I want to study medicine because growing up my mum was diagnosed with a rheumatoid issue. Me, seeing all the pain she went through and the little research done in rheumatology, felt absolutely sick. This is mainly what is inspiring me to do medicine.

I’m applying to medicine this year and this video really helped me start to put in to words, why I want to do medicine.
My mother suffered from a transient isceamic attack and although this wasn’t the most serious illness see how much she was frightened by the fact half her face was paralysed made me feel well sick, and helpless but as one of the med students said, being there for her when she need me most like going on walks and helping out in the house and seeing how she appreciated for the ‘little I could give’ really stuck with me when researching about medicine.

All of them are so passionate and motivated, where as I honestly have no reason what so ever to study medicine and I was hesitant towards a career in Art and that's why I randomly chose medicine. Due to no actual interest, shh.. don't tell my university, I am finding it difficult to answer the question "why medicine?". Btw I am also joining a university in Preston, UK ...and it's... University of Central Lancashire

      Hey there :)
I read your comment, raised my eyebrows and scrolled down to read more, but then I knew I needed to say something and I'm surprised out of the 7 people who have liked your comment, and all the others that scrolled past it, no one said anything.
I really don't know if you'll listen to me but my hope is that you will and at least I have done my role in advising you.
Please do not take the route of medicine if you don't know whether to take it or not.
Its a very long and difficult process, and a lifelong commitment.
      LIFELONG COMMITMENT.
It's like saying, I don't know if I should marry this person or not, but I'll do it anyways.
Why is it that you thought of medicine?
What's the reason it popped in your head?
And why did you discard thinking further about arts?
Why are you not being openly genuine towards your family with this matter?
Is anyone pressuring you to go for medicine and discouraging you from arts or any other field?
Did you have any work experience in either of these fields?
What made you consider arts and medicine?
If you don't have real answers for the questions above, then you need to do more exploring, a lot of internal thinking and have lots of deep meaningful conversations with people about these matters.
Please do not go for medicine just for the sake of picking a field.
You may very well start and a few months, maybe years, into the course, you'll be seriously thinking of backing out.
Not because its hard, but because it's not something you really want, and on top of that it IS actually hard.
If you're lucky enough at this point, you might drop out and start going after what you actually want.
But, you would have used a lot of precious time, effort and money towards studying medicine, and you might decide to go through with it.
At that point, when you're graduated, you will not have a satisfying career and this will really affect your life and mental health.
Even if you do end up falling in love with it, who can guarantee you that?
I am not writing this comment to pull you down and make you feel like you're not enough or can't do this.
I'm writing this because I'm concerned that you might not be putting sufficient thought into making this life decision and that could very much negatively impact your life.
Please so something about this, talk with someone more experienced or someone who can guide you, do more work experience, watch more videos, and do some self-reflecting, do some personal writing, have meaningful conversations, talk with professionals or professors, learn more about these fields by reading books or reading articles.
Please do not take this lightly.
Good luck to you, dear stranger on the internet.
      My best wishes from me.
And please take my advice, even if it's a bit late, because being a bit late is always better and easier to reverse than being more late.

my answer to why medicine is that I want to be a scientist, and medicine has the most interesting research out there (IMO), it's also one of the only professions in my country I could be a researcher in and make a good amount.
I besides me liking the content, of course, I would also like to help people, but that wasn't really the reason that made me pick medicine, after all, almost every legit job helps people in some important way, the world would break down if ever one where doctors, so I never felt like I needed to be one to help people, I always felt I could still do my best, help people, and make the world a better place (at least by a little) even if I was an animator or an archeologist.
With all that said, helping people still ended up being one of the main reasons why I chose medicine and not any other option I contemplated before lol😅, I mean I still stand by what I said that people can help each other and make the world a better place in any carer, but I have a personal reason why I felt the way medicine helps other people feels different.
I was doing a course while in high school that teaches the basics of first aid, I really enjoyed learning those practical skills and the rationale behind it, but that's not why I chose medicine, in general, I am an easy person to please with new or interesting knowledge, so finding a subject interesting wasn't enough to make me go for such a huge commitment like medicine, however, a few months after that course, my mom choked on a piece of bread during breakfast, my dad tried doing Heimilich he had seen in passing from tv but it wasn't really working since it was not being performed correctly, luckily that was one of the things I had learned from my short course on first aid, so I performed the maneuver correctly, and (maybe) saved (or at least helped) my mom who was basically turning blue from lack of oxygen.
I don't know if it's selfish to say that but I felt happy, I was happy to have helped Mom, I felt smart (which is a bit unusual for me) for remembering the procedure correctly, and I felt proud to make some good I could tangibly see, and which people (in this case dad and mom) where grateful for.
Tl;dr: most professions help people, but helping people in medicine feels more fulfilling because of the personal interaction, also the content is super interesting and the money is not bad (which makes it easier to set aside time for research :D ).
