Your clamp for gluing segment rings is old-school genius thinking. Since I'm an old-school Norwegian, I decided to try your method. Followed your instructions and completed the clamp and the first ring this morning. Worked flawlessly! Thank you for sharing your talents!
I tried rubber bands and moved to metal band clamps. For years I've been frustrated due to usually having to find two clamps end-to-end to get the the correct size I need and having excess glue on the bands clogging the screw threads. I saw another of your videos where you used this clamp and was amazed at the simplicity. Thanks for this post where you show how you make it and provide comments on best construction techniques and materials. A couple of these are my next shop project!
Been searching for this method. Clamps are giving me troubles, and rubber bands only work for the right size rings. This is very universal. Thanks. Chuck
Hey Earl, Thank you for your contributions to the woodworking community. Guys like you, that are sharing your skills is helping to keep woodworking alive and interesting. I really like the Rassmussen clamp. Could be a merchandising item. Thanks again, Ed W
Yeah, you should sell them It would be an honor for most of us to own a piece of your art/tool Thank you for thee idea. Looking for something cheap and easily accessible I’m working on a 20” stave bass drum
What a great idea! The simple ideas are quite often the best. I made my first segment rings yesterday and struggled with the gapping and clamping. I’ve just watched your video on the segment cutting and now this clamp and I’m happy that my next segments will be a lot tighter than my first!! I really like your method too, watching people like yourself in your shop is great as all the little things you do make a big difference. I’ve just subscribed too . Thank you 👍🏻
I just started turning and really enjoy the idea of segmenting. Thanks for your simple way of getting it done. Remind me of my grandfather and dad that now are both gone.thanks for your channel and honesty. Take care.keep up the great video's
Ok Earl. I've been a segmenting myself for a number of years. Always used rubber bands (never liked using band clamps either). Your clamp looks slick as owl $%$#. I am definitely going to have to give that a try! Thanks for sharing
That's a good idea,I have watched this idea you offered before so I will make one.I just happen to have some three quarter nylon blocks so if I drill a hole through that,it won't split. "THANKS"
Just found your video and channel, great respect to you Sir!! I too served my country ,USMC. It takes a lot of courage for a fellow to post videos on here, considering the idiots that inundate you tube. I have subscribed and hope to see more of these great ideas,as I too, am rather frugal! Now Im off to build a " Rasmussen band clamp"!!
Well, I’m convinced! You run your shop like I do, “nothing wrong with simple and cheap”. I’m ready to start doing some segmented stuff and was looking for an alternative to steel bands. Thanks for sharing. 😎👍
Great idea. Thanks for sharing. I need to make two of them for my project. I used the metal band clamps and what a hassle it was . My segments have to be ripped and will be about 4 to 6 inches high. I am making cannisters for flour and sugar. They'll have lids on them and will be oak. Nothing fancy but useable.
Hi Earl, That is the cat's meow! I will make a few and keep the hose clamps for other uses! Thanks for this and all you helpful videos! Did I mention that I love all of your segmented pieces? Tom
Thanks for the idea, No big box stores here so I'm off to dollar stores to get some rope. I also have lots of screw drivers. No idea how I got so many though.
Hello, Uncle Earl. My name is Anton. I am from Russia. I really liked your video and I have such a question. Please write the size of the segment of this circle, the width of the large radius and the angles of the segment. thank you very much.
Instead of wood, it might be easier to use a short piece of metal pipe with filed slots on the ends. Then tie knots in the cord loop, and you can change loop size by putting the screwdriver through different knots at different locations in the cord loop.
Hello Earl. I like your video on your string clamping segmenting rings. It got me to thinking about making one like yours for the same reason, I was not fond of steel hose clamps. I took a a little different path in my design. It worked but I have only been with it for about one week. Basically I used a 18 inch square piece of plywood, covered it with a plastic bag so the glue would not stick to it from the glue up of a ring. I used a nylon string I ran through a plastic tube used for air line cylinders long enough to encircle most any size ring. Anchor string to an small eyelet screw on the lower left of the board at the edge. Attached a small strip of wood about 1 of 2 inches lower than the screw eye. This way I can wind the string counterclockwise around under the strip of wood and around the ring returning where I started the string. The strip of wood at the bottom acts as a shelf to pull against when the string is tighten. The bottom side of the strip of wood I worked a grove on for the string to beheld captive when the string get tighten. Then the string continues on to the right side of the board where I made a ratchet gear and pawl with spring attached. Made a handle mounted on top of the ratchet with an extra screw to put the string on the screw with little a ring tided to the string. Turning the ratchet takes up the string and tightens the string bring the segment together. With Ratchet and Pawl you can tighten it as tight as you want.
Thanks Earl for the great video. I will try your way as I can see it works very well for you. Thanks for sharing. Also Earl a big thank you for your service to our country as I did hear you say you were in the service. I salute you and again Thank You.
earl rasmussen I was using it on some 4 1/2 inch rings and it worked fine. However I think a line half as thick would give more leeway. Scale everything down proportionally? I will let you know how well it works.
Earl has shown me that keeping things simple is always cheaper. Earl you remind me of my father!! thanks for sharing!!
I made 5 of these clamps, but my dog ate 2 of them. They made great chew toys! The other 3 are working great! Thanks Earl!

@Zion Alexis Happy to help =)
Great idea. I wonder if using some kind of sturdy composite plastic like deck board material
would make it more durable.
Well, I’m convinced! You run your shop like I do, “nothing wrong with simple and cheap”. I’m ready to start doing some segmented stuff and was looking for an alternative to steel bands. Thanks for sharing. 😎👍
First, let me say thank you for your service. Second, this method is one I’m going to use. Thank you for sharing!

Earl thank you for your knowledge. Would you be able to provide a closer pic of the nylon cord and diameter you use to hold glue ups.
Genius but simple! Thanks for sharing

Made a stop block for it ruclips.net/video/jq-DhfRMXrw/видео.html
Earl, question... do you ever have an issue with the glue from the segments sticking to the rope?
Wow, great idea!
Someone on a wood turning Facebook shared this, really good idea.

Send me an email and I will send back a chart of the sizes and angles opensegmenter@gmail.com

I thought about making a ratchet system, but this was so much easier.
Thanks Earl for the great video. I will try your way as I can see it works very well for you. Thanks for sharing. Also Earl a big thank you for your service to our country as I did hear you say you were in the service. I salute you and again Thank You.
Question.... You said this clamp was not suited for smaller rings, why is that?
They are too big to keep the segments aligned right, if I was going to make a lot of smaller rings I would make a smaller clamp
earl rasmussen I was using it on some 4 1/2 inch rings and it worked fine. However I think a line half as thick would give more leeway. Scale everything down proportionally? I will let you know how well it works.
3" is where I run into trouble.
earl rasmussen Do you think it would help to notch the wood at the contact point to help hold alignment of the segments?
Genius
How glue you use ?
I use Titebond II glue
super
GREAT IDEA NO MORE BAND CLAMPS
