    If anyone was wondering why the plural form of goose is geese (and same thing with foot - feet, tooth - teeth...), that's because of a certain linguistic phenomenon which occured in the transition from Old Germanic to Anglo-Saxon (Old English) called the "i-mutation", or the "i-umlaut".
    *The short version:*
    Basically, in Old Germanic, whenever there was an /i/ or a /j/ (keep in mind this is not a J, it represents the sound at the beginning of words like "yogurt") in the word ending, it affected the main vowel of the word root, changing the way it was pronounced. So there was probably a word like *fōt, which in the plural would become *fōt-iz (or smth like that). As you can see, in the ending (-iz) there is an /i/. The presence of that vowel changed the vowel in the root, from /ō/ to /ē/, thus *fōt - *fēt (all the way to the modern foot - feet).
    *The long, linguistic (and boring) version:*
    We are talking about a kind of "vowel harmony" phenomenon, whereby the presence of a certain type of vowel (or approximant) influences another vowel in the word, changing it to a version which is "more similar" to that vowel or approximant (/i/ or /j/).
    Now, since /i/ and /j/ are both "palatal" sounds (meaning they are articulated by pressing the tongue against the hard palate, just behind your teeth), what they did is they caused a "palatalization" of the vowel in the root (meaning they made it become "more palatal" than it was). In the aforementioned example, the /i/ caused a palatalization of the /ō/. And what was the palatal sound corresponding to the /o/ in Old Germanic? You guessed it: the /e/!!
    And there you have it! You probably didn't give a damn about this whole thing, but I just wanted to share this little fact 🙂

      @@mertatakan7591 As far as the IPA goes, sure, /o:/ is the representation of a long vowel. But orthographically long vowels have often been represented with that diacritic (ō). Just to clarify, but yes, you're right, as far as the phonetic alphabet goes it would be /o:/ to represent the letter ō 😊

    These are just exceptions. They are in every language. English is my second language and it is the most easy language, I think.
    My first language is Russian ✌️
    To form the plural, wе correct ending, I think. So, look:
    кошка - кошки (female cat - female cats)
    кот - коты (male cat - male cats)
    котёнок - котята (baby cat - baby cats)
    лес - леса (forest - forests)
    носок - носки (sock - sockes)
    лёд - льды (ice - ices)
    ребёнок - ребята / дитя - дети (child - children)
    We can correct ending, we can correct suffix, we can even change the root of a word. And these are not exceptions! It is one big hard rule. I think it's unreal, but a lot of people continue learn my native language. Respect!

      I was told that these different plurals are left over from Old English. In Old English, most nouns have different plural forms. However, plurals were standardized by adding -s to the end like cat/cats. The plurals for animals like goose/geese are the ones that didn't change.

    • @iantino
      @iantino Год назад +2

      @@cjhenderson690this happened mostly because English had case and gender, witch modified the words plurals. That's also why there are words like: actress and queen (not the only reason though)

    • @maapauu4282
      @maapauu4282 Год назад +2

      So old Rnglish had 3 genders. Animals that belonged to the neuter gender didn't take plurals. This carries on today.
      For the animals that did have plurals, the plural was a suffix and it was either -s, or -iz. People eventually started pronouncing the vowels before the -iz differently, and because they had the vowels to determine plurals, they stopped using -iz and started using the different vowels only. So it went from Goosiz to Geesiz to Geese.

    English is a West Germanic language in the Indo-European language family. It originated in early medieval England and, today, is the most spoken language in the world and the third most spoken native language, after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. English is the most widely learned second language and is either the official language or one of the official languages in 59 sovereign states. There are more people who have learned English as a second language than there are native speakers. As of 2005, it was estimated that there were over two billion speakers of English.

      @@alzhraahussain6375 Well, your comment doesn't make that much sense. I would change it to do something like this: "I love you, Mestre, and your channel. It's very fun and a good source of knowledge. I hope there are no mistakes because I am not good at English." Here are the reasons and explanations: first of all, you have to add a comma or commas to separate somebody's name from the rest of a sentence when you are talking to them. Second, saying the channel collects learning and fun is, uh, weird. In order to collect fun, the fun would have to be laying around somewhere, which is impossible. As for the "learning" part, putting another verb instead of a noun like "knowledge" makes no sense. Since a verb is an action, a verb cannot have something done to it by another verb. Fourthly, you need to add "there" between the "hope" and the "don't". Fifthly, the "don't" should be "doesn't" because English refuses to be simple. Lastly, "well" doesn't work in that context. "Well" is an averb, something that describes how you did an action. If you said that you can't speak English well, then you'd be right, but in the way that you said it, you have to use "good". "Good" is an adjective and is what you'd use since there isn't a verb in that last sentence.
      I hope I explained well enough. Sorry that my explanations got lazy at the end. It is late right now and I'm very tired. There are a lot of online resources that you can use for better help, so if I confused you more or you need more help with it, send your questions to Google or any other search engine.

    Keren kali abang ne ah. Mantab kali konten na, ligat kali pikir klean ..bermanfaat kali la. You had it bombed, crushed on finding a way to get these things digested to what we're facing off..a bit puzzled as it gets 'irregularity' 🙌

    I am from India and my native language is Telugu.
    Still when you know/learnt some English you get to know somethings automatically. I automatically understood plural of Goose is Geese and plural of Ox is Oxen without reading it somewhere or without being told by someone.

    Time to change some English grammar rules - I think plural can be eliminated in most cases, burden can be placed upon the listeners. Same thing with the use of articles like "a" , "the", just think about how the headlines in newspapers were written

    Oxes is correct. Oxen was originally used like it, but nowadays it has been simplified to be oxes so its correct. The same way as eyes. They used to be called eyen.

    Many animal plurals don't change, because they had neuter grammatical gender in old english. Like sheep or fish or deer.

    Plurals like man, men foot, feet, goose, geese are from how the German made plurals, by changing the vowels.
