Clip from 1971 film. The great welsh actress (and former wife of Rex Harrison) reveals her 'secret' to Gene Hackman. Gene won an Oscar the next year; Rachel died in 1980.
Like so many, drink and depression for feeling she was not good enough killed her. Rachel Roberts is captivating and she steels each scene. Long live Rachel Roberts movies. R.I.P old friend.
Malcolm McDowell speaks very fondly of Rachel in the commentary on "O, Lucky Man !" I was shocked to learn that she had committed suicide. Very tragic. What a superb actress and quite an attractive woman. Two of my other favorite films she appeared in were "Saturday Night, Sunday Morning" with a very young Albert Finney, and "Murder on the Orient Express". If you haven't seen them, check them out.
Yes it is so true. She was on the verge of a comeback in films at the time of her death. She did Foul Play, When A Stranger Calls, and she won a BAFTA for Yanks. She was very frail in person. I met her about a year before she passed when she starred on Broadway in Once a Catholic with Peggy Cass.
The pages from her diary in her biography make for horrific reading. She died by suicide in her fifties, in a manner which must have been appallingly painful. If ever there was a tortured soul, Rachel |Roberts was one of the most unluckiest. The last ten years of her life were pure punishment, a tortured mind and the waste of a fine actress. Hopefully she's at peace now.
I was going to finish but I got called away for a press conference. Somewhere, I have a backstage photo from Opening Night of myself, Peg Cass, Rachel, Juliet Mills, and Diana Rigg. After the play, she returned to LA and her deep depressions and demons. If you ever get a chance, read the book of her journals "No Bells on Sunday" and get an insight to this great actress.
@JerseySurvivor ...I'm currently reading 'No Bells On Sunday' I've always loved Rachel Roberts...I thought she was really sexy in 'Saturday Night Sunday Morning'....Poor thing...what a waste...Great actress. She shouldn't have been so insecure about her looks either, I thought she was gorgeous. She had a real earthy sensual vibe...Welsh women rock !!
Why is this Brilliant Actress Largly Forgotten? We talk about Richard Burton and Anthoney Hopkins but never about Rachael Roberts. Hugh Griffiths is another Welshman{that comes to mind}. Rachel Roberts was such a Wonderfull Actress its a Shame she never won an Oscar.
Hugh Griffiths........I don't know who remembers him now, but I'll never forget him. Loved the man. Every actor who worked with MR Griffiths had loads of hilarious accounts of his antics. It wasn't that he was rarely drunk.........he was rarely sober! No more characters like old Hugh these days!
I was told by many even her ex husband Rex Harrison. Whom I believe she committed suicide over.he asked me to dance on the Queen Mary on a trip from my England to New York .He said I was the image of her voice and laugh also. Many of her best friends Hollywood said the same.one give me her book and yesi she some resemblance.Pity she died so tragically .I would have loved to have met her.A fine actress. I was also actress and you can see me as a contestant on the re runs of the great game show Matchgame.judge the likeness for yourselves . R.I.P Rachel .
Everyone speaks of her suicide - but there was great speculation at the time that she may have been murdered! I still believe it’s somewhat of a grey area...
No way ..it really was suicide. I met desr friends of hers who knew how depressed she was after she plunged into Alcoholism and never recovered from her love for Rex Harrison ironically she used to go OFTEN to meditate in the little park behind my British Cafe on Robertson Blvd in West Hollywood.I think she may have killed herself there.Sucj a tradgedy...
@@nintendy I'm sorry but unless someone physically held her down, rammed a funnel down her throat and managed to get the barbiturates and weedkiller in that way, your claims lack any foundation. You need to understand, she died from an overdose, not from falling through the window...the cuts found on her were nowhere near serious enough to cause that level of blood loss.
@@rampageclover9788 Where do you get the ‘claim’ thing from? I never claimed anything! Merely being open-minded. I am not a closed-minded person. In any case, this is a bit of a pointless conversation, as I (can’t speak for you) certainly wasn’t there... I leave it at that - go on talking to yourself if you must - but nobody is listening! 🙂
Rachael Roberts was a phenomenal actress, such a tragic life away from the cameras.

I love this actress. So talented, so beautiful, so charismatic.

She is someone you just want to hug and not let go. She was so wonderful. Melinda Cordell was another one like her. Rachel was so wonderful

sounded like her soul was tortured by an unhealthy ego
Barbiturates chased down with weed killer
One of Britain’s finest actresses; they don’t make them like that anymore...
Judy Dench
Maggie Smith
Helen Miren
Vanessa Redgrave
Julie Andrews
Charlotte Rampling
Imelda Staunton
Leslie Manville
Sally Hawkins
@@kprieto2655 But they're all very repetitive...

It's interesting to note that her best friend and actress Jill Bennett also committed suicide exactly ten years later - and at almost the same age!
I will always remember her in This Sporting Life; those brutal scenes with Richard Harris. She had a gift for grueling conversations, as we see here.

Unless someone forced her to take barbiturates with weed killer, I very much doubt it
@@rampageclover9788 Depends very much how look at it; murders have been happening for decades that are made to look like suicide!
