I also found out that since I've bought a big chest freezer, I waste almost zero food, because what you don't use you can freeze for later, you save money next time you need it and you don't feel bad for throwing anything away. Also, when a hard time comes, you are able to use this storage and survive on a smaller budget for a while. This kid of "food insurance" - freezing plus buying in bulk - is my greatest discovery this year, and it's also thanks to the channels like this.

I have always had anxiety. I watch so many people but I love watching you and Becky from Acre Homestead because I guess you both always embrace the fact you aren't wonder woman and can't do everything yourself and if something slips through the cracks that's ok. You've both given me the courage to create a garden about 10x what I've had in the past. I've also found such joy in gardening now that I just never had before. So thank you for keeping it real and for just being such a calm, positive and genuine person. I really love that you treat yourself with such love and kindness, it's definitely a weakness for me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

My advice unfollow the people that do give you anxiety. We have to give it all to God can be so hard but following or adding in the devil that works through people feeding more fear is not good for us or our souls. I pray that everyone you find on you tube is healthy for the soul mind and home. Your so right they keep it real and calm.

We got a great deal from a local farmer on tomatoes. He was selling huge, beautiful slicers 3 for $1. We got approx 50 lbs for $18. I cored them and put them in the freezer. I like doing that because the skin slips right off when they thaw. I'm mostly going to make basic tomato sauce and salsa. If our tomatoes & peppers keep coming in or we get some more from him, it'll be a rotel type project. Our tomatoes keep getting attacked by those ugly bugs that puncture little holes and drink the inside, I can't remember the name. One thing about the slicers is that I will be draining a lot of the juice & canning it rather than letting it evaporate. The skins will be dehydrated. We are having to really factor in fuel costs for farm produce. Happy canning and planning yall! We will be planning our fall garden soon. Our first isn't until around Thanksgiving at the earliest. Hopefully we'll still be getting some tomatoes too.

    • @loritanner4478
      @loritanner4478 2 года назад +1

2 years ago I discovered that I don't have to peel and deseed my tomatoes. I froze them whole, minus the core. Then I thaw them and put them in my nesco roaster and heat them up. Then I put them in my vitamix and grind them up, peel, seeds and all. Then I use that to make my sauces, ketchup etc. So much easier than all that work I used to do.

Plant some sun flower near your tomatoes . Plant them at safe distance from corn ( yours or your neighbour's). You'll get rid of your tomatoe bugs problem. Look for companion planting for more info.

Jessica, these days we must all think outside the box and stay on top of costs. It takes a lot of time and energy to compare and justify. I lived on the farm in the recession of the
80’s and worked in the city. It was a challenge and I found that planning was the key but auto pilot was not an option; you have to stay on top of world events and revisit the plan over and over. You have got a great system. I survived that downturn so can encourage you that there is hope this too shall pass. It is simply getting through it. You are doing all you can to do the best you can. I love watching your family working together to keep it together. Take care of yourself. Thanks for sharing.

I realize this is an older video however I really wanted to comment I love Aldi! We have been shopping there since 1992 I don't know when they opened but that is when a store opened in our area. To this day I love their products. Their bread is my favorite and we find many deals to help our food costs. This year I started canning again, we put up 56 quarts of green beans, 12 pints of tomato sauce and many quarts of salsa
We live in Indiana and I will be planting broccoli and cabbage and cauliflower soon. We are very fortunate our local farm store does bring in plants. I have learned a lot from your channel even though I'm 60 yrs old
We homescholled our 2 daughters when it wasn't as popular as today and they both are RNs so I guess we did OK

I'm definitely taking advantage of a fall garden since rabbits have mowed down my beans and peas. I haven't even been successful with lettuces in spring/summer since my yard is 100% sun so I grow those in the fall. First time I'll be attempting brasicas though so I'm excited for that.
I've broken up my Azure orders as well starting this past January. I now only order about every 3-4 months. I've been concerned about their costs increasing due to fuel (I've see some price increases at Azure too). Luckily my drop is actually closer than most of the grocery stores I go to but it's still a little bit of a drive. I don't order produce very often from Azure (besides citrus) so I don't have to worry about trying to order seasonal produce. I mainly stick to grains and beans and some misc items we enjoy from them.
I've had some sticker shock from Aldi as well not to mention the shelves are so depleted at Aldi.

I’m doing a fall garden this year too, and am so excited to learn new skills. Right now, I’m sitting on the porch swing, preparing green beans to can today. Growing up my parents - with us 8 kids - would be able to fill our cellar with more potatoes than we could grow by asking permission of the potato farmers. I would like to know more about keeping some of the plants in the ground I remember way back when I was little and that was Lord 60 years ago that Grandma and Grandpa used to keep carrots and parsnips for sure in the ground and I've been trying to find out more about this and haven't found much information. If you have information or want to do a video about this I would absolutely love it. I am in a poor season of my life at 68 and not extremely healthy this year and I hate it have had to do more store can shopping than anything else. My boys are working too hard outside the home working too many hours to do very much at all around the house and I understand that they work hard they are tired. Mostly just want to be fed go relax for an hour get as much sleep as they're allowed and get back to work. It has been an interesting year or two here. And I know you have had those too. Different reasons but very real reasons on all fronts not just excuses. Thank you for all you do as much as I hate to say it I think you maybe wanting to do your cost comparisons about once a month or maybe just a little more. What kind of cleaning supplies do you get at Sam's club? I have never shopped at Sam's and I'm wondering what I'm missing 😁 I make laundry soap (borax, washing soda, laundry bar), available in multiple places, dish soap, toilet paper, and Dr bronners from Azure standard, shampoo/conditioner/body wash/deodorant grocery outlet or Marshalls (for the more natural type), charcoal toothpaste, 99 cents store, vinegar for cleaning at whatever grocery store, sal suds and compostable trash and doggie poop bags from Amazon. Thank you for posting Jessica. Blessings, -Kate

The other thing about Azure is that they add 6.5% for shipping, at least for my drop. That's in addition to whatever it costs for travel to the drop.

How I wish we had access to Aldi and Azure. My closest Azure pickup location is 2 1/2 hours away over three mountain passes. I have gotten into the habit of going online and checking prices at the various stores I do have access to when I plan my shopping. I am able to get bulk goods from a local Mennonite store at a good price.

Love aldi, we have no discount stores here in maine with healthy/organic products. Once in a while there might be some things at dollar tree

You should look into having your house as a drop point for Azure for you and your neighbors. I believe the total of all your orders has to be $2000 but of you have enough people that shouldn't be too hard and then you will save on gas.

Sam’s Club membership plus has free shipping. Costco the same. I live near a Sam’s, Costco, Walmart, Aldi all very close. I order all my Sam’s, Costco and sometimes Walmart. While I admire this cost counting, seems for 4 or 5cents different it would not be worth the time weekly. Maybe monthly or by monthly? Be sure and read articles suggesting things not to buy at Aldi’s. I did a lot of research on their dairy, meat and bread.
I really enjoy watching and learning from you! Thanks for sharing!

It's only four of five cents different per ounce. Most items are bought by the pound, so those cents add up to dollars, especially when you purchase hundreds of pounds of food a month.

Hello, I am in need of some advice. I began canning about a year ago. I
followed all the rules or so I thought... It has come to my attention
that rather then letting it boil and then vent steam for several
minutes before placing the weight on the caner, what was coming out was
air not steam.... My expertise in the difference between air and steam
appears that it was not quite correct. So I have been canning for a
year Beef Stew, Spaghetti Sauce, hamburger, pork roast with potato's and
carots... Every thing had meat in it so it all received the full 90
minutes and I did not start the 90 minute time till the 10 weight was...
well plainly shaking more then it was required to do to verify 10
pounds of pressure.... So all received its full time and full
pressure... I have just learned that air in the caner rather than
steam will not be quite as hot at least for a short period of time maybe
at the beginning of the canning process..... I have loved the canning
thing and have like 400 quarts of stuff... Do I have to throw it all
out.... is there anyway I can make sure the botulism poison is not
there before I eat it. What do you suggest....Please let me know and
    Much Thanks For your time....

Excellent advice. One thing to think about: some of those "Days to Maturity" numbers are days from TRANSPLANT, not from initial seeding and need a bit more time.

Don’t forget Target. I have found great deals on store brand organic foods there. We get the organic expresso whole bean there, they also have ground. I also get the marinara and spagetti sauces ( organic) and organic salsas there.

If you put items in your cart on Amazon, you'll get alerts if the prices change. That can keep you from having to continually check.

Question....Did you figure gas use for getting each item from each store or drop spot.
Because what your saving in price of grocery items may cost you more if your only calculate that.
And you must also calculate the wear and maintenance of your vehicle.
So you have a few more things to consider.🤔
    Good luck.
    Love your videos and family.

Thank you for sharing, this was extremely informative! Lots of very good ideas, I shop at Aldi, as we have found they have less price hiking as other stores, we have 3 little garden areas, and are excited to be getting harvest already....green beans so far, but our cucumbers are close, as well as our tomatoes. I can and freeze my produce, and will hopefully be able to keep up. 😁Thank you again for this video!!❤️

Question for you: I’m trying to learn to garden. How do you produce so much veggies? Do you use fertilizer? Do you have a plan in case fertilizer is not available anymore? And do you add gardening costs to your grocery budget? Thx!

We all need to walk close to the Lord as we make the difficult decisions necessary to move forward. Our closest Azure Standard order drop point is 2 hours into a city with traffic on a crowded highway. I just don't want to do it. I am not going to make another commitment and host a drop site.
