Brother Jared….how blessed I feel to be one of your Unshaken students…these lessons have helped my understanding in a remarkable way. Having fallen away from the church for 19 years…I look back six years ago to my realizing that I truly had fallen off the ladder. Now, in the light of repentance, and an intentional devotion to the Lords example..the new heart within me..at 70…is my most cherished possession. One rung at a time, one prayer at a time, each day at a time with a perfect brightness of hope….Thank you for your dedicated faith…this is clearly part of this light…Keep up the good work❤️😇 David

Thank you for not skipping over Dinah’s story. It deserves to be told, and shared. It’s included in the Bible for a reason. Too many women understand this heartache. Too many women within the church deal with this, and often in silence. So, Thank you.

Brother Halverson I have felt that when I have attended the 12 step ARP program that at times it is more sacred than being in the temple. There is such empathy towards others that you can't help but realize that you come to truly see the people therefore as God sees them and gain an understanding of what Christlike love is!

The twelve steps are steps of repentance and humility…essential qualities of the Lord. As a recovering alcoholic, I implement these everyday…one day at a time…seeking Gods merciful wisdom….Thank you for your insightful comment 😇👍

I can't thank you enough for the last couple of lessons. I have been going through some severe trials the past year, and your lessons have helped me tremendously; particularly the last two. Your teachings about how, like Abraham, our trials are fitted just for us and how we are climbing nearer to God through these trials have helped me through. I remember a brother from my Young Single Adult Ward, who share this thought during his Testimony, regarding his Service Mission.
He came to realize that when we perform Ordinances like Baptism, the Sacrament, or performing work in the Temple, We Make Covenants.
But as we serve others inside or outside our callings, we are Keeping our Covenants!
Thank you for helping me notice things within the text that we might not already see. I think there are times when I am like Rebecca and I can see the possibilities for blessing, even if I don't know how it will quite work out. Other times, I can be like Isaac and have tunnel vision for how things should be. Again, I can be like Esau, frustrated and stubborn. Other times, needing reassurance from Family, Friends, and Members that all will work out and that God is aware of me, much like Jacob.
Thank you again for the Spirit that you bring and additional perspectives from the Scriptures and your personal history. 🙂❤

I found my testimony of a personal Christ in a women’s shelter. I am so very grateful to this day that I had to run from an ex because it brought me into the arms of my beautiful Savior. While in the shelter late at night I would listen to this Christian CD (Selah) a friend had given it to me shortly before I left my ex. My ex had threatened to kill me as soon as he found me and kill me and my two young sons and then turn the gun on himself. I knew what this man was capable of and I was beyond terrified. I put all of my fears into my prayers and I would plead with God and bawl my eyes out. After praying one night I laid back down and there was a song on the CD called Hiding Place I’d never heard. It was the words in that song and the peace that came over me that let me know that my prayers had been heard and I knew from that night on we would be okay. it’s been 17 years since that night.

I don't think there is any real evidence that she wasn't loving in the beginning. I think that Rachel had to learn to be more loving and not jealous. It was probably rough for Rachel having to share her husband after being tricked by her father and not getting kids for so long, but at least she had the love of her husband. That should have been enough. We also don't know if it even was rough for Rachel, she was willing fro five him up for a plant and she told him she'd rather die without children than just live with him without any. That doesn't sound like a woman who was as madly in love as Jacob was. I think Leah and Rachel were both pit against each other by their somewhat well meaning father and both behaved pretty badly but I don't think the playing field was level at all for Leah, she got a very raw deal. When it says in the scripture she was unloved, I'm pretty sure it means that he was not in love with her, he loves her but was not in love with her and that had to of been really rough.

Thank you so much for all the time you spend sharing your heart and your wisdom and understanding in down to earth, ordinary ways that make the gospel more bite-sized and easy to apply in my life. You are an incredibly humble person. And I know you don't like hearing that, because you're...humble. But it is so refreshing to see this, because it seems like humility is one of the main things lacking in the world right now. Humility could transform each individual, then the world. You are so great about modeling what it is to seek true understanding of your "neighbor", and to not assume ill intent behind actions you may perceive as a slight. You aren't looking to go on the defense when faced with opposition. Instead, you seem to say, "Can you help me understand how you feel?" to those who see things differently.
Your lessons are great. Not only are they full of context (which I REALLY enjoy), but the real life applicability is front and center, and doesn't take a backseat to the history of the scripture (which, again, I really appreciate, and may be occasionally heavy handed with in my lessons). I feel like I am having a faith transition at this point in life. Sometimes I wonder if it will carry me away from the church, which I hope doesn't happen, because I have found so much growth and healing and truth here. But every time I turn on your episodes, you convey something that reaffirms to me that even with a transition, I still have a place in the church. Thank you for that.

I have been so inspired by your video lessons Brother Halverson. Thank you for sharing your light - the light that you have received from God. I have been especially enlightened by your description of the journey of faith. Every journey needs a soundtrack, and for one as great as each individual’s faith journey, only an epic selection of songs will do. Here is my proposed song list.
    Creation (Simple):
I am a Child of God
    Then
    Rainbow Connection (Kermit the Frog)
    Fall (Complex):
    Dark Side (Kelly Clarkson)
    Then
    Even When (Hilary Weeks)
    Atonement (Simple):
    Write Your Story (Francesca Battistelli)
    Then
    How Great Thou Art
There are many Esther’s whom God is preparing for the last days - “for such a time as this.” I know you are one. I pray that the Lord keep uplifting you and that you keep sharing your light and knowledge from Him.

Old love really is the best. Congrats on 23 years. My husband and I are 26 on 3/23.
As for old love, a few years ago we were at a country music concert/show (just some local bands (East Texas). There were 3 types of couples on the dance floor. The awkward new relationships who tended to circle around the edges dancing stiffly. The middle aged couple who you could tell were familiar with each other and danced as bonded partners.
And then this one older couple. At least early 80's. Every dance he bowed and asked for her hand to dance with him. I'm sure they didn't need music either. And when they danced, they became 1 on that floor. You couldn't tell where one ended and the other began. Just that perfectly in step/tune with each other. And when the song ended and it was time to sit and catch their breath for the next one he would lead her back to her seat and bow to her and thank her for dancing with him.
I can't wait for the rest of forever with my husband.

I was just introduced to your videos. I’m so touched and as you shared about your son teaching in addiction recovery I wanted to share with you….
I remember the moment that I had in a alcoholics anonymous meeting as I sat there mad that I had to be there for my own addiction I was comparing myself to them, saying that I am not like them! The Holy Ghost whispered to me right then “ in these rooms they get to know Me!” That moment I was changed and recovery became a very real journey with God. He definitely comes to where we are…even if it’s an Alano Club in downtown San Diego!
    Thank you!!
    God bless!

Br Halverson, thank you for your time and preparation in making these scriptures come alive to us. To see the struggles and wrestling Jacob had with all the various opposition he had in his life. How he trusted in his God and Savior for his renewal. My parents who were both deaf from early childhood due to illness had a simple faith in the Lord and his promises. He taught by precept and example to the best of his ability. I look at their faith, their lives, and their hopes for us. Just as Jacob ( Israel) did for his family. He trusted in God that he would keep his promises if he did all he could to follow his commandments and instructions. We are all climbing that ladder to the Savior one rung at a time. Thank you for this hope.

At 1:18.00 where Brother Halverson begins by speaking about trials... this old thought came to mind which I have always LOVED... Think of an old clothes line: "If all our problems were hung on a line, You'd choose yours, and I'd choose mine"... in other words, we don't always see others struggles. Sometimes they remain hidden in the "laundry room"... but put them all out on a clothes line and they become VISIBLE to EVERYONE... it's then that we get some perspective and realize that our trials are individual to us and we may not wish to have the "trials" of another. Especially when we realize that we may not have the skill set to deal with their trials... but we DO have the skill set to deal with our own personal trials!

I have never forgotten the parable of the crystal stairs in your uncles book, “The way back to heaven,” or Avraham Gileadis insight of this ladder in “Isaiah decoded.” I’m excited to add your incredible perspective to my understanding.

I always interpreted "tender eyed" as being easily brought to tears. Sensitive, emotional, or possibly struggling with depression. Leah may have been lovely, but lacked the confidence and strength that Rachel carried herself wth.

I thought it might of had to do with her soul, the eyes are the window of the soul, so tender eyes may have meant she was kinder or more compassionate, sensitive, or vulnerable. We will never know what it really meant.

I’m teaching genetics to my biology students right now, and to get spotted/speckled cattle, you need to have either at least one parent that is spotted/speckled, or you can have two differently solid-colored parents.
As far as I can tell from these scriptures, Jacob didn’t have much in the way of diversity (no white, no brown, no spotted), so it’s likely that the only way for him to get spotted/speckled cattle would be through mutation. Mutations are common, but random, so getting the right mutation when you want it (especially in each individual organism) is nothing short of miraculous, suggesting that Jacob had to really trust that God would provide the thing he desired.

It's interesting to me that so many of life's basic principles are so woven into and throughout the book of Genesis. of course they should be as it's the foundation of all humanity upon the earth. I also love how you employ your talent in storytelling to weave them so masterfully into your presentation. We have so much to learn about how Comparison & Competition leads us into Criticism & Complaint. Thank you for putting the word of God into such a real life context so we can learn these things more fully.

I love all your lessons! But this one especially special to me. You tell the stories as if you were right there and know what the characters are thinking and feeling.
I have always felt a little sorry for Leah but now I understand her better because you explained the meanings of her sons name.
I like your take of the parable of the lost sheep. I also like that you said your revelation came like a two-by-four instead of a still small voice. I was always surprised that the shepherd had left the 99 to seek after the lost one. I had never thought that the sheep were"thinking" like the righteous brother who stayed home. Disapproving and resentful of the way their father attitude! I like how you were one of 99 until Jesus asked you to name some of the 98! There is only one truly righteous Son and God sent Him so the others could return. I will have to think some more about what I do for God. Am I appeasing God so I can earn my forgiveness or am I do I do good to thank Him for His atonement? I like thinking of Esua being a forgiving older brother and Jacob in the role of the prodigal son. I appreciate what you said about Dinah not loosing her virtue. I wish more would think this way. I have always wondered why the woman deserve to be punish. I like your definitions of love vs. love.
I didn't appreciate how wrong premarital sex until I joined this Church. I hadn't occurred to me that is against the Abrahamic Covenant until you said so.
Words can not express what your lessons mean to me. Listening to you is as if I am reading the scriptures for the first time. I have been a member almost 55 years and graduated from Institute. I read all of Br. Skousen's books about the Old Testament. So this not my first time studying the Old Testament. (Or Studying any of scriptures.) Your insights have been taught me much. But more than this my relationship with my Savior is becoming more special and I feel closer to Him now than I ever did!

      Dear Elizabeth.
Besides being careful not to have sex before marriage (premarital sex), we also have to be careful not to have sex at all outside of the bonds of holy matrimony (God's Law/New Covenant) and legality (the law of the land). So that covers premarital, extramarital and postmarital sex. Also intramarital sex abuse and also any and all forms and degrees of perverted sexual activity (immoral sexuality/sexual immorality) within marriage.
So, premarital sex is sex before marriage.
Extramarital sex speaks specifically of sex with anyone you are not married to while you are married to someone else.
And postmarital sex which is sex after marriage has ended.
"Extramarital affairs", more broadly speaking, are precisely those - affairs ie activities/actions outside (extra) of marriage (marital). Or, in other words (iow), outside of the structure and confines of marriage and especially of holy matrimony (marriage God's way) and the latter mentioned means that both husband and wife honor their marriage covenant and vows with complete fidelity ie faithfulness to each other instead of looking to or seeking for sources of joy etc outside of marriage and also that they show great respect and reverence to each other within their marriage by loving instead of hating or even being indifferent to each other; by being kind instead of unkind; by being charitable instead of uncharitable; by being Christlike instead of unChristlike; by being respectful or reverential instead of abusive and on and on in that vein.
I hope that all makes sense. God bless you and yours and take care.

Enduring to end IS starting over on the ladder every single day. Have faith, repent, and receive/remember ordinances. It's a never ending cycle of faith that keeps us moving up the ladder. If we stop exercising our faith repentance and partaking in ordinances, that is when we begin to fall.

I'm barely 2 minutes in and you've allowed the spirit to comfort my mother's heart. All mothers worry over their children the way Rebekah does. I liken the scripture Gen 27:46 to all, it could be stated this way.
“I am weary of my life because of the [the sinful nature of people around my children]: if [my child] take [an action that violates covenant], what good shall my life do me?”
Thank you for spending time on this verse. Thanks for helping me connect to mother Rebekah, as she and I don’t only worry about physical harm and loss of life but the spiritual death of our children.

If we are looking for a positive example of the Prodigal Son or Daughter, look no further than the reunion of Jacob and Esau.
Esau's positive response with accepting Jacob and his family is a parallel to the Reunion we find with Jesus Christ.

Highlight 00:21:20 Jacob's Ladder is the iron rod that we didn't know we needed.
When we veer off the path of the vertical iron rod, We fall back to square one. Not in punishment, but because that is the best place for us to begin again on our journey. If you realize you have messed up, don't simply go back to "endure to the end". Take that opportunity to Rediscover your faith in Jesus Christ. Seek repentance and forgiveness. We are only baptized once but you can Immerse yourself afresh in the gospel of Jesus Christ. seek confirmation from the Holy Ghost that our decisions are in line with Heavenly Father's plan. THEN, endure to the end.

I love and appreciate your lessons so much. I'm sorry we are going to have to skip chapters. Can't we make the old testament a 2 year study? I do wonder that so many commentaries spend so much time on Rebekah and Jacob "deceiving" Isaac. I believe blessings come from God and don't think He can be deceived.
