If you are a Cristian and a literature lover, I think you have found a book that will have a profound affect on your life. It is an exciting read, as well as being quite eye-opening about Japanese history.

Your review of The Samurai brought me here. Mr. Endo seems a genius.

Hello Deb! I much preferred The Samurai to Silence, there's more tension and suspense. Endo, was quite an amazing writer, and his oddly unique perspective, Japanese-Catholic is not something I have ever come across in other literature.

I am a Christian and I first saw the movie “Silence” 2016 by director Martin Scorsese and I was deeply moved. I tried to put myself in the shoes of Padre Rodrigues and asked myself, what would I do in those circumstances? The movie is a masterpiece! Then I read the book. The book differs in some areas from the movie but over all the book is so so great! The introduction and the end notes are very important to read as part of the story because they provide details and historical information that, although you must read carefully, there are hopeful signs that are of great satisfaction to the conclusions made by myself as the reader. Thank you so much for your review.

Thank-you for the wonderful comment. I was worried about this video because I wanted to do the book some justice. It is truly a great novel, and gives some deep perspective into a time and a culture that are long gone from today's world.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. My videos are mostly off the top of my head, but I am glad if you think I've done a good job!
      Thanks again!

Another great review. And another book that the local library has.
The Christian thing is no problem if the book is well-written.

Thanks Stefan! I'm glad you feel that way. I find it about the writing, that peculiar voice a real artist has. The novel doesn't even have to be about anything in particular (next week review!), as long as the writing is engaging.

The Christian thing isn't a deterrent for me. However, I have PTSD from some violence I witnessed some years ago and I struggle with scenes of violence and torture. I had trouble finishing The Feast of the Goat by Mario Vargas Llosa for the same reason, so while I have this book, I am hesitant to read it.

Considering what you've said, it might be difficult. There are a few intense scenes that are quite harrowing.
