has been for life, and in the community every person decide for themselves what to eat. The main philosophy however is that it's more important to look at the How and at the What regarding what we eat. So for example we have our own agriculture and also our own meat production, and there the animals are treated with a lot of respect and are recognised as being as valuable as any other living being. The same goes for our plant based food and vegetables, they're also considered living beings to be respected. Another main aspect is that we eat locally produced food connected to the lands on which we live, and eat according to the seasons. You're very welcome to come visit for inspiration :)

    It's not good to think in terms of "wanting to change the world". The world will change of it's own accord. It's fine to think in terms of "setting an example" though. If your group is trying to "change the world" then you have a problem. It's called disappointment.

      @@Underground-Electronic-Music I too want to start an ecovillage but I have a different approach. I want mine to be health oriented and for the people to already be into natural health. This way we are already on the same page in the most important way. HEALTH. Without natural health, you are done. I've also visited communities. When they are not like-minded, it's trouble! Separating their properties won't do anything. That's the same as it already is in the country anyway. The entire purpose of an ecovillage/intentional community is the cooperation accomplished. If the people are not on the same page together, it simply will not work. Too much trouble!

      @@VitalityMassage In England there is the saying called the trajedy of the commons. This is coz there is common land and people would put sheep on it. It is like rented accomodation. Nobody invests into a rental unit other than the landlord if you are lucky. There is huge diversity in the country and the reason there isn't all out war is coz they have seperate properties. If they had to share then there would be real trouble. Being like minded might help but property rights are important to be able to invest into a home. Cooperation might be the intention of some communities but the important question is whether it is your main purpose and whether it is the best way.

    Hello, it's really interesting to hear you speak, I was wondering what are the community stances on legally disabled and very young/elderly people living with you? Is there a support network and a way for them to contribute to the community? What is also the overall stance on minorities, like immigrants from less appreciated countries and LGBT+ people living among you? Do you allow for respectful people of different religions/no faith to live with you? I guess what I'm asking is, are you a diverse, intersectional community?

    • @celastrinarebecka
      @celastrinarebecka  Год назад +2

      Hi Marika, thank you for your comment! These are really relevant questions! I'll try to answer them as well as possible. One of the core values of Damanhur is embracing diversity, I like that because it gives a vision where we can connect through our differences rather than it being something that separates us. So yes we have many exchanges with people from different cultures, indigenous people, people from different belief systems that are very enriching. We also have entire halls in our Temples dedicated to the celebration of the diversity of humanity. Practically, we have people with different sexual orientation living in the community and we also have people (very few though) that are disabled. However, we're still working on making the community more practically available for for example disabled people and there's a lot to improve there. With young people and elderly we have solidarity fonds covering these age groups, maternity and people with economical difficulties, we have a school up to 14 year old and we are currently discussing the various opportunities to care for the elderly. In this moment our elders live with us in the community homes. This is beautiful because of the exchange but at a certain point it becomes challenging for both parts. We are projecting a house for elderly in need of constant care in one of our central spaces so that they're still close and part of the community, but have the care they need.

    • @celastrinarebecka
      @celastrinarebecka  Год назад

      On the question if we are a intersectional community, I think that we aren't enough in this moment, due to various reasons. One is for sure that people interested in coming to live in the community are often people from western countries, and there are many reasons for this. However there are of course cultural shocks even only in this scenario, but our ideal is that more and more communities can be created around the world where the diversity of each can be shared and we can learn and grow together

      Hello! To enter there's no cost but one needs to stay a little to see if they really want to be a part of the community, it's a period of what is called trial citizenship.
