Lastly, in about 2005, I tested a 1983 Ibanez TS9. No matter the amount or the brand, it was the very, very, by far the best sounding OD I’d ever heard. Sounded like EMI 1964-1967 in a box. The 40th anniversary Tamura OD808 is the closest if not dead on to that sound I’ve ever heard. I’m not even looking at drive pedals to buy anymore. Disclaimer though, I love any great Tube Screamer. The Tamura is the best you can get, IMO.
Wow, I think all these 808 models have their own distinct personalty in a 808 OD soundscape, love to own all of them actually...but I was really impressed by the Catalinbread and Earthquaker modded 808's, but the Catalinbread 808 mod just blew me away with what seemed like a larger boost in bottom end, mid range cut, and seemly fatter headroom. Would like to hear all these new 808 models thru some Strat and Tele single coils...great demo of all the different Maxon 808 models, thank you !
Thanks for the comments; you're totally correct and they all really do have their own unique voice, much like the engineers and companies behind the mods. :-) If you want, check out some of the individual pedal demos where Ray uses a Tele as well as uses the 808s to push a high gain amp. Definitely more demos on the way! Thanks for listening.
I wouldn't modify the perfect boost/drive. I did buy a Maxon ST9Pro+ which is pimped out to be ideal already and to not sully my regular OD-9 which is just ideal as is the same as any of my trusty OD808s. Interesting and fully understand why modifications would be ideal for certain styles and applications beyond what I love the little green boxes for (Hitting my already dirty sound to boost it further whilst tightening things up, really clears up the upper mids and in general brings a good sound to life with touch sensitivity and naturally compresses the dynamics). Cheers and all the best your way gents
I’m with you on most points. I just recently bought a Maxon OD9 and it’s so good, they became my favorite OD manufacturer. I want to try the VOP9, very much so.
@@starshineraiser6729 Good to hear John I hope you get the chance to try out the VOP9. I have tried and owned many drive pedals looking for the variety that isn't really about the gain on tap but at the same time is not a clean boost either for what I mostly utilize my drive pedals for and the Maxon numbers shot out against plenty of others price not factor, They have always been what I have selected blindly. Now I am a modern, high-gain guy mostly which might well be very different from what your main needs and wants, The OD808, OD9 and ST9Pro+ all sound great going into a fairly cleanish Fender, Dr Z and Two Rock...etc. amps for much sweeter boosted and driven sounds, The 9 variety I find keeps things a little bit thicker than the 808 which whilst very similar does slightly thin the lower mid-range and add slightly more upper mids which depending on the amp and desired results is very useful. I know how subjective things can be of course taste-wise and what suits one player might be the antithesis of another player's. These days we are very spoilt for choice options wise, It must be a great time for kid's starting out as it is possible to get a very respectable setup gear-wise for not that much money, That wasn't the case when my friend's and myself started, Especially having almost zero budget to work with hehe. Cheers and all the very best your way man. Dean
I like the Catalinbread version. I have the Dirty Little Secret! I purchased a Maxon OD-808 for my Mesa Nomad 100 amp. It is a perfect companion. I place the Maxon OD-808 between ch. 2 And ch. 3 of the Mesa Nomad footswitch.
I received my Keeley modded od808 yesterday. I have number 226 of 400. I bought it for the EVH 5150 III 50w EL34 head I ordered. I'm still waiting for the amp.
Went with the EQD because of the openness. Seems most people prefer the Catalinbread, but it all depends on your amp and playing style. Since I'm using a 1w Supro, the EQD just made more sense
I'm sure it will vary depending on style of play... in this video the Catalinbread is the winner for me...then Pigtronix.. then a tie between the Keeley and the Earthquaker Devices... I have zero doubts I could find great tone in all of them.
Short answer: Yes. Long answer: Kinda. Maxon were the original company that made and designed pedals that were resold under the Ibanez Brand. The original Ibanez TS808 circuit is the same as the original Maxon OD808 circuit; just branded as Ibanez when shipped outside Japan. Maxon and Ibanez split in the early 2000s and started selling under the Maxon brand. These Maxon OD808s all have a special mod celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the pedal so they're all a bit unique and different. Keeley is my favorite. :-D ! Check out Fivewattworld for an in depth history of the Tubescreamer.
Do you think the Catalinbread can also drive a high gain amp? I know you said its keeley. But the sound from Catalinbread is also amazing. I might need it for my other band who play some alternative stuff. But my main purpose why I'm buying this is for my metal band.
Yes, definitely. We actually JUST posted a new video featuring only the OD808-40C, we use it to push a high gain amp at the end. Check it out and let us know what you think!
The Keeley mod isn’t sounding too fresh. Catalinbread sounds good but I wonder if the saturation will just mush the overdrive of an amp. I never noticed the honkiness of the Maxon 808 till now either.
We really liked it with a high gain amp. Check out our latest video where we put the Catalinbread mod through it's paces. We put it in front of a high gain Blackstar towards the end of the video. Please comment and let us know what you think!
So I bought the Tamura and preordered the Catalinbread, wish I had them all. The Tamura is the best OD I’ve ever used, period. I love the TS mid hump and always pass when a descriptor states “more bass and no dreaded mid hump”. Why play TS type pedals if you dislike midrange?
Awesome! Glad you at least got two... and two REALLY good ones at that. We'll forward your comments to Mr. Tamura. It's always nice to hear when people are enjoying what we do! Play on!!
I'm pretty sure Ray was running his RG into the Fuchs Four Aces; for most of the videos he runs a pretty consistent clean sound. You may want to check out some of the other videos for a reference. :-)
That Catalinbread sounds amazing. I love the Pigtronix, as well.
Catalinbread for the win!

love that catalinbread sound
Is there a brutal metal version of this video that is less effing blues based? FML. Thanks! :)
Crusty Blooze Dads unfortunately dominate the Tubescreamer market...

I love EQD and I have a couple of their pedals, but the winner here is the Catalinbread version.

Who uses an 808 circuit like this??? Everything at noon???

Is this a tube screamer? I just found out about this pedal - I like the last one -Thanks in advance !!

Great video! Are all of these pedals (such as the Pigtronix) true bypass?
Which do you guys think is best for high gain and drop tuned?
Thanks you!

clean sound ???

Exactly! Why play a TS into a clean amp?
Man the Keeley mod sounds like shit compared to the rest!
Definitely not a clean sound.
