    I have severe lumbar stenosis. When I started doing these streches I had a good measure of pain relief for the adductors and abductors but I hadnt been doing the hip flexors so I shall start doing these as well. Im working towards a big reduction of need for strong pain meds. I used to be really flexible and had great range of movement and then due to injury this really reduced my strength and flex. Its going to be a hard slog back to quality condition but I will get there. Im 67 and ageing is a factor to keep in mind but its not going to stop me getting fitter and healthy again. :-) :-) :-)

      @@sbybill3271 It did get better so the need for pain relief has reduced to paracetamol a few times a day. Unfortunately I have had to deal with breast cancer and all that it brings so I've gone backwards again in my fitness regimine. Chemoo is next so I need to come to grips with that. I will get there tho'.

    Ever since I watched your video, I have faithfully performed the three exercises .I want to tell you they have been a God send. I have so far been able to play golf and walk without issues this season, without experiencing the trauma associated with lumbar stenosois . Thank you so much.! .They are a permanent part of my daily exercise routine.

    Such simple exercises helped me avoid an operation. I recommend it! For upper back stenosis, what works for me is a gummi band from left hand to right hand, holding one arm down to the side of the body and raising upward the other hand with arm straight up above the head. Sometimes the simplest things helps.

    I worked so hard in my life climbing ladders painting houses, roofing ect... I started getting stenosis at age 37. Lol. Ugh Im 44 now and my right leg goes numb too. Isnt life great.

      Same here, I had a car accident though, but stenosis young because of it. Some days I can barely walk. So painful. Can’t pick anything up off the floor. Total nightmare to live with.

    Awesome. I suffer from stenosis and the pain is excruciating when it shows up, No warning everyday, specially early in the morning. SO I sleep sitting and that too is hurtful after a while. I tried this exercise and IMMEDIATELY there was relief. Did I mention the pain would be SO bad that I would have to take a Tramadol and wait for the pain to drop. I tried it this morning and I went from 10+ Pain to 0. No pill. Thank you Sir. God Bless you for sharing.

    I have a recent MRI stating L5 stenosis. Contrary to your statements above, walking is mostly pain free, but sitting for 1/2 hour initiates pain. But I am going to give your exercises a good trial period, because my physical therapist has never suggested them and neither has anyone else to my knowledge. Thank you. Brian

      Same l5s1 here, tip: tight with a extra belt on hip and stick a empty waterbottle on back of belt towards pain side left or right . Relief that let you do your driving or tasks .

      But does your MRI say, "Severe central spinal stenosis?"
      Just "spinal stenosis" does not equal, "severe spinal stenosis." You may have only mild lumbar stenosis with severe facet arthrosis, herniated disc, spondylolisthesis, foraminal stenosis, calcified ligamentus flavum, spondylosis.....
      The trick is to determine which level is involved and which pathological mechanisms are at work, causing your pain. Unless your MRI says, severe central lumbar stenosis, you likely do not have neurogenic claudication with severe central lumbar stenosis. Ask your orthopedic surgeon if your mild or moderate spinal stenosis is likely causing your symptoms. These exercises are for those with severe central lumbar stenosis with neurogenic claudification.
      Get your orthopedic surgeon to send you to a good physical therapist who can give you proper exercises. Understand your condition. Spending the time necessary to understand this is time well-spent for me. I am officially and formerly diagnosed with severe central spinal stenosis at L4-L5. It isn't the facet joints. So, a radiofrequency ablation at the facet joints would not help me, and my orthopedic surgeon agrees. My best move is sitting in a chair and touching my toes. That opens up the posterior parts of the lumbar spine for me, which is what I need for my neurogenic claudication. Unless you have severe central spinal stenosis and neurogenic claudication, these exercises will not help other conditions of the lumbar spine. That's what I learned. I hope you can learn from my mistakes like doing McKensie extentions, the worst thing for lumbar stenosis. What if you have osteoporosis and get fragility fractures and compression fractures? Learn all you can, but don't try to be your own doctor. Learn and work with your doctor or change doctors.
      Best of luck on your journey. Just had my second lumbar MRI and third consultation with spinal surgeons. They say epidural injections that are both diagnostic and therapuetic. The chair exercise has helped 75%. But if sitting still hurts, you have other lumbar pathology. Stenosis is usually asymptomatic until it is severe for some period of time. Then you get neurogenic claudication. This is unique to prolonged severe lumbar central stenosis. You likely have foram8nal stenosis on an exiting nerve root, a different mechanism causing symptoms.

    I'm 38 years old and was diagnosed with lumbar stenosis late last month. It does hurt to walk and sit. This far, I'm not facing surgery, but it might still be on the table.
    I'll give these exercises a try. I hope they'll work.

      If I lean forward I scream out like I have Tourettes. The only relief is to lie on my left side. This is awful.

      @@sbybill3271 When I can, they help a little. I'll lean over my work area for a few moments and my coworkers think I'm trying to nap on the job. But it does help ease some of the pain for a bit.

    Don't forget to look into the McGill 3 and do tons of ISOMETRIC core work every day. Almost nobody does isometric work. I'm suffering from L4 and honestly get no relief from anything at this point except my decompression vest and only when I do it (not really after). If I decompress it helps for about 30 seconds after I stop decompressing heh. You will need to do the core work to help PREVENT further slippage and even then it's not guaranteed. I'm getting a microdisectomy here soon.

    Fantastic video !! I had an X-ray done it was first time I heard of this big words. spinal stenosis a form of disk degenerative disease, but it gets worse when I sit down more big words : sciatica and piriformis. I went to PT 2xweek for six weeks and then started doing on my own.... after 5 months symptoms still lingers. Thanks for the exercise and for given me hope ...I guess I need to be more committed and do more sets and repetitions more often. I will let you know how it goes after six weeks.

    Dear Dr.
    2 years back I had surgery on my neck for nerve compression, now I am doing regular walking, exercise, as I have compression at L4,5 I was advised to do exercise.
    Now I feel prickly pain and numbness in left hand fingers always and occasionally in my right hand thumb finger.
    please suggest me a best exercise to get rid of the pain and numbness. please

    Excellent thank you. I have a good feeling those first two movements …I think they are going to be very helpful. I’m a little hesitant about doing the third because any time I bend over like that from standing it feels good but after getting out of that position the pain really comes on.

    I’m only 29 and was diagnosed with it. It doesn’t really feel like pain. Really feels like a pump. My lower back just gets a crazy burn. Dr put me on a anti inflammatory and it helped for like 4 days then it came back but at least now it’s not both sides of my lower back. It’s just left now. Still drives me crazy though

    I am 37 yrs and have been diagnosed with spinal stenosis. Life has become uneasy. I have had x-rays, MRI, EMG and CT scan. I don’t want to have surgery. Can these exercises really help me? It has become difficult walking, sitting, driving or even standing. Please help if you can

      Elena maureen Delacruz-royo Google “lateral recess stenosis” with quotes. Nerve root compression causes pain in buttocks and shooting sensations or pain down the leg. I also have light numbess in toes.

    What if u have Cervical Stenosis? My neck was broken in 1994 and I’ve got horrible nerve damage, neck pain, instability (with fear of paralysis) and stage 4 Rheumatoid Arthritis (also long, long, long term steroid use. Can ANY EXERCISE HELP???

      I am going through a very similar experience... See an orthopedist and maybe he/ she will recomend physical therapy... Do not lift weights, do repetetive twisting or bending on your own- walking is the best exercise. 30 min at least 1 hour if you can.

      If you have access to a staircase .. put one foot up on the second or third step and it should be the same distance up as the height of the park bench … hope this helps

      If you bend to one side, the stenosis is increased on the opposite side in the back, causing increased pain.

    i healed from spinal stenosis/arthritis after having it for 6 months with devil's claw (anti- inflammatory, for back pain) and omega 3. I took 10 rounds of antibiotics and had a laparoscopy. nothing helped. then I started these two pills- gone within 3 weeks.

      Stairs will work and you can place your hand on the railing or against a wall for stability.

    Thank you! these stretches gave me immediate relief. I do experience some pain in the bad hip (L) though but it goes away soon after the strech. I have a herniated disc (L4/L5) and 3 bulging discs (L3/L4, L4/L5 and L5/S1), could I continue with these stretches?

    Can anyone help me. I have a disc bulge on L4-L5 with Moderate central canal stenosis without significant foraminal stenosis and disc herniation on L5-S1 with severe central canal stenosis. I can walk and stand and feel find. The problem with me is when I sit down or bend down.

    I have foraminal stenosis on my right side......just to the side of my crack.......that where most of my pain is....the nerve exit roots.....pain goes a round to the front of my hip...down the inside of my leg...down the back of my calf and under the sole of my feet.......it hurts real bad when i stand still or in a queue......can only walk for 10 mins and need to sit down......Do you think this can work for me please?...ive had this for 3 years and it hurts like hell all day.,....bugling disc on L5/S1 region too.

    Is this okay with back surgery needed and hips too? Plus Stenosis?
    Had Lumbar 4 an 5 fused in 2000 but it ended up terrible mess in the middle of surgery, I was under all day and have Titanium Rod on right and Cage on left sides of the spine. then got MERS infection and re-opened. I never want to go through what I did then. But now the lumbar 3 and 4 are giving me trouble and Dr9Orthopedic) says I need surgery again. ( Different Dr and hospital) But it is on hold with coronavirus and plus they now think I need to go to a bigger hospital in the city, and this may be lengthy again. Well, I am waiting as this was the Surgical nurse and not my Dr. She said they are discussing it, and I will know more, or have surgery set for April or May. But I would rather do this, to be honest, if it could help.
    But both hips are losing cartilage and need surgery too so must be a little careful. I am getting frightened, to be honest. I was active and always busy and worked so hard all my life ( doing nursing yet) and now all of this. I just wondered if you think this is safe? I think it would be if I go slowly with it? Feeling it out as I go?

    Doctor can you share me your Email Address , i already had a surgery for this , my actual problem was Severe Neurogenic Claudication Secondary to Lumbar Canal Stenosis at L3-4 and L4-5 levels , i was suffering lower back pain radiating to both legs for 9 years , after my surgery i was okay just but , now a days i am retaining the same issue that i had before , besides i am a heavy person with over tummy , weighing around 140 kgs , height 188cms , is these exercises helpful to me to recover what i am suffering right now ?

      Jagadeesh Chandran Losing weight = less squeezing of the discs = less disc herniation and stenosis = less sideways pressure on nerve roots, right?

    From what I can see these movements can be done on a bike especially mountain biking. Either with climbing or decending down a trail.

      Rory Byrne Yikes I am staying off bikes and motorbikes, if I hike one hole my discs would herniate worse and bang my nerve roots!

    If it’s narrowing, it’s narrowing! A professional neurosurgeon is the only one who can make a proper diagnosis. You can do further damage if don’t know what you’re doing! Yikes 😳 What if you have bone chips in your spinal cord and you just taught someone to shove it right into their nerve disabling them! Oh my GOD!

    been having this sharp pain in my both bottom of my feet when I walk or stand, and standing is even worst, as it feels like my feet lower bones are touching the floor, without protection, like needles below my feet, had MRI in my feet, been to many doctors but all say, all looks normal, been living with the unbearable pain for almost 4 years, the weired thing is the pain disapear once I am sitting or off my feet, I don't have any back pain, any thoughts plz!?

      read a book called: the MindBody prescription, healing the body, healing pain. by dr.john E sarno,M.D.. read the whole book. an orthopedic surgeon would say this is what you should do in a situation like yours. this has helped millions & you fit the whole criterion . let me know how it gos when your finished.

    Hi Doc, I have a question about LSS. I'm a PT student working on a case presentation and I'm having trouble determining whether most patients that come to PT show symptoms radiating down the legs or if that's typically seen in more severe/advanced cases. Based on your knowledge/experience, do most PT patients have pain that is confined to the low back?

      My back vertebrae felt warm. Took nsaids ibuprofen and muscle relaxants for 3 weeks until well enough to visit Dr and get MRI.

      @@Besokool I have injuried my back about 30 years ago , and 2 years a go reaggravated it. After 10 months started looking for help , and 28 injections later was told not to do 3-4 things I have done my whole life. stenosis can be marginal or severe. If I twist slightly (I feel it in my spinal core) I was in karate , ran 40+ miles a week, biked , all sorts of things , but if you are thinking you are helping your back - you are not. A human back can only tolerate a certain amount and then it is done. I am 62 , don't look it , but I actually feel like an old man because of it.

    Can anyone help me. I have a disc bulge on L4-L5 with Moderate central canal stenosis without significant foraminal stenosis and disc herniation on L5-S1 with severe central canal stenosis. I can walk and stand and feel find. The problem with me is when I sit down or bend down.
