  • Well Plant Lovers, usually as we head into late Autumn/Winter there's not much on the horizon colour wise! However at the moment I seem to have a ton of plants in spike - several being first time bloomers and some....let's just say if they do end up flowering I'll do some sort of triumphant dance!! SO join me for a look a=t what's in bloom this late Autumn!
The plants we look at in this video are:
    Dendrobium Jesmond Sparkler 'Greg Hall'
    No ID 'red' Sarcochilus
    Dendrobium moniliforme 'variegata'
    Phalaenopsis aphrodite
    Epidendrum centropetalum
    Cymbidium Canned Magic 'Kobe'
    Fredclarkeara Midnight Lace
    Laelia 'Rosey Tiger'
    Cymbidium maguanense
    No ID Zygopetalum
You can find my Cymbidium care video play list here: • Playlist
You can find my Sarcochilus care video play list here: • SARCOCHILUS ORCHID CARE

Hello Matthew! This is about mycorrhizal fungi. I just read an article in the American Orchid Society "Orchids" and it mentions
Jean Gratiot, a French medical doctor, applying mycorrhizal science to growing potatoes WW I. Here's the citation:
The Bulletin of the American Orchid Society, vol. 92, #8, August 2023, pgs.590-599. Hope you find it interesting. 🤩

Congrats on flowering the Dendrobium maniliforme orchid! I have one (non-variegated) that has been with me for several years. Sadly, I have yet to see it bloom. Your plant is keeping my hope alive to see my plant bloom one day lol

My neighbour went for a holiday last Feb and left her cymbidium, the leaves were all yellow and very dry. After few weeks of giving it a shower, it started to have 3 spikes. My friend said it was a gift but have never flower ever since. Some of my cymbidium have spiked early too. Thanks for your videos.

Great vid Matthew, for my part in bayside Melbourne I have a Cymbid that always flowers in late Autumn, it has the most perfect rounded petals, I only wish we could share images here but I digress. The main reason for a reply was that I also have a Dend. moniliforme varigated. It, like yours drops a couple of leaves in Autumn however it only had 1 cane when purchased and I've played catch-up with it for the past 3 years - it's nowhere near the size of yours and possibly a couple of years away from flowering. Keep us informed on your Mono you're the only person I know that is also growing them so it's great to compare.

Interesting! I will! I should have a few flowers this season. Mine did take a while to kick off but it certainly is vigorous now!

Hi Matt. I have two of my small juvenile dendrobium hybrids also in spike/bud. I was also quite surprised.
I also have a Cymbidium with 2 spikes fully open and it’s working on a 3rd. It’s featured in my latest video fwiw.
So it must be something in the air in Melbourne. It’s going to be another weird season.
Lastly, I almost killed my Cym. cannaliculatum by not watering it at all last winter. Its bulbs were SO shriveled and against my better judgement I stayed the course on the not watering thing. I definitely regret that decision. Only advice I can give is let your bulbs/plant be your guide. Don’t let it go too far.

Oh good to know.....I have misted the medium on warmish days during winter, but I agree, you have to 'listen' to the plants not follow a rule to the letter! Thanks for watching!

Also seeing cymbidiums soon to open in sydney, they were early in 2022 as well, currently enjoying beautiful but tiny dendrochilum saccolabium flowers.
Looking forward to some updates on the Zygo - Congrats Matthew!

In Brisbane I have spikes on Cattleyas, Beallaras, & hard cane Dendrobiums but the temps have gone down. The buds seem to have slowed growth so I hope they don’t blast!

I like the heat. I grew up where it was cold all the time. Now we live in southern Maryland and it gets in 80/90 F here in the summer. It would be great to meet up if we do go to your neck of the woods

I've just discovered all your videos! Thanks so much for all the info. Have you done anything on treating fungus on orchid leaves? And also, do you ever use rooting hormones?

Well thanx. Right now we are in the planning phase. So not sure what we really want to do. But I would luv the reef. And going on a wild life hike to see the native animals. In new Zealand we want to go where they filmed LoTR and Xena ....lol that was one of my favorite shows

Might the paph be a laurenceanum or callosum? If it might be a hybrid, it could be a Maudiae?
