    Your combined game pet peeves is my ultimate pet peeve - every time I’ve played against a stranger there’s been some form of rule bending / ignorance / cheating that leads to brutal feel bad moments where I’m just wondering why I even wasted my time.
    I have a buddy that plays Necrons so I’m pretty familiar with them, and played against a guy who was using them and was doing so much illegal shit and it was just like .... dude you’re literally trying to play off of my ignorance of your army to win.
    I think because people invest so much into this hobby they don’t care about the integrity of just having a good time and playing the game honestly but only care about winning at any cost. That’s my ultimate pet peeve I guess; just enjoy your time playing the game, enjoy those epic moments whether you win or lose there’s some cool shit going down - don’t fuck that by being obsessed with winning even if you have to ruin the rest of the experience.
    No one is surprised when someone cheats, it’s like... dude we know your army isn’t that strong. 😂

And my other pet peeve is when people complain about how your army is too powerful at the moment, I have been playing dark eldar since 7th edition and my friends who started at the tail end of 8th start of 9th and I can’t tell how many times I have told me that I only play drukhari because they are strong at the moment despite playing them for years before.

      But I feel like that should be our responsibility as opponents to know about these potential "gotcha" moments. I know that it is hard to know about every army, but I try to look at it from a real world perspective. You don't expect opposing armies in war to go "hey, if you attack here, my armour companies are close by to counter attack." You know do your own recon before hand. Look at codex reviews and battle reports on armies that you may expect to show up.

    • @nnurk
      @nnurk 3 года назад

      I agree with battle dolls, to a certain point you should try to be familiar with what armies are capable of, and so long as you know strategems exist for one faction you can ask your opponent if they have a similar ability or strategem. It helps to play with intent, having an open dialogue with your opponent. "I'm trying to place these models within terrain/im moving these infantry to take this objective/i want to deepstrike this unit here, it would be outside 9" of your models but do you have any abilities that let you attack or disrupt them on my turn?" No one wants to be gotcha'd, so have good faith and play WITH your opponent and not against.

Like how inceptors from the Know No Fear boxset are just the bolter ones and don't come with the plasma option. Intercessors not having melee weapons like chainsword, powers sword, or fist for the sergeant for certain boxes. Or even meta stuff like me wanting to outfit all my terminators with chain fists but the box doesn't come with 5 of them. It forces me to either buy more boxes or just go bit hunting on eBay. Hey guys, love the content and glad you're hosting Hobby Talk, I too would like to talk some hobby. Following the format I'll give a game and hobby pet peeve.
    Game: When veteran players intentionally bring hyper lists to casual games with new players, and then get super sweaty during the match. I feel this leaves a poor impression of what the game can be and reflects poorly on the local community. We have a few guys who do this a lot at my local club. Several people I got inspired to play and paint very quickly quit because of these individuals.
    Hobby: Globby paint jobs with minimal effort. Now this isn't always a direct criticism of the painter. We are all of different skill levels and I appreciate everyone's attempts to slay the gray. I had a friend who was notorious for bringing various armies coated in pink Krylon spray paint. He didn't care about the models and would cover up so much detail. It always looked terrible and ruined my reason for coming to a table. The aesthetic of the universe and casual fun time with friends. (He was also a cheaty gotcha player, we are no longer friends).

      Using third party models shouldn't be that bad, so long as it's obvious what they're supposed to represent. It can even be a treat, to see what another player did with the concept.
      But painting seems less optional. Like, its a tournament. Even if it's casual, you couldn't spray the models with a rattle can or three? An army of models with a base spray and a zenithal highlight, and then a third color randomly sponged over them, is at least more visually interesting than gray.

    • @nnurk
      @nnurk 3 года назад +2

      @@Bluecho4 its not the third party models that concerns me as much as the netlist grey tide. I agree that some alt models are wicked cool, and i feel (arguably) that if models arent available because GW/FW wont make enough of them, that 3d printing them instead is fine. Theyre only shooting themselves in the foot by writing rules that make a unit a must have but not making sure they have enough supply. They clearly write rules to generate demand for models, so they should take stock of those models into consideration. Market is gonna make it work even if they wont.

    To avoid The Gotcha I bring a list of stratagems and rules that I’m likely to use and explain how each one works and how I’m likely to use them, which can be pretty self explanatory with most rules, then ask my opponent if they have any questions or concerns about rules interactions. Kind of a balance between not telling people how strata work and dumping your whole game plan at someone’s feet, like “hey I have these tools at my disposal but you don’t know if or when I’m liable to use them”

    GW air paint is unbelievably thicc, it really doesn't feel that much thinner than their regular range, so much so I don't even risk putting it through my good airbrush and only use them through my fat needle cheapo airbrush. My pet peeve for gaming is definitely people who never read the FAQ/errata, I generally keep abreast of big developments in other armies, but my friends generally don't and will often turn up reading solely out of their ancient codex + supplement and it honestly feels weird correcting them on their own army's rules. For hobby, it's definitely people who never base their miniatures. To me, a mini is not finished if it isn't based, it's generally not that much effort to have a decent looking base. The excuse of wanting it to not look out of place on the table is bad imo, since if that's the case, use clear bases or base them in the same style as your table. Leaving them as black disks doesn't look any better than putting a little effort in to having a good base scheme. Also the thing to consider is 90% of the time your minis aren't on the table, they're either in storage or on display, in my opinion it's best to have a unifying base theme that compliments the colours of the mini, and places that army into a scene together. Also painting base rims, it just makes it look so much nicer when there's a clean frame to the mini.

    My pet peeve as for the rules is to have absolutely no flexibility about firing in and out of melee. You can have scenarios of units with 20+ models where thanks to a chokepoint only half can fire and have things like a Doomstalker or a Baneblade in view, massive targets that can be hit just by aiming slightly above, and cannot target, or how you can't make the decision of taking the risk and firing into an ongoing melee. It'd be fine if some units had the "honorable" tag and could not fire at all, but come on! Are you really telling me the Exocrine will refuse to fire into a unit of elite marines just because it could risk hitting its Termagaunts? It promotes this really cheesy meta of "lock your tanky units into combat as much as possible to avoid getting targeted" and makes it so chaff is so much less valuable, and can even end up being an asset of your opponent.

      To be fair, I see your point, but then you'd also have the cheese of people voluntarily locking in your valuable units with tarpits like rippers or something and just blasting away turn after turn. Rather than have an "honorable" keyword that bans shooting into melee, think it would make more sense for certain units and factions (Nids of course with anything, CSM shooting into cultists, DG into poxwalkers,...) to have a special rule that means they can do that. Or hell, actually make the keyword "disposable" and then have the rule be you can shoot at units engaged in melee with "disposable" units, but half the shots are hitting the disposable unit or something.

    • @mariojorge68
      @mariojorge68 3 года назад

      @@samb.8134 The homebrew I use is that firing into melee carries an unmodifiable -1 to hit, and misses must be rerolled but this time for hitting your own troops. The chaff used to tarpit dies pretty quickly, and it is a good risk vs reward. Funnily enough had a friend who was playing with these homebrew rules and decided to shoot into my Skorpekh blob he locked down with his Poxwalkers. When he was over, all his poxies were dead, and the Skorpekhs lost one wound total. Never seen such dice misfortune in my life.

    My biggest pet peeve is Primaris.
    I'm a Salamanders fan. In all of Primaris, there's 4 models worth picking up as a Salamander, 1 of them is a character, and none of them have ob sec, which 9th has made the centerpiece of the game. I get that the narrative is Ultramarine centric, but this is ridiculous. It gets even worse for Space Wolves, who have all those cool named core units who end up left in the cold for intercessor blobs and blade guards. Model for model, Primaris versions cost more points and show little if any benefit. Example: intercessors and tac marines. Even on all stats except attacks, where the intercessors get one more per on both regular and sergeants. However, intercessors squads can't take combi, heavy, or special weapons, can't use any dedicated transports except for impulsors, and even in those you can only fit a max of 6 models. Most players aren't gonna take a full 10 model intercessor squad unless it's to park it on an objective in their own deployment zone and hope that their opponent doesn't deep strike something especially gnarly to wipe it out because good luck foot slogging it across the table to make an assault. Either they'll get blasted to bits by enemy heavy weapons, or they'll get swarmed by faster enemy chaff and get bogged down until turn 4-5.

    1. By far my biggest is don't touch my models without permission. They're mine, not yours. Just don't do it. (It comes from having a whole army of eldar jetbikes and vypers, who break if you so much as look at them wrongly).
    2. In game remove failed rolls not successes, it keeps things transparent and reduces the temptation to cheat.
    3. The paintbrush face down in water gives me a nervous tick.
    4. Personally I refuse to play with unpainted miniatures (however, I don't mind playing against them. They're your models afterall).
    4b. An extension of that is that I can't play with models I didn't personally paint. They just don't feel like mine.

    Pet peeves: Gamewise, people assuming you like an army just because it's strong at the moment. For example, I like dark eldar because I think that in a universe populated by evil bastards, playing the most evil bastards in said universe is really fun and interesting. The fact they're good right now, which is really just because they're one of the few armies with a ninth ed Codex, has nothing to do with it. Hobbywise, the very simple task of putting the tiny parts of models together, like their arms, is extremely frustrating. Gluing an arm with a hand and an arm with a gun together is annoying enough, trying to glue the ends of the arms to the shoulders at the same time is just infuriating. Probably because of inexperience with that one, but hey, it's still annoying

    Hobby Pet Peeve: Basing
    I'm actually just getting into building and painting my own models, but I've already become rather frustrated with the number of people insisting on complex details on bases. Yes, once you're done painting the model, you should clean up the base. Yes, adding extra details might look nice and add a bit of flavoring to the model. But, how did we get to this widespread obsession with gluing little tufts of grass to plastic discs? And it's gotten to the point that people are being penalized at tournaments for their bases not being "detailed enough"? It's just such a bizarre form of gatekeeping.
    Game Pet Peeve: AP Creep
    I know the mechanic is set up the way it is to try to streamline using weapons to counter lightly or heavily armored targets, but the sheer breadth and and variety of AP weapons feels a tad extreme. You can spend a bunch of points giving your troops better saves, and then go up against an entire army of AP -2 or better. Yes, a higher base save is still better, but it feels like you got a lot less value for those points. Your armor save fluctuates so much, I almost wonder if it's even worth putting a number of the data sheet.

    As an example, you want to hide something from my army. I, as your opponent, should double check to make sure that my units can't see it, or that you need to move it around to protect it.
    No one at my local stores does this. They will purposefully keep from saying anything, and then shoot your models that you thought were hidden. I even say I intend to hide them from you, as I would like to not be shot turn one from across the map. 'Gotchas' are abused all the time at my local stores as well, to the point I began learning everyone's codex to avoid them in the future.
    Some of the players have adapted by 'forgetting' certain relics or warlord traits until it's convenient, and they don't give me answers, or they give me vague answers, when I ask them what their relics or traits are. It's quite toxic when it happens, and is very infuriating. I remind them that it is literally against the rules to withhold that information from your opponents, but I digress.
    TLDR- Players at my local scene don't have much sportsmanship, if any at all, and just want to win rather than play an interesting game.

    I love the insights y'all bring, 'cause it's just a buncha dudes, not pros and people who've been in it for 20 years. 10/10

    My pet peeve is other people getting butthurt I don't base my models (besides a colour ring around the sides for unit clarity). Like, I get that the models looks better/more immersive when based, but personally I'd bugged more if I based my models a certain way and the board/terrain didn't match (e.g. grass basing on urban terrain)

    My pet peeve is the over use of the war cry, “let’s gooooooo!”

    Matt is very much right about models that aren't (physically) well balanced or posed in relation to the size of their bases, it's super annoying, gets in the way of playing and can easily damage the miniature, especially if it's resin
    Also, my personal pet peeves are netlisting (damages the creative aspect of armybuilding, leads to several fractions barely being played anymore because they're shunned as "weak" and is generally a kinda lame way to get into a game that, in my opinion, requires a lot of trial and error) and people using convenience as an obvious excuse for cheating - e.g. moving a large unit in ways that normally wouldn't be possible, or even obviously beyond their movement value, because they don't feel like measuring. Oddly enough those are ALWAYS the same people who get super anal about line of sight

    I hate gotchas. I was playing a casual game with my friend who just got the ynead box, and I was playing necrons and got my skorpekh to get a charge on the yncarne, and my lychguard got a charge onto a shadowseer. I fought with the lychguard and killed the shadowseer, and then he just picks up the yncarne and moves it where the shadowseer died out of engagement range of the skorpekh destroyers. It was his first time using the model and understanding how it worked but man was it frustrating.

    My biggest pet peeve for the hobby and the game kind of blend together. Painting.
    Hobby: I hate it. It's boring and tedious. Sure things look nice after, but the effort required rips the fun out of my HOBBY.
    Game: People who get upset with me or pester me about painting my models. Short answer, No. Long answer, when I feel like it if I feel like it, but until then Noooooooooooo. The game creating a rule in which I play at a disadvantage because I don't enjoy and won't force an aspect of the hobby on myself. Only empowering the people constantly whinging at me not painting my models. To the point the game and the hobby are less enjoyable.

    I can Second the recommendations to Jack of Clubs/Wyatt & NextLevelPainting/Kenny, amazing styles of painting, great teachers for new airbrush users.

    Heard that windex was an amazing paint thinner for air brushing. I gave it a shot, and it has been awesome. It is tough to get the viscosity right though.

    My petpeeve is just HOW bad the power level/points balance is. It's definetly better in 9th then it used to be, but there are still some very dumb examples, expecially for the bigger things (mostly forge world), like models costing almost half as many points then another one and having double the power level. One expecially bad case I had found was with the IG's lords of war: the Baneblade at the time costed around 350 points without wargear, and had a power level of 28, while the Dominus Armored Siege Bombard (that's a big name) costed 600 points, but it's power level was just 19. I get that the whole idea of power levels is making a game "less strictly balanced", but if something alternates between being kinda ok to actually unplayable based on which system you want to use I don't think it's a good thing.

    Personal per peeve would be whining
    Cause I play death guard and they have a 5 up feel no pain when they fail a savoring throw (it is on all units) and a battle mate that I play with often complains about that rule and than play an meta army to curb stomp me, he has two armigers. And a full force of eldar wraith guard

    My pet peeve happens all the time, and that is rolling dice next to previously rolled dice. Which can be extremely confusing for which roll was which since one or more stray dice goes in the other pile, or worse the dice collide and change previously rolled numbers. This causes my blood to boil and it happens in almost every battle report with tiny baby dice boxes for extra pet peeviness. For example, Timmy could have rolled a big cluster of dice followed up by another roll and Timmy tells me he rolled four sixes. I, with my goldfish brain that lacks object permeance, look down at his dice and see three sixes while I question if Timmy actually passed elementary school. Obviously this isn't factoring in cheating, I just have to take someone else's word that my own eyes are wrong. But, you know how this exact scenario could have been completely avoided? If you just didn't roll your dice nearly on top of each other.
