Nothing else matters to our eternal selves more than what Jesus did for us on the cross, so putting joy/hope into other things more than that reality is futile.
I've been a Christian for 2 and a half years now and listened to a lot of sermons, and this is one of the best I have ever heard. The message being communicated here is so beyond needed in today's Christian world and I needed it myself. I feel the same way. I listen to some of his sermons over and over. The Holy Spirit has helped me mightily through John Piper's sermons. I learn so much more from his expository teaching style. I think he is the greatest theologian of our time.
A branch on a tree was given self will, and it decided that it did not want to be a part of the tree anymore, so it cut itself off to seek life elsewhere...not realizing that the moment that it cut itself from the trunk of the tree, it had cut itself off from the source of life...and seeking a life apart and alone, it died.

Does he mean perish as in going to hell? I mean maybe I misunderstood but salvation through grace was supposed to cover it? Not to say it’s a license to sin, but can a human being live a life desiring God every moment all the time, I’m sorry but that’s impossible while we are in the flesh. Yes they are moments I feel like seeking God whole heartily but there are also times where I just can’t and I suck it up and still do my best to bring glory to him, but does that really mean I will perish? Isn’t that elevating that salvation is earned by works?

@Anchored Alliance Compromiser or not, he's not a "this dude," he's a dearly loved son of the living God and fellow believer. If you can't see the Holy Spirit in this man after a sermon like this because of something he did, then you should wonder if you would be able to see the Holy Spirit in David after his terrible sins. I recommend you read 2 Corinthians 5:16-17, and the Epistles of John. But the point is that God looks on and judges the heart and so should we.
In other words, you're condemning Piper for something he did rather than his heart condition, which seems to be renewed toward God. But only God knows and judges the heart, that's why Jesus commanded us not to judge people since we're judged on the basis of our genuine faith in his righteousness, not ours.

Depression is something not to be shameful about it, some of the Prophets were depressed we partake into Jesus suffering for our good I know that Jesus is so close to those like you and I as we struggle with this illness, I wish you would find a good physician and get treatment for depression I promise it helps but our help comes from the Lord he knows how you feel and loves you give him a chance to heal your broken heart 💔😇🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿

What you said in that message is beyond 100% true. These past 4 months have been like crawling on glass but God will take you straight through the center of your problems. Ana if I can make 1 super big suggestion if your struggling with depression, stop sinning. If you have any sin at all in your life focus on that. That was the revelation I had that took my depression away. When I stopped sinning and focusing 100% on God and stopped blaming him for everything, my absolutely untreatable mental illness of 8 years disappeared like magic! I hope this can help. God is so real it’s unbelievable.

@Anchored Alliance Compromiser or not, he's not a "this dude," he's a dearly loved son of the living God and fellow believer. If you can't see the Holy Spirit in this man after a sermon like this because of something he did, then you should wonder if you would be able to see the Holy Spirit in David after his terrible sins. I recommend you read 2 Corinthians 5:16-17, and the Epistles of John. But the point is that God looks on and judges the heart and so should we.
In other words, you're condemning Piper for something he did rather than his heart condition, which seems to be renewed toward God. But only God knows and judges the heart, that's why Jesus commanded us not to judge people since we're judged on the basis of our genuine faith in his righteousness, not ours.
@Anchored Alliance Thank you, but I've learned a lot about God through John Piper's sermons, as well as from other pastors. I don't know why you are judging him and really, I don't care. You can have your own opinion, but as for me, I think God will lead mine based on His truth. Bless you.

Life is a constant battle to fight the forces (advertising, job, family, movies, society, etc.) that try to make things other than GOD seem precious, more valuable, more worthy of our attention. We fight, and we fight-- Whom have I in Heaven besides you? My flesh and my heart my fail, but I have You. We do not turn to empty cisterns, we wait, and trust on GOD to deliver.

@Anchored Alliance I always encourage my students to discern what a person has that is useful and what is less useful. There's an element of theological maturity in being able to pick up helpful stuff from people we may otherwise disagree with.

Depression is something not to be shameful about it, some of the Prophets were depressed we partake into Jesus suffering for our good I know that Jesus is so close to those like you and I as we struggle with this illness, I wish you would find a good physician and get treatment for depression I promise it helps but our help comes from the Lord he knows how you feel and loves you give him a chance to heal your broken heart 💔😇🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Ana Maria Jimenez thank you so much! I’m actually really glad you sent me this, I posted that 4 months ago and I can honestly tell you with all my heart that today I am a totally different person. What you said in that message is beyond 100% true. These past 4 months have been like crawling on glass but God will take you straight through the center of your problems. Ana if I can make 1 super big suggestion if your struggling with depression, stop sinning. If you have any sin at all in your life focus on that. That was the revelation I had that took my depression away. When I stopped sinning and focusing 100% on God and stopped blaming him for everything, my absolutely untreatable mental illness of 8 years disappeared like magic! I hope this can help. God is so real it’s unbelievable.
