He needs to count all the calories if he wants to get the results quicker and be strict with diet and training which I doubt he doest that right now. He has a whole year which should be easy to get to his goal anyway.
Training has very little effect on weight loss. Average 60-90min gym workouts burn 200-350kcal at best, and most people easily overeat enough to cover that difference. Training more often or harder only generates marginal returns, and the effort will often leave you feeling more hungry than normal. Managing your diet is key.
They need to host a pod together at least once a week. I need more of this in my life
