  • I'm starting October with a Mickey Thompson review & comparison of the Baja Legend EXP. The Baja Legend EXP is comparable to the Nitto Ridge Grappler and the Toyo Open Country RT and the Yokohama Geolander X AT. Mickey Thompson created this tire with the daily driver in mind. It's not an over the top tire, but it does have features that make it usable beyond the pavement. Just don't get too extreme!

I have to say, this tire is really something special. I have a ford bronco black diamond that comes with the general grabber atx, and my friends have these tires on a base bronco. I have a locker and my friends do not and these tires out perform the general grabber imo. Granted I’m a 32” and they have 33” but I plan on getting a set of these. Great review!

I’ve owned these tires for just about a year and approx. have put 25-30 thousand miles on them. Install on a 2015 Ram 1500 Crew Cab 4x4 size 275/65/20 or 34.1 tire. I’ve been very pleased overall. They look very aggressive, no issues in snow, mud, wet or dry roads. Plenty of grip. My only complaint is has they have worn some the noise level has noticeably gone up, they really have a roar to them now then when I first got them. They seem to be wearing well, and I have rotated them three times (about every 10k miles) and constantly check and keep proper / equal air pressure. At lower speeds around 35-40 mph you hear them the most, and when turning. Also and maybe the tire change place did not balance as good as they should have but at highway speeds they definitely have a little I guess the right word is wobble to them. They are not bouncing or anything severe just I guess with as they have worn down some with the larger lugs on the outer edge of the tire I’m definitely feeling some vibration. Full disclaimer it could be something else (not the tire) but I don’t think so as last tire rotation I had an alignment done, running same psi, and I’m running all Bilstien after market shocks 5100 series so an upgraded excellent shock. Maybe it could be the balance or a weight fell off which I’ll have checked but also I truly think as they have worn the noise level has gone up and the ride seems to be a little less smooth as it has been up to lately

Thanks for the extensive review. I have the Nittos on my Ram 2500HD 4x4 with Thuren springs/track bar and Thuren tuned Fox shocks and and am not happy at all with the snow/wet traction or longevity. I live and tow on both dirt and paved roads. Towing will range from 3000 - 10,000 lbs. through all 4 seasons. Leaning towards the K02's, as I have had great luck with them in the past, wondering what you think about this MT vs. the K02's for my application. Tire size will be 295-65R 20.

Purchased these tires to replace the Falken wild peak a/t that came with my Gladiator Mojave. I'm in Florida so far they perform well in wet weather, mud & sand ... much quieter than the falkens ... one of the lightest 35" tires on the market 63lbs .. highly recommend! ...

I have these tires (35x12.50x15) on my YJ Wrangler. I have been very pleased with them, great highway manners, smooth ride, 7lbs lighter than my previous GoodYear MTR’s. Great traction, on hard pack dirt, excellent bite and form on boulders (I dropped them down to 8psi). They have been good on wet roads, just curious to see how they will perform once the snow flies

Matt great video as always. I haven’t heard you mention load rating much if at all , is this something I need to worry about when buying tires ? I have a Trailboss with 95% use on the highway and very little major off road driving so I’m looking for a quite tire but still with the aggressive look. Most tires I look at on line say don’t meet required load rating. My tires are 275/65 18 E. Any thoughts or recommendations ? Thanks

Hey Josh! I may be able to make that happen! I've been surfing comments all morning building a list of tires to review in the future and am writing these down and will see if I can get them in. A lot of people have been asking for some comparisons, so I may do a comparison with them and a similar tire to it's category. Thanks for the suggestions and keep commenting! It helps! Thanks again!

For those commenting on siping….I’ve run these tires for 20k+ on a 7k lb truck….the sipes DO allow more flex than what they seem….mine are the original dick cepek before goodyear squished dick cepek into Mickey Thompson in the cooper merger….I’ve had zero issues in wet conditions with this siping arrangement….I’m in the southeast but have talked with some who have had them in snow and they are pleased with the results….this is an E rated 10 ply tire that uses a 2 ply sidewall that is made of a new material….they are as strong as any 3 ply without the added weight…I’ve aired down to 25 psi on this 7k lb land yacht and have had no punctures or splits whatsoever….no cuts or chips either and I spend 80% or more of my time off road or on some form of forest roads/trails….the center section does hold mud but cleans very easily and quickly….I try to get a different tire each set just to try out different designs but I may end up running these a second time….good tires for the price…mine are 285/75/16

I have 50K on my Cepek EXP iteration of these in 305/55-20 Load Range F on my 19 Silverado 4 x 4. These have been far superior to the Nitto G2s I had before. We spend a lot of time up in the mountain snow and they have proven their worth there especially. They are longer lasting, smoother and grippier in the wet or dry and the snow/mud traction vs the Nitto is clearly superior. At this stage they are noisier than when new, but not anything unlivable. I like that they look more aggressive than they really are with the side lugs and the large open channels. I wouldn't hesitate to replace these with a new set when the time comes, but I'm hoping a newer version will come before then.

I love the specs of these but will not buy them because of the siping. I am almost done with a set of Mickey ATZP3 which have identical siping, and that is comprehensively inadequate. It takes almost nothing in terms of moisture for the grip to break up, and they are prone to hydroplaning and are glassy in snow of any type. But I'm also sick of the stiffness of the 3 ply sidewall which the Boss now has. Any suggestions?

I have a 2008 Crown Victoria PI and I'm moving to Hawaii where the highway roads have potholes everywhere and the roads are windings.
I need tires for this condition:
    Regular roads (non-residential): 45 mph
    Rural freeways: 50 mph
    Urban freeways: 60 mph
    Lots of pot holes
    Very Hot summers
    Rainy spring & fall seasons
    Lots of turns
    Flood areas
Parking on beach (on top of sand - just parking though, not driving around on sand)
Sometimes carrying a lot of weight from big grocery hauls, bikes, surfboards, people, etc.
    I'd appreciate your recommendations/knowledge.
    Thank you

Really wish reviews when you bring in the other brands would confirm weight. For some reason, this hybrid weighs TEN POUNDS LESS than the same size Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT, which you'd think would be the opposite? And the EXP weights FIVE POUNDS LESS than the Nitto?

I just ordered new tires for my 03 F150 , at first I ordered the Baja Boss and I called back next day and changed order to the Legend EXP, in the 285/75R16 the Boss was 7lbs heavier and my fuel mileage is already BAD and I had fear the Boss was gonna get me way too close to single digits MPG!!! The Boss is a fantastic tire from everything I can find and the guy at the shop said he sells quite a few and they truly are as good as what everyone claims! The Boss extra weight comes from being a 10 ply with 3 ply side walls seems to be the story. The tread is crazy deep and looks awesome! But I am hoping I will be happy with the EXP! Supposed to get them installed tomorrow! Researching tires constantly this last month has been exhausting! Sooo many options! One F150 group I questioned reminded me to remember the added destruction that a really heavy tire is gonna do to the wheel bearings! I guess the new “super trucks” on the road today can take the weight of heavy tires better as it’s been along time since I heard any fuss about wheel bearings

Definitely would of liked to see more of it but I do really like everything else on the tire so far. Hopefully it'll come in a 10 ply 120 load index in my size. 275/55r20. I like the rugged trek as well but so far I don't see anything about them making it in a 10 ply. Their customers service is garbage.
Top 2 so far for me has been toyo at3s and mt baja boss at. I just hate how much they weigh compared to other 10 ply tires ive ran and pick up a ridiculous amount of rock. I have 40k miles on them tho with 14/32 left out of 18/32. My 04 denali weighs about 7000 pounds with the added weight and a tow a decent of as well

These tires wander like crazy. The tires tend to ride on the center of the tire, but you can see how the outer treads alternate between wide and thin, this causes them to catch and pull the tires left and right as it runs down the highway. Compared to a BFG K02 or Trail Terrain this is a much more aggressive tire and may be better off road, esp. mud, however they ride awful onroad. Also this is not an original Micky Thompson design; it's a rebranded Dick Cepek design. Not a good modern tire - on road at least.
