I just discovered "The Veldt" by Deadmau5 and really enjoyed it. I noticed that I could recreate the riff with my Mono/poly, with the TR-808 trigging the gate of it, and off I went!
Equipment used: Roland TR-808 (drums and trigger for the Mono-poly), Juno 60, Alpha Juno; Korg Mono/Poly, Polysix; Electro Harmonix Small Stone; Boss DD-3; Lexicon MPX500, MPX110; Allen & Heath GS1; Tascam 38, DX-4D; Alesis iO26 & Izotope Ozone 5 for mastering
Only analog synths used, recorded to tape, and mixed with an analog mixer. No computers or MIDI used during recording and mixing. Only the final stereo track was mastered using Izotope Ozone 5 (AAAD).
The tune is written by Joel Zimmerman and Chris James.
My debut album, "To Jupiter and Back", is out now and the CD can be bought here: www.inverse.fi/...
Thanks! The song was sequenced only using the TR808. That means, only the drums and the gate for the Mono/poly were sequenced. The rest was played by hand. The Monopoly and TR808 were recorded onto four tracks on magnetic tape (using the Tascam 38 reel-to-reel recorder) in one take. It was probably the 10th take or so... had to get it right in one take. The remaining four tracks were used for overdubbing the other synths. No computers were used in recording and mixing (only for mastering).
Thank you!
one of the best pieces of electronic music
Well, I like to challenge myself. I wanted to see if I could pull it off on only 8-tracks. Also, I had to perform it and could not edit it afterwards, so it was much more fun to actually learn to play it than edit it together.
Imagine if this analog track came out in the 80s. It would have changed music forever.
or ... the alternative, it would have never been promoted. music industry likes to know if your music is going to make money before they do anything with it. so literally he would have been a nobody.
What about the work of people like Kraftwerk, jean Michel Jarre, Giorgio Moroder, Patrick Cowley, the synthwave movement etc.?, C'mon, the 80's be magical for this guys, actually Kebu sounds so good because are the son of this guys not at reverse
It would have not been heard at all.... the 80 had almost every genre of electronic music

i dont mean to be off topic but does any of you know of a method to get back into an instagram account??
I was dumb forgot the password. I would love any help you can offer me.
Joel would be proud. He's a complete analog geek. This brought a smile to my face.
He probably used to some extent. But this cover was done using only analog synths. Also, it was recorded to tape and mixed analog.
The clarity and depth of you recordings is amazing. I get goosebumps from those gorgeous bass notes and sweeps. I can FEEL your music. Awesome talent.
Your music is my constant companion as I journey across the world. It wraps me in tranquility, evoking memories of the past and dreams of the future.
This is amazing. The fact that you're still using a tape machine is fucking awesome.
+Ben Funk Sound is better and richer ,if you record on tape using TEAC-tascam 38 ,even higher dynamic 108db with DBX than CD (95 db max) im using too,
that is so awesome
Ben Funk but everyone listen to this on youtube with mp3 quality :(
YAVAMAYstudio yeah a cd has 95 db dynamics, cause you render the song down to 16 bit after the mastering. if you record with 24 bit you get an dynamic range of about 144 db
I woulld still buy Nackamichi Tape deck (not that important) but The Revox would be, I'm retired so maybe Biased Technics are still around.
this analog cover variation by Kebu is so awesome
1:50 is pure bliss AMAZING sounds out of that polysix mannn
I used the "home-made" CV pedal for controlling the filter. Only a bit of reverb was added to the mix.
Best cover of this song on uTube. So much more interesting than seeing someone push launchpad keys.
Everyone's taste and definition of "interesting" is different. No need to diss the Launchpad guys for their work. ;)
Well.. Launchpad stuff is not making music. The music is already made, and they chance the colors or some shit.
THOSE people usually write their own music.
You're too busy watching covers.
LaunchPad is a great tool. M4sonic rawks the eff out of it.
Peter Zachos :: that was pretty dope.
WOW
How come I didn't see this video before? Excellent done!! Congratulations!!!
I am the original owner of a virtually brand new mono/poly in its original box. now I know why I haven't sold it! what a great production mr. kebu
It has a spice of Chicane, especially around 2:05 :) I love it!
lmao me too until i read this
Dude your profile pic scared me. I thought I'm having a seizure or something
Very impressive. Can't get enough.
That Mono/Poly sounds so sweet. Everything really. Great work!
I don't know what's more awesome... The fact that you did this, or the idea that one day you went into this room and thought "Y-know, 9 keyboards isn't quite enough. I could use another" Nice work, man!
you are a freaking legend sir! Your setup is amazing... How long did it take you to accumulate all of that greatness?
I keep coming back to watch this vid. So good! Especially that MonoPoly bassline.
Autotross ueah dude. Perfect.
Dat polysix tho! That's a fucking amazing pad sound in the break. WANT.
incrible. tank you. perfect sound beautifull
Amazing! All the comments about being better, etc, but the amount of effort and time into the detail of playing each part, overdubbing to tape, and mixing down on a desk instead of in the DAW - people have no idea what all that took. Nobody considers things like keeping each part in sync when the record head is 1-1/4"" ahead of the playback head ;) The time involved alone...!!! Outstanding undertaking, and fantastic job doing it! Not that long ago all music had to be done that way.
You really capture the sound well. Brilliant cover.
Yes! Here's the kick drum chain: 808 kick --> 3630 compressor --> Graphic EQ --> Tape --> Graphic EQ --> channel EQ on the mixer. And just a tad of reverb (HPF on the reverb).
For me personally this is the best video of this Year! Thank you so much!!! I like the music and I like the fact you show what synths you use for your songs! I didnt know the Polysix sounds so good. Keep up the good work! Thank you once again!
@Kebu excellent work. It looks like you're opening the filter on the Mono/Poly with a volume pedal passing a 9V battery through? I have to say too, it looks like you have a Memorymoog there too but chose to do a lot of the splashes with the Polysix. I've had a Prophet-5 and Jupiter-8 but the Polysix seems to punch above it's weight, thanks to the built-in FX and the two LFOs (main, and PWM). I have a Minimoog as well, but having just gotten a Mono/Poly, I think the SSM2044 is my favorite filter. These budget Korgs really can sound better than the putative "professional" synths for some things.
Impressive cover of "The Veldt" - simply fantastic!
I love the quick shot near the beginning showing the input to the VCF, later followed by the volume pedal and 9V battery...
as someone who loves this song, and has such an appreciation for the analoges i love this video dude, well done
nearly 2018, im watching this again and still love it!
Sweet jesus I love your skillz Kebunaattori!!
My new favorite KEBU! Best!
Nice dude! My respect It's a song for 30min, not just 3min....
Thank you very much for all the instructions and explanations about triggering, filters, ...! Great performance, great video!
This is amazing! I'm a deadmau5 fan and this is my favourite track!
OH MY GOSH! This is like one of my all time favorite tracks, and then you had to go and cover it and make it even BETTER. eargasms everywhere
very nice, i wish that clap would have been better but very nice overall
alexander herrera Yeah, that clap is getting me.

I seriously dig this remake. Such a sweet positive vibe.
This guy is amazing, real talent
Well mister Kebu, I don't often do this but uhh...... I SUBSCRIBED!!!! HOLY SHIT MAN GOOD SHOW!!!
Que hermosa manera de expresar este tipo de música . Sencillamente exelente. Felicitaciones
Absolutely amazing
I congratulate you, your music is wonderful
Fantastic! Can you tell me what video plugin filter you add for the clip?
Wow,Masterfully pleasant.
I just used a single sawtooth wave on my Mono/Poly. But the oscillators are not perfect in tune with each other (since it is an old analog it is impossible to get it perfectly tuned). You could try mix in a second saw wave oscillator, slightly off-tune, but not so high in the mix. And try some mild overdrive as well. I fed the oscillators quite loud into the VCF & VCA, which made the sound overdrive slightly.
Amazing live perform!!
Very beautiful , too melodious and sweet .
1:50 that pad - uh huh. So beautiful!
I am a Synth freak,- Stated- I know my boards -fact....and it's FINALLY good to see a You tube Video where the classic have an owner who KNOWS what he's doing. Impeccable job with a pro!- Well done. And THIS is why you have 200K views, because you're GOOD!!!!!
Hey , Kebu ! That´s great !!! it makes me feel gooooood!
And Abobe & Beyond Remix... a little bit more !!!!
0:22 to the layman this still image just seems to convey "music tech is complicated!" but if you know synths, it reveals a bit of what's going to happen and how the track was made. The VCF cable is connected to a volume pedal we see later, which has, strangely, not an instrument plugged in, but a 9 volt battery! That contraption, hooked up as shown here, lets Kebu control the brightness with his foot and indeed we hear that happening. The cable in to Gate suggests that the musician is triggering the synth with a drum machine, explaining its perfect sync with the beat.
Bill Leeb just posted this to his Facebook, quoting "Kebu has mad skills." ... :)
Beautiful sounds! Classic gear and you know how to play these babies.
Bardzo ladnie .. Zafsze bylem fanem tego co robisz.. i dlatego zaczolem grac.. Pozdrawiam
@Kebu you're a freak. I love it!!! keep it up
Absolutely fantastic! :D
Thank you! I just love this cover...
very talented man
This is pure beauty! Great work, Kebu, even though I would guess that this was a piece of cake to do for you. I love the original (and would definitely count myself as a fan of Joel's creativity, no matter what gear he uses), but there is indeed something special added in this version. Simple saw pluck or not, the Mono/Poly and the Polysix are simply amazing machines. I've never had the pleasure of playing or producing with any of them (only ever plugin versions), but if I ever would be able to spend money on an old analogue synth just for the pleasure of having one, I think that it would be one of those two.
Deadmau5 does the vast majority if his synth work on hardware. He has an enormous modular collection, so to those saying this sounds better than the "digital" original, you might wanna reconsider ur assessment....
Jon122989 I can almost guarantee a lot of this track had to be analog. It's not like he's got all those synths for nothing xD
no he doesnt, i can tell you dont watch his streams. the majority is done on sofware.
Agerix Official yeah. the amount of shit he's been doing with Cthulhu is a testament. Analog synths are nice but you get much more work done quickly through DAW's.
Well, of course he works in a daw. However, he sequences and records the hardware in his daw! Cthulhu is just a midi sequencer, not a synth
Ethan, you do realize that deadmau5 doesnt ever use his analog synths. he does all of his stuff inside of VST's, such as serum, or z3ta, or Sylenth 1.
Gotta love all the analog stuff
Heel mooi nummer😍🎹 groetjes fabian uit Holland
Thx Kebu, come to USA as soon as you can!!!
This sounds makes me feel good!!!!
Holy crap! Amazing sound! Incredible skills. And the gear........
Has deadmau5 seen this? I think he may be proud.
Monty Cruz the snob would think that because he didn't do it the track suffers from (insert snobby idealism)
zues2013 no he wouldn't. deadmau5 loves analog stuff and I think he'd love this tbh
CHROMIUM HERO I've heard Deadmau5 is quite the cocky individual. Either way his stuff is still admittedly pretty good.
Comedy Kennedys I like his music but Deadmau5 does come across as an enormous jerkoff in every interview I've seen of him.
zues2013 He cheered on and really encouraged a video of a kid playing Acedia on a launchpad at his school talent show so i'm pretty sure he'd love this too.
Sublime! Probably the very best cover of anything out there I heard in a long time. Well done!
A musica original é muito boa, mas essa versão ficou de arrepiar!
simply beautiful! i love it ! nice setup.
A proof that you don't need virtual instruments to create marvelous electronic music.
i dig the whole set up, especially the tape recorder! all analog! i love it
Hey Kebu, Amaizing gear. I love mono/poly and polysix. perfect sound!!! but the only thing I don't like it's the effect of your video. You should keep it simple.
i never get tired of watching this video over and over again.
Nice studio!!
I love the way to explain things in your videos how something is done with small notes.
This is SO dope!
The Mono/poly section is a perfect recreation. Mad props for tape recording. You're a true analog musician.
Super performance!!!
I love your synths
Dat kick at the beginning !
Great recording and video Kebu. Nice how you let us in on the details of the recording. Good old Tascam, letting you go in the red nicely!
Man you are a real genious!!! You nailed it and you havent used any computer!
You should check out look mom no computer!
Beautiful. Great video too.
Sounds great!
Superb (analog) cover of a great song. Good job!
awesome!
this IS wonderful!
Nice! I really love that
How everything is beautiful to the ears listen delight my soul dances!!!Thank you for your work is correct i am delighted with you.
Genius and ACE! When will you tour USA????
Umm, it might take a while. I'll try to tour Europe first. :)
+Kebu Madrid? =)
KEBU is a Genius. Detroit! Yes!
I've seen him live in holland :D Pure eargasm
very smooth set
i hope you do more video's like these, Kebu. This is great
Glad I found you!
What's that first monopoly patch? The really percussive one? I hear that sounded lots of songs what's the general way to get it in terms of programming just a short Decay release? Is it better to eat with certain sounds certain synths?
tu as les meilleurs synthé du monde je t'envie !!! merci pour ta bonne musique ! viens tu au Quebec un jour ?
It's an old Allen & Heath GS1. Unfortunately, I'm not so familiar with digital mixers suitable for DAW use. At least the new Yamaha 01v96i mixer has 16 channel USB-interface integrated, but there are surely cheaper alternatives aimed at DAW use.
My man!
Simply beautiful. Well done, man you did a fantastic job!
