Not only does it show nothing lasts forever but it shows the beauty and mastery in what we can create and build and more importantly how we can let it go, detach, and not let the things we create control us
i enjoy the fact that the sand is thrown into the water and the vessel is washed out to remove any traces that may remain. the only thing left to "value" is the experience.
MUDSWAT law of conservation of energy and mass and nothing doesn't last forever. See how this paradoxical system works now. There is no meaning only knowing
I often think about this and many times in my life I’ve felt like impermanence and things that took so long to do and so much energy have been ruined - and it always brings me back to thinking of this sand art mandala ritual! I really think it is beautiful!!!
The Dalai Lama said, “Treat your enemies as if they were your precious jewels, for they will build your tolerates and patience on your road to enlightenment.”
I'm not sure why this ceremonial undertaking is so beautiful to me but I know one thing: there is always a lesson to be learned from performances such as this
This is very educational. People got all kinds of trouble that they just can't let go. Like something you've been working so long but have to let go, or a relationship that just messed up for so long you just can't figure out. I guess if one can get through a mandala once, then it should be much easier for them when it comes to let go something no matter how nice it was or how much effort you put.

@@gerunkwon2598 ah, actually if he is a buddhist he wouldnt need to be scared of death if you didnt do anything bad, why would younneed to be scared? Your body is just a vessel for your soul, life continues after death
I recently was part of producing a large amount of product which wound up needing to be discarded. A lot of energy, heart and soul was put into creating this product which then had to be tossed. It really upset me but it brought me back to this teaching.
Poetick, this goes beyond what art thoes: art remains in its physical form like a looking glass into OM. Here even the physical form is scattered in the river of life. Yet the concept of it's physical form remains in the tradition, and can be reproduced when the vibes are right. Fascinating.
I mean yes, but also no. this ritual applies partially since people wish to preserve this, but not entirely, since Norte Dame inst the creation of any of the people who wish to rebuild it. its kind of noble that people want to preserve a beautiful thing for posterity, and whilst i agree that we need to let go of things, i need to point out that our society is not built upon the values found in Buddhism and doesn't *really* come under its scrutiny. and if you wish to follow the values of buddhism then you are welcome, but you must accept other people have other values and some value the existence of notre dame.
Thank you. Lovely. We only now begin to understand the power of sacred images, geometry and it's important to our spiritual development. The Tibetan Buddhists have been ahead of us for centuries. Ben

thanks for the video. what i am very interested in, is the bottle they use to put the sand into. i am interested, is there any ritual connection with it? a connection to something?
I think it's similar to an ash container or an urn. As my culture, after the cremation to ashes, they keep in it and later scattering over the sea or the river as believed that to let the spirit enters the blessing place or heaven.
Es algo maravilloso poder sentir cierta sensación en toda la evolución, lamentablemente solo puedo imaginar dado que solo hablo español. Me gustaría conocer el valor real dado al mandala y no la ficción de occidente.🙏
you should try going to that MONSTER Tibetan monastery in norther cali. i dunno but i would think they would do original sand mandala's there. and it looks beautiful there.
Who would have thought that at one time now, monks would have bodyguards and holding umbrella to cover his head from the sun. In the past, monks took suffering in to know the beauty of life.
Lado Barnovi nope, just being mushed together into sand and pouring it into the ocean. You were thinking of it being glass and dropping it from a building a shattering weren't you?
Actually, the parasol is a traditional "auspicious symbol" in Tibetan Buddhism; it is symbolic of the protection of Buddha. But you're right about the bodyguards.
The end is important in all things. To not consider how something will end, or to wish it to last somehow 'forever' is to be ignorant of its true role in the universe, and the true beauty of its existence.
I could be wrong, but 1.) I'm pretty sure that the Dalai Lama isn't blind. He probably saw the cameras/camera men and photographers. 2.) isn't that a Buddhist monk @3:56 witha digital camera taking pictures of the process. I think the impermanence refers to the item itself, not the fact that it was made.
Andrestor The point is to show that all things come to an end using the mandala as a visual representation and then destroying it but the video captures it and the visual is kept indefinitely.
I once watched this done in person, at a small shopping mall in Kahului, Maui, HI. It is a total violation of their wishes to photograph or record video of the mandalas. It sucks that someone snuck a video of it, and posted it up on the web. It's supposed to be impermanent, and NOW it's forever. Sad.
The pirpuse of this ritual is to Charge the sand with ultra dimmentional energy then place it in the river thus reconsecrating-it with mandala energy vortice .
The tranquillity is a front, last time they went to the White House they kept everyone awake with heavy rock music, left a mountain of rubbish when they left and scrawled "we woz here" on the walls. Good film though.
And better yet: one of the teachings of Buddhism is balance. If one supposes that the mandala's creation is permanent because of this video, one must also concede that its destruction is equally as permanent. Thus, balance (its "eternal" creation & destruction) is achieved.
I understand that the Gohonzon mandala is a key element in Nichiren Buddhist practice. Does anyone know if different Gohonzon have difference characteristics or transformational ability? There are standard size paper Gohonzon, small travel one that fit in the pocket and even a solid wooden one I found on eBay for the same cost as the paper ones. www.ebay.com/itm/-/262532086749? Which is best or is it just a matter of individual preference? What size do most people have? Is $170 a good price for a solid wood one?
Really because I heard from my Tibetan Buddhist friends that this is actually a spell casting method. They believe a lasting power comes once the sand is gone toward a specific long lasting goal. It isn't all that meets the eye. Is this not true? are they mistook?
These things are really beautiful and artistic, but it's really such a shame to destroy them. I understand the symbology of it but it just seems like an awful waste of time to make it only to destroy it.
+TheGenghisKhunt That is because we haven't been able to gather the level of detachment from the material world that these people have. That is why this seems like a waste of time to us, but not to them.
