hi john, first of all congratulations for the wonderful work. I'd like to know how you made the lighting under the honeycombs, and where did you get the material. Thank you
Links for stuff is in the description of the video, the material I used for most was 3/4 xps rigid foam insulation, with a few made out of MDF and the acoustic tiles were thin plywood.
Here we ussually build DBA subwoofer systems (front/back 4 each) for such large rooms, more absortion would sound this room way besser. Is this room professional messured? A very nice hometheater
Lol no, cause pros cost money and I'm as cheap as they get. I measured 300ms decay time from the main seat, and did absorption panels at the primary reflection points, plus the diffuser and carpet. The walls themselves serve as diffusers because of the gaps and angles in the panels, and the audyssey room correction does the rest for now.
I am absolutely excited to see someone using the LG hu810p!! This is a unicorn that hasn't gotten the praise it deserves.. I love this room!! ❤️❤️❤️ I would like to know if John has his projector calibrated?
No, I need to get it calibrated, or pull the trigger on a good sensor. I do love the projector even though the black levels aren't the best. The colors are crazy vibrant
@@diyhometheater4199 I have spent most of last year in the AVS forum and was able to pull together some close to perfect settings. I used settings from many users post on the forum that had calibration done. So my current settings will put your color at almost reference and the black level will be at least 40% better. The way I got my black level on point was a negative gain gray screen.
I know that the WLED app I use for the walls can clone Phillips Hue devices and other smart devices, so it's possible, but I haven't done it, the screen already takes up most of the field of vision so I don't really need more immersion
subwoofers are usually recommended to be set at least 4, and so that they are located opposite each other, there are different layouts of 4 subwoofers: in the corners of the room, along the front and back walls or along the perimeter of the room
I wired up 2 front sub channels and power outlets in the front of the room for that purpose before the drywall went up, and I might go that way in the future, but with only 2 they sound better in the back. When I tried them up front I had a bad null in the center seat
If you join Tony's discord, I have a build thread that tells all. Also the links for the LEDs and controllers are in the description and will take you right to the same place I got them.
Is there a link / brand of the hexagon panels you used? I see 12" panels on Amazon, but these look larger. Perhaps you sourced material and cut them? Thanks
Sorry for the long delay, I made them all myself. Most of them are cut from rigid foam insulation panels, with pva primer with fire retardant mixed in, then painted in "dark secret" from Behr. The rest are either MDF, or thin plywood with acoustic foam glued to them. So bad news, you can't buy them.
With over 100 effects, it's pretty easy to find ones that aren't very distracting, like during the Lord of the Rings clip, I used one that doesn't change at all. They can be set up to be very slow, very dim, or completely static. I only used bright ones for demonstration purposes. I usually use a slow red Ripple effect when watching movies and shows, which doesn't distract at all
This is prob one of the BEST home theaters I have seen fabricated. Very amazing. I looked on DIY home theaters channel and did not see how the wiring of this LED wall array was accomplished. It says that connecting to one would sync them all, but that does not make sense if these were seemingly turned on randomly, like in the electric storm mode? Is there any directions or guide that he used so I could understand this?
If you join Tony's discord, I have a build thread that explains things a bit better. So the controllers are synced together as such that they change effects, colors, brightness, speed and intensity together, but the effects that rely on RNG still produce different looks, even within segments on the same node. That effect, Lightning, is random, which basically works like each segment has a mind of its own, while obeying the commands of the user for brightness color etc.
Quick question, Without me doing research.... What wire is needed to do the GIY bass transducers in the seats? 2 conductor, or can you split it off of coaxial? Does that just tie into your sub channel? Asking for a friend... :)
The transducers wire up like any other speaker, I used 14ga wire. The Dayton Audio amplifier uses the subwoofers channel with a splitter just like you said
I haven't yet, that's in the plans. In the settings of WLED there are several options for cloning or integrating different control systems, including naming nodes as Alexa devices
And he has movie theater salt shakers where do people find this stuff 🤔 even if i cant make a full movie theater id still love that experience in my home
Most people are so desperate to hear audio come from above that they don't even realise when listening to anything other than Dolby Atmos content with the height channels on, it actually messes up the soundstage! Mind you, you can't blame them especially when they keep being told Dolby Atmos is the next best thing to sliced bread.
My receiver automatically switches between audio content, so if it's not atmos, it doesn't use the speakers, unless I override it. I'll say, it's subtle enough that you don't really notice, with the timbre matched speakers, it just seems right. But if you listen to some new music that's mixed in atmos, it really is a different experience
Hey Tony, I was wondering if I can email you. I want to pull the trigger on the zidoo z1000 pro but I’ve never had a media player like that and I need help getting it setup and anything else I need to purchase for it. Your help would be greatly appreciated, thx
Hi Ryan, it's a little hard for me to give one on one help but if you join the Discord server, you may catch me online and I'll do what I can to help - lots of Zidoo users on my server so you will likely get some answers for sure!
@@BuildMontage I just need to know what other equipment I need to buy. I’m not buying a nas, was going to buy a hard drive for player itself to store movies on, am I thinking correct on that? And one of your videos I watched you said a ripper is also needed. I subscribe to your channel and enjoy all your videos man. I would really like a zidoo for my movie collection, movies is all I will use it for
So, it isn't really in the video because there's too much to cover already, but the front left corner is actually a door to the outside. Building code requires 2 exits, so I couldn't block that. Plus, the 12' ceiling really changes the perceived size of the room, and it's worth having the stairs especially after I got the kegerator under them
Also, the surrounds are still in the correct spot. 90° from the center position, which is 14' back from the screen. The right surround has a hexagon shaped cover, so you can't tell. Thats also why the railing on the stairs is like it is, acoustically transparent for the right surround. It's 7.2.4 after all
@@diyhometheater4199 the room is over 20' deep though, i'd just have had stairs to the other exit and not had stairs right by your head. you could have also sloped the room and kept much of the ceiling height, it would just be to get the seats high enough where your ears are above the stairway. also since the work is all DIY you could have just ignored code for that, but, again with the depth having stairs to that exit would have been fine. either way, room looks great enjoy
@@commanderrussels2612 maybe it's not clear enough in the video, if you join the discord I have a build thread that might make more sense? All the speakers are on the proper plane, and correct angles for a 7.2.4 dolby atmos setup. The problem you're talking about does not exist in this room. All 7 ear level speakers are where they are supposed to be. The black hexagon tile above the 3rd step is the right surround speaker. The listening position is back far enough not to be blocked by the stairs. And the other exit goes outside, you're right I could ignore code, but I did want to be safe just in case my wiring catches the house on fire 🔥
tiny speakers for such a big room. I would want bigger full sized full frequency ranged speakers. Doesnt have to be expensive. There are plenty of larger speakers that are affordable and sound good.
You know, you can do a lot with $100. 5m of Leds and a controller is about $25, a sheet of MDF is $60, use USB charger to power the lights and a little paint, and you could make some neat looking stuff
@DIY home theater yeah I have 7.2.2 but moved for the 4th time in 3 yrs, have some Phillips Hue stuff, just hadn't gotten time again to get my life together while raising 2 kids by myself 👌🏽. Maybe someday soon.
@@diyhometheater4199 Considering it takes 20 minutes and about $30 to do some screen masks, you'd think a must-have basic like screen masks would be easy, compared to what you've already done with the room. Why even bother with the other stuff, when your picture isn't even framed in properly for best visual results? Especially when masks are one of the cheapest and easiest things to do in a HT.
@@DarthHater100 I guess I just don't care that much. It looks fine without them. Is it really a must have basic, if I don't have and nobody noticed till now?
Hi.. fantastic story, however… Could you please read your notes more slowly? In watching this video your ‘rushed’ presentation was a little uncomfortable to listen to. 😮😊
Understood, though I am a subscriber and haven’t noticed it before. I signed onto Discord to find the link to Johns ‘how to’ videos but was unable to find them, is there a link you could attach please?
I appreciate all the hard work but it's not my taste. The stairs ruin it for me, and as cool as the retro space-age walls are, they are a distraction and I'd have them turned off most of the time, so what's the point? The star ceiling is great, as is the DIY spandex screen. No doubt the kids have a blast in there.
There are over 100 different effects, some very subtle, and not distracting. The point is to look neat, to make you feel like you're in a place that is somehow outside the normal world, and they are awesome when listening to music and gaming. Sometimes I just sit in there for hours listening to music, and it feels like I'm in a movie. As for the stairs they were unavoidable, and all the speakers are properly positioned and on axis, so when the lights are down and the movie is on, you don't know they are there.

Hats off to John for his amazing skills, his amazing room and I also like his shirt 👍 Thank you for sharing
Lol thats my favorite shirt
WLED and DIY for the win! This room would be great for xlights syncing to on screen visuals too as a custom demo of the room
Yeah I'll probably experiment with that some in the future, I know that wled can clone Phillips Hue lights and be integrated with that system. One of the big ideas I had when building this was to make the left wall a giant graphic EQ, because I often just listen to music in the room.
@@diyhometheater4199 lol. I'm doing the same thing. I'm installing in soffit perimiter and behind screen but the main eq effects will be vertical on a fireplace in the room. I need to jump back on discord and look at your star ceiling build too
@@AussieInSeattle I put extra wiring in the center of the front and rear walls as well in case I want to run lights around the screen, diffuser, or projector mount
Incredible!! I wish I could hire John as a consultant.
Very nice set-up especially the lighting set-up it looks great and also I like his AV rack because I like the power amp he is using they very good power amp. Thank you for showing your set-up. CHEERS
Thanks! I was worried cause a lot of folks have these fancy racks that look way better, but the budget wouldn't allow that. The shelves are mdf and on track shelving from a big box store mounted backwards so you can't see them
Wow.. 🔥...who is this guy Jon? He must be a God of theater's...hope he is not wasting his time working on the RR...he should be doing this for a living...mad skillz...I need to contact him about doing a room for me...VA ehh..hmm..he might not be far from me.. 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I think John has a few people's attention thats for sure!
hi john, first of all congratulations for the wonderful work. I'd like to know how you made the lighting under the honeycombs, and where did you get the material. Thank you
Links for stuff is in the description of the video, the material I used for most was 3/4 xps rigid foam insulation, with a few made out of MDF and the acoustic tiles were thin plywood.
Also, if you join Tony's discord, I have a build thread in there that should explain everything
Oh man! I saw your theater in Discord last week...and now I get to see it on a Build Montage full video tour??? My lucky night!
I am absolutely excited to see someone using the LG hu810p!!
This is a unicorn that hasn't gotten the praise it deserves..
I love this room!! ❤️❤️❤️
I would like to know if John has his projector calibrated?
No, I need to get it calibrated, or pull the trigger on a good sensor. I do love the projector even though the black levels aren't the best. The colors are crazy vibrant
@@diyhometheater4199 I have spent most of last year in the AVS forum and was able to pull together some close to perfect settings.
I used settings from many users post on the forum that had calibration done. So my current settings will put your color at almost reference and the black level will be at least 40% better.
The way I got my black level on point was a negative gain gray screen.
@@kman9387 what setting are you using? I'd love to try them out
@@diyhometheater4199 I keep posting the settings for you but someone seems to be deleting them 🤷
@@diyhometheater4199 I just posted a comment on your channel with the settings info.
Would like to know how to control the addressable leds left and right to match on-screen color....
I think John has a channel you can look at which I linked in the description.
Absolutely blown away by this - incredible job!
I'm curious which LEDs and controllers you used for this project?
It's all in the description of the video :)
If you join Tony's discord, I have a build thread that tells all. Also the links for the LEDs and controllers are in the description and will take you right to the same place I got them.
Any feedback on those ceiling speakers?? Are they good speakers
I think they are, they don't come into play as often as one might think. When they do it's hard to tell, the transition is pretty seamless
Tony you look like you are getting into shape. Keep going brother, looking great
Thanks mate, working hard at it. I have goals to get down before I go to ISE next year!!
@@BuildMontage Definitely noticeable. Face looks thinner. Belly is down. Arms looking more toned. Keep at it Tony❤🔥🔥💪💪👊👊
Hi does John has a website or uses a forum where he posted a diary how he built his theatre ?
I've got a build thread on Tony's discord, and I'm going to make a bunch of build videos at some point soon
Wow....
Is there a link / brand of the hexagon panels you used? I see 12" panels on Amazon, but these look larger. Perhaps you sourced material and cut them? Thanks
Yes, if you watch the video it explains how he made these. Maybe you missed that part of the video?
@@BuildMontage thanks. I watched it twice thinking I may have. Ur reply is very much appreciated. Viewing number 3 tomorrow. Thank u
It’s all in there how he did it :)
Not a fan of distracting lights in a theater room but it does look stunning.
Can always turn them off during a movie :) But when not watching its a very cool look.
You can join my Discord server and chat to John directly :) Link in the description - send me a message and I'll put you in contact.
The Dayton Audio amplifier uses the subwoofers channel with a splitter just like you said
Hi John, how did you integrate WLED to Alexa/Google voice control?
I haven't yet, that's in the plans. In the settings of WLED there are several options for cloning or integrating different control systems, including naming nodes as Alexa devices
@@diyhometheater4199 Thanks, I'm looking into Home Assistant.
All that's missing is a high end Gaming PC in there.
It's on his list - I even mentioned it in the video :)
You're right about that! And some nicer seats. And automation, power conditioner, projector calibration, PS5, so on and so on. . .
And he has movie theater salt shakers where do people find this stuff 🤔 even if i cant make a full movie theater id still love that experience in my home
My wife found the salt shaker, and the flavacol salt. Great northern popcorn machine. You can do it!

I would really like a zidoo for my movie collection, movies is all I will use it for
why not just float the floor so there aren't giant stairs where your surrounds are supposed to be? Impressive DIY work though!
@@diyhometheater4199 gotcha. cool!
tiny speakers for such a big room. I would want bigger full sized full frequency ranged speakers. Doesnt have to be expensive. There are plenty of larger speakers that are affordable and sound good.

Wow, I feel useless after seeing all this, i wish I had time and money or a wife to watch my kids a bit while I took on projects like this.
All that work and no screen masks? I just don't get it.
I might make some later, I mostly watch 16x9 content and games
That's my style I guess - I have experiemented and if I go slower, people click off.. its sad reality of the modern viewer.
Understood, though I am a subscriber and haven’t noticed it before. I signed onto Discord to find the link to Johns ‘how to’ videos but was unable to find them, is there a link you could attach please?

@@BuildMontage ok done 😎
Hello
hello!
Oh hai!
QneLaMPL
Love the great use of space. John, you got skills, no doubt.
