  • Although there are already a lot of covers on this song, I wanted to give you a detailed explanation of the strumming and the little variations. Nonetheless, these are just suggestions and you can play the song in many different ways. It will always sound fine if you've got the chords down and play it with feel, but still, I included a continuous strumming pattern that you can play throughout almost the entire song.
    All chord shapes are related to the capo (3rd fret).
    Demonstration: 0:00
    Chords: 1:12
    Intro: 2:40
    Verse: 5:20
    Alternative continuous strumming: 5:40
    Chorus: 6:33
    Bridge: 8:09
    EDIT: It was pointed out to me by Brian that he plays an Fmaj7 instead of the first C/B in the main chord progression. Figuring this song out by ear from the original recording, it sounded like a C/B, but in his live performances, you can see him play this Fmaj7. So the chord progression after the Am can also be played as F - C - C/B.
    One more variation that he does live is playing a C/G instead of a regular C. Also, he does a pull off with his middle finger on the 2nd fret of the D string on this C/G chord before going to the C/B.
    Moreover, you can play a Gadd11 instead of the C/B throughout the entire song, so it has a bit more bass to it.
    Hope you enjoyed this tutorial... leave a like if you did! Also, feel free to check out my channel for more guitar tutorials.

    Dude Im pretty sure he goes to F after Am
    Am F C C/B
    that's the way it sounds to me anyways. and if you watch him play it live and see his fingering positions for each chord it doesn't look like he goes to that C/B after Am

    • @hennareytutorials
      @hennareytutorials  4 года назад +19

      Yeah, now that you say it, it looks to me that way too in his live performances... I was going after the original recording and thought it was that walk up and then back down over the C/B... Thanks for the correction, I'll put it in the description! :)

    Your video is a good video that I don't get tired of watching over and over again. Your video becomes an umbrella in my heart when it rains and a warm fireplace in my heart when it snows. I was surprised and touched by your sincerity and hard work while watching the video. I'm looking at your video like a dream. When the chilly, fragrant wind brushed my cheeks, I watched the video of you meeting for the first time today. When wild flowers with unknown names hidden by the roadside bloom, I remember my old memories hidden on the other side of my memory. My eyes are I was moved by your video and fell in love with it. The countless stars shining in the winter night sky are each beautiful, but I fell in love with your image that shines in my heart, and your image is so beautiful and enchanting. By chance at the winter window, as the algorithm introduced me, when I opened my RUclips window, the first video I saw was your video. Algorithm informed me that your video is so good and good. It's so nice to see your video out of the many videos that pop up on RUclips like grains of sand on the beach. Your video moves my heart. I was so moved by your video that I can't forget it even in my dreams, and happiness floods me.

    Love these GAI vids. He's one of my favorite artists; saw him at Red Rocks '19.
    I'm just a beginner. This song is too advanced for me. I just enjoy learning the cords for now.
    Idk if this applies to experienced players, but the strumming is damn difficult. If you want any suggestions to improve your already excellent lessons, maybe a word or two on the strumming techniques you're using for songs like these.
    Thanks for vids. Please keep them coming.

    • @hennareytutorials
      @hennareytutorials  3 года назад

      Thanks for your feedback, Marshall! I'll try to implement some beginners tips into my vids.
      One thing I can already tell is that it's helpful to always keep your hands moving Down and Up in eight notes to keep rhythm and time... The DUDUs I put in the bottom line should give you the reference for when to strum. But besides these actual strums, you should keep your hand moving the whole time without hitting the strings (ghost strums, so to speak).
      Hope that helps for now!

    • @marshallsolomon9488
      @marshallsolomon9488 3 года назад

      @@hennareytutorials Thanks. That definitely helps.
      I like strumming without a pick. It looks like you kind of hold your hand as if you were holding a pick during this song. I'm sure 10 players would strum it in 10 different ways. I've noticed ARK Guitar typically uses more of a loose index finger (for lack of a better way to describe it). I'm just tinkering for now. Need to learn to use the pick better. But a pick just sounds so heavy-handed on this song, at least when I use one :/

    • @hennareytutorials
      @hennareytutorials  3 года назад

      @@marshallsolomon9488 Very good analysis! I see, you have a good eye on these things. And you're right, there are like thousand different ways to strum and you can just go with what feels comfortable to you.
      for me, it's kind of depending on how I want it to sound. I use Alan's technique with a loose index and thumb movement for more quiet and soft strumming, and the way I do in this video (as if I was holding a pick and strumming with the fingernails of my index and thumb) for more powerful strumming. Here you need to tilt your wrist in a way that on the up strum (when you hit the strings with the nail of your thumb) the back of of your hand is pointing towards you. when you strum down with the nail of your index, the back of your handing should be pointing away from you. (Hope this explanation makes sense)
      Concerning the pick, it always sounds heavy handed at the start. First thing I can say is that you should not hold on too tight to the pick, even though it feels like you'd loose it otherwise.
      But it's also due to your right wrist movement. You can just use the same technique that I just explained beforehand. It needs a little bit of getting used to, but you'll find it sounds much smoother when you've got it down! :)

      @marshallsolomon9488 3 года назад

      @@hennareytutorials That's incredibly helpful! Thank you.
      As far as the pick, I am trying to do exactly what you said.
      My high e string rings out sooooo loud that it overwhelms everything else when I use a pick. Very frustrating.

    Ur friend did a very nice tutorial of the stable song. He didn't put in the strumming pattern like you do in your videos. Is there any way you could write down that strumming pattern? Or are you going to do your own tutorial of that song? 😊
    Liebe Grüße aus München

    • @hennareytutorials
      @hennareytutorials  3 года назад +1

      Hey Philipp, das Strumming vom Stable Song ist sehr irregulär und deshalb schwer zu verallgemeinern.
      Ich versuche es trotzdem mal: Wenn ein Akkord nur für einen halben Takt gespielt wird, wie z.B das C/G und das Gadd11 im Intro spielt er immer D D DUDU und ansonsten irgendwas um D D DU DUU DUU DU herum, wenn ein Akkord einen Takt lang gespielt wird. Das ist so ein klassisches Folk-Strumming Pattern.
      Bei GAI gehts aber immer viel um Feeling und Variation beim Strumming. Also einfach die Hand in Achteln hoch und runter bewegen und so strummen, wie es sich für dich gut anhört :)
