Dynamite! What a “shew!” Great to see Afro Americans dancers getting a break. The orchestra is really smoking and swinging. The Nicholas Brothers were total unique athletes and dance magicians.
I have never seen this before and this is amazing not just because of the talent, but because most of the time blacks were the last performers on the Ed Sullivan show.
Why do people always say that like it just wasn't possible to be that good back in the day! They say that bout Patsy all the time. I guess it just bothers me cuz I'm old ;)
Those guys, obviously, could dance but also sing & act as everyone could in those days & beyond. Definitely, the golden age of talent...for now. There's talent today but severely lacking as a whole bc what we celebrate as talent now was below average in those days.
From another planet.. taking nothing from greats like Fred Astaire Gene Kelly Michael Jackson Eleanor Powell Donald O'Connor but athleticism of the brothers will never be duplicated
There are two different performances that make me feel pain in my legs. 1. Watching the Tour de France riders climb the alps and 2. Watching the Nicholas brothers do those diving splits.
All live I think? It would be nice if people could just acknowledge the genius of these brothers without bringing up comments on how racialist America was claimed to be at that time. Their talent was unconditionally recognized by all fans of tap dancing of all races and their position as stars was never in dispute.
Wow. A semi-young Ed Sullivan. The Nicholas Brothers were phenomenons. Fred Astaire was a gentleman and said of these men that they were the most impressive tap dancers he'd seen along with Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. RIP Bojangles, Nicholas Bros. and Fred Astaire.
My 2cents - Sammy better overall entertainer. Nicholas brothers better dancer, Fred better at popularity with the general American population at the time
Fred Astaire had the good fortune to live at a time when film producers dedicated playwrights, composers (Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, George/Ira Gershwin, etc.) to his dancing & singing talents.
The continuos jumping off platforms and landing in a split had to have taken it's toll on their bodies over the years. In the same a boxer is affected by blows to his head over and over, throughout their career.
@@AnastasiaLUVSU Look up the youtube video Nicholas Brothers live (1990). They were in their 70's. No splits, but bet they were moving better than you do now.
I wonder if Harold really was only supposed to do two splits or he just wasn't able to get his timing right this performance and played it off very well. At the very least, I think that spin at 2:13 was supposed to end in one. Great performance either way.
The Nicholas brothers were the best! It just don't get any better than this!!
AMEN!
The running diving splits are absolutely breath taking wow
I just wondered... "How did their suits hold up to it?!?!?" They had to have been custom made!!!

This was taken from The Ed Sullivan Show Episode #7 in 1953
Good information, thanks for posting!!!
Nothing like this anymore genius dancers

They were fantabulous. Thank you sharing.
Just incredible dancers real showmanship. All those splits that they did I don't think I could be walking right side up. LOL
Absolute legends true innovators ahead of their time

So beautiful.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Amazing dancers, the acrobatics were jaw dropping. 😲
It wasn't long enough
Not even breathing hard after all that...
I love finding these treasures I’ve never seen before, thank you!

The best 2 to ever put on tap shoes PERIOD.
Os irmãos Nicholas foram e SEMPRE serão, OS MELHORES DE TDS OS TEMPOS.
Sullivan called the brothers, "Boys". a practice that's finally long gone!

Yea fr. MJ also had amazing athleticism and stamina, just look at his live tours
@@finderkeeperrrs MJ was MJ, great talent. Miss them all

C est inutile de ce mettre entre ces maitres. Ils ont trouver leur perfection.😍😍😍😍un frère. Ils n ont besoins de personne😍😍😍😆😆

We dont ignore the ignorance of the time. It all needs to be continiusly retold because it is the entire story.
Bet this part of the TV show was blacked out in the South.
yesterdays les twins
They're not twins.
No. Not even close. Les Twins wish!!!
I SAY THIS ALL THE TIME😭😍
They sing joy to my heart every time I see them! Makes me cry it's so joyful & happy! Thank you for finding this!

Sadly, let's add Gregory Hines.
Incredible and mesmerizing performance
now I know why I love to dance!!!!!!!
Ed Sullivan was a Saint. He mentioned Bill Robinson but what he did not mention was that he paid for the man's funeral.
NIcholas Brothers are the best. Like to see a dance-off between them and Sammy Davis/Fred Astaire

Fayard was performing splits into his 50s.
@@RAJOHN-ke7mc OK? I'd be more impressed if they were doing it in their 70s. 50s ain't old.

@@bbofun Whatever you say buddy.
@@AnastasiaLUVSU I'm impressed they were doing their routine at ANY age! And they started as young children, to boot!
Year on this please.
At 2:57 they soar into "Evil Knievel"s of the dance floor
Anyone knows the name of the song?
Could you please tell me at what ages did the Nicholas brothers die?
Harold nicholas died at the age of 79... in 2000 ...fayard Nicholas died at the age of 91. In 2006
