Here’s why the Ford Excursion was the right truck at the wrong time

- In this episode I provide the history of the Ford Excursion, considered the largest mass-produced SUV at the time. It was based on the Ford Super Duty truck lineup that had been redesigned for 1998. The Excursion was immediately panned by critics for being unsafe and wasteful, so much so that after 69,000 sold in its first year of sales for the 2000 model year, sales dropped significantly each year after that, leading to its end in 2005. Today, used examples can sometimes go for over $60,000, as Ford never replaced the Excursion with an equally sized truck.

I recall seeing this at a gas station and thinking it was Dads answer to Moms Minivan.
"dads answer to moms minivan" they should have used that in ads for the car
That’s where most people saw Excursions 😌
In 2008 I remember seeing dads crying at the gas station filling these up.
@@chris55topthis car was phase out in 2005..
@@rafapensonyou think they didn't last at least 3 years?
I still want an Excursion.
I have a 2000 with the V10. It's great for camping trips, taking a bunch of people to concerts, and loading 50 sheets of drywall completely inside. She's a bit thirsty though.
8 mpg city 15 hwy I know.
I bought a 2000 Excursion new, after 24 years and 350,000 miles, I still drive it everyday. I never get tired of it.
The Canyonero Simpsons episode came out in 97. Ford shoulda listened.
That was a classic!!!
Canyoneroooooo! CANYONEROOOOO!!
@@okenwa1983
Can you name the truck with four wheel drive,
smells like a steak and seats thirty-five..
Canyonero! Canyonero!
Well, it goes real slow with the hammer down,
It's the country-fried truck endorsed by a clown!
Canyonero! (Yah!) Canyonero!
[Krusty:] Hey Hey
The Federal Highway commission has ruled the
Canyonero unsafe for highway or city driving.
Canyonero!
12 yards long, 2 lanes wide,
65 tons of American Pride!

Sure.. 🤔
They did. 😂 The Excursion WAS the Canyonero.

Fun Fact: these were the exact same length and width as a regular cab long box F-250. They could have made one with 4 rows based on the crew cab long box.
If Ford reintroduced the Excursion today, they wouldn’t be able to keep them on the lot.
Just the fact that so many of these are still on the road all these years after the last Excursion rolled off the factory floor shows how much people love them and how much demand is there.
It would be trash compared to the original. AND about 100k for the “base” model….
Rarely see an excursion here, I see Suburbans and Tahoes, Yukons
They'd probably make it an EV, to "compete" with the revived Hummer. D:
Another nickname I remember for it was the Suburban Assault Vehicle.
I remember being in this youth group/summer camp type thing as a preteen and our group leader borrowed a top of the line 2000 Ford Excursion from a friend for the week. Our 7-8 person group went everywhere in that thing and I couldn't believe just how massive it was. Must've been the biggest vehicle I'd ever seen at that point in time.
I was very interested in the Excursion with the 7.3L diesel when we had four kids, a dog, and all their gear to haul around. The only reason I didn't pull the trigger was because I was concerned about being able to park it some places. It was big, beautiful, and the interior was light years nicer than a Suburban.
I've driven 4 fords over the years, only owned 1- the 92 bronco (2002 250, 2007 150, 350) and they drove like boxes, and were slugs, and the 2000 Suburban had a very nice interior.
I started working for a Ford dealership in 2008. We had an Eddie Bauer edition come onto our used lot. Even listed at retail new pricing as a used car the phone was ringing off the hook for it.
7:55 And a revolutionary spark plug ejection system.
Built Ford tough
thats the 05 and up 3v engines. The 2v v8 and v10 were damn near indestructible
@@Mach_Style the two valves blew out spark plugs as well.... The three valves have bad Cam phasers
The 3V went the opposite way with the 2 piece spark plugs that could be impossible to remove without them breaking.
@@samholdsworth420 The 2 valves blew plugs as often as any AL headed engine of the era...
We used to call these things the Ford Explosion - a dual knock on the size increase vs. the Expedition and the engine failures.
Just like the Ford Exploder- pos engines
I got it for the towing cuz I might get a trailer..someday...
-Every full size suv driver
the excursion was caricatured in the episode "canoniero" in the simpsons's serie !
Sure!
I’ve been fortunate enough to have taken road trips in Mercedes S classes (to include a W220 S600), a Cadillac Deville, Lexus LS430, a couple of Lincoln Navigators, and several Grand Marquis. By far and away, the Excursion I took a road trip in was the most comfortable and least fatiguing of them all. Amazing vehicles in their own right.
I remember seeing one as kid, and it dwarfed everything else on the street.
Now every basic SUV is the size of one
It's the same size as a Suburban
these things were gargantuan. basically ford's suburban. The FDNY used these for a long time. In fact they retired the last one about five years ago and went with GM 2500 pickup trucks.
That v10 was also a gem, understressed and sounded sick when straight piped!
I never had one but I've always wanted one with a V10.
This is such an excessive vehicle that one would have a hard time driving on a daily basis. I’d like 2 please
90s Soccer Mom: I like to sit up high!
It was cool when gas was less than a dollar a gallon. What a time to be alive!
Yes. The Saudi payback for Desert Storm.
Price before the energy crisis in mid 2000s. :(
I wish they still made these. I still want one to this day. Can you do a episode on the Ford Explorer sport track?
Get the Expedition MAX, it's the modern-day equivalent of the Excursion.
When I was little i carpooled to and from school with a kid who's mom drove one of these. It was so spacious and the plush leather seats were so comfortable. I was in love the moment I sat in it 😂
We have 2001 Ford Excursion LTD V10, we are the original owners, pulls a fully loaded 6 horse trailer like it was empty, 350.000 miles still going strong, there are a few tricks to improve gas milage, 17 in town 22 highway. We'll never sell it. 😅
You must live in a really flat part of the United States to get that kind of mileage
I have a 99 c 2500 Suburban with a 454 and I get 12
17/22 MPG with the V10 is a hard pill to swallow. I've heard owners talk about single digits around town, 12ish on the highway and 6-7 pulling trailer.
Better than Today's Suburban. New vehicles are over priced rolling trash cans.
I like the nicknames they gave Excursion in the newspaper article.
Part of it was that, compared to the Suburban, the Excursion seemed less refined for the money. The engines were horrid gas-guzzlers with the V8 and especially the V10 lucky to hit 10 mpg. They were unwieldy in most handling tests. And soon after this came out, the Middle East war(s) started, oil prices were all over the place and being a massive guzzler wasn't the best image, and there were far more smaller cars on the road then and the Excursion looked like it would crush them.
Today, the huge SUVs/CUVs get far better mileage, are safer, and with tech, can actually handle. I'm surprised Ford hasn't tried this again and toss the Expedition stretch version behind.
We have an 01 V10, there are tricks to get the fuel milage up, we get 17 in Town 22 on highway, and who in God's name would have a 5.4 in a vehicle that weighs 8,000 lbs
@@southerncross3638 That's some great fuel economy. Thought ours doing 14/15 was fine, how'd you get to 17/22?
The excursion was a 3/4 ton vehicle. It was designed as a much more durable vehicle.
There is definitely a place in the limo market for it if you made a Lincoln version. The big SUVs have pretty much replaced the Town Car.
The reason Excursion was phase out was the mid 2000s energy crisis.
I remember people like Rush Limbaugh getting all excited and hard on the radio waves with this it was rather disgusting.
He also oddly had an opposite affection towards the Yugo
This is a good used option for families that want to pull a medium size camper and bring a bunch of kids and a dog with them.
You should consider doing a video on strange cars offered from automakers in the 1980s and 1990s. Like the Ford Durango, Ford SkyRanger, ASC McLaren Mustang, and the Dodge Dakota Convertible. I think that would be a great video.
As a kid I wanted a big dually truck and a big SUV for road trips. Suburban never offered a duramax version. So I just wanted a diesel Excursion. If I could afford a DuraBurb I'd buy one!
This channel is so rad.
I use to love those, but never wanted to own one, but I would imagine it would be a beast on a nice long road trip though.
We had one with a v10 best truck ever, hauled the whole family and was great for trips, one of many many cars I wish I still had!
I love big SUV's, they just feel so good to drive in the Winter!
As long as you live in a state that actually gets winter weather 😂🌨❄️
Got one yesterday, doing research post-purchase. Smart
i grownup with this vehicle and i head the best memory grow up
The horsepower is kind of irrelevant for these large SUVs it's about the torque 😊
7.3 Diesel startup is just music
The Excursion isn’t dead it’s just reincarnated as the Expedition Max.
Expedition as an excursion is Dick Grayson as the Dark Knight
Those new wagoneers really are huge if you have stood next to one.
I’ve looked at a lot of online newspaper archives from the late 90’s to mid 00’s that dunk on the excursion for its size, weight and gas mileage.
I recall the naming being more based on the fact that the explorer was for short exploration trips the expedition for mild expeditions. And the excursion for long excursions. Or that’s what the sales men used to say
Good video. I was going to mentioned the Expedition extended length and the Lincoln Navigator extended length, but you did. Good video. Nice explanations as well.
I remember those.
Great vehicle. One other problem was how much value it lost driving it off the lot.
You need to do a video about the Mv1
I was surprised Ford let Chevy have a big tow vehicle so long without competing. Every time I saw a Suburban it was towing some big camper trailers. Thank Pat, another great video.
i ordered an SD in 2000, i got $600 worth (which was a lot) of options for getting a manual trans. They were incentivizing so the autos could go in the excursions. The irony is I would have paid them extra for the maual.
Chevy should have taken some notes from the Excursion amd made a diesel version. Even today a 6.6 Duramax would be amazing.
There are companies that keep the Excursion’s alive such as MegaRexx and Custom Autos By Tim
I never understood why they changed the name, Canyonero was so much better. 12 yards long, 2 lanes wide, 65 tons of american pride!
I was waiting after the Ford Explorer, then the Ford Excursion, for them to come out with the Ford Extinction. Never happened.
I always like these. Would probably make a decent overland vehicle. 😊
Loved this truck
Fun Fact : There was a planned 6 doors (3 doors per side, 4 row SUV) Excursion. It would have been very popular as a limo.
How’d I miss this
Have you done the Dodge Shadow/Plymouth Sundance yet? I had a V6 Shadow stick shift. It was a lot of fun to drive
ruclips.net/video/U82_rq4Jv2c/видео.html
I ordered a new diesel 4x4 one for 2000. It handled badly until adjustable rancho shocks, then it was the best car ever. Great mpg. I miss it.
I’d love to see a video on the E38 BMW 7 series!
I've always wanted one with the V10.
0:00...............AWESOME CALL!!!!!
The ford c150 and c350 from centurion was and still is the bigest suv and the only suv to be on a 1ton then and now
Marty Mcfly does review on Excursion.
Great Scot!!
Maybe this is a little new, but could you do an episode on the Buick Lucerne? I am considering potentially buying one.
CABT stills builds them to customers specs & their own they do 6 door stretch specs
😂😂 is there really a company named after cock and ball torture?
40 gallon tank!
I’d like a new one now
I wish that intolerance for excessive size was a mentality that was still around today, it's just silly how big some cars and especially SUV's have become in the last 10 years
I’d love to have one.
Front faschia was also updated in 2002.
We had an one with four children. It was perfect
Can you do a video on the Nissan sx cars?
Have you done a thunderbird turbo coupe ?
Nice.
If Lincoln would have had a version of this, they could've called it the Lincoln Town House!
D o the ACURA INTEGRA
PLEASE!!!
Still waiting for the CRX episode 😊
Did Ford came up with something similar to the Excursion, like a four door SUV Bronco in the late 80s early 90s? I saw few examples on the streets but it wasn't a Excursion name. They even had it in the late 70s early 80s versions as well.
Once, I saw a black Excursion that had been stretched to have *six* doors. It didn't look like a limousine or professional car either -- just a factory-built four-row Excursion that the factory never built. (It also took up two parking spots.) I'd like to meet the guy who looked at an Excursion and thought, "I dunno ... I like it, but do you have anything, you know, bigger?"
❤❤❤ I love a Ford Excursion have more room for everyone like first class. Have a best in class passenger of cargo have power for towing. Have a big fuel tank go long range. ❤❤❤ I love this suv from day one.
Honestly it would probably do amazingly well today
the right truck in the wrong time can make all the difference in the world
CANYONAROOOOOOO!
This is wasteful? An enclosed body seems way more practical than a pickup bed thats empty 90% of the year. Body on frame is way more durable and based on the comments people still love these. The 7.3 diesel seems to make a bit more sense than a V10 tho :)
God I’ve always wanted a V10 Excursion. Soooo bad.
2003 200000 miles, still puts throw away minivans in the graveyard. Godzilla swap and start the clock over! Let's go!!
There's definitely is a market for the Excursion in 2024. The limo Market would definitely like a Lincoln sized version.
I’ll take that over the sub
Has it been a while? It seems like it to me. Let's check it out.
I’d love to have a new Eddie Bauer Excursion with any engine.
Doug DeMuro had a longer video on the Ford Excursion
I had a coworker who thought a bit more of himself than he should have. He had an Expedition but I would call it an Excursion. He liked that, but he didn't know I was kinda making fun of him by playing into his ego.
I’ve had two excursions in the family. Just felt like trucks. That’s it. Nothing special, literally an F250 with a connected bed & cover with third row seating.
Canyonero!
It’s a stretch to say 6 models years is “far too early to have a chance”.
And to think, there are bigger SUV's available today.
Sure, the hype of those vehicles is so high as f*ck today than the time when Excursion release..
Created for the sole purpose of making, platform-wise, the biggest SUV ever.
There might be some modern SUVs that are dimensionally bigger, but none of them are built on HD Truck platforms like the Excursion.
1989 Nissan Sentra next pleeeeaseeeeee
