Hi am trying to learn game development but my basic problem is in programming please tell me how did you learned to program and the logical thinking. thank you (do i have to go CS university to learn to program?)
@@Omaya256 I learned 95% of what I know by googling and constantly making things over many years. Nowadays the amount of content you can find online is a ton more than what I had when I was a kid so you can definitely do it without university.
Damn, survivor squad is one of the oldest indie game i got on steam, and now, i see a dude talking about how it is his first game one steam. Congrats mate.
yo, i ve been searching for it for so long, now bcuz of ur comment i found it and its only 1.50 the complete edition, im buying it rn, i played it cracked long ago but im so happy i can buy it now :D wanna play together?
Hey CM, I think something people do not appreciate about game development is the sheer amount of different skills you need to acquire. For instance, for my world map I had to learn how to draw isometric shapes... or how to draw in the first place! People only ever see a finished product, they don't see the countless hours if work and frustration that went into it.
Yup that's definitely true! Especially as a solo indie dev it really requires knowing a bit of everything. I'm mainly a programmer but over time I've had to learn to improve my art skills, marketing, trailer editing, etc.
@@user-yc8xb2iz9w That's a bit harsh, it's one thing socializing and another working in close proximity with someone over such a long period; you either need to finance them or share creative decisions (which is harder than it sounds). And at this point if you pick the wrong partner - you could end up losing all your finance or something potentially worse.
Had no idea you’ve spent twenty years doing this, now I know why you have such good knowledge of Unity, I think most people have totally unrealistic expectations of what they can achieve, they think they are going to make the next GTA or Fornite when they are one person, when AAA games cost millions and are made by dozens of professionals
Heh yup, for my third Flash game somehow I had the brilliant idea of trying to make a massive MMO of Cops vs Robbers. Naturally I had no clue how difficult that would be so kept working on it and finally realized it was way too much and dropped the project after about 6 months.

12:40 really hit me hard. I worked for years and sold only 12 copies of my game for a total of like $300. It was completely not worth the thousands of hours I invested into that project. It actually made me consider quitting the game industry. But my love to creating has kept me in it. After that failure I realized that my reach is nothing compared to what the big studios have. It feels like you have something worth saying but no one is listening and that's soul crushing.
I love that the guide to making games it pretty much to just keep doing it. I've made plenty of games for old BASIC minicomputers and for DOS... but since Windows, I only really made one simple game of battleship. The 64k and ~200k memory limits were a great way to force you to actually finish games - the Windows world of ever-updating DirectX versions and everything makes it very easy to keep starting over and over and over... :)

First of all, great respect to your devolopment journey. Your videos are very usefull and you are best teacher i ve ever seen at unity. In video it is not clear but i wish you ve gotten a great finansal results of the “succesfull games” as you totaly deserve. You create youtube content, make lessons and work on your projects and you answer all questions! You are the best! I dont follow unity’s tutorial because you teach better than them 🤣 thank you and hope you get what you want!
"DVD Projekt Red" Thats a good one they made the Mitcher series right? also yesterday i was looking for games like mount and blade and now that i saw your video i know about hyperknights!
your hard work is truly inspiring, sir. I'll keep supporting your work the only way I can right now (liking and watching your content), but I really hope your channel can get more visibility. Just one question: You clearly have a senior experience in game dev, haven't you ever considered joining a studio or is solodev what really drives you?
Not really. There aren't any game dev studios in Portugal so if I wanted that I would probably have to move to another country. And naturally I really like being able to choose what to work on even if that does come with risk. Although I would love to try it out at some point in my life, just to see how it is to work in a big studio.
I really love your games, but I have to agree with the people in the comments saying that the art style is holding you back. I played Game Corp a lot as a child and I really love it, but I`m not sure it's something I'd take a glance at in the Steam store now and play. I think an investment in yourself to learn some amazing pixel art stuff would help a lot. Also, make a solid sequel to Game Corp and I'll give you my money
I played so many of your games over the years yet, I never knew you were the developer. Especially, Ninja Tycoon. I actually discovered your games online before I discovered your channel.
I think this type of video is incredible, I launched my first game recently, it's called "fortuito", I identified with your journey (Google translator )
Nice to see your journey. That being said, quality over quantity. So many indie studios focus on just making game after game the indie market is now ridiculously saturated. Everyone wants to make a game for the sake of making it instead of looking at quality.
Thnak you so much for this, the knowledge and experience is invaluableto those still trying to figure out to join this tough industry. I am eternally grateful.
Very nice and inspiring journey, not a lot of devs share the whole journey with all the ups and downs. I never tried the Knights game but glad to hear inspiration came from Mount and Blade, it is one of my favorite games and I'd like to do something similar but with much more complex trading and building system, so basically turning it into tycoon, M&B Tycoon :D Also I feel like focusing on steam alone for making sales is impossible for indie games. What you need nowadays is get youtubers to play your game, I feel like that generates best interest for the game, and since most of the are bad at games it makes people buy it just to see if it is really that hard and to be better than those bad youtubers so they can tell them in comments how bad they are.
Sure RUclipsrs can really help with marketing but remember they also get flooded with submissions so it's very difficult to get them to play your game. The biggest I got was Markiplier playing Blueprint Tycoon.
You know how JavaScript skipped from ECMA specification 3 to 5? ECMA 4 is the basis for ActionScript, it had typings and what not... if you learn TypeScript now I'm sure you'll have a deja'vu. Back in 1999 when I started with Flash 4, ActionScript wasn't mature enough... Flash 8 is still my favourite and flash mx 6 was the one I've used the longest. We should make a club of flash orphans.

I dont follow unity’s tutorial because you teach better than them 🤣 thank you and hope you get what you want!
Thanks! I'm glad you like the videos!
"DVD Projekt Red" Thats a good one they made the Mitcher series right?
also yesterday i was looking for games like mount and blade and now that i saw your video i know about hyperknights!
Hehe yup I had a ton of fun coming up with Studio names for Game Corp!
was looking for mount and blade videos too and saw this xD
your hard work is truly inspiring, sir.
@@CodeMonkeyUnity You can work remotely in many awesome companies
I really love your games, but I have to agree with the people in the comments saying that the art style is holding you back. I played Game Corp a lot as a child and I really love it, but I`m not sure it's something I'd take a glance at in the Steam store now and play. I think an investment in yourself to learn some amazing pixel art stuff would help a lot. Also, make a solid sequel to Game Corp and I'll give you my money
I played so many of your games over the years yet, I never knew you were the developer. Especially, Ninja Tycoon. I actually discovered your games online before I discovered your channel.
Awesome! I hope you liked the games!
honestly survivor squad gauntlets looks like a great game, or at least my type of game and i am going to get it
It's been a while since I played it myself, definitely would love to play it again, I still really enjoy the concept
wow u motivate me bro :)
I'm glad to hear it! Best of luck in your own journey!
Seriously freeway was you? Man that game was fun. I also remember mochiads. Great channel mate. Thanks for sharing.
That was a long time ago! I'm glad you liked it, thanks!
I think you might have made every game that defined my childhood as flash games
I think this type of video is incredible, I launched my first game recently, it's called "fortuito", I identified with your journey
(Google translator )
Nice to see your journey. That being said, quality over quantity. So many indie studios focus on just making game after game the indie market is now ridiculously saturated. Everyone wants to make a game for the sake of making it instead of looking at quality.
Thnak you so much for this, the knowledge and experience is invaluableto those still trying to figure out to join this tough industry. I am eternally grateful.
Very nice and inspiring journey, not a lot of devs share the whole journey with all the ups and downs. I never tried the Knights game but glad to hear inspiration came from Mount and Blade, it is one of my favorite games and I'd like to do something similar but with much more complex trading and building system, so basically turning it into tycoon, M&B Tycoon :D
Also I feel like focusing on steam alone for making sales is impossible for indie games.
Awesome as always!
